Cancer Walk For Hope CancerCare will host the 10th Annual Lung Cancer Walk for Hope on Sunday, November 4th, at the Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course, in Woodbury. The lung cancer walk was founded in 2003 with 60 walkers and has grown to include more than 1,200 participants. The fundraising goal for this year’s event is $250,000. Lung cancer is often referred to as a “silent” cancer due to the stigma and lack of public awareness about the disease. CancerCare, a national nonprofit, responded to the need to support people coping with lung cancer and their loved ones by launching a lung cancer program, which provides free counseling, support groups, education, and financial assistance. On-site registration for

the Walk is $40.00 for adults, $20.00 for students ages 13-22, and $10.00 for children 12 and under. All registered walkers will receive an official Lung Cancer Walk for Hope T-shirt. Registration and check-in begins at 8 a.m., and the opening ceremony is scheduled for 9 a.m. The walk kicks off at 9:30 a.m. CancerCare would like to recognize our generous sponsorships from Genentech, Ices for Andrea, Marks Paneth & Shron LLP, Hint Water, and PopChips. Their support for this event ensures that CancerCare can continue to provide free professional support services for people facing lung cancer and their families. To learn more, register, or donate, please visit www.cancercare.org/lung cancerwalk.

Seeking Participants Mercy Medical Center is seeking local residents to participate in an historic study that has the potential to change the face of cancer for future generations. Men and women between the ages of 30 and 65, who have never been diagnosed with cancer, are needed to participate in the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS3) that will enroll a diverse population of up to a halfmillion people across the United States and Puerto Rico to help researchers to better understand the lifestyle, environmental, and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer. On Tuesday, November 13th, from 4 to 8 p.m. Mercy will be a local enrollment location at which participants can join the study. Those taking part will be asked to read and sign an informed consent form;

complete a brief survey; have their waist circumference measured; and give a small blood sample. Prior to the onsite enrollment, individuals will complete an online comprehensive survey that asks for information on lifestyle, behavioral, and other factors related to their

health. Those interested in participating can preregister on line at: www.cps3LongIsland.org. Participants will receive follow-up surveys to complete every few years. Researchers will use the data from CPS-3 to build on evidence from earlier American Cancer Society studies that played a

major role in understanding cancer prevention and risk, and have contributed significantly to the scientific basis and development of public health guidelines and recommendations. For further information about enrolling at Mercy, call 516.62.MERCY.

You probably want to work with someone local who received good reviews in online rating services or who was recommended by someone you know and trust. Use tools like Google Places to help find dealers near you. • Is open and up front with customers and is knowledgeable about their cars. • Provides vehicle history so you can buy with more confidence. Car Wash To Compete jlynn@theneighbornewspapers.com

www.facebook.com/instepwithjamie

East Islip High School’s kickline held a successful car wash at Rita’s Italian Ices on Main Street during the weekend of September 21st, a fundraising event intended to raise money for the team’s planned trip to Orlando, Fla. in March to participate in the National Dance Alliance’s c h a m p i o n s h i p competition. The car wash was just

one of many fundraisers the team plans to hold this year in order to alleviate the cost of the trip for the students. “The efforts of the team members and the support of their parents are the things that will make our fundraising efforts a success, giving each of these girls the opportunity to represent East Islip High School at the NDA

Nationals,” said the team’s coach, Denise Naccarato. The next fundraiser for the kickline team (along with the school’s three Career Academies) is the annual Halloween Family Fun Night on October 25th, followed by a Chinese auction on November 30th, both to be held at East Islip High.

Full disclosure: I am a Yankee fan. Always have been, always will be. That said, I fully respect those who are not. However, as with politics, when a rivalry takes a turn toward bitter hatred, I lose that respect. Let’s be reminded that, contrary to larger, more world-defining issues, baseball is a game – a highly profitable one, yes; but still, just a game. I laugh when I hear those who use the Yankees’ exorbitant payroll as a valid reason for despising each and every player on the team. Need it be pointed out that just about every team in the MLB employs numerous multi-millionaires on its roster? Is the difference between $5 million for one player versus $20 million for another really that different in the larger scope of things? These are grown men playing a game for a living.

Let’s face it – they are all grossly overpaid. The same can be said for most rock stars, members of Hollywood’s elite, just about all professional athletes – and even some members of a few more universally respected professions. You know, like lawyers and accountants and Wall Street executives… So yes, I understand the criticism directed at certain members of the baseball world whom fans feel have not pulled their weight, who may not have truly “earned their paycheck” this past season. I wholeheartedly agree. But seriously, do you mean to tell me that if a member of your favorite team went on to win the World Series, this extravagance would somehow be deemed more acceptable? I don’t know what it takes to “earn” $20 million, but I’m pretty sure playing baseball doesn’t qualify regardless of

the outcome of the games. It’s the system as a whole that is unbalanced. And, if we’re being totally candid, I’m willing to bet that there are few among us who would turn down such a lucrative opportunity if it meant a lifetime of financial security. So perhaps we shouldn’t be so quick to judge. I enjoy my entertainment as much as the next person. And yes, when my team puts on such a pathetic showing as they did this past postseason, I am filled with just as much frustration as the next person. But then common sense creeps in… just because someone signed a $20 million check for a player, does not guarantee that they will succeed each and every day. We are all only human, despite how inhuman such sums of money sometimes seem. Let’s all save the hatred for an issue that truly matters.

