Pennington and Islip Middle School Assistant Principal Chad Walerstein delivered the goods to the Island Park school. “They were so grateful for everything we brought for them,” said Ms. Pennington. “They lost so much in the storm and were quite overwhelmed with the generosity shown by our students and school.” In addition to the gifts, the packages included letters and poems of encouragement from Steve Taff’s English classes and artwork designed by Laura Vogelsberg’s art students. According to Ms. Pennington, the Island Park school displayed the notes and artwork in their front lobby.

Little by little, things are beginning to get back on track. There are small signs throughout the neighborhood – a few lights on here and there, the glimmer of a Christmas tree through the window, the sound of Christmas songs filtering from the windows of passing cars… Tis’ the time of the season, as out of sorts as many of us may feel this particular holiday season. Life goes on, as we have seen. From storms and floods Light Travels and uncontrollable acts of Unlike other light, which nature, to horrific tragedies scatters, laser light travels from across the globe to our in only one direction. neighbors in Newtown, CT, as much as it seems that things
will never return to normal, somehow, they manage to progress to the point of at least being tolerable. The new normal, I suppose you could say, where we learn to make do while making adjustments on the fly. What is “normal” anyway? Personally, never before have I looked forward to a new year with quite the same level of anticipation. Sure, it’s just a flip of the calendar; but psychologically, there’s nothing quite like saying “good riddance” to a collection of not-so-great circumstances. And so, we look forward. Onward and upward, as they say. There’s nothing like good old-fashioned progress, snail’s-pace as it may be, to

refresh the spirit. For those displaced by Storm Sandy, the phrase “home for the holidays” doesn’t quite apply. But still, just being surrounded by those you love brings a certain degree of comfort that even the most dramatic upheaval can’t displace. Hopefully, within the next few months, the process of rebuilding what was lost will be further along the way to completion, and we can all settle back into our “normal” routines – only this time with a greater appreciation for what we have, mainly those things that cannot be replaced. Happy New Year to all… see you on the flip side.

In the wake of the devastation left behind by Superstorm Sandy, many across Long Island were left with nothing. When the students at Islip Middle School heard of the destruction to the Island Park School District, they decided to take action. Twenty talented music students from Music Simply Music, Long Island’s leading in-home music education program, paid a visit recently to the Momentum at South Bay for Rehabilitation & Nursing Home in East Islip to stage a cheerful musical performance for elderly residents and patients. As part of its Share My Music community outreach program, Music Simply Music arranged for 20 of its students ranging in age from 8 to 40 to play specially-learned songs for residents from the 1930’s and 1940’s, including
nostalgic piano pieces, acoustic guitar and vocals. “Over 40 Momentum residents were treated to an afternoon of music, thanks to our talented, community-minded musicians,” said Nick Ambrosino, Founder and Director, Music Simply Music. “I would like to thank Momentum for allowing us to share the gift of music with their residents. While extremely enjoyable for residents and patients, the event also provided students with an opportunity to give back to the community in a meaningful way and to
continue to express themselves at their instrument.” Music Simply Music is Long Island’s leading, inH.O.M.E. (Hands on Music Experience) music education company, specializing in the teaching of piano, guitar and voice. Music Simply Music provides students with a lifetime of music and the confidence to achieve any goal to which they set their efforts. Founded in 1988 by Nick Ambrosino, a recognized music instructor, master mentor and life coach
specialist, Music Simply Music’s Certified Facilitator’s provide a learning environment that is nurturing, supportive, and creative, where students of all ages reach their fullest potential both as musicians and as people – learning that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. Helping To Protect Your Property From Flood Disasters
Islip Town Councilman Anthony Senft organized a solemn event yesterday with family and friends of the late Lance Corporal Jeffrey Boulos at a ceremony that dedicated a portion of Ocean Avenue in his honor. LCPL Boulos, a U.S. Marine and a resident of Islip Hamlet, was part of the multi-national task force sent on a peacekeeping mission to Lebanon in 1983. He was one of 241 servicemen killed on October 23rd, 1983 when a suicide
bomber struck the Marine Corps barracks. The blast was, at the time, the largest man-made nonnuclear explosion in history. It was the deadliest single attack upon American forces since World War Two. “Lance Corporal Boulos was proud of his service to our nation, and we are proud to have called him our neighbor,” said Councilman Senft. “This street dedication reminds us of the values that he stood for, and that he will always be a part of this
community.” A second suicide bomber struck the French forces that were part of the peace-keeping mission, killing 58 of their paratroopers. The explosions also killed several Lebanese citizens, including four children. A street sign was unveiled yesterday at the corner of Montauk Highway and Ocean Avenue in Islip with assistance from the East Islip and Islip Fire Departments and the Marine Corps League.

