MSG Entertainment and the Garden of Dreams Foundation are pleased to announce that legendary broadcaster and 24-time Emmy Award-winner Bob Costas has been named host of Garden of Laughs, a comedy event presented by Chase to benefit the Garden of Dreams Foundation. The special evening is set to take place on Saturday, January 26th, at The Theater at Madison Square Garden. “I am honored to host Garden of Laughs and support the significant work of the Garden of Dreams Foundation,” said Costas. “It will be a very entertaining event for an important and worthy cause. I’m truly looking forward to being at The Garden for this special night.” Costas’ experience in broadcasting runs almost the entire spectrum of sports, having covered the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, the Olympic Games, College Basketball, Horse Racing and more. A 24time Emmy Award winner, he has the additional distinction of having been nominated for an Emmy
in five different categories. He is the only person ever to win Emmys for news, sports, and entertainment. Costas has been named Sportscaster of the Year a record eight times by the National Sportswriters and Sportscaster Association. Beyond sports, Costas is well known for his interviews with people from all walks of life, especially comedians. His rapport and revealing conversations with countless comedy legends are another reason he is well suited to be part of this event. Along with Costas, Garden of Laughs, which is being Executive Produced by Emmy Awardwinner Rory Rosegarten, will feature stand-up performances by some of the biggest names in comedy including Adam Ferrara, Darrell Hammond, Robert Klein, Brian Regan, Ray Romano, and Wanda Sykes. Joining this celebrated comedic line-up will be an esteemed list of entertainment and sports icons, who will serve as presenters for this very special occasion. The evening will benefit
the Garden of Dreams Foundation, which works with all areas of The Madison Square Garden Company, including MSG Entertainment, the Knicks, the Rangers, the Liberty, MSG Networks and Fuse to make dreams come true for children facing obstacles. “As a renowned sportscaster and television’s most honored studio host, Bob Costas is a legend. We are long-time fans of his and extremely grateful that he would graciously donate his time to serve as the Master of Ceremonies for this special event,” said Rosegarten. Tickets to Garden of Laughs are on sale now and available through Ticketmaster Charge By Phone (1.866.858.0008) and all Ticketmaster outlets. Tickets are also available in person at MSG, Radio City Music Hall and the Beacon Theatre Box Offices. All net proceeds raised will help support the Garden of Dreams’ efforts to make dreams come true for children facing obstacles.

Influenza in New York State (NYS) has been widespread for the past two months and is significantly more prevalent at this time of year as compared to the past several years. To date, there have been more than 19,000 laboratory-confirmed cases reported since seasonal influenza testing began in October 2012, compared to 4,400 cases during all of the 2011-2012 influenza season. Currently, there have been 2,884 laboratory confirmed hospitalizations associated with influenza. There are 2 reported pediatric influenza-related deaths on LI. In light of the widespread influenza activity across NYS and most of the nation, the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) continues to strongly advise all New Yorkers who have not already received their influenza vaccine to do so immediately. Make sure all children are immunized. PEDIATRIC IMMEDIATE CARE PROVIDES PRESERVATIVE-FREE FLU SHOTS AND NASAL SPRAY AT AT NO COST TO ALL UNDER 19 YEARS OF AGE.
