The popular program, which runs from Monday, January 14th to Thursday, February 21st, is offered at two locations, Broadway Mall in Hicksville and Westfield Sunrise Mall in Massapequa.

The Hicksville Mall program will run on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., and the Massapequa Mall program runs Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Hicksville walkers will meet in front of the escalator near the Ikea entrance, and Massapequa walkers will meet inside on the main level in front of J.C. Penney.

“The Town’s Co-Ed Walking Mall Program is the perfect way to start a new chapter of physical fitness in one’s life, resulting in a more fit and active lifestyle,” Councilwoman Faughnan said. “Mall walking is an excellent choice for

Residents can stay active this winter by signing up for the Town of Oyster Bay’s free Mall Walking Program.

According to Town Councilwoman Elizabeth A. Faughnan, registration is underway for the twiceweekly program that gives anyone, regardless of age, the opportunity to exercise at area malls.

“Many of us exercise regularly in the summer, but not as much when the weather starts getting colder,” Councilwoman Faughnan explained.

“Walking is a wonderful form of exercise, something that can be implemented as a lifelong activity in an effort to stay active.

The Town instituted this program to allow people to work out, regardless of the weather outside, and to learn some valuable tips on how to get the most benefits out of walking.”

Many school districts are starting the new year with lower telephone and Internet costs, thanks to their partnership with Nassau BOCES. The significant savings – at least 15 percent per district – are due to the development of one of the largest private fiber optic networks in the country.

Called Bo-TIE, this network has already connected 16 of the county’s 56 districts and more than 12 others are scheduled to go online this year. The project is expected to be completed in 2015 – a dream come true for longtime Nassau BOCES administrators who conceived the idea more than a decade ago.

When the agency was given the opportunity to lease its educational television channels, Anthony Carfora, Director of the Department of Curriculum, Instruction

and Technology, knew exactly how he wanted to use the funds – giving back to the districts in the form of a dynamic countywide fiber optic network. In just two years, the lease – along with a

series of federal educational technology rebates – has generated all of the funds needed to complete the project.

My purpose of writing this letter is to share with you how one community has come together in the wake of Super Storm Sandy.

I am a member of a Facebook Group called Massapequa Moms Group, which is administered by a very special dedicated person. This group started out to be a simple place to go to share stories, ask questions regarding kids and stuff happening in and around town.

It is now currently a group of 2000+ women and a few men from the Massapequa community.

During and after Sandy, this was and continues to be the place to find out very important information. The MMG allowed us all to stay connected and find out what was happening, from who had electric to share, who had a washer & dryer to use, who need help and how can we get help to them. Insurance, FEMA, local and state questions and experiences all shared daily in the hopes of being able to help one person through the process.

Immediately following the storm, one mom opened her living room up as a donation center and started a “Helping Hands” piece to the site. With the help of a few more moms, tons of donations of clothing, food and toys have been collected organized and delivered to our neighbors needing help.

An Adopt-a-Family for the Holidays program was stared and executed for families and their children.

Many local businesses, many of whom are part of the group have stepped up in unprecedented ways. To only name a few would be insulting to all. There has been an extreme outpouring of business support. This will not be forgotten, as we need to shop, most of us will choose to shop the businesses that helped Massapequa through this time.

Daily, the MMG Facebook page is filled with needs of families and offerings of help.

It has been said the social media has caused a disconnection of how people communicate and interact. Well, I beg to differ, this social media site has done the absolute opposite, it has brought 2000+ people together in the spirit of Community and Humanity. And I for one, have 1999 friends I trust I can count on in a time of need.

Slowly But Surely

Little by little, things are beginning to get back on track. There are small signs throughout the neighborhood – a few lights on here and there, the glimmer of a Christmas tree through the window, the sound of Christmas songs filtering from the windows of passing cars… Tis’ the time of the season, as out of sorts as many of us may feel this particular holiday season.

Life goes on, as we have seen. From storms and floods and uncontrollable acts of nature, to horrific tragedies from across the globe to our neighbors in Newtown, CT, as much as it seems that things

will never return to normal, somehow, they manage to progress to the point of at least being tolerable. The new normal, I suppose you could say, where we learn to make do while making adjustments on the fly.

What is “normal” anyway?

Personally, never before have I looked forward to a new year with quite the same level of anticipation. Sure, it’s just a flip of the calendar; but psychologically, there’s nothing quite like saying “good riddance” to a collection of not-so-great circumstances.

