School’s Back and Soon the Flu Will be Too!! Get A Flu Shot Now! Get Vaccinated. Vaccination is the best protection against contracting the flu. Everyone 6 months of age and older should get vaccinated against the flu as soon as the 2012-2013 season vaccine is available in your area.

If you do contract the flu, talk to your doctor about antivirals. Antiviral drugs are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaler) that can be used for prevention or treatment of flu viruses. If you get sick, antiviral drugs can make your illness milder and make you feel better faster.

Flu Facts: • The flu is caused by a virus called influenza • Flu is a contagious illness that is spread in droplets made by people when they talk, sneeze or cough. These droplets can then infect another person when they inhale them.

• Less commonly, a person might also get flu by touching an object that has the flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or nose.

• Once infected, you may pass the virus to others even about a day before you begin to have symptoms yourself.

• Flu can cause a mild to severe illness and even death especially in the very young or old, pregnant woman or people with other medical illnesses (i.e.: asthma, diabetes) • The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year.

Q: What else can I do to prevent getting or spreading the flu?

A: Here are some things you can do: • Get vaccinated! Ask your friends to get vaccinated.

• Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the garbage.

• Stay away from people who are sick.

• Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

• If someone in the house is sick, if possible, try to keep them in a separate area.

• Keep surfaces like tables, sinks, counters and toys clean by wiping them down with a household disinfectant (follow instructions on the label).

Q: If I am concerned that vaccines cause autism, what is the harm of with holding vaccines?

A: Autism is also common in countries where there are no vaccines. Your child may develop severe illness which is easily vaccine - preventable.

Q: Who should get the flu vaccine?

A: Beginning this year with the 2012-2013 influenza season, the CDC recommends that everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine each year. The single best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu vaccine each year.

Q: What types of vaccinations are available?

A: The two types of flu vaccines are: • The “flu shot”: an inactivated vaccine which contains killed virus that is given by injection. It is approved for use in people 6 months of age and older, including healthy people, people with chronic medical conditions and pregnant women.

• The nasal spray flu vaccine: a vaccine made with live, but weakened flu virus that cannot cause the flu in a healthy person. This is approved for use in healthy people 2-49 years old (not pregnant) Q: What are the Side Effects of the two vaccine types?

A: Different side effects can be associated with the flu shot and nasal vaccine.

The flu shot: You cannot get the flu from a flu shot.

Some minor side effects that could occur are: Soreness, redness, or swelling at the site of injection, Low grade fever, Muscles aches .If they are going to occur at all, they begin soon after the vaccination and usually last 1 to 2 days. Almost all people who receive influenza vaccine have no problems from it.

The nasal spray: The nasal-spray vaccine has weakened viruses and does not cause severe symptoms often associated with influenza illness. (In clinical studies, transmission of vaccine viruses to close contacts has occurred only rarely.) Side effects can include runny nose, wheezing, headache, Low grade fever, muscle aches, vomiting.

Brian was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in April 2011. Despite his illness, Brian spurred the family into action as soon as he found out about the Foundation’s Long Island walk. Determined to participate, Brian, with the help of his brother Robert, led the way in creating “Team Brian,” an activity which encouraged him in his battle against the disease. Sadly, Brian passed away on Christmas Day that same year. This year, in the same spirit of determination, both men look forward to returning for the walk with family and friends.

Father and son strongly believe that the walk is a moving and inspirational way to continue to fight in Brian’s memory. And, for both, it is also fulfilling to know that 100 percent of all money they raise will go directly to pancreatic cancer research.

Robert are two of the many dedicated and determined individuals participating in the walk who have joined with The Lustgarten Foundation and Cablevision in the fight against pancreatic cancer,” said Kerri Kaplan, executive director of The Lustgarten Foundation.

Most of us have probably experienced some sort of adversity in our lives, whether of the small, petty variety or the large, lifechanging type. Overall, though, it is how we choose to deal with it that ultimately defines us. If, by taking the high road, we can somehow learn from it while not losing our sense of self in the process, well then, that’s really all we can hope to accomplish.

Someone recently pointed out to me that it’s often the star players who are frequently booed while on the road. Why? Because, despite the perceived animosity, there

exists a degree of grudging respect, perhaps even jealousy that the player isn’t part of their own home team.