and does not cause severe symptoms often associated with influenza illness. (In clinical studies, transmission of vaccine viruses to close contacts has occurred only rarely.) Side effects can include runny nose, wheezing, headache, low grade fever, muscle aches and vomiting. Q: What else can I do to prevent getting or spreading the flu? A: Here are some things you can do: • Get vaccinated! Ask your friends to get vaccinated. • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the garbage. • Stay away from people who are sick. • Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. • If someone in the house is sick, if possible, try to keep them in a separate area. • Keep surfaces like tables, sinks, counters and toys clean by
wiping them down with a household disinfectant (follow instructions on the label). Q: If I am concerned that vaccines cause autism, what is the harm of withholding vaccines? A: Autism is also common in countries where there are no vaccines. Your child may develop severe illness which is easily vaccine - preventable. I hope this helps you to better understand what the flu is, and how you can protect yourself and your family from getting this illness. I wish you health and happiness. If I can be of further assistance, please let me know. Urszula K Rakowska, MD, FAAP, MBA, CPE Assistant Professor of Pediatric Emergency Medicine 631.864.7337 or gp@pediatricimmediatecare.com
Get Vaccinated. Vaccination is the best protection against contracting the flu. Everyone 6 months of age and older should get vaccinated against the flu as soon as the 2012-2013 season vaccine is available in your area. If you do contract the flu, talk to your doctor about antivirals. Antiviral drugs are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaler) that can be used for prevention or treatment of flu viruses. If you get sick, antiviral drugs can make your illness milder and make you feel better faster. Flu Facts: • The flu is caused by a virus called influenza • Flu is a contagious illness that is spread in droplets made by people when they talk, sneeze or cough. These droplets can then infect another person when they inhale them. • Less commonly, a person might also get flu by touching an object that has the flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or nose. • Once infected, you may pass the virus to others even about a day before you begin to have symptoms yourself. • Flu can cause a mild to severe illness and even death, especially in the very young or old, pregnant women or people with other medical illnesses (i.e.: asthma, diabetes) • The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year. Q: Who should get the flu vaccine? A: Beginning this year with the 2012-2013 influenza season, the CDC recommends that everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine each year. The single best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu vaccine each year.
Q: What types of vaccinations are available? A: The two types of flu vaccines are: • The “flu shot”: an inactivated vaccine which contains killed virus that is given by injection. It is approved for use in people 6 months of age and older, including healthy people, people with chronic medical conditions and pregnant women. • The nasal spray flu vaccine: a vaccine made with live, but weakened, flu virus that cannot cause the flu in a healthy person. This is approved for use in healthy people 2-49 years old (not pregnant). Q: What are the Side Effects of the two vaccine types? A: Different side effects can be associated with the flu shot and nasal vaccine. The flu shot: You cannot get the flu from a flu shot. Some minor side effects that could occur are: soreness, redness, or swelling at the site of injection, low-grade fever, muscle aches. If they are going to occur at all, they begin soon after the vaccination and usually last 1 to 2 days. Almost all people who receive influenza vaccine have no problems from it. The nasal spray: The nasal-spray vaccine has weakened viruses

Flipping The Switch By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There comes a time when you just have to tune things out. That point when all the chaos surrounding you simply needs to be shut off and pushed aside. The moment when all the pointless discourse and frantic commotion dissolves into simple background noise. Peace and quiet…and clarity. We all strive for this. And often, we would not find it so difficult to achieve – if not for the distraction of others. Ah, but to live a solitary life devoid of all nuisance…what kind of existence would that be? And so we must learn to tolerate, to adjust, to find that happy medium between blatant rudeness and healthy…
distance, shall we say. This is not to say we should be uninvolved in life; but sometimes, that fine line between being involved and being overtaken by nonsense is far too important to overlook. We should only become caught up in those things which are healthy and beneficial to us in the long run. Leave the rest behind. The problem is that, while, philosophically, this theory makes perfect sense, putting it into practice is far easier said than done when faced with reality. Anyone who deals with people on a daily basis, whether complete strangers or those near and dear, can surely attest to this fact. Love them or hate them, we are destined to clash with others more often than
not. It’s simple human nature. The trick is to save these so-called “battles” for the important issues. And while, in the heat of the moment, each and every issue may seem equally dire, rest assured, they are not. Take a step back, take a deep breath, and heed the following: “Frame every so-called disaster with these words: In five years, will this matter?” In most cases, the answer will be a clear and unequivocal “no.” So move on. Let it go. Forgive and forget. Don’t allow yourself to get hung up on the small stuff. In five years’ time, it won’t matter. Focus on today – and finding that elusive peace within yourself.