“Today was a wonderful day for our students!” exclaimed East Islip High School teacher Bridget Lopiccolo, the coordinator of the school’s Mentor Me program, now in its 10th year. Lopiccolo was referring to the December 6th Meet My Mentor Breakfast, the second in a three-part mentoring event series sponsored by the East Islip/Dowling School Business Partnership’s Career Development Committee, preceded by the Catch-a Career Breakfast on October 24th. Many of the 93 students participating in East Islip’s mentoring program were in attendance at the breakfast, held in the high school’s library. “They were able to meet someone in their desired career field and begin a relationship with a mentor,” said Lopiccolo. “These mentors can provide students with a hands-on experience that will offer them great insight into their future.” She credits School Business Partnership member Beth Abesamis for much of the hard work and diligence involved in placing the students with the right mentors. “Our students buy into Mentor Me because they can see the commitment and enthusiasm their mentors bring to the program,” said Paul
Christopher McCarthy of Island Shore Physical Therapy, doctors Ray Mascola and Aleksandra Wianecka, Cindy Cipolar of the Cleary School for the Deaf, and East Islip School District staff members Christine Cirillo, Donna Marshall and Renee Nelson. “With events like the Meet My Mentor Breakfast and the Career Academies, East Islip is being pretty entrepreneurial in the programs we are able present to our students,” commented Board of Education trustee Glenn Reed, who attended the breakfast along with fellow Board members and administrators. “Having local politicians as well as community, business and civic leaders participate makes these programs even better.” The third and final segment of the mentoring program is Shadow Day, where participating students “shadow” their selected career mentors. Students interested in the medical field will shadow their mentors at various hospitals and dentists’ and ophthalmologists’ offices across Long Island on January 10th, while the remaining participants will have Shadow Day on January 31st. or fame, but by fulfilling their artistic talents and just having fun,” said Jeffares. “The show was a history lesson for the performers. We spent a lot of time researching unfamiliar references in the script and comparing life today with life back then. It was an eye-opener for the students to realize that the family in the play only had a radio and a telephone in their home, and those were rarely used.” One thing Jeffares is sure of is how much fun the performances were for students and audience alike. “Feedback from the audience was hearty laughter all the way through the show,” she said. “You Can’t Take It with You was insanely funny,” added Board of Education trustee Glenn Reed. “A timeless classic brought to life by a very talented and funny cast of students.”

Caturano, Clemens, Connolly, Danz, DeMaio, Kenyon and Willdig are veterans of the Drama Club’s 2011 production, “Our Town,” while Biondi, Connolly and Kenyon were among those who performed in last year’s school music, “Carnival!” Impressive set designs for the event were constructed by art teacher and scenic painter Dan Figliozzi and his class, while Christopher Kenyon was responsible for designing the play’s poster. Stage managers DiOrio and Osburn handled sound and lights. The adept stage crew – Epstein, Geraghty, Ashley Karlin, Jessica Sabal and Walls – were kept busy. DeMaio, Geraghty and Sabal also served as production assistants for Jeffares. The original production of You Can’t Take It with You opened in 1936 and played for 837 performances, winning the 1937 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The 1938 film version, directed by Frank Capra and featuring stars like Jimmy Stewart and Arthur Murray, won 1938 Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director. Acting in such a period production proved educational for East Islip’s thespians. “It’s a hilarious and touching play centering around a loveable and wacky family that judges the quality of their lives not by money

