Thankful By: Jamie Lynn Ryan This holiday season, it seems especially appropriate to reflect on those things we are thankful for, individually and collectively. Considering all that most of us have been through – and continue to go through – over the last month, I believe most of us have found a new appreciation for those things formerly taken for granted. For one, if you are fortunate enough to spend this Thanksgiving holiday with your family, friends and loved ones, consider yourself ahead of the game. Sure, you may have to forgo the traditional turkey dinner at home, but was the holiday ever truly about the food to begin with?

Perhaps, for some. Food, coupled with football and Black Friday shopping, right? Well this year, it is about something else, something far more important to the big picture. Togetherness. Compassion. Charity. That sense of fulfillment that only comes from these qualities… if only it didn’t take natural disasters and national tragedies to bring this sort of behavior out. I suppose the better part of human nature is always there, just below the surface, pushed aside by the daily monotony of life’s obligations. But to see it on display… that’s something the likes of which we don’t witness nearly often enough. This Thanksgiving – and

Christmas, while we’re at it – the emphasis should be on the people we choose to celebrate with. The rest is material – the food, the gifts, the decorations – and can be modified on the fly. But the people… they cannot be replaced. We have all lost a lot over this last month; at the very least, a sense of security and complacency. Maybe this isn’t a bad thing. Perhaps it is a reminder that we should never take things for granted, and should always be moving forward. You simply never know when things will come to a grinding standstill. Let’s all enjoy the moments and the memories this holiday season. Absorb each and every one and savor them. Happy Thanksgiving.

East Islip Middle School students running in the 2012-2013 student government elections have ensured their classmates are well aware of not only who they are but also what their positions on the issues are. The 15 civic-minded middle schoolers created videotaped campaign speeches during visits to East Islip High School’s video production studio on October 24th and 25th.

The speeches were filmed under the guidance of high school technology teacher James Connell by two of his video production students, junior John Callagy and senior Brian Potter. Running for president are Noah Charvat and Ryan Gurnick, while Victoria Goldfader, Philip Lastorino and Rich Sill are vying for vice president. Claudia Banville is facing off against Emma Elliott for the office of secretary. Jessica Churpita and Elisa Mingo are running for treasurer. The six students seeking election as sixth-

LONG ISLAND – A new report has just been released which reveals 7 costly mistakes that most homeowners make when selling their home, and a 9 Step System that can help you sell your home fast and for the most amount of money. This industry report shows clearly how the traditional ways of selling homes have become increasingly less and less effective in today’s market. The fact of the matter is that fully three quarters of homesellers don’t get what they want for their home and become disillusioned and - worse - financially disadvantaged when they put their home on the market.

With homes and businesses destroyed, a gasoline shortage plus some people still without power and heat nine days after Hurricane Sandy, many New York soccer leagues have cancelled games for the foreseeable future. The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) and Region I, both under the umbrella of the United States Youth Soccer Association, are providing relief to soccer clubs and leagues adversely affected by the hurricane. Region 1 is offering up to $2,000 in grants and ENYYSA will match every grant approved by Region I. Applications must be returned to the ENYYSA office at 53 North Park Avenue, Suite 103, Rockville Centre, NY 11570, prior to the Region I, December 15th deadline. The application is attached. “Many of our members have suffered a tremendous amount of hardship from Hurricane Sandy. It’s times like these that all Americans, including the soccer community, come together to help,” commented ENYYSA President Richard Christiano. “We applaud Region I’s generosity in helping those adversely affected and Eastern New York will match every grant they approve for our members.”

Funds Raised For Families patients during their critical hours of need, we’re proud to step up and take care of our colleagues when they need it most,” said Michael Dowling, president and chief executive officer of North Shore-LIJ. “Even after Hurricane Sandy left death and destruction in her wake, there are untold stories of North Shore-LIJ caregivers who continued to come to work, despite losing their homes and most of their possessions to flooding and fires. Their extraordinary selfsacrifice, dedication and commitment are truly inspiring. Equally inspiring is the outpouring of support from North Shore-LIJ employees for their struggling coworkers. I extend my deepest appreciation to all of our employees who have generously donated money and time off to their colleagues in need.” Hundreds of North Shore-LIJ employees have already benefited from the health system’s employee relief efforts. Following are a few of their stories. Of the $2.3 million pledged thus far for relief