Well, if that’s the case, then I have to believe criticism is the sincerest form of flattery. Otherwise, why would someone take the time and effort to express such negativity, if not for the sheer fact that they are anything but indifferent?

Rather, they must be quite invested.

Believe me, I will never truly understand those who seem to make their living by spewing hurtful opinions toward others.

Perhaps it makes them feel better about themselves; perhaps they are not

equipped to put their words into something more constructive. Either way, I believe it is a combination of arrogance and ignorance which motivates such behavior.

But so be it. Those who live their lives to bring others down will continue to do so. Those who strive to make a difference in the lives of others will continue their quest to do so. In the end, all that matters is that a difference was made.

If that means wearing that road uniform with pride in the face of adversity, then so be it. Being on the team sure beats being on the outside looking in, doesn’t it?

Before I turn this column over to Dori Scofield, the Brookhaven Animal Shelter Superviser, I’m going to request that our Readers respond as quickly and as generously as they can. It’s going to take all of us to pitch in and help to heal these poor innocent souls. The 23 were used by their human owners in horrific and inhumane ways.

Some were used as living “bait” to train the fighting dogs, their teeth filed down or their mouths strapped shut, unmercifly bitten and mauled. Their faces and bodies bare the visable scars; their hearts the invisible aching with longing for the love and homes they would never know. Others were used as breeders, living in small filthy cages - no human contact, no grassy fields to run in, no sweet fresh air or warm human touch. They bore litters of puppies sold to continue the cycle of cruelty. And then there are the fighting dogs, beaten and forced to act against their own sweet natures, prodded into tearing and killing. They were killed and discarded as garbage if they refused to fight.

Readers, our combined communities of Nassau and Suffolk Counties need to pull together and make sure each and every one of these dogs has a “happily ever after.” There was evil living amoung us and it will take the good in all of us to make things right.

Please read on for a glimpse of what Dori saw on the raid that saved 23 lives...

“On September 9th, the Brookhaven Animal Shelter, along with the Suffolk County SPCA and Suffolk County Police Department,

confiscated 23 Pit Bulls from a deplorable home in Shirley, NY. Many of the dogs were stacked in rusted cages in a dark, very hot garage.

All were living in their own feces and urine. Others were locked up in various rooms of the house with little or no ventilation, and the remainder lived outside in makeshift kennels. The stench could only be tolerated by a seasoned rescuer. There are few words to describe the expression in the eyes that stared back at us, unsure if we were friend or foe. After five hours of examining and removing the dogs, they were all brought back to The Brookhaven Animal Shelter to begin a new chapter in their lives. I’m sure many readers will cheer for their safety but please understand, they are but another 23 dogs added to the already overcrowded shelter.

These dogs need homes desperately. Some are young, some are old, some are more beat up and scarred than others. But one thing is true... all are yearning for the love, companionship and a warm, cozy environment only a loving home can provide. Yes, we need money toward their medical care, blankets to keep them feeling secure, food to nourish their bodies, but more than anything, homes to nourish their souls. Most of the dogs are petite and all are sweet and submissive. I am asking everyone on Long Island to do something, one thing - small or large - for these dogs. Whether you can donate $1 toward the Help the Animals Fund or adopt one of these orphans, please do something. We are the voice of the voiceless... be a voice, change a life forever.”

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Pinto announced that the Town will host its 5th Annual Walk for Autism to benefit the Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism & Developmental Disabilities. The event will be held rain or shine on Sunday, September 23rd, at John J. Burns Town Park, Merrick Road in Massapequa. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and the walk will begin at 11 a.m., followed by a tailgate party.

“Autism is a complex neurobiological disorder that typically lasts throughout a person’s lifetime. Today, one in 88 individuals is diagnosed with autism. Only a few short years ago, the rate of diagnosis was one in 150, and this staggering statistic makes it the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the United States,” Councilman Pinto said.

“There is no known cause or cure for autism. Many treatments and therapies have surfaced since the disorder has grown more visible in the mainstream press, but reputable doctors have yet to agree on any that will reverse the diagnosis. The answer lies in additional research.”

