I was never an Apple person. I learned on a PC, I used them throughout my high school and college days, and I couldn’t fathom – or didn’t want to, more accurately – ever learning to use a Mac, let alone liking it.

Well, all that changed once I became introduced to the Apple world at my first office job. Now, not only do I prefer it, but I don’t even remember how to work my way around a PC. Everything seems so much easier and userfriendly that I can’t recall why, exactly, I was ever so opposed to broadening my horizons.

Now, I’m not fully indoctrinated mind you. I own an iMac, a couple of iPods and – finally, after years of carrying around an outdated, semi-obsolete “flip” phone – an iPhone 4S (iPad to follow at some point in the near future I’m sure). I have never camped out for a product, I don’t upgrade every time a new one comes out and I’m sure there are many who are far more educated when it

comes to using them.

But still, I love Apple, especially my iPhone. To be fair, given my prior cell phone experience, just about anything short of a tin can with a string would seem like an amazing upgrade. But this truly is. And my favorite part of it all?

Why, that would be Siri.

Siri, the “Intelligent Assistant” who comes pre-installed on the iPhone 4S and 5 models… Siri, who, for all his/her (“I was not assigned a gender,” it replies when questioned) quirks and occasional glitches, has quite the personality.

Obviously, it was designed to be utilized in such a way as to make life easier by creating reminders, providing directions, weather updates and more. Not that I have used it for this purpose too often. No, I prefer to antagonize my poor little personal assistant with bizarre, out-ofleft field queries – just to see what responses I might get.

I remember shortly after purchasing my iPhone when I decided to experiment with the Q&A possi-

bilities. Most were met with “I’m sorry. I don’t understand. Did you mean…” or some variation of that. Exasperated, I finally exclaimed at one point, “Why are you so dumb?!” Without missing a beat, Siri replied, “Why do you hate me? You don’t even know me!”

Hysterical laughter.

Seriously? This thing was obviously so much smarter than it let on.

Fast forward to just a little over a month ago, after Siri and I had more of an opportunity to become acquainted, and I asked, “Siri, did you know today is my birthday?” He/she/it responded, “I’m so sorry Jamie, I didn’t know. I didn’t get you anything.”

Apparently, we were now friends.

With the launch of the new iPhone and software update, Siri is now being marketed as “new and improved” and able to overcome many of the previous glitches that had previously marred its novelty. Just imagine all the fun conversations to be had now!

Most definitely an Apple person now. No going back.

Stepping Together

Long Island Crisis Center (LICC) will hold its 4th Annual Let’s Walk, Let’s Talk…Stepping Together to Prevent Suicide event on Sunday, September 30th on the Boardwalk at Riverside Blvd. in Long Beach.

Registration begins at 11 a.m.

At 12 noon, a brief program will highlight two high school students: Jamie Isaacs and Brooke DiPalma.

Jamie is a victim of intense bullying. She considers herself a strong survivor due to the fact that the bullying started when she was in second grade at 8 years old and lasted till the end of seventh grade at 13 years of age. The bullying only stopped when she transferred to the Knox School in St. James, a private school, where she is currently in 11th grade.

During these years, however, she has evolved from victim to activist founding the Jamie Isaacs Foundation For AntiBullying, writing her story in the book, In Jamie’s Words, and working with both local and state legislators to pass strong anti-bullying laws.

Brooke DiPalma is a student at West Islip High School who decided to address the issue of suicide prevention and awareness when her

father committed suicide.

She created the “P.S. I Love You” Campaign that went viral when she did a YouTube video. In the video, she asks everyone to look out and care for others who may be having suicidal thoughts. She designated a day in February in her school to be known as P.S. I Love You Day. Once she spread the word, it was adopted by many other schools, both locally and in other states. On that day, the students raise money and donate the proceeds to organizations that are work in suicide prevention. The Crisis Center was selected by Brooke and her fellow students to be the recipient of 2012’s fundraising.

The Crisis Center, now in its 41st year, is dedicated to increasing suicide awareness, educating everyone about the warning signs of suicide, and destigmatizing the subject of suicide and spreading the word that “it’s okay to ask for help.”

“Recent statistics about suicide underscore the importance of the Crisis Center’s 24/7 hotline for anyone to be able to access at critical times in their lives,” states Linda Leonard, Executive Director. “Our Walk is an opportunity for anyone

who has been touched by suicide, either directly or indirectly, to talk openly about a subject that has, for too long, remained in the shadows.”