And so, we look forward.

Onward and upward, as they say. There’s nothing like good old-fashioned progress, snail’s-pace as it may be, to

refresh the spirit.

For those displaced by Storm Sandy, the phrase “home for the holidays” doesn’t quite apply. But still, just being surrounded by those you love brings a certain degree of comfort that even the most dramatic upheaval can’t displace.

Hopefully, within the next few months, the process of rebuilding what was lost will be further along the way to completion, and we can all settle back into our “normal” routines – only this time with a greater appreciation for what we have, mainly those things that cannot be replaced.

Happy New Year to all… see you on the flip side.

Many school districts are starting the new year with lower telephone and Internet costs, thanks to their partnership with Nassau BOCES. The significant savings – at least 15 percent per district – are due to the development of one of the largest private fiber optic networks in the country.

Called Bo-TIE, this network has already connected 16 of the county’s 56 districts and more than 12 others are scheduled to go online this year. The project is expected to be completed in 2015 – a dream come true for longtime Nassau BOCES administrators who conceived the idea more than a decade ago.

When the agency was given the opportunity to lease its educational television channels, Anthony Carfora, Director of the Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Technology, knew exactly how he wanted to use the funds – giving back to the districts in the form of a dynamic countywide fiber optic network. In just

two years, the lease – along with a series of federal educational technology rebates – has generated all of the funds needed to complete the project.

“We are excited to be able to provide districts with an opportunity to reduce their costs,” said Pam Christensen, Executive Manager for telecommunications.

“Equally important are the security and educational opportunities that a network of this magnitude will be able to provide.”

Over time, the network will be configured in a series of interlocking “rings” that will provide resilience for the districts’ Internet and telephone

services. It also will provide a robust, secure network that will allow for communication among buildings and other districts during emergencies.

“We’re building it, but believe very strongly that this network belongs to our districts,” said Carfora. “It has enormous potential. We can’t wait to see what innovative ideas our school district’s come up with.”

Some topics that are already being discussed include increased opportunities for students to connect to the technological and academic resources necessary for 21st-century success.

Website Launched

The Nassau County Coalition of Youth Services (NCCYS) launched today its new web site – www.supportnccys.org, which, via the power of crowdfunding, offers individuals the opportunity to help support the 37 not-forprofit agencies that continue to provide services to more than 35,000 children and their families in Nassau County.

The NCCYS, established 15 years ago, is one of the

leading youth service entities in the state of New York and serves as a model for other community youth programs. Its members offer wellmanaged and established youth services including youth counseling, drug and alcohol prevention programs, employment services, suicide hotlines and a myriad of individual community based offerings.

“The launch of the web site is tremendous for the NCCYS,” said Peter Levy,

President of the NCCYS. “We serve the community, but we are also driven by community support. Now we will be able to create heightened awareness of the NCCYS and further demonstrate the truly innovative programs we offer the youth of Nassau County.”

The web site offers insight into the Coalition and its programs. It features a blog and photo gallery with images of youth services programs, workers and participants

“It creates heightened awareness around the very important youth services the NCCYS provides Nassau County and demonstrates the critical role the Coalition plays in ensuring the wellbeing of our children.”

Raising funds, however, is a considerable focus for the 37 member agencies which were hard hit when earlier this year government funding was

cut off mid-stream and withheld for six months.

“We are hopeful that the new web site will help increase support and, ultimately, help to drive funds that will allow us to continue to provide leading youth services to Nassau County,” said Levy.

A discount book for ages five to 17 years is $42 for Oyster Bay Town residents and $64.00 for non-Town residents. A book for ages 18 and older is $50 for Oyster Bay Town residents and $75 for non-Town residents. In addition, ice rinks may be rented by resident groups for $300 per first hour. Nonresident groups can rent the rinks for $450 per hour.

Charters are available when public sessions are not scheduled.

All rinks may be rented by both residents and nonresident groups when skating sessions and other activities are not scheduled.

The Councilman noted that the skate shop at all rinks will be open during public sessions for renting skates at $4.00 per pair per session. Discount books for skate rentals are available.

“Most of us think of ice skating simply as fun, but it also provides a terrific aerobic workout, as well as strengthening our lower body muscles and improving our endurance, coordination, balance and flexibility, as well as giving us a healthy dose of fresh air in the process,” Councilman Macagnone commented. “Don’t let age or perceived lack of athletic ability deter you from ice skating. You’ll see people of all ages and ability levels at the rinks.
