Making A Difference n November 4th, Cub Scouts from Pack 776 were committed to making a difference to those people in the Town of Oyster Bay whose lives were severely disrupted by Hurricane Sandy. The boys and families of Cub Scout Pack 776 in Massapequa Park helped out at a Hurricane Sandy Relief Drive, held at Marjorie Post Park. They donated clothes and their time, as well as made trips to affected areas.

This holiday season, it seems especially appropriate to reflect on those things we are thankful for, individually and collectively. Considering all that most of us have been through – and continue to go through – over the last month, I believe most of us have found a new appreciation for those things formerly taken for granted. For one, if you are fortunate enough to spend this Thanksgiving holiday with your family, friends and loved ones, consider yourself ahead of the game. Dear Readers, It’s snowing as I write this and, like many of you, I haven’t had electricity for ten days now. I’m wearing multiple layers of clothing and gloves, and it feels as if I’ll never be able to get warm again. But I need to reach out to you because our friends, our neighbors and our community needs our assistance. The following Town Shelters and Rescues are reaching out for the community’s help...

What we’re trying to organize is a list of people available to help, one family at a time. If you can open your home temporarily to a dog or cat - not an unknown stray; rather, someone’s pet - for a limited period of time, you would be helping a family in their worst hour. Many of these families just have nowhere to take their pets while they get themselves back together. With that in mind, please e-mail me if you are able to assist. If you can take someone’s pet, let me know exactly what your requirements are... Dog or cat? Size? Male or female? Friendly with other pets or kids? How long you can foster? If you can’t take in a pet but can help in some other way (maybe transport?), please let me know. And finally, if you have any ideas on how to make this endeavor work and want to help organize it, please let me know. We will take all the help we can get.

From Bulldog Rescue: Due to the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, many of our volunteers have been left without power, evacuated from their homes and tending to getting their own affairs in order. We are in great need of foster homes in New Jersey, Long Island and surrounding areas. This means that if you genuinely want to help a Bulldog who has no where else to turn, we will cover all approved medical expenses and will provide a MCM Rottweiler Rescue crate if needed. We don’t want to turn away a rescue, and we don’t want to see them end up on the street or in the shelters. It is a cold Babylon Town Shelter: 30 degrees most nights. Although we have heat in the kennels, it still I have been asked by the Babylon Town Animal Shelter to try to gets chilly. We NEED people to come in to foster animals - we need assist in the huge influx of pets in need of help. Many of the residents rescues to step up to adopt from the shelter. We have small dogs, of Babylon, as well as other townships on Long Island, have been dis- felines, kittens, adults cats and seniors. Anyone interested in adopting

A Letter From The Chamber... Dear Members and Friends, I think it’s safe to say, “If these past two weeks haven’t tested our resolve – perhaps nothing ever could.” Now, well into the second week of the aftermath of one of the most devastating hurricanes ever, we find many of our members and neighbors still bailing out their homes, cars, boats and businesses. Sadly, some of them have suffered catastrophic losses. I believe it would be difficult at this stage to exaggerate the wrath of “Sandy” or the effects of her destructive path. It was almost as if she had a “bullseye” set on Massapequa!

When a crucible event such as “Sandy” occurs, it is more important than ever to lean on others. It’s times like these when acts of kindness…random or otherwise go a long way in changing people’s lives. I remember a pastor friend once telling me: “Always show more kindness than seems necessary, because the person receiving it needs it more than you will ever know.” Everyone has been affected to some extent, many if not most, have lost power and had their e-mail systems rendered inoperable. The Chamber was no exception. Regaining access on Nov. 5th, we now hope to help

Having just met with my Board on November 8th, I can assure you that everyone is committed to making sure that we are prepared to offer guidance and/or to help any members who may need assistance in accessing recovery resources. To that end, our next scheduled Chamber luncheon on November 15th @ Smokin’ Al’s will concentrate on helping our members quickly recover. Therefore, I have asked representatives from the Nassau County Industrial Development Agency (IDA) and the Small Business Administration (SBA) to attend and to make themselves available to our members. Clearly not the case, since so many of our families, friends and neighbors from neighboring coastal towns were hit equally hard. Sandy, when all was said and done, showed no favoritism – she was indiscriminate in her battering approach. The chaotic nature of her winds and rising tides spared very few. Needless to say, as a result – these upcoming days, weeks and months will be difficult, indeed. But “hope,” said G.K. Chesterton “is the power of being cheerful in circumstances that we know to be desperate.”

Massapequa will be featured in MSG Varsity’s special, The Marching Bands, airing on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 22nd, on Optimum channel 14 from 2 to 5 p.m. The threehour television event captures 47 of the most talented marching band programs on Long Island in the 50th Annual Newsday Marching Band Festival. Featured will be interviews with band leaders, student participants, commentary from MSG Varsity’s Keith Irizarry and sideline reporting from Suzy Stark. “The Newsday Marching Band Festival is a long standing tradition on Long Island and MSG Varsity is proud to share in the spirit of this timeless event,” said MSG Varsity’s General Manager Theresa Chillianis. “We acknowledge the hard work and dedication that each school commits to their performance and it’s a privilege for us to share the festival with the community.” “This year we are celebrating a fifty-year heritage of a great event that has created fond memories for generations of Long Islanders,” said Paul

Fleishman, Vice President of Public Affairs for Newsday. “And, thanks to MSG Varsity all of the tri-state area can share in the enthusiasm, energy and pride of these outstanding high school marching bands.” Held each October at Hofstra University, the threeday Newsday Marching Band Festival is an annual exhibition presenting some of Long Island’s most talented high school marching bands. A portion of the ticket sales goes to each of the participating high

school bands, as well as the Newsday Marching Band Grant program that assists Hofstra music students in their studies. MSG Varsity’s The Marching Bands television event consists of three, onehour specials – one hour for each day of the Newsday Marching Band Festival, which was held this year on October 23rd, 24th and 25th. Performances from October 23rd will air between 2 and 3 p.m.; performances from October 24th will air between 3 and 4 p.m.; and

performances from October 25th will air between 4 and 5 p.m. MSG Varsity’s The Marching Bands is produced by Emmy and Ace Awardwinning producer Martin Ehrlich. Providing expert commentary during the 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. broadcast is Oceanside Band Director, Michael Vetter and during the 3 p.m. broadcast is Manhasset High School Marching Band Director, Randy Krudsen.