Suicide and suicide prevention affects everyone: · For the first time since 1998, suicide is in the top ten leading causes of death in the U.S.; · It is the third leading cause of death for adolescents 14 to 19 years of age; · It is the second leading cause of death for young adults 19 – 24 years of age; · Elderly suicide rates are 50% higher than for young people; · One of every five suicides in the country is committed by a returning soldier from Iraq or Afghanistan – or once every 90 minutes; · For every suicide, there is an average of 13 suicide attempts; · 8 out of 10 people who commit suicide tell someone first.

Eagle Anniversary Parade

Thousands of spectators watched as 2,000 plus Eagle Scouts, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Police Explorer Scouts, Boy Scout leaders and dignitaries marched in the Eagle Scout Centennial Parade held recently in Rockville Centre. Nassau County’s Theodore Roosevelt Council of Boy Scouts of America (TRCBSA) and the National Eagle Scout Association – Arthur R. Eldred Chapter, sponsored the Eagle Scout Centennial Parade and commemorative ceremony to pay tribute to Arthur R. Eldred, the first Eagle Scout and the more than two million Eagle Scouts in America. Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano spoke at the ceremony congratulating the Council, Eagle Scouts and Boy Scouts on the occasion of the 100th anniversary, recognizing that the parade symbolized the impact that the Boy Scouts of America has had on millions of boys across the nation.

The presence of Eldred’s relatives at the ceremony made the day even more memorable. Major medical research organizations also promote the professional knowledge and public understanding of the history of healthcare practices through exhibits or archives. For example, the National Institutes of Health includes an educational arm on the History of Medicine, and the New York Academy of Medicine opened a Center for the History of Medicine and Public Health in 2012.

“Only by knowing our past in medicine will we be able to develop new innovations in the future,” said Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, MACP, Senior Vice President for the Health Sciences and Dean, School of Medicine.

“The displays in the exhibit are a teaching tool to understanding a timeline of progress for medical practice in areas such as treating trauma

and injuries, infectious diseases, and common illnesses that have affected people for many generations.”

“This new exhibit underscores the continued importance of libraries in the University’s academic and research missions,” said Andrew White, PhD, Interim Dean of Libraries, Stony Brook University Libraries. “Even in today’s technology driven information age, libraries continue to play a longstanding role in collecting information about both the past and present. It is equally important for Stony Brook as Long Island’s largest research library to preserve such unique collections, which are also examples of primary source information, whether printed, digital, or physical items like in this exhibit.”

“My father began collecting medical instruments in the early 1960s, and he quickly saw the value in keeping these so that young people would be educated by seeing medical instruments used in the past,” said Barbara Russell, daughter of Dr. Mills and Brookhaven Town Historian. “He would be happy to know that what started out as a small collection has grown into something large that can educate many,” added Russell, speaking about her father, who continued collecting medical instruments until his death in 2009.

“The medical instruments and objects exhibited are a visual presentation of the timeless challenges of treating illness and injury,” explained Carla C.

Keirns, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Preventive Medicine, and Medicine & History, Stony Brook University School of Medicine, and one of the curators of the exhibit. “As a whole the objects indicate the similarities and differences in the ways doctors have treated illness and injury for more than a century.”

The exhibit features three primary glass displays. Each display is organized by a single history of medicine theme. These themes are: Visiting Doctors, Diptheria and Whooping Cough (Pertussis), and Hazards of the Job. Dr Keirns pointed out that until the beginning of the 20th Century, health care from birth to death generally happened at home, even surgery and especially childbirth. A new exhibit at the Stony Brook University Health Sciences Library that displays medical instruments and objects from the mid-1800s to the 1980s illustrates the evolution of modern medicine. A concept initiated by the Suffolk County Historical Society, Healthcare Instruments – Past and Present was developed in partnership with the Stony Brook University Libraries and Stony Brook Medicine.

The exhibit showcases instruments from the collection of the late Dr. R.Sherman Mills of Setauket, a family physician on Long Island who practiced medicine from the 1940s to early 1980s. The exhibit opened September 13th, and will be on display for the entire 2012-2013 academic year.