efforts, about $2 million represent the proceeds from Monday evening’s Lenox Hill Autumn Ball at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Manhattan. Event proceeds typically go toward the hospital’s capital projects, but in the wake of Hurricane Sandy and the destruction it caused throughout the tristate area, Mr. Dowling decided to redirect funds from the event toward North Shore-LIJ’s employee relief fund, as well as charities supporting other hurricane victims in the community. Those wishing to support the effort can send a donation by check payable to the North Shore-LIJ Hurricane Sandy Employee Relief Fund and mail it to: NSLIJ Health System Foundation, 125 Community Drive, Great Neck, NY, 11021, or contribute on line at: https://support.northshor elij.com/sandyrelief. Stay On Long Island Initiative Suffolk County Community College and Stony Brook University have formalized a new partnership that will provide full-tuition scholarships annually to full-time students who graduate from Suffolk and transfer to Stony Brook. The agreement was signed by Dr. Shaun L. McKay, President of Suffolk County Community College, and Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD., President of Stony Brook University. As part of the agreement, Stony Brook University will offer one full-tuition scholarship to select graduates from each of Suffolk’s three campuses, each academic year. Nominees for the scholarship must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.75 and, in addition to superior academic achievement, must d e m o n s t r a t e contributions to their campus and communities through activities and student leadership. Scholarship finalists will be recommended by Dr. McKay and selected by Stony Brook’s scholarship committee. The agreement also provides the scholars with counseling and advising

support as they transition from Suffolk to Stony Brook. Dr. McKay said the agreement is a continuation of his “Stay on Long Island” initiative. “I am pleased to expand the ‘Stay on Long Island’ initiative through our new partnership with Stony Brook University. The ‘Stay On Long Island’ program is one I have been working on closely with Presidents from Long Island’s four-year institutions to ensure select graduating scholars from Suffolk receive scholarships to attend colleges and universities right here in our community. Through these scholarships, students now have every chance for continued academic success and an increased likelihood that they will continue to live and work on Long Island. The ‘Stay on Long Island’ initiative is a way of cultivating the intellectual capital of those who have the best potential for transforming our region,” said Dr. McKay. Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD., President of Stony Brook University stated, “Stony Brook University and Suffolk County Community College have

a long-standing history, and an on-going commitment, to serve the educational needs and aspirations of Suffolk County residents. Each year more than 600 students from Suffolk County Community College enroll at Stony Brook, one of the country's leading research universities and a member of the AAU. Stony Brook is proud to sponsor scholarships through the ‘Stay on Long Island Initiative’ and we applaud the efforts of Suffolk County Community College and the other partner schools to help us keep the best and brightest minds here on Long Island. Our County and our State deserve no less.” Suffolk has similar agreements in place with Adelphi University, Briarcliff College, Dowling College, Five Towns College, Hofstra University, Long Island University - C.W. Post, Long Island University Riverhead, Long Island University - Brentwood, New York Institute of Technology, St. Joseph’s College and St. John’s University.

The North Shore-LIJ Health System announced today it has raised about $2.3 million for a relief fund that will be used primarily to benefit hundreds of employees’ families devastated by Hurricane Sandy. Within 48 hours of landfall, the 16-hospital health system had placed 62 families into temporary housing, and those efforts have continued for hundreds of additional employees who were displaced. In addition, through the health system’s dedicated Emergency Employee Resource Center (EERC), North Shore-LIJ employees have already contributed over 1,000 vacation hours – totaling 137 business days – to impacted employees who will need to take time off to try to get their lives back in order. The EERC also has an online Community Forum where employees who want to help their coworkers in need can connect with them to coordinate direct donations, rides to work and other assistance. “Considering how so many North Shore-LIJ employees care for their

Playoff Run

MILESTONE BIRTHDAY - Islip Town Councilman Anthony Senft recently recognized Catherine Ragusa on the occasion of her 90th Birthday. One of ten children, Catherine continues to enjoy the company of her family as much as possible.

East Islip High School’s varsity field hockey team fought hard in its Suffolk Class A two-game playoff run last weekend, beating Centereach but ultimately falling to Bay Shore in double overtime. The November 10th contest against Centereach’s Cougars, played in East Islip, yielded a 3-0 shutout for the home team. Scoring

for East Islip (ranked No. 2) were Nicole Levy (twice) and Alexa Martino, with assists from Juliette Polis and Emily Cassar. The next day’s game, also at home, proved more difficult, as the Lady Redmen and Bay Shore Marauders (ranked No. 3) battled to a 1-1 tie during regulation. Bay Shore (who would go on to lose the finals to Sachem East

on November 12th) finally scored with 7:42 left in the second overtime, ending East Islip’s spirited playoff run. Brianna DeMeo scored EI’s sole goal, assisted by Kendall Allmendinger, while goalie Arianna Kreush made 14 saves. Photo by: Glenn Reed

Bags Of Love

The family and consumer science department at East Islip Middle School came up with an inventive way to help victims of Hurricane Sandy. The “Bags of Love” program involved a districtwide collection of hotel-size toiletries such as shampoo, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, hand sanitizer, lotions, lip balm and baby powder.