students at CRES participated in the CREScent Summer Reading AllStar Program. Students not only read over the summer, but created projects of their choice based on their reading. These projects were brought in during the first week of school and used to decorate the school hallways and classrooms. As a reward for all of their hard work, the students who participated in the program were invited to march in the Islip High

School Homecoming Parade. In addition, children received a CRES-cent for each book project they brought to school. These CRES-cents were placed in a schoolwide raffle, from which one student from each grade level was chosen as the CRES Reading Super Star. These Super Stars were given sashes, created by art teacher Bethany Fisher, to wear as they carried the CRES Reading All-Star Banner in the parade.

Dr. Richard Orlandi and his staff at LaserToenailCenter.com offer in-office treatment of toenail fungus with a new revolutionary laser that kills toenail fungus. “The Pinpointe Laser is a major breakthrough in the treatment of toenail fungus. It is the newest and most effective FDA-approved treatment for toenail fungus now available to the public,” Dr. Orlandi explained. The Pinpointe Laser has appeared on Good Morning America, Fox News NY, ABC News and The Doctors TV show, All of these videos can be seen on their website, LaserToenailCenter.com. The general public is just becoming aware of this highly effective laser treatment that kills fungus underneath the toenail without pain. “The gentle laser light shines through the toenail, and the infrared light directly kills the fungal organisms. FDA studies started in 2007 reveal that

over 80% of the treated patients grew out normal looking toenails after just one treatment. Patients are extremely happy having this new treatment choice.” Dr. Orlandi continues saying, “The painless treatment requires no anesthesia, usually takes 20 to 30 minutes for all ten toes, has no side effects and uses no harmful UV radiation. Since there is no pain, you can walk out just like you walked in, with no restrictions. Toenail polish and shoes can be worn immediately after treatment. Excellent results are commonly seen following treatment of this condition. Healthy, clear toenails are a general indicator of good health, and there is no need to be embarrassed by unsightly fungal toenails.” For further information, contact Office Manager Arrianne at 631.669.4955.

It was one for the books, as the varsity football team clinched their first victory of the season by defeating the Bellport Clippers in a homecoming nail biter. Leading 28-7 at halftime, the Buccaneers held on to win the game 28-27. A bright, sunny day provided the perfect setting for the Islip School District’s Homecoming 2012. Community residents lined Main Street and showed their spirit by wearing the district’s purple and gold

colors, as the annual parade, led by the grand marshal, high school security guard Karen Ernst and her family, weaved its way from Islip Town Hall to the high school athletic field. Students representing their respective grades demonstrated their school spirit and creativity through their unique float designs, while the high school marching band, kickline, and cheerleaders showed off their musical, dancing and crowd-

pleasing talents. Additionally, members of the middle school cheerleading team and the PAL showed their school support by marching in the parade, truly making the occasion a community event. During halftime the marching band provided musical entertainment, while the cheerleaders and kickline wowed the crowd with their energetic cheer and dance routines.

Each year at Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School, students are tasked with the challenge of continuing their daily reading throughout their summer vacation. “The children work so hard during the school year to become strong readers,” remarked Principal Jeannette Feminella. “Summer reading is the best way to maintain all the progress they make each year.” This past summer, the

International Business Globalization students met with the owner of the facility to discuss public relations. “Once again,” Malinowitzer added, “they learned how important tourism is for economic success, even in the Bahamas.” While in Nassau, East Islip’s Career Academies were granted a private meeting with the current governor-general of the Bahamas, Sir Arthur Foulkes. “He was extremely friendly and answered questions from the students,” Malinowitzer said. “He spoke about the Bahamian government, his position and how he represents the queen of England. After the interview session, he invited all of us to sit down and have lunch.” Finally, the students visited a straw market, learning the art of bartering for items they wanted to purchase. “It was another opportunity to educate the children on how many Bahamian residents open small booths and earn income from their weekly sales,” said Malinowitzer. “This trip was absolutely the best educational experience for the Career Academy students,” he concluded. “It provided them so many opportunities to help prepare for their future endeavors.” Photo by: Greg Fasolino, Syntax

island.” A two-hour kayaking trip in the local mangrove swamp provided information on local organisms and water samples. “The expedition gave the students opportunities to study and compare this area with Long Island’s waters,” said Malinowitzer. The students next visited Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, where the public relations director of the Miami Dolphins football team provided a tour of the entire facility. “They allowed us in the dressing room area,” recalled Malinowitzer. “The students were able to take pictures of some of their favorite players’ lockers.” In the second phase of the field trip, the Academies moved on to Nassau in the Bahamas, initially focusing on undersea explorations. Said Malinowitzer, “We traveled to three locations, where students snorkeled with a school of fish, viewed a shipwrecked boat that had been underwater for a long time, and then took a close look at how sharks live in the area and search for food. We then traveled to a dolphin encounter, where the students interacted with the dolphins and learned how they function.” After the encounter, the students were split into groups. The Environment Green students learned how the dolphins are trained and fed, while the