Currently 40 medical instruments from Dr. Mills’ collection are featured in the Stony Brook exhibit, which is the first in a series of displays at the Health

Dr. Keirns said that these advances evolved into a new emphasis on preventing infectious diseases. Items in the display such as a diphtheria kit (circa 1920s) and a vapocresolene lamp (circa 1880s) used to treat whooping cough and other throat ailments are instruments no longer in use.

The Hazards of the Job display shows what tools doctors used in trauma medicine before emergency rooms and EMT teams became a routine part of medical practice during the 20th Century. On Long Island, the workplace environment in the 1800s and part of the 1900s

posed serious risk for injury in industries such ship building, maritime work, oystering and fishing, agriculture and manufacturing.

Accidents such as a fall from a horse-drawn wagon or a serious laceration to a limb at the work place often led to amputation. Dr. Keirns said that changing technologies, work patterns, and improved medical practices made loss of limbs and death from accidents much less common over time. An illustration of this progress is exhibited by a surgical saw that was used into the 1980s for amputations, in contrast with a 21st Century fixator that trauma surgeons at Stony Brook University Hospital routinely use to save limbs.

Some items in the displays indicate the similarities of certain medical practices decades ago to today’s practices.

This year, Beach Cleanup 2012 was held on Saturday, September 15th, at Robert Moses State Park, Field #2 from 10 a.m. until 12 noon.

Hundreds of volunteers combed the beaches and collected over 2000 pounds of debris. For the 26th year, Beach Cleanup 2012 was another big success!

“Thank you to everyone who came out for Beach Cleanup 2012,” Senator Johnson said. “We had a wonderful response again this year.

Our 345 volunteers gathered a ton of garbage from the beach and helped raise awareness about the harmful effects of littering

and dumping on our shores. Thanks also to all who brought along donations for our local food pantries.”

The data collected from the Beach Cleanup will be compiled by the American Littoral Society and sent to the Ocean conservancy in Washington, D.C., where it will be analyzed and compared with data from around the world.

The information is used to develop national and international programs and policies to control debris so that our beaches will remain clean and safe.

It is also used by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to evaluate

the effectiveness of existing laws and programs to prevent debris from washing up in the first place.

The Long Island Beach Buggy Association and the Long Island State Park Region cosponsored the event.

Numerous c o n s e r v a t i o n organizations, sportsmen’s groups, and Girl Scout and Boy Scout Troops from our area participated.

This year at the Beach Cleanup, non-perishable food items were collected to donate to the local food pantries where supplies have been badly depleted.

This summer, 13 Long Island credit unions combined efforts to assist thousands of needy families and children across the region and bring an end to hunger.

The collection, which ran from June 2nd to June 30th, was a huge success.

Participating credit unions accepted food and monetary donations at

their branches and local supermarkets throughout Long Island with all proceeds benefiting Island Harvest and Long Island Cares, Long Island’s leading hunger relief organizations.

Together the credit unions collected an astonishing total of 3,460 pounds of food and $31,213.21. After six years

of collection, the credit unions are proud to announce that their efforts have produced $247,570.43 and 18,040 lbs. of food for Long Island’s hungry.

“The food donated by the Long Island Credit Union Cooperative has allowed us to provide 1,129 meals for families in need,” said Paule T.

SIXTH BATTALION PARADE - The Nassau County Fire Department’s Sixth Battalion Parade, which consists of Fire Departments from Seaford, Wantagh, Levittown, Bellmore, North Bellmore, Merrick, East Meadow, Massapequa and North Massapequa, was recently hosted by the Seaford Fire Department. This is three year-old Dharma. She is one of the rescued dogs I wrote about last week, and her story breaks my heart. Dharma’s ear has been badly ripped (healing now), her face is scarred and bares witness to the unspeakably cruel life she has led. Apparently, she was used as bait to train the fighting dogs.

Perhaps she was chosen because she is petite (only 36 lbs), demure and sweet.

Despite the unthinkable cruelty that she has suffered at the hands of man, she loves people. She is truly a special soul and deserves to be in a loving home with people who will cherish her and return the love she is so anxious to give.

To quote Brookhaven Animal Shelter director Dori Scofield, “She forgives the humans who mistreated her. After all, dogs are most forgiving creatures.

They put us humans to shame.”

Dharma is all gentleness and loves to give kisses. You can see the sweetness of her soul shinning in her bright eyes. Unfortunately, Dharma has been bitten and attacked by the fighting dogs in training so many times that she must be the only dog in the household.