Items donated by students, teachers, parents and community members were separated into boxes, then inserted into special drawstring bags created by students at the middle school. These “bags of love” were made from washcloths, using sewing skills the students had learned in the classrooms of FACS teachers Rena Costello, Dani Franzese and

Patricia Emmons Fritz. Over 300 bags were constructed as of the charity drive’s November 9th deadline. “This way, people in need could not only get toiletries but a washcloth too,” said Franzese. “This was basically a service learning project that involved the entire school.” Photo by: Greg Fasolino, Syntax

Food Pantry Benefit

The East Islip Middle School’s student government and National Junior Honor Society teamed up recently to host two fun-filled educational activities to benefit a local food pantry. Movie Night on October 26th found students enjoying an evening at school watching the classic Halloween-themed film, The Nightmare Before Christmas. In lieu of an admission fee, all of the attendees brought in at least three

nonperishable food items to donate. The second event took place on Election Day. The middle school’s students had an opportunity to participate in the democratic process and vote for the presidential candidate of their choice by bringing in a nonperishable food item and placing it in one of two boxes, depending on their choice for president. Each student who brought in a food item and cast a vote was entered into a

raffle for a Target gift card. The school’s mock election results mirrored the national election, with President Obama claiming a 53 percent majority of the votes and candidate Mitt Romney receiving 47 percent. The winner of the raffle prize was Gregory Cassiano. A total of 11 large boxes of food items were collected through these two events for donation to the St. Mary’s food pantry.

Round One Victory

Avenging their only regular season loss (a 1310 defeat on October 13th), East Islip’s varsity football squad intercepted visiting Smithtown West five times on the way to a crushing 23-0 shutout in the first round of the

will announce the winners at the December 13th Board of Education meeting. “We had a wonderful day speaking to all the fifthgraders in the district and were impressed by the students’ commitment to stay drug-free forever,” said SADD adviser Bridget Lopiccolo. “I think the SADD members participating in this program did a wonderful job – they were excellent role models for the fifthgraders.” Photo by: Greg Fasolino, Syntax

Ribbons Of Support

Students across the East Islip School District honored Red Ribbon Week from October 22nd through 26th in an annual program focused on drug awareness. The culmination of the weeklong program came on October 26th, when East Islip High School’s Students Against Destructive Decisions Club traveled to all four elementary schools in honor of Red Ribbon Week. During the visits to fifth-grade classrooms at Connetquot, John F. Kennedy, Ruth C. Kinney

East Islip Middle School student Michael Stevens was recently selected to perform at the New York State School Music Association’s seventh annual Piano Showcase to be held in Rochester, on November 30th. The process of selection for this prestigious All-State recital is very competitive, requiring all applicants to have received a perfect score on a Level 6 NYSSMA solo audition. Stevens had achieved this score every year since his first eligibility in third grade, only to be selected as an alternate each year. This year the eighthgrader was finally chosen

to be one of only 13 AllStaters out of a statewide pool of 87 applicants in grades 4-12. Stevens began his piano studies at the age of five, studying with Nancy Sessions and later with Joan Horn. Eventually he was invited to perform at two Long Island Philharmonic Master Classes – first at age 8 with Norman Krieger and then at age 10 with Seymour Lipkin – while he was a student at East Islip’s John F. Kennedy Elementary School. He has also won acclaim for his horn musicianship, and as a sixth-grader, won the overall first prize at the 2011 Northeast Horn Festival concerto competition held at the University of New Hampshire, outpacing high school and college students alike. He was the recipient of the 2011 Gretchen Snedeker Memorial Scholarship at the New York Summer Music Festival, where he was the first student ever

to win both of NYSMF’s student recital competitions on two different instruments (horn and piano). This past year, Stevens was a finalist in the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra concerto competition and the LISMA International Music Competition. Most recently, he received the 2011 Dianne Flagello Scholarship and the 2012 Dorothy Hales Gary Scholarship at the Manhattan School of Music Precollege, where he double-majors in horn and piano (studying piano with Summit Music Festival artistic director Efrem Briskin and horn with the New York Metropolitan Opera orchestra’s Barbara Jöstlein Currie). Stevens currently serves as first horn of both the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York and the Manhattan School of Music Precollege Philharmonic Orchestra.

