Assemblyman Durso Announces Annual Pet Food Drive

Assemblyman Michael Durso (R-Massapequa Park), in coordination with Long Island Cares, is inviting the community to participate in his annual Pet Food Drive to help families keep their pets out of shelters and remain at home where they belong.
Assemblyman Durso is asking residents, community organizations and pet lovers to kindly donate unopened bags of dog and cat food, canned pet food and pet supplies. All items collected will be donated to Baxter’s Pet Pantry, operated by Long Island Cares, which provides free pet food and pet supplies to petowning families in need throughout Long Island.
Donations can be dropped off through April 4, 2025 at Assemblyman Durso’s district office located at 512 Park Boulevard in Massapequa Park or at various other locations throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

Ancient Order Of Hibernians Installation Of Officers For 2025
On Sunday, January 5th, Babylon’s Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) installed their new slate of officers for 2025. The men’s, ladies’, junior girls and junior boys’ presidents and their officers were installed. The Ancient Order of Hibernians in America, St. Patrick’s Division 2 in Babylon Village, recently installed their slate of officers for 2025. Many ladies and men’s members of the AOH came out to
support their incoming officers. Men’s president, James T. McGrath was installed for his 2nd term.
Mr. McGrath oversees the men’s division, which has over 500 members. Lucinda Lauro Rooney was installed as the lady’s president (LAOH) for her first term.
Lucinda is president of over 250 ladies’ members. Also installed were presidents representing the Division’s Junior Girls and Junior Boys.
The Ancient Order of Hibernians in America was founded in 1836 in New York City. It is the oldest Irish Catholic fraternal organization, represented in all 50 states. AOH St. Patrick’s Division 2 was organized on October 6, 1946, and is the only AOH Division in the Town of Babylon. WEDDING MARATHON - Valentine’s Day is a favored occasion for tying the knot, celebrated as the day of love. Whether you view it as the most romantic or the cheesiest day, it remains a highly sought-after date for weddings. On Friday, February 14th, 2025, Town Clerk Gerry Compitello officiated a Valentine’s Day marathon wedding event at the Phelps Mansion in North Babylon, extending heartfelt wishes for love, laughter, and a joyful future to all the couples who exchanged vows that day. Why Car Washes Are Important
Taking care of a vehicle involves more than just maintaining the equipment under the hood. Car washes keep a vehicle shiny and clean, which can help it look good while sitting in the driveway or cruising the highway. However, regular car washes are more than cosmetic.
• Protection from the sun: A car that is routinely and properly washed and waxed is less vulnerable to damage from the sun’s ultraviolet rays.
• Extend the life of paint: Dirt and debris can build up on the paint surface and eventually lead to scratches and other damage. Bird droppings and sap can be corrosive. Washing will help remove grime and protect the paint in the process.
• Preserve the vehicle’s value: Drivers who plan to sell or trade in their vehicles in the future should realize that a wellmaintained car can bring in as much as 20 percent more for above-average condition, according to Kelley Blue Book. Maintaining a clean and shiny vehicle can protect its long-term value.
• Remove salt: Drivers who live near the ocean or in areas where roads are salted in the winter to melt snow may have cars with high salt corrosion rates. Unless it’s washed off frequently, salt can take its toll, leading to damage.
• Improve fuel efficiency: Drivers have felt pain in their wallets at the fuel pump in recent years. Dirty cars may be less aerodynamic and less fuel-efficient as a result. Keeping a car clean may improve its fuel efficiency.
• Maintain the interior: Car washes are not only about the exterior. Keeping a clean and tidy interior can help improve the air quality inside of the vehicle and prolong the life of upholstery, mats and interior components.

