F
ollowing the devastation left in the wake of Superstorm Sandy and the horrific tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, the students and staff at Islip’s Maud S. Sherwood Elementary School dug deep into their hearts and their pockets. Throughout the month of December, students donated their spare change, raising $875 as part of the school’s Caring Coins collection. The proceeds were donated to the American Red Cross, directly helping those affected by the hurricane. Heeding a call from the Connecticut PTSA, the students then spent several days creating “snowflakes” for Sandy Hook.

Less than an hour before school was dismissed and the holiday vacation began, the halls of Connetquot Elementary were filled with song and excitement as students, staff and PTA parents joined together as one chorus in joyous holiday spirit. In typical fashion, music teacher Eileen Egbert made a grand entrance into the main office with her piano and PA system. Accompanying her for the
December 21st singalong was a talented entourage of fifth-grade students who led the school in seasonal favorites, including “Jingle Bells,” “Frosty the Snowman,” “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” Students read from their songbooks in loud and lovely voices. The elation was heightened when a gentleman in a red suit, a “jolly old soul,” entered
the school for a visit, accompanied by his “elves,” PTA moms who brought gifts for every child. “It was a lovely moment in Connetquot that reminded everyone about the power of music to bring our community together,” said Principal Deborah Smith. Photo by: Greg Fasolino, Syntax

The Learning curve
248969
By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I hate learning new things. I do. Sure, it’s great to broaden your horizons and add skills to your repertoire, but the actual learning process? Not so much fun. I prefer to fast forward to the part where I miraculously become highly proficient at something (which sometimes never happens) rather than muddle for too long in the learning curve portion. The funny part is that, with most things, once this “curve” has been navigated, you often realize that the new thing you were so
hesitant to take on wasn’t so bad in the first place. Simple, even. Just took a little getting used to, was all. Over time, we seem to be able to adapt to anything. Think about it. Look back on all your years in school… weren’t you nervous the first time being tested on a particular subject? Didn’t you get butterflies the morning of a big presentation? Wasn’t your initial reaction to any massive projects to immediately push them to the back of your mind and procrastinate? New = Frightening then, and it still does, to some extent, now.
They often say you should try one new thing each and every day – whether something as simple as tasting a new food, reading a new book or buying a new pair of jeans…right on up to the more monumental decisions of whether to search for a new job or buy a new house or travel the world. New = Exciting. It signifies growth, maturity, experience – all those things associated with moving onward and upward. Sometimes, all it takes is a little help navigating the curve to ultimately see the path for what it is – a straight line to improvement.

the Island Park school. “They were so grateful for everything we brought for them,” said Ms. Pennington. “They lost so much in the storm and were quite overwhelmed with the generosity shown by our students and school.” In addition to the gifts, the packages included letters and poems of encouragement from Steve Taff’s English classes and artwork designed by Laura Vogelsberg’s art students. According to Ms. Pennington, the Island Park school displayed the notes and artwork in their front lobby. Kind Words Kind words do not cost much. They never blister the tongue or lips. In the wake of the devastation left behind by Superstorm Sandy, many across Long Island were left with nothing. When the students at Islip Middle School heard of the destruction to the Island Park School District, they decided to take action. In an effort organized by school social worker Shari Pennington, the Islip students “adopted” Island Park’s Lincoln Orens Middle School. Through various fundraisers and donations, the Islip students collected funds that were used to purchase gift cards, games and school supplies. Students in John Wenzel’s technology class went the extra mile and built an Adirondack chair, which was raffled off to help raise funds. On December 14th, Ms. Pennington and Islip Middle School Assistant Principal Chad Walerstein delivered the goods to

Deadline Extended
The deadline to apply for the Sheltering and Temporary Essential Power (STEP) Program has been extended to January 18th, 2013 for Suffolk County residents. The FEMA Sheltering and Temporary Essential Power (STEP) Program assists in performing temporary repairs to restore power, heat and hot water to primary residences. STEP is intended to help residents to shelter ‘in place” in their homes pending more permanent repairs. Suffolk County residents who wish to participate in the STEP Program should call 2-1-1 by January 18th, 2013 to set up an appointment for an assessment of their home. Once the assessment is completed, the scope of work will be determined and communicated to the program participant. The program manager will schedule a contractor to perform the work needed on the residential property. Work is required to be completed within sixty days of the assessment of the home.

Family and friends of all ages gathered for a festive morning in East Islip at the high school’s 17th Annual Breakfast with Santa holiday party. Hosted by teacher Kelly Schwender and her child development students, the December 17th event brought joy – and a visit from Santa – to local preschoolers enrolled in the school’s Toddler High program. The high school
students had earlier helped the youngsters with various hands-on holiday art projects. During the breakfast, held at the high school library, the elder volunteers guided their younger pals over to Santa’s lap for photos and presents. “Breakfast with Santa is a real opportunity for the Toddler High parents to observe how well their children are progressing
and to see the closeknit relationship that is growing between the high school students and their children,” said Israel Malinowitzer, the school’s guidance director. “The children have been together since September, so this event is very special to all of the students and parents and brings the first half of the year to a happy ending.”

On December 13th, members of the Islip High School Gay-Straight Alliance and Students Together Against Racism, along with their advisers Janet Schlageter and Melissa Grucci, attended the Islip Town Anti-Bias Task Force’s Ambassador Program.
During the program, the important subject matters of bias, prejudice, discrimination and bullying were discussed with the students through the use of guest speakers and videos. Additionally, the students met with other Town of Islip students and
shared ideas during smallgroup discussions on how to be “upstanders.” The students will return to Town Hall to complete the program on February 28th, at which time each student will be sworn in as an ambassador of good will.