Now in its fifth year, The Town’s walk has help to spread the word about autism and help those inflicted with the condition. The event benefits the Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism, located in Bethpage, a dedicated satellite facility to North Shore LIJ-Hospital devoted to helping families obtain comprehensive assessments, family support and information on the latest research.

Registration is $10 for individual walkers or $25 for a family (three or more walkers). Each registered

walker will receive a Tshirt and admission to the tailgate party.

Winthrop-University Hospital will participate in the ADA’s Step Out Walk To Stop Diabetes on Sunday, September 30th, at 10 a.m. at Jones Beach State Park. This noncompetitive, family and team-friendly event is aimed at bringing together members of the community to raise funds for diabetes research, education and advocacy.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes – a group of diseases marked by high levels of blood glucose resulting from defects in insulin production, insulin action, or both.

What’s more, an estimated 79 million U.S. adults have prediabetes, a condition that occurs when blood glucose levels are higher than normal (100 to 125 mg/dl after fasting for at least eight hours) but are not high enough to be classified as having type 2 diabetes. A person who is not treated for prediabetes may soon develop type 2 diabetes and is also at increased risk for heart disease and stroke. Stop Diabetes is the movement

HONORING PATRIOT DAY - All students and staff at Eastplain Elementary School in the Plainedge School District were asked to show their support for Patriot Day by wearing red, white and blue. The outing is in memory of Senator Johnson’s dear friend, Fred Breithut, Founder and Chairman, SBPLI, who passed away on April 26th, 2010. In 1984, the year before he retired, Mr. Breithut founded School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, a non-profit organization focusing on closing the gap between the skills needed in Long Island’s business community and the schools that prepare the island’s workforce. Under Mr. Breithut’s leadership, more than 100 such partnerships were formed.

In 1999, Mr. Breithut brought the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition (FRC) to Long Island, in which high school students work with their professional mentors to design a robot that solves a problem using a “kit of parts” and a standard set of rules. Sara Jansen received a full scholarship to the New York Theatre Ballet, and is now under contract with the company. Sara also danced with the American Ballet Theatre at Lincoln Center in Romeo & Juliet, and in July 2004 was invited to dance with the Richmond Ballet in Virginia.

Mary Douglas, owner of South Shore School of Dance, is celebrating her 30th anniversary of teaching.

A mother of 22-year-old twins, she wanted to create a unique school where pre-schoolers received the love, nurturing and encouragement that they needed, while older students benefited from her professional background and the “world class” training that she is able to offer. The result is a very unique school, where “only mothers” teach the very youngest children.

A certified, registered teacher with the Royal Academy of Dance in London, Mrs. Douglas is included in a worldwide registry of outstanding teachers. In 1994, she was invited to Russia as part of an American dance delegation of the Royal Academy to visit the famous Vaganova Institute, training ground to such famous dancers as Mikhail Baryshnikov.

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian has received a $12,500 grant from The New York Community Bank Foundation in Roslyn, NY and a $1,500 grant from The WE CARE Fund of the Nassau County Bar Association in Mineola, NY. The donations will go towards funding for Pal-OMine’s Job Security Through Equine Partnerships (J-STEP) Program.

The core objective of the J-STEP Program is to provide employment opportunities to adults with disabilities. Through the J-STEP Program and equine therapy, each participant is able to gain increased self-confidence and improved job skills to help them obtain employment in his or her community.

In 2010, The New York Community Bank Foundation was one of the initial contributors of the J-STEP pilot run and the program has since been successful in implementing a recycling program, organic farming, and horticulture. With the support of local organizations like The New York Community Bank Foundation and The WE CARE Fund, J-STEP continues to help adults with disabilities progress into the workforce and to further develop a green living program and an energy conservation program at Pal-O-Mine.

School is back in session at Nassau County Community College (NCC), and Nassau InterCounty Express (NICE) bus service has reinstituted its school year service to accommodate the more than 3,100 students and employees who ride the buses to the college’s Garden City Campus.

The 16x express bus offers non-stop service from the Hempstead Transit Center to NCC, and the n43 route is extended from Roosevelt Field to NCC during the school year. This fall also marks the launch of NICE Bus’s Brand Ambassador Program, which utilizes student “ambassadors” to introduce and assist their fellow students with the particulars of NICE bus service, from stops to routes to schedules.