Laughter was in the air as the East Islip High School Drama Club presented the George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart comedy You Can’t Take It with You last weekend, performing to sellout crowds in the school’s own theater. The strong demand for tickets led to an additional Sunday matinee following their two evening shows. “We presented ‘You Can’t Take It with You’ on December 7th and 8th as scheduled,” explained Drama Club director Susan Jeffares, “but the club was thrilled to add a third show on December 9th due to phenomenal ticket sales. We were sold out on Friday and Saturday and entertained 80 people at our Sunday show.” The entire production almost didn’t happen due to district budgetary cuts, but the ever-generous For the Kids Foundation of East Islip came to the rescue. “My heartfelt thanks go out to the FTK Foundation who stepped in and sponsored the Drama Club this year,” Jeffares remarked. “They provided more than 25 students the opportunity to work together as a family and produce a show that made us all proud. As a director, I experienced working with a wonderful group of students who had a goal in mind and worked hard through months of rehearsal and even a hurricane to fulfill that goal.” The cast included Samantha Connolly as Penelope Sycamore, Courtney Kenyon as Essie, Shannon Caturano as Rheba, Andrew Sciallo as Paul Sycamore, Paul Brett (subbed by Nick Caron on December 9th) as Mr. De Pinna, Michael Danz as Ed, Cami Clemens as Donna, Joseph Janover as Martin Vanderhof, Michelle

Under the direction of Ronald Fox, Connetquot’s band ended the evening on a high note with their impressive rendition of Robert W. Smith’s “Ceremonium,” followed by Jule Styne’s 1945 winter classic Let It Snow! Let It Snow! The third night of the East Islip School District winter concert series was chock full of melodious tones as the young musicians of Connetquot Elementary School put everyone in in the holiday spirit at their December 6th concert. After introductions from East Islip Music Director Stephen Guarino and Connetquot Principal Deborah Smith, the school’s orchestra began the musical festivities. Directed by Jaime DeMaria and accompanied by Rachel Axelrod on piano, the young string players tackled three jaunty tunes: Bohemian Stomp by Sandra Dackow, the traditional The Snowman and the 1850 classic Jingle Bells by James Lord Pierpont. Chorus director Eileen Egbert and her charges held down the middle slot of the program, bringing their marvelous harmonies to every inch of the high school auditorium. The chorus’ opening number, David Eddleman’s Bidi Bom, was accompanied by DeMaria's solo viola. After a delightful version of Jill Gallina’s Winter Fantasy, the singers tackled the complex four-part harmony of The Three O’Clock Rehearsal of Combined Band and Chorus for the Very Merry Christmas Musicale, composed by Walter Ehret, Bill Katz and Ruth

All-State Performers
Three extraordinarily talented studentmusicians from East Islip School District – Courtney Kenyon and siblings Leah Stevens and Michael Stevens – performed at the 77th Annual New York State School Music Association Winter Conference on December 1st and 2nd in Rochester’s famous Eastman Theater. Kenyon, a senior at East Islip High School and member of the Drama
Club, sang in the All-State Women’s Choir. Flutist Leah Stevens, a junior at the high school and a member of East Islip’s Tri-M Music Honor Society, performed as principal flute in the AllState Symphonic Band. An eighth-grader at East Islip Middle School, Michael Stevens displayed his technical prowess at the All-State Piano Showcase. “The concerts and performances were
outstanding examples of highly complicated and advanced collegiate-level material, conducted by famous conductors including Anthony Maiello and Dr. Jonathan Babcock,” said Stephen Guarino, East Islip’s director of art and music. “Our young East Islip musicians played with sophistication and poise and helped spread East Islip pride beyond the local community.”

