Winter is traditionally a season when blood donations decrease while hospital and patient needs remain the same. Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Muscarella and Town Supervisor John Venditto urge residents to participate in the Town’s Semi-Annual Blood Drive scheduled for Thursday, March 7th. “Approximately every two seconds, someone needs blood,” Supervisor Venditto stated. “That translates into 39,000 units of blood being used every day in hospitals and emergency treatment facilities across the country for patients with cancer and other diseases, for organ transplant recipients, for general surgery patients, for accident victims, for premature babies, to name a few. Donating is quick and easy and is an entirely safe procedure. All materials used during the process are sterile, disposable and used only once…by you. Spring Fever

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Spring has sprung. That’s it. I’ve decided. One sunny day amid a week of snow and sleet and rain, and it’s official. Enough of this winter wonderland nonsense. Funny, since we have really only had one substantial snowstorm over the course of the last three or so winters; but the one was… well, quite a storm, shall we say. And just like that, all the relatively pleasant winters of the past few years have been forgotten – wiped out from the collective memory. Isn’t that always the way? One season gives way to the

next – and we, as a society, go from complaining about the cold, to whining about the spring rain, to being exhausted by the oppressive heat…and then, oh no, here comes that autumn chill again! One endless cycle of wishing for something other than what we have, only to promptly wish it away as soon as it’s within our grasp. We are a flaky bunch, aren’t we? And to think other societies would give anything to live in a temperate climate such as ours, complete with four seasons – and the occasional natural disaster of course. Seriously, in the last year or

two, we’ve experienced two substantial hurricanes, a blizzard of epic proportions, a minor earthquake…am I forgetting anything else? Dare we ask – what next? Well, what’s next for me is spring. Beautiful, mild, clear and crisp. Spring. My favorite season, when the summer is still looming, everything is blooming and the days take on a renewed, vital energy that has been missing throughout the long winter of hibernation and doldrums. Sure, it may officially be a month or so away – but the mentality is here now. Embrace it.

approximately 160,000 children who are diagnosed with cancer each year and frequently lose their hair as a result of treatment, is a small sacrifice in comparison to what these children endure. On Saturday, March 9th, volunteers will shave their heads to help Conquer Kids’ Cancer! The event will be held locally at Johnny McGorey’s Massapequa Park, at 1 p.m. The head-shavings will commence at 2 p.m. They will also be raising money through raffles that have been donated by very generous merchants and friends. This year, they will be honoring Maya Annunziato, Cera Storer and Colin Conaty. It is their hope that the stories of these children give others the courage and hope to live and love each day in all ways. Maya, a 3 year-old Massapequa resident, is battling Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. She is currently in remission and will continue to be treated with chemotherapy

All Oyster Bay Town ice rinks will offer extended sessions on Presidents’ Day, Monday, February 18th, according to Town Councilman Joseph G. Pinto. Due a wide spread cancellation of scheduled winter breaks in most school districts, the Town has also modified its schedule of extended hours throughout the entire week, from February 18th to 22nd. The highlight of Presidents’ Day will be a New York Rangers Hockey Weekend in New York celebration on Monday morning, February 18th from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at its state-of-the-art Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center located in Bethpage Community Park, 1000 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage. The event, which is open to all Town residents, will allow the public a unique opportunity to skate for free while sharing the ice with New York Rangers Alumni and members of the New York Rangers Development Team. “There will be giveaways, games and prizes,” Councilman Pinto said, “and time will be set aside for photos and autographs.” In addition to Hockey Weekend in New York, there will be plenty of sessions available for residents to skate at Town’s facilities throughout President’s week. “Skaters in the Town have the option of skating in the great outdoors at Marjorie R. Post Community Park rink in Massapequa and at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park rink, or

indoors at the state-of-the art Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center located in Bethpage Community Park,” Councilman Pinto said. “Admission prices make it a great value for your recreation dollar.” Marjorie R. Post and Syosset-Woodbury’s outdoor rinks, as well as the Town’s Ice Skating Center in Bethpage, will offer the same President’s schedule which will include public sessions from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, 1 to 3 p.m., and 4 to 6 p.m. Residents can view the rink’s complete schedule and any other modifications at the Town’s website, www. oysterbaytown.com. General admission for Oyster Bay Town residents for two-hour public skating sessions at the Marjorie R. Post and Syosset-Woodbury Rinks is $2.00 for ages two to four, $4.00 for ages five through 17, $5.00 for ages 18 and older, and $2.00 for senior citizens 60 and older and Town volunteer firefighters and auxiliary police with identification. For non-Town residents, the general admission is $2.00 for ages two to four, $7.00 for ages five to 17, $8.00 for ages 18 and older, and $4.00 for seniors. Both Oyster Bay Town resident and non-Town resident children under two are admitted free. If you’re a senior living in the Town of Oyster Bay, and you’ve been thinking about adopting a pet, Oyster Bay Town Councilman Chis J. Coschignano reminds you that the Town has a program called Seniors for Seniors, under which seniors can adopt a pet from the Town Shelter with no adoption fee. “When people consider adopting pets, oftentimes they want a puppy or a kitten,” Councilman Coschignano stated. “Although cute and ‘moldable,’ they can be a handful, especially young dogs with such traits as chewing, barking and jumping. Besides, adult animals can be every bit as cute and playful as their younger counterparts. “Generally speaking, senior canines and felines come already trained and ready for another chance at a good life,” Councilman Coschignano continued. “Also, adult pets usually