Recipe Of The Week: Twice-Baked Sweet Potatoes
Pecans can make any recipe better. Whether they add a nutritious crunch to oatmeal, star as the lead ingredient in pecan pie or give cookies that little something extra, pecans elevate the foods they touch. In this recipe “Twice-Baked Sweet Potatoes” from “Simply Scratch” (Avery) by Laurie McNamara, honey-covered pecans are the crowning touch on sweet potatoes, helping to make this side dish one to remember at any special meal.
4 servings
2 medium sweet potatoes, scrubbed
1 teaspoon olive oil
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
Directions:
1. Preheat the oven to 400F.
2 teaspoons chili powder
1⁄2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1⁄2 teaspoon kosher salt, plus a pinch
2 tablespoons honey
3⁄4 cup coarsely chopped pecans
2. Massage the olive oil onto the sweet potatoes and set them on a small baking sheet. Bake for 1 hour or until a knife glides through effortlessly. Let cool until safe to handle. Keep the oven on.
3. Halve the sweet potatoes horizontally and carefully scoop out the flesh into a medium bowl. Set the skins aside. Add the butter, maple syrup, chili powder, cinnamon, and 1⁄4 teaspoon of the salt and use a potato masher to mash the filling until smooth.
4. In a small bowl, combine the honey, pecans, and a pinch of salt.
5. Place the skins side by side in a small baking dish. Spoon the filling in, dividing it evenly, and top with the honeyed pecans. Bake for 5 minutes. Serve warm.

JFK Library Media Specialist Named ASSET Winner
ASSET WINNER - Congratulations to Lauren Florez, library media specialist at John F. Kennedy Elementary School in the West Babylon School District, for being named a Bright Light Award Recipient by the Association of Suffolk Supervisors for Educational Technologies. She was one of 21 educators recognized across Long Island. Ms. Florez started Databases and Donuts, a before-school opportunity for teachers to become familiar with current technology and the software that is used in the district. She has also helped students in testing grades become familiar with the computer-based testing tools and functions to help them perform their best on the state assessments. In the beginning of each school year, Ms. Florez provides all staff with a postcard with helpful tools, tips and programs to help them to have a successful year. Newest Eagle Scout Welcomed
On Sunday, January 19th, Legislator Kevin McCaffrey joined Troop 2014 in recognizing Matthew Von Buttgereit, West Babylon’s newest Eagle Scout! For his Eagle Scout Service Project, Matthew helped restore the Stonebridge Dock on Robbins Road in the Village of Babylon. He was asked to build three new planters, as the old planters were built by another Eagle Scout many years ago and were falling apart.
Matthew is currently a sophomore at the West Babylon Senior High School. He is an AP student, maintains a spot on the school’s high honor roll, is a member of the Technical Honor Society, and a member of Students Against Destructive Decisions. In Troop 2014, Matthew has held numerous leadership positions, including Troop Historian, Patrol Leader, and Assistant Senior Patrol Leader. He is also a member of the Order of the Arrow,
Scouting’s National Honor Society. Matthew loves being a leader, but his favorite thing is to help others.

Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) is pleased to inform Babylon and Huntington residents about the local Suffolk County Office for the Aging Winter 2025 Senior Advocate Schedule. Senior advocates are County representatives who come out into the community and assist seniors with information gathering, completion of eligibility or recertification applications and referrals to appropriate community agencies.

us to provide our senior citizens with the assistance and information they need in ways that are most convenient to them. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, that a public hearing will be held by the Board of Trustees of Babylon Public Library, Town of Babylon, County of Suffolk, State of New York will be held at the Babylon Public Library, 24 S. Carll Avenue, Babylon, New York in said District on, March 25, 2025, at 6:30 P.M., for the purpose of discussing expenditures contained in the proposed budget for the fiscal year 2025–2026. Copies of the budget document will be made available to District residents commencing March 18, 2025, upon request, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. prevailing time, in the office of the District Clerk located in the Superintendent’s Office of the Administration Building.

Breast cancer treatments are highly effective, which is one reason why the National Cancer Institute can report that the five-year survival rate for non-metastatic breast cancer is 90 percent. However, in certain situations, doctors may feel that the existing standard for breast cancer treatment may not be enough to help women overcome their
disease. In such instances, doctors may discuss clinical trials with women battling breast cancer. The American Cancer Society defines clinical trials as research studies in which people volunteer to help doctors find ways to prevent or treat disease. The National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc.® points out that all current standards of treatment began
