The program was a combined effort with country music star Darius Rucker, the United States Marines, the Lindenhurst Fire Department and the Lindenhurst School District. “The Matthew T. Crosson Memorial Scholarship endowment is meant to foster that mission, to keep the vision alive by supporting journalists in training at Stony Brook who will carry on the pursuit of public discourse that Matt so cherished.” The Crosson scholarship will be available to a qualifying full-time junior or senior enrolled in the School of Journalism at Stony Brook University, where Jim Klurfeld, Crosson’s friend and longtime co-host of the public affairs program “Cutting Edge,” is a professor. The recipient must demonstrate a desire to pursue a career in journalism with a demonstrated interest in public affairs. The recipient will also have the opportunity to intern at Newsday or at News 12 Long Island and Newsday.com or a special

rotating internship at all three news outlets. One recipient per year beginning in the Fall 2013 academic year will be chosen by a selected committee appointed by School of Journalism School Dean, Howard Schneider. “This scholarship will be invaluable in supporting students, year-after-year, whose passion will be to pursue reporting in the public interest,” said Schneider. “I can think of nothing more important.” “This is not only a wonderful development for our program but wholly appropriate that it should be in Matt Crosson’s name,” said Klurfeld. “Whether he was a prosecutor, running the New York State Court system, heading the LIA or hosting a regular public affairs television show, Matt's goal was always to find the truth. That, of course, is also the goal of journalism.”

The Toys for Tots program distributed toys and games to Lindenhurst students for the holiday season. The program was a combined effort with country music star Darius Rucker, the United States Marines, the Lindenhurst Fire Department and the Lindenhurst School District. Darius Rucker, the former lead singer of Hootie and the Blowfish, held a contest on Eventful.com and Lindenhurst won. The winning town enjoyed $10,000 worth of toys, games and clothing, purchased at Toys R Us. QUESTION: My jaw is killing me! The pain can be excruciating, sometimes like a sharp stab, or just an ache. Inc. – Harry Chapin Food Bank were on hand to accept donations of frozen turkeys, hams and chicken, along with nonperishable food, toys and cash donations. The turkeys and other items will be delivered by Long Island Cares to households in need of assistance during the holiday season. “Our members and friends generously supported the turkey drive co-sponsored with the Long Island Aquarium. It was gratifying to see so

many big-hearted people willing to go out of their way to bring frozen turkeys to our headquarters. Long Island Cares was appreciative and thankful for the turkeys, canned food and other items, and we’re sure that all the families who will enjoy the turkeys over the holiday will be equally grateful. Two days into 2013… so how is your year going? Have you given up on those promising New Year’s resolutions yet? Has your self-proclaimed “fresh start” gone by the wayside already? Two days in, and you’re wishing for 2014? Funny as it sounds, this is precisely the mentality many have when it comes to their failed attempts to remake their lives. One and done, so to speak, which is silly when you consider there are 365

The Lindenhurst residents on New Year’s Eve of 1936 had many places to go and celebrate. There was Larkin’s on Montauk Highway, which was advertised as being equal to any of the finest Manhattan night clubs. They were the most expensive of the places offering local New Year’s Eve revelry, charging $5 per couple. For that money, there was dancing from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m., with music supplied by Tony Toren and his Orchestra. At midnight, a large dinner would be served and, as stated in the ad, “For this evening only, a young gorgeous Colleen would be hired to give out cigars and cigarettes as found in the most exclusive Manhattan night clubs.” The Original Bologna John’s, which was located on 38th Street near New York Avenue, had Larry Meichner

The Bayview Restaurant on South Sixth Street and West Montauk Highway, owned by Bill and Marge Kay, charged 75¢ per person for not only entertainment, but a six-course Danish-style turkey dinner at midnight. The Knights of Columbus Council 794 held their customary New Year’s Eve party at Bill Allar’s Wellwood Inn, which was near the Monument on Wellwood Avenue. A fine dinner was going to be served, and many novelties were to be distributed as well. The Alcove Bar on West Hoffman Avenue, west of South Broadway, owned by Joe Zwick and Nate Haber, would provide a dinner at midnight, as well as an open bar all evening long.