It’s no secret that dental work can be expensive - a basic checkup is pricey enough, but if there is a problem that requires more attention, a simple toothache can turn into a costly headache. Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be this way. Thousands of New Yorkers have already discovered the surefire solution with the EDP Dental Plan. For just $99 a year, members get the satisfaction of watching their dental bills get cut in half. In just one visit to the dentist, the plan often pays for itself! Since its inception more than 10 years ago, EDP Dental Plan has
carefully worked to build a network of more than 2,000 great providers located all over the state of New York, assuring that everyone can find a dentist they love. Best of all, members aren’t restricted by the same limitations presented by insurance - there is no waiting period, no yearly maximum, and anyone can join, regardless of age. Sign up with EDP Dental Plan today to start saving right away. With EDP’s substantial savings, you can’t afford to be without it! Adopting A Family Holiday spirit within the Levittown School District was alive as the community came together recently to collect toys, clothes and other gifts for local needy families. The district’s fourth annual Holiday Adopt-a-Family Program, again directed
by Esta Lachow and Gina Interdonato, resulted in 207 families receiving presents. “This year we had 26 more families who needed our services,” Ms. Lachow stated. “This is the result of hard times and the effects of Superstorm Sandy.”
Students, Board of Education trustees and staff gathered on December 17th at the Levittown Memorial Education Center to wrap and organize the presents before the gifts were brought to the recipients.

Orchestra Openings
The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York is inviting high-schoolaged orchestral and vocal musicians to audition for the group’s July 2013 concert tour of Central Europe. The touring MYO Orchestra and Chorus will visit and perform through Germany, Austria and Switzerland. An optional, additional week of touring will be in France. The ensembles have embarked on several international tours over the past years with
concert visits to Central and Eastern Europe, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, China, Spain, Italy, Greece and, last year, to Australia and New Zealand. John McNeur, Executive Director of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra, said, “This has proven to be a lifechanging experience for so many young people. Beyond the incredible experience of spreading goodwill through their music, the musicians have had so many opportunities
to interact with people of very different cultures. The experiences lived by the young musicians have become the inspiration for countless college essays and, of course, unbelievable memories.” Those wishing more information on the tour, including a detailed itinerary, are encouraged to visit the orchestra’s web site at www.myo.org, or call the MYO office at 516.365.MYO1 (6961).

CONGRATULATIONS - Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray applauded students who participated in the Terrific Kids Program at Wisdom Lane Middle School in Levittown. Pictured are the honorees, Ariana Rahaei, Nicholas Morales, Paige Conklin, William Torres and Patrick Carr, along with Principal John Avena, Assistant Principal Craig Arvelo-Shaw, Eleanor Walsh of the Levittown Kiwanis, and School Board President Michael Pappas.
TERRIFIC - Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray applauds students who participated in the Terrific Kids Program at Wisdom Lane Middle School in Levittown. Pictured are the honorees Nicholas Motschmann, Samantha Memoli, Jake Thomas, Joseph Natale and Holly Dukacz, along with Principal John Avena, Assistant Principal Craig Arvelo-Shaw, Eleanor Walsh of the Levittown Kiwanis and School Board President Michael Pappas.
CLARKE KIDS - W.T. Clarke Middle School Principal Stacy Breslin, left, and East Meadow Kiwanis Club President Debbie Kirsh, right, are photographed with students in grades 6-8 who were recognized as Terrific Kids for the months of September through November.