Round One Champs
Their trip to New York City may have been delayed by Hurricane Sandy, but the East Islip High School Academic Team finally emerged victorious in their November 9th first-round match of The Challenge, MSG Varsity’s awardwinning high-school quiz show. East Islip defeated Sag Harbor’s Pierson High School by a score of 395260. The show’s premise involves teams of academically gifted students competing via tests of their knowledge of arts and literature, history, math, science and current events. “The Challenge” began on Long Island 15 years ago but has since expanded to include
almost 200 schools from the tri-state area. The tournament format involves a set of elimination rounds taking place over several months. The regional champs for each area (Suffolk, Nassau, New York City, New Jersey, Westchester, Connecticut) each receive a $2,500 prize for their school, then go on to compete against each other for the title of tristate champion and its $10,000 prize. East Islip’s 2012-2013 team consists of three seniors – team captain William Zachary Purdy, Vincent Sheppard and Peter Zepf – plus junior William Meehan (Purdy and Meehan are veterans of last year’s outstanding
team). Alternate members for this year are seniors William Murphy and Bryan Tadlock. “This was a job well done!” said teacher and team adviser Marylou Ferrieri. Addressing the school, she added, “We would like to thank you all for your support. Your confidence in our team effort has been invaluable to our success, and we are very grateful. We would also like to acknowledge the enthusiasm of the 40 audience members of our core fanbase, ‘The Torques.’ We look forward to returning to the city to compete in rounds two and three sometime in early February.”

Anthony Mastrantonio, owner of Mastrantonio Caterers, and his staff,
The catering company has been in business since 1963, and has operated from its home base at Marconi Manor, 333 Moffitt Blvd. in Islip, for 20 years. They held a free open house dinner for families in need, so they may enjoy a hot meal, warm up and charge needed electronics. The staff also delivered hot trays of food to those wothout utilities, and to churches and shelters. Anthony also teamed up with Amanda’s Army and donated his parking lot across the hall for families in need to receive donations such as clothing, non-perishable food and household items, including cleaning supplies.
LETTERS TO TROOPS - Second-graders in Robb LeVien’s class at Islip’s Maud S. Sherwood Elementary School received a lesson in caring this holiday season, as they worked together to send letters to troops serving overseas. In the cross-curricular letter-writing event, the students thanked the troops for protecting our country and included holiday decorations. The letters will be sent to Robert Birch, uncle of secondgrader Caitlin Flynn, who is currently serving overseas in the United States Navy.
GIVING BACK - Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi stopped by Commack Road Elementary School in Islip to thank the students and lend a hand making food baskets for the needy in their community. In addition, the students also put together boxes to send to the brave men and women serving our Country overseas.
TOYS FOR THE KIDS - The Foreign Language Honor Society at Islip High School got into the holiday spirit this December by collecting new, unwrapped toys. The toys were donated to the Suffolk Department of Social Services, which distributed the toys to needy families throughout Suffolk County.

A festive group of approximately 35 East Islip High School students decorated the school’s lobby for the holidays on December 11th. The students – Christina Coppola, Stephan De Turris, Erin Geraghty and Kristianna Schlosser, to name a few – represented a variety of
school clubs and organizations including the student council, STARS, the Boys and Girls Leaders Clubs, the Cleary School for the Deaf, the Gay-Straight Alliance and all of the school’s honor societies. “It really was a community effort, just like November’s holiday
food drive,” said teacher Frances Li, the adviser for STARS. “The cooperation among club members to help create a warm and festive environment for our students and staff is what the holiday season is all about. It was another wonderful event for the East Islip community.”
AROMA OF EVERGREENS - Visitors to the Islip Career Center (ICC) could smell the aroma of fresh greens and pinecones in the hallways. Students in Mark Haven’s Eastern Suffolk BOCES horticulture class were busy filling special orders of arrangements for the holidays that included door wreaths, table centerpieces, crosses for gravesites, and a wishing well to be auctioned for victims of Superstorm Sandy. According to Mr. Havens, customer orders were plentiful this year, providing students with experience in customer service, deadlines, and meeting with clients when they picked up their orders.
Ambassadors Of Good Will
On December 13th, members of the Islip High School Gay-Straight Alliance and Students Together Against Racism, along with their advisers Janet Schlageter and Melissa Grucci, attended the Islip Town Anti-Bias Task Force’s Ambassador Program.
During the program, the important subject matters of bias, prejudice, discrimination and bullying were discussed with the students through the use of guest speakers and videos. Additionally, the students met with other Town of Islip students and shared ideas
during small-group discussions on how to be “upstanders.” The students will return to Town Hall to complete the program on February 28th, at which time each student will be sworn in as an ambassador of good will.