Another student, Robert Walters, served as the DJ, providing Halloweenthemed music and initiating a fun-filled hour of dancing and singing for the little ones, who learned a variety of novelty dances from their elders, including the electric slide, the chicken dance, the limbo and the hokey pokey. “Once again, this event was a huge success and parents and children spent a safe evening collecting candy, playing games, dancing and singing,” said Malinowitzer, who supervised the event with kickline coach Denise Naccarato. “There were many young children at this event and they had a

Dear Readers,

The following Town Shelters and Rescues are reaching out for the community’s help...

From Bulldog Rescue: Due to the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, many of our volunteers have been left without power, evacuated from their homes and tending to getting their own affairs in order. We are in great need of foster homes in New Jersey, Long Island and surrounding areas. This means that if you genuinely want to help a Bulldog who has no where else to turn, we will cover all approved medical expenses and will provide a MCM Rottweiler Rescue crate if needed. If you would like to volunteer to foster, please contact: www.mcmrottweilerrescue.petfinder.com Bulldogrescue1@aol.com. We don’t want to turn away a rescue, and we don’t want to see them end up on the street or in the shelters. We Hempstead Shelter: are taking donations to help with costs of boarding if for some reason Hempstead Animal Shelter is in desperate need of newspaper, towwe can’t find a foster home. We can board as a last resort. els and blankets. We don’t have power, and are running on a generator, which means we don’t have a washing machine/dryer. It is a cold Babylon Town Shelter: 30 degrees most nights. Although we have heat in the kennels, it still I have been asked by the Babylon Town Animal Shelter to try to gets chilly. We NEED people to come in to foster animals - we need assist in the huge influx of pets in need of help. Many of the residents rescues to step up to adopt from the shelter. We have small dogs, of Babylon, as well as other townships on Long Island, have been dis- felines, kittens, adults cats and seniors. Anyone interested in adopting

from the shelter is urged to contact: Nancy Giris at NGiris@tohmail.org; or Wendy Cariello at WCariello@tohmail.org. Any rescues interested in pulling from the shelter are asked to contact: Shari Polen at Spolen@tohmail.org. If you want to help, you can do the following: • foster an animal • donate newspaper • donate gently-used towels/blankets • donate pillows/cases • donate cat carriers/dog cages (all sizes) • donate cat litter/cat food (kitten food) • donate dog toys/dog food (unopened)

It’s snowing as I write this and, like many of you, I haven’t had electricity for ten days now. I’m wearing multiple layers of clothing and gloves, and it feels as if I’ll never be able to get warm again. But I need to reach out to you because our friends, our neighbors and our community needs our assistance.

placed. Some are waiting for the power to be turned back on; others need to rebuild. These people are living with friends and in shelters. One of their serious concerns is their beloved pets. What we’re trying to organize is a list of people available to help, one family at a time. If you can open your home temporarily to a dog or cat - not an unknown stray; rather, someone’s pet - for a limited period of time, you would be helping a family in their worst hour. Many of these families just have nowhere to take their pets while they get themselves back together. With that in mind, please e-mail me if you are able to assist. If you can take someone’s pet, let me know exactly what your requirements are... Dog or cat? Size? Male or female? Friendly with other pets or kids? How long you can foster? If you can’t take in a pet but can help in some other way (maybe transport?), please let me know. And finally, if you have any ideas on how to make this endeavor work and want to help organize it, please let me know. We will take all the help we can get.

Little Shelter: Readers, the Little Shelter in Huntington has been devastated by the storm. Eighteen trees are down and Kennel Two is destroyed. Thank heavens none of the dogs were hurt. Little Shelter is in desperate need of immediate donations (large or small) in order to rebuild and continue their wonderful rescue work and community outreach programs. Call 631.368.8770 or visit little www.shelter.com to make a donation. Do you have a Hurricane Sandy story you’d like to share? Long or short, furry or feathered, happy or sad - please send them to me for publication. Please be safe and warm, visit a shelter and adopt. Remember, Your Best Friend Is Waiting....

