“There was a lot of football excitement in RCK today,” declared Danielle Naccarato, the principal of Ruth C. Kinney Elementary. Students from kindergarten through fifth grade celebrated the coming of Super Bowl Sunday in the school’s gymnasium on February 1st. RCK physical education instructors Bonnie Rabin and Bernie Ruhlig – joined by kindergarten teacher and football fan Karin Hipp
and LIU Post’s Vincent Hamel – set up various football-related activities for students to participate in. The youngsters enjoyed taking on the roles of quarterback, running back and kicker; learned some fun facts about the Super Bowl and the two competing teams and cities; and had the opportunity to vote for either the San Francisco 49’ers or Baltimore Ravens to take home the trophy on Feb. 3. Many of the students were

dressed for the occasion, as it was “Football Friday” and the children had been encouraged to show their school spirit by wearing their favorite football attire. “Ms. Rabin and Mr. Ruhlig did a great job and the students really enjoyed themselves,” said Naccarato.

The winning models won pins as well. “Each of the designers came up with wonderful ideas and the show was definitely a success,” said art teacher Heather Toomey. “I am so proud of the Fashion Class. Spring has sprung. That’s it. I’ve decided. One sunny day amid a week of snow and sleet and rain, and it’s official. Enough of this winter wonderland nonsense. Funny, since we have really only had one substantial snowstorm over the course of the last three or so winters; but the one was… well, quite a storm, shall we say. And just like that, all the relatively pleasant winters of the past few years have been forgotten – wiped out from the collective memory. Isn’t that always the way? One season gives way to the
next – and we, as a society, go from complaining about the cold, to whining about the spring rain, to being exhausted by the oppressive heat…and then, oh no, here comes that autumn chill again! One endless cycle of wishing for something other than what we have, only to promptly wish it away as soon as it’s within our grasp. We are a flaky bunch, aren’t we? And to think other societies would give anything to live in a temperate climate such as ours, complete with four seasons – and the occasional natural disaster of course. Seriously, in the last year or
two, we’ve experienced two substantial hurricanes, a blizzard of epic proportions, a minor earthquake…am I forgetting anything else? Dare we ask – what next? Well, what’s next for me is spring. Beautiful, mild, clear and crisp. Spring. My favorite season, when the summer is still looming, everything is blooming and the days take on a renewed, vital energy that has been missing throughout the long winter of hibernation and doldrums. Sure, it may officially be a month or so away – but the mentality is here now. Embrace it.

Julianna Longo, a fifth-grader at Ruth C. Kinney Elementary, has been selected as a Suffolk County-level winner in the musical composition category in this year’s PTA Reflections contest. For her prize-winning entry on the theme of The Magic Of A Moment, Longo wrote two very descriptive paragraphs about a magical moment that she experienced while at the beach with her family and friends, reflected in “Shining Bright,” her musical composition for the viola.
“Julianna is a very talented and dedicated young musician,” said her orchestra teacher, Angela Fetcho. “She did a great job making every note sound like an event from her day at the beach, and described
each measure of her music in well-written paragraphs. The description allows the listener to understand which notes and dynamics represent all of the events from her magical day.” Longo, who has been studying viola with Fetcho since third grade, will now move on to the state level of the Reflections competition, and has been invited to the PTA Reflections showcase on April 6, where she will be honored for her excellence in musical composition for grades 3-5. Eric McKenna, a soccer standout for East Islip High School since he was a freshman, signed a National Letter of Intent on February 8th to play for Villanova University. His proud parents were in attendance. The senior, a center midfielder who has played the sport since age 5, will join the Wildcats this September. While at Villanova, McKenna plans to study economics, with a likely major in business. “It’s a good school and I liked the coaches,” said McKenna, who was impressed when he

Dear Fellow Business Owners, We are writing to you on behalf of the East Islip Community Chamber of Commerce, Inc. (the “EICC”), which is a not-for-profit chamber of commerce serving the communities of East Islip, Great River and Islip Terrace, and which acts as a voice for your business interests in both political and public venues, and which is often tasked with the responsibility of learning and understanding the needs of the businesses in our community, attracting new businesses to our community, investing substantial time and effort into the vitality of our business community, and supporting valuable community-oriented programs. With that said, we need your help in expanding our organization in order to enable the EICC to not only have a larger footprint in the surrounding business communities, but to also have a stronger voice when pursuing your needs as a local business. Approximately five years ago, a few business owners joined together and started the EICC, and these business owners along with the many others that have since joined the EICC, have made substantial strides in bettering our business community and also have made many notable community accomplishments, such as the 9/11 Memorial located at the East Islip Public Library, annual coat drives, annual Thanksgiving Day food baskets for local churches, and lighting up Main Street with holiday lights and wreaths. Many of you have been approached over the years by EICC members to join and have not done so; however, we still would very much appreciate your input on what we can do to help be a chamber of commerce that benefits the entire community. I have listed below a few reasons why to join a chamber and hope that one will be of interest to you: • Membership expands your network of customers and business relationships. • Involvement with local school districts. • The EICC promotes the organization to the residents in the community who may become customers, clients and workforce for your business. • The EICC may serve as a referral source for your business among its members and the community. • The EICC holds periodic networking events. • Surveys show that customer perceptions are enhanced by chamber of commerce membership. • If you make it known that your product or service makes great client or employee gifts, you could wind up with a very nice flow of business from your fellow EICC members. • You may be able to line up some lunchtime sales or parties featuring your products at local businesses to help employees with gift shopping (especially at Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day). • You may qualify for less-expensive health insurance and business insurance available to Chamber of Commerce members. • You can find out about local events where you might set up a booth and promote your business. • You’ll meet good, reliable sources for products and services such as professional services (accounting, legal, banking, insurance, etc.), printing, computer support, etc. • You’ll be referred to other EICC members’ contacts. • You have a good chance of meeting local retailers who may be interested in carrying your products. • You’ll have an opportunity to engage in joint ventures with other local businesses, such as cooperative advertising or trunk shows. • Your business name can be associated with improving your community, since chambers of commerce generally work on civic improvement, legislation favoring local businesses, and economic development. • You may have access to mentors who can help you develop your business; or you may be able to serve as a mentor to someone else. Please feel free to contact the EICC for more info via e-mail president@eichamber.com, mail or at 631 772 9342. Whether or not you decide to join, you can still have a voice. We hold meetings on the last Wednesday of every month at 7:00, which meetings are often held at local establishments or the East Islip Public Library. Details can be found in local advertising or on our website at WWW.EICHAMBER.COM. Thank you, YOUR 2013 EAST ISLIP COMMUNITY CHAMBER OFFICERS AND DIRECTORS

Honor A Veteran
At the 8th Annual East Islip High School Key Club Talent Show fundraiser, Bruce Morrow took first place for his original hip hop dance number.
This is an awesome feat because, Bruce is profoundly deaf. Bruce is currently a student in the Cleary School Secondary Program which is located
at East Islip High School. He choreographed his own dance routine set to Universal Mind Control by Common and was the only student with a hearing
loss to compete among his hearing peers. Other acts included rock bands, singers, instrumentalists, comedic routines, and dancers of
various genres (including tap dancing and Irish dancing). The talent show lasted for three hours with each act lasting 2-3 minutes. The grand finale
included Mr. Falkman cutting off his long hair and donating it to Locks of Love.