Siemens Honorees Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray honored students from throughout the township at the January 8th Town Board meeting. The students are finalists, semifinalist and regional finalists in the Siemens Westinghouse Science Competition. “We have such an extraordinary amount of talent in the Town of Hempstead and these students represent the best and brightest that our town has to offer,” said Murray. “Not only is their high level of work extraordinary, but the dedication to their elite projects are commendable.” The Town of Hempstead is very proud to honor the following students for making it to the semifinals: Devan Oodal of Garden City High School; Kyle Johnson, Thomas Keady and Samantha Preshad of South Side High School; Shovan Hasan, Kathryn Hockberg, Daphne Superville, Benjamin Kramer and Valery Zajkov of Hewlett High School; Jessica Ramos and Lee Stetson of Freeport High School. Our very own regional finalist is Evan Chernack of South Side High School. In addition, Hempstead Town is home
to three finalists: Jeremy Appelbaum, William Gil and Allen Shin of Hewlett High School. Regional finalist Evan Chernack of Rockville Centre received a $1,000 scholarship for having competed in a regional competition at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in November. His project was: “A Study of the Role of the ROCK Kinase Pathway in Dental Pulp Stem Cell Differentiation and Mineralization.” This project dealt with advanced research for clinical regenerative therapies. The finalists, Jeremy Appelbaum of Woodmere, William Gil of Valley Stream and Allen Shin of Valley Stream are teammates who competed in the finals at George Washington University in Washington D.C. The three teammates split a $100,000 scholarship with each other. Their project was, “COP1 Arrests Photomorphogenesis in Dark Grown Gametophytes of Ceratopteris Richardii; A Study of COP1 in Cryptogams.” This project examined a fern protein with potential for fighting cancer. Even more remarkable, the team did this after struggling with
the flooding effects of superstorm Sandy on their exhibit posters, which were stored in Jeremy’s basement in Woodmere. Not only were the posters ruined, but also their school was shut down for eight days because of the storm’s impact. The teammates managed to design smaller substitute posters and local school officials supported their efforts to use the school building on weekends. “The Town of Hempstead is very proud of these exceptional students,” said Murray. “I would like to congratulate the students, their families and schools for this outstanding achievement. I wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors.” There were 2,255 applicants in the competition. 322 students were named semifinalists and 93 were named regional finalists, representing 25 states. 63 students were named Semifinalists and 16 students in New York State were named Regional finalist, the largest number for any state. 15 students reside in the Town of Hempstead (3 Finalists, 1 Regional finalist and 11 Semifinalists).
CELEBRATING THE SIGN - Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray recently attended the ribbon cutting ceremony conducted in celebration of the installation of the Island Trees Public Library’s brand new lawn sign at the Stephen E. Karopcyc School on Farmedge Road in Island Trees. Eagle Scout Candidate Ryan Goepfert coordinated the production and installation as well as the landscaping.

Daddy’s Girl The East Meadow High School Theatre Guild received rave reviews for its weekend presentation of Daddy’s Girl, a comedy written by Gary Ray Stapp. The 13-member cast took the stage in three separate performances for the East Meadow community from December 13th through the 15th, drawing laughter from the play’s comedic chaos and zany characters. In “Daddy’s Girl,” the audience is introduced to Maudie’s Diner proprietor
Benard Muloovy (played by Jason Toledano), whose deceased wife Maudie (played by Rachel Steiner) takes up residence as a talking portrait on the diner’s wall. She enlists the services of an angel named Michael to reunite Benard with their long-lost daughter, Elizabeth. The chaos begins as Michael delivers two Elizabeths, and Benard must decide which woman is his daughter. During the production,
the audience is also introduced to a host of amusing individuals, including a Ph.D student with problems communicating, an elderly duo, a “motorcycle mama,” and Darlynn, a woman who has spent 25 years trying to attract Benard’s attention. Full of twists and surprises, East Meadow’s production of “Daddy’s COURT OF HONOR - Ryan Thomas Hillman of East Meadow became the 26th Girl” will be remembered Eagle Scout of Wantagh’s BSA Troop 189 on Sunday, January 6th. His Eagle Scout Court of Honor was held at the Temple B’nai Torah of Wantagh. Ryan’s brother Charles for many years to come. was awarded the converted Eagle Scout Award in 2010. At the ceremony, Hempstead Town Clerk Mark Bonilla presented a Town of Hempstead Office of the Town Clerk Citation to Ryan for his exceptional achievements while in scouting and achieving his Eagle.
RANK AWARDED - Andrew Joseph Bloniarz of Wantagh was awarded his Rank of Eagle Scout from Wantagh’s BSA Troop 656 at his Eagle Scout Court of Honor held at the Wantagh American Legion Post on Sunday, January 6th. At the ceremony, DADDY’S GIRL - A complicated cast of characters leaves Maudie’s Diner proprietor Hempstead Town Clerk Mark Bonilla presented a Town of Hempstead “Office of the Benard Muloovy (played by Jason Toledano) with the task of revealing the identification Town Clerk” Citation to Andrew for his exceptional achievements while in scouting of his long-lost daughter.
