As a result of my daily commute having been recently increased from 15 minutes to anywhere from 45 minutes (on a good day) to… oh, let’s say an hour plus on a normal morning during rush hour, I have had the overwhelming privilege to observe the shenanigans of one of our favorites: the fellow motorist. And here I thought residential, stop-and-go driving was bad. To be clear, there is a certain nuance to the pleasure of trailing behind a line of school buses, to the point that you manage to hit every single stop sign and traffic light within a five-mile stretch. And let’s not forget the classic inching forward while reading street signs – oh wait, I wanted to turn three blocks back…let’s just throw the car in reverse, why don’t we.

But that’s nothing compared to highway and parkway driving. Head out to the open roads, and it’s a whole new ballgame. There are those who feel the need to merge at speeds approaching 70 miles per hour, all the while paying no attention to the speed you may be approaching at. Make way, because they’re coming regardless! Then there are the people who seem to have an aversion to using that shoulder portion leading up to an exit ramp, instead preferring to come to a screeching halt right in their lane – your lane – as they contemplate whether this is really where they need to get off. Umm… drive much? Oh, but let’s not forget my favorite – those who make a habit of driving at night with their brights on, blinding all those in front of them with

their hi-beam glow. Are you afraid of the dark? Is that the issue? Are the dozens of streetlights and headlights from your fellow motorists simply not enough to guide the way? Perhaps nighttime driving is not for you. We all do stupid things from time to time. Whether from distraction or a momentary lapse in judgement, these things happen. But when you are operating a piece of machinery capable of taking another human life, perhaps we should do our best to keep these idiotic idiosyncrasies to a minimum. Pay attention, put the phone away, save your makeup application, shaving and hairstyling for another time… oh, and when the sign says “Lane Ends,” believe it. Sincerely, Your Fellow Driver

TROTTING FOR TURKEY - Students at the Farmingdale School District’s Saltzman East Memorial Elementary School recently participated in the “Turkey Trot,” a program designed to promote a healthy and happy lifestyle. The lesson was designed to teach students the importance of wellness, physical fitness and charity. Students brought in canned goods and ran a mile during their lunch periods. The canned goods were then donated to a local food shelter. Students in all grades participated and the event was deemed a huge success.

The Young Professionals Chamber of Commerce (YPCC), a program of the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce, hosted its 10th Annual Business Leadership Competition at Farmingdale State College on Wednesday, November 28th. The Long Island Ducks today were presented with a proclamation from the Suffolk County Legislature, including Suffolk County Legislator Rick Montano, in recognition of winning the 2012 Atlantic League championship. walk-off bunt single in the bottom of the ninth inning. Lyons was later named the Most Valuable Player of the Championship Series. The Long Island Ducks are members of the

Spelling A Winner Charles E. Schwarting Elementary School in the Plainedge School District recently held its annual schoolwide Spelling Bee. Fourth- and fifth-grade students prepared for the spelling bee by conducting classroom bees. The top two spellers from each class then competed for the schoolwide honor and the chance to compete at a regional spelling bee. Out of the 14 students who took on the challenge, fourth-grader Lauren Macaluso from Brooke Myers’ class took the top prize. This year’s

runner-up was fifth-grader Jake Scarry from JoAnne Bono’s class. Lauren will move on to compete at the regional spelling bee at Hofstra University in February. Plainedge wishes the best of luck to

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Rebecca Alesia reminds residents that the Town is continuing to accept nomination forms for the 15th Annual Women of Distinction awards program. “Each year, the Town has the privilege of honoring designated ‘Women of Distinction’ in each of eight categories,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “Winners will be recognized in March 2013 in celebration of Women’s History Month.” The Councilwoman noted that anybody who would like to submit a candidate for the “Women of Distinction” need only fill out a nominating form and submit to the Town prior to the December 31st, 2012, deadline. Nominating forms have been distributed to libraries throughout the Town. They can also be found at Town Hall or can be downloaded from the Town’s website, www.oysterbaytown.com. “Anybody is welcome to submit an application, including those who have done so in the past and whose candidate was not been selected,” Councilwoman Alesia said. Women who either live or work in the Town of Oyster Bay may be nominated in the following categories: 1) Arts: Outstanding woman who has contributed to the cultural life of the community through theatre, dance, music, art or literature. 2) Business: Professional woman in a position as owner, CEO or high-level manager of a business or industry. 3) Community and Civic Affairs: A leader, supervisor, administrator, manager or member who has made a contribution to

Holiday On Ice Show Town of Oyster Bay residents and their families are invited to come out and kick-off the holiday season by attending the third annual free Holiday On Ice Show at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center. According to Supervisor John Venditto, on Saturday, December 15th, from 6 to 8 p.m., the center’s skating students will do choreographed routines to music. Admission is free but residents are encouraged to help others by donating two canned goods, which will be collected at the event by Island Harvest. Some of the country’s most outstanding skating talent will be performing at the show, adding their own artistic flair to the evening’s festivities. Among those expected to perform will be Senior Ladies National Competitor Joelle Forte, Junior National Pairs Medalists Darbie Burke and Griffin Schwab and Junior National Competitor Emmy Ma. “The Town is fortunate have such accomplished

skaters at this show,” Supervisor Venditto said. “Spectators are sure to marvel at their grace and athleticism.” In addition, the talents of students who participate in the Town’s figure skating program will also be showcased. The event will also feature a friendly match between the Elves vs. the Reindeers, members of the Town’s ‘Tot Hockey’ team. To help bring overseas troops a feeling of home during this holiday season, the Town is taking part in the American Red Cross ‘Holiday Mail for Heroes’ Program. Holiday greeting cards will be available in the lobby for residents to fill out prior to and during the show. “Sending a touch of home to American men and women who serve our country is the perfect way to express your appreciation and support during the holiday season,” Supervisor Venditto said. “I ask each person who comes to this event to take time out to write out a card to be sent

to our service men and women who protect our freedom. It will certainly help make their holiday a little bit brighter.” A visit from Santa will round out the event, and children will be able to visit with Santa following the show if parents or family members would like to take a photo. The Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center is located centrally at 1001 Stewart Ave. in Bethpage. The indoor facility offers a full service snack shop, a pro shop and a fireplace to warm yourself by. They also offer year-round lessons and hockey instruction. The 6 to 8 p.m. Public Skating session at the Center will not be available due to the show. However both the Town’s outdoor rinks, located at Marjorie R. Post Community Park in Massapequa and at SyossetWoodbury Park, will be open.