Respite Grant Received Pal-O-Mine Equestrian has received a $21,000 grant from the KnappSwezey Foundation in Patchogue. The grant will go towards funding for Pal-O-Mine’s Respite Program. Pal-O-Mine operates multiple

therapeutic riding and educational programs, such as the Respite Program, for individuals with disabilities including children and adults with mental or physical special needs. The Respite Program

provides students with a structured learning environment during scheduled school breaks. Students are able to engage in stimulating activities including horse riding, horse care and arts and crafts while

Sales Tax Relief

For More Information Call: 631-226-2636 - www.theneighbornewspapers.com

Recently, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced an emergency sales tax relief program to ease the costs of reconstructing Suffolk County's small businesses. “Sandy was a devastating storm that affected many small businesses in Suffolk. This program will provide immediate relief for our businesses to rebuild,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. The program provides relief from state and local sales tax on building materials such as windows, sheet rock, flooring and electrical as well as on equipment a business needs to replace that was damaged by the storm. Anthony Manetta the IDA’s Executive Director said, “Making sure our companies operate again efficiently is a main

priority. We have streamlined the IDA process to get our companies to start rebuilding quickly and more cost effectively.” The program will provide sales tax relief for purchase of building materials and for the repurchase of equipment of up to $100,000 in purchase costs. There will be 200 businesses eligible for the program. A business must have 25 or fewer full-time employees to participate. Joanne Minieri, Commissioner of Economic Development & Planning, and IDA Board Member added, “It is absolutely critical that small businesses open and operate again. They are the lifeblood of our local economy.” When a small business owner takes advantage of the IDA's relief program,

the agency will facilitate discussions between them and the Town they operate in. The Town will be able to communicate directly with the business to determine if there are any issues they can develop solutions for. “Partnering with the Towns gives an added level of support to the local business owners in need of help. They could have a question on permitting, or where to access certain Town specific forms,” said IDA Executive Director Anthony Manetta. Small business owners who have had their place of business damaged by Super Storm Sandy are urged to fill out a relief form at w w w. S u f f o l k I D A . o r g . Questions are asked to be directed to 631.853.4802 or e-mail them to: info@suffolkida.org.

improving upon writing, reading and listening skills. Alongside these benefits for students, the program gives parents and caretakers the opportunity to continue their work schedule and regular daily tasks. Pal-O-

Mine understands the importance to offer families an organized, exciting and positive curriculum for children during winter and spring break, summer vacation and major holidays. For more information

Beware The Emotional Toll These past few weeks has been a catastrophic episode in the lives of so many in our Long Island community. With so many agencies, organizations and volunteers working towards a speedy recovery and clean-up, it seems that lives will be back to normal soon. “However, we know that disasters can take a great emotional toll on those impacted by them and can be longer-lasting than the disaster itself,” according to Linda Leonard, Executive Director of Long Island Crisis Center. “As people resume their routine lifestyles and less media attention is given to the crisis, there are those who will be left thinking they are alone and isolated.” At this stage, it is important to recognize

the signs of emotional distress and the Crisis Center has put together a list of warning signs for people to consider: · Sleeping too much or too little · Stomachaches or headaches · Anger, feeling edgy or lashing out at others · Overwhelming sadness · Worrying a lot of the time · Feeling like you have to keep busy · Lack of energy or always feeling tired · Drinking alcohol, smoking or using tobacco more than usual or using illegal drugs · Eating too much or too little · Not connecting with others · Feeling like you won’t ever be happy again Just as important as knowing the warning

signs of distress is the importance of knowing when to ask for help…and that help is available: · Call Long Island Crisis Center, 24 hours a day/7 days a week at 516.679.1111 · Chat online with a counselor at www.licconline.org · Text “LICC” to 839863 “The Crisis Center was able to continue its 24/7 hotlines throughout the power outages. Counselors spoke to many people who were in the midst of dealing with various stages of destruction and loss in their lives due to Hurricane Sandy,” adds Ms. Leonard. “Now we need to make sure that help and support get to those who are trying to manage and survive the disaster emotionally.”

Hurricane Sandy has changed the physical attributes of Long Island and has unfortunately FOREVER changed the value of our homes. The Extreme Weather events Hurricane Irene of 2011 and Super Storm Sandy of 2012 only differed in magnitude due to the Moon Tide. These events will continue more often in the future according to the National Weather Center. Our Government’s and Home Owners need to rebuild and fortify the waterfront to try and reduce the devastation from future storms. Call the “BullDogs” Today at 631-661-1100 for a Free Consultation if: • Your home is uninhabitable and you have a mortgage. • The Storm has made the value of your home less than your mortgage. • You believe that “No One” would want to buy a Home in your area due to flooding. • You are “Struggling” and cannot pay your mortgage and also pay for alternate housing. • Your Insurance proceeds are inadequate to repair and restore your home.