Last spring’s Key West/Bahamas field trip for East Islip High School’s International Business Globalization and Environment Green Career Academies proved the perfect balance of education and recreation, from the science of the Everglades to the inside scoop on government in the Bahamas. The annual excursion began May 15th, with an airboat trip around Everglades National Park as the first event. “The students were given a firsthand look at the environment and how it is being preserved by the Florida government,” said Career Academy director Israel Malinowitzer. “We saw some rare birds, unique trees and a number of alligators enjoying the water and keeping an eye out for their meals.” While in Key West, Career Academy students visited the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum, climbed the nearby lighthouse, viewed a special tourism presentation emphasizing the economic impacts for the area, and took a train tour of the city. “The students were shown a variety of landmarks, including the home of President Truman,” said Malinowitzer. “We also traveled through the Cuban community and were able to see their homes and how their culture interacts with the other families on the

INDUCTED INTO PROGRAM - On October 9th, five Bay Shore High School students were inducted into the Keep Islip Clean (KIC) program as Junior Commissioners. KIC’s objective is to enable and encourage young citizens to play an active role in making the Town of Islip a cleaner and more beautiful place in which to live. Congratulations to Sara Chishti, Margaret Colbert, John Corrado, Madison Flotteron, and Steven Masciale for demonstrating environmental concern for their town and for executing important social, civic and academic responsibilities.

may have only been in second-grade on September 11th, 2001, but she vividly remembers being grateful that her father, Thomas, a lieutenant in the New York City Fire Department, was unharmed. So, it was an honor for Katie to be asked to use her artistic abilities to create a pin in commemoration of the

10th anniversary of that fateful day. Katie received a request from family friend Michael Fitall, a lieutenant for FDNY Ladder Company 143, to design a lapel pin as a tribute to the 343 firefighters who lost their lives on 9/11. “I would like this tribute to reflect not only the memory of that day, but also the 343

Towers, a purple and black flag with the numbers 343 embossed on it and the words “Never Forget.” As a thank you, Katie attended the parade and received her own copy of the pin, as well as a letter of gratitude from FDNY Fire Commissioner Salvatore J. Cassano. Additionally, Katie is using her artistic skills to

attain her Girl Scout Gold Award. A member of the Girl Scouts for 10 years, Katie is working with the South Shore Community Organization to create seasonal craft projects for children. The Gold Award is the highest honor given to a Girl Scout and all materials for the projects must be donated.

Keeping It Clean

Five East Islip High School students were inducted into the Keep Islip Clean program at an October 9th ceremony held at Islip Town Hall West. Keep Islip Clean, founded in 1989, encourages town residents to participate in cleaning up roadside litter. Deputy Supervisor Trish Bergin Weichbrodt led the assembly in the Pledge of Allegiance, and speakers included three KIC officials – Executive Director Nancy Cochran,

Chairman William Johnston and CoChairman Pamela Raymond – as well as educator Darien Logan. East Islip High School Principal William Brennen was also in attendance. Councilman Steven J. Flotteron presented certificates to East Islip’s Jessica Carino, Elizabeth Loizides, Rachael Maretsky, Abigail Shulman and Caleb Shulman, who were all sworn in as KIC Junior

Commissioners along with students from 10 other school districts in the Town of Islip. The title of Junior Commissioner designates environmentally conscious and civicminded high schoolers recommended to represent their communities in helping to implement KIC’s programs (such as Adopta-Highway, Adopt-aWaterway and AntiGraffiti) and developing their own cleanup

Fire Prevention Week

In recognition of Fire Prevention Awareness Week, members of the Islip Terrace Fire Department visited with students in grades K-3 at Connetquot Elementary School on October 10th. Escorted by several firefighters, fourth- and fifth-graders from the school walked across Manhattan Boulevard on October 10th and 11th to take an actual tour of the firehouse facility.

At both the school assemblies and the firehouse, firefighters talked about the importance of fire prevention and how to properly deal with dangerous situations that may arise in connection with fire. The 368 participating children learned about the need for fire alarms, how to respond if they were in a smoke-filled room, and the importance of the

“stop, drop and roll” procedure if they ever were actually in a fire. “The firemen were very engaging and educated all who were in attendance,” said Connetquot Principal Deborah Smith. “The children proudly wore their ‘fire hats’ home and learned lessons on safety around stoves and other household electrical appliances.”