require far less supervision and less constant care than high-energy kittens and puppies, making them great choices for older people. Another consideration for those with grandchildren is that puppies and kittens sometimes exhibit playful nipping and clawing, which can injure or frighten children, not to mention that kids can inadvertently be too rough with young animals. Adopting a mature pet who interacts well with children is a great option.” The Councilman went on to say that under this program, the adoption fee and any cost associated with spaying or neutering will be waived for a senior 62 and older who adopts a senior dog or cat. Seniors who adopt a dog would still have to pay the $10.00 license fee. “Older pets have plenty to offer, not the least of which is love,” Councilman Coschignano commented.

Polar Plunge Set

MATH & MONEY - McKenna Elementary fourth grade completed their math unit on money. As a culminating activity they hold their Annual Garage Sale to practice the skill of “counting back” change. Students from 2nd through 6th grade are able to shop. The money raised will go to a McKenna family in need. Photo by: Robin Hepworth

GIVING TREE - McKenna Elementary Student Council sponsored a Winter Wear Giving Tree from December through January. They collected new mittens, gloves, hats and scarves to help needy families in our community and then decorated the tree in the lobby of the school with their collections. All items will be donated to a local charity. Photo by: Robin Hepworth

Polar Bears are expected to be seen swimming in the chilly waters off Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park, Beach and Marina in Oyster Bay on Sunday, March 3rd. There is no need to worry, however, because these Polar Bears are about as friendly as they come. Polar Bears are what they call the hearty and caring people who will take part in the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County, Inc. (ucpn) 9th Annual Polar Bear Plunge benefit fundraiser. The festivities for this much anticipated event will kick off at 1:00 p.m. with the polar bears taking the plunge at 2:00 p.m. “The Polar Bear Swim is a unique and most worthwhile charity event, and I’m pleased to, again, lend the support of the Town to help ensure its success,” said Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto, who has served as an Honorary Co-Chairman for the event since its inception. “The program features brave souls taking the plunge into Oyster Bay Harbor to raise money for ucpn and its many outstanding programs and services. I invite everyone

to participate and have fun.” The Supervisor went on to say that the day will include the music of DJ Danny Kelly, free hot chocolate, coffee, tea, hot dogs grilled by volunteers from the Atlantic Steamer Fire Company, soup, raffles and other surprises. An indoor assembly area will also be available for the event, which will be held rain, snow or shine. The day’s proceedings will benefit the more than 1,800 children and adults with disabilities who participate in programs and receive services through ucpn. “An independent, notfor-profit health agency, ucpn, has endeavored to improve the quality of life for people with cerebral palsy and others with severe disabilities and multiple service needs,” explained Supervisor Venditto. “The organization, which was founded in 1948, also seeks to prevent cerebral palsy and minimize its effects.” Supervisor Venditto said that, as in past years, the organizers anticipate many hardy individuals from the community taking the plunge to raise funds for ucpn. Furthermore,

he stressed that the event needs additional corporate sponsorship, as well as support from community groups, schools and civic and charitable organizations. “I hope many Town of Oyster Bay residents will come out to Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park to show their support,” Supervisor Venditto said. “You will have fun and also help an important cause.” For information about participation as a swimmer or a sponsor, please contact UCPN Development Director Charles Evdos at 516.378.2000 ext. 648 or visit www.ucpn.org.

On Thursday, January 17th, McKenna Elementary held its 1st Annual Hoedown! The students have been working hard over the past few weeks learning how to square dance during their physical education classes. Square dancing has been an integral part of American social life for

centuries. Dancers are prompted or cued through a sequence of steps (square dance choreography) by a caller to the beat of music. They were overwhelmed with the amount of parents, grandparents and relatives who came out to support the students – over 250! Winners were announced at the end of

the day and enjoyed an All American Hoedown Lunch on Friday, January 25th, with Principal Dr. Lowry, Assistant Principal Mrs. Sales and the physical education teachers who worked so hard to make this event a success. Photo by: Robin Hepworth
