You never know what you might find when cleaning out the closet. I recently came across a handful of those origami-type, square and triangle-folded notes that we all used to exchange like crazy back in middle school. I remember writing dozens upon dozens of them and slipping them through the vents of my friends’ lockers between classes, then excitedly waiting for them to write back so I would have my own “mail” to look forward to the next time I stopped at my own locker. How funny. It’s too bad I didn’t save them all, as I’m sure they would have made for some fascinating reading all these
years later. Notes full of class schedules, song lyrics, lists of boys we had crushes on…the usual pre-teen drama that seemed oh-soimportant at the time. We even developed our own language of sorts, with abbreviations and symbols that (so we thought) only we could comprehend. Such innocence. And then there were the “love” letters, those cute little poems surrounded by lots of hearts and x’s and o’s, and of course the requisite “A.A.F.” signifying the “always and forever” mentality that all 12 year-olds seem to have with regard to “love.” As corny as it all sounds now, there was definitely an underlying sweetness to those types of notes, a sense that somehow, with that
scrawled message of affection, everything was “official.” It’s a wonder, thinking back on it, how any of us managed to get any work done in between composing these little nuggets of wisdom – because you know they all had to be written during class time. After all, how else to make sure our friends were continuously updated on our comings and goings from the last 40 minute class! So many memories encapsulated by those little folded pieces of paper. A slice of life, preserved for all eternity on an 8-1/2 x 11-inch piece of loose-leaf paper. It doesn’t get any better than that. Can’t wait to see what other treasures my closet will uncover.

Tips For Selecting Wedding Day Flowers What would a wedding day be without flowers? The beauty and the aroma of fresh-cut flowers can create a welcoming atmosphere and complement the beauty and the style of a wedding wardrobe. Flowers are often the first things that guests see upon arriving for the ceremony, and they may even be something guests take home at the end of the night. Flowers create an air of romance, and most couples want to make flowers -- whether fresh or silk -- an integral part of their wedding day. As with any decision when planning a wedding, choosing the right flowers requires some research and a basic knowledge of which flowers will convey the message and the theme of your wedding. The number of colors, textures and combinations that can be created are so numerous that couples may feel the decision on the floral arrangements is best left to the florist. But it doesn’t take a lot of expertise to know what you want, and it is important for couples to convey their feelings to the florist. Consider these tips when choosing a florist and selecting flowers. * Experts advise that a couple start looking for a florist at least six months before the wedding, especially if the wedding will take place during the peak season of May through September. Get recommendations from friends as to which florist they used or find out if your wedding planner or banquet hall manager recommends a particular florist. Some catering halls have agreements with florists, and they work together. * Browse magazines to get ideas of what you like. You also may be able to find a florist
through an advertisement or if he or she has been featured in publications. Keep a scrapbook of the colors, types of flowers and arrangements and any other ideas that attract you so you will be able to present this information to the florist. * Establish your flower budget prior to sitting down with the florist. You should expect to pay at least 8 percent of the total wedding cost on flowers. Get an estimate on the floral arrangement and then tweak your needs according to your budget. Many florists can modify arrangements and find a middle ground with regard to cost. Selecting flowers that are in-season will result in more affordable rates than if you desire exotic or out-of-season blooms. * Once you’ve hired the florist, you can come up with a wedding flower worksheet that establishes all of your needs. Florists know how to stretch arrangements by using greenery and other filler to lend bulk without too much extra cost. *Experienced florists will know how long it takes certain buds to open and show off their maximum beauty. Therefore, expect a florist to be working on your floral arrangements as much as a week before the wedding date -- purchasing containers, cleaning flowers and waiting for certain ones to open fully. Minimize changes close to your wedding date as most things will already be started. * It is possible to make your own centerpieces or bouquets if you so desire. Simplicity will work best for the novice. Think about grouping similar-hued calla lilies together for a bridal bouquet. Hydrangea and peonies are larger flowers that can easily fill up a vessel on a table as a centerpiece. White flowers will coordinate with any color scheme and could be the easiest to mix and match. White blooms include sweet pea, rose, camellia, stephanotis, narcissus, gardenia, orchid, lily of the valley, jasmine, and gypsophila. Honeymoon How-To After the thrill of wedding festivities dies down, couples often jet off to a honeymoon retreat and begin an entirely different adventure. The honeymoon may create mixed feelings, some concerning the chance to spend time alone after months of planning and a few feelings of anxiety over spending the first night together as a married couple. For many couples, the honeymoon wedding night is the first time they are intimate together or it holds a special meaning of being intimate for the first time after being married. Such significance can put pressure on a happy and natural experience. Wedding jitters are normal, as are honeymoon and wedding night jitters.
But just as wedding trends have changed through the years, so, too, have beliefs about the wedding night. Knowing about shifting trends can alleviate some of the nervousness. According to a recent survey from Brides magazine, one in three brides plan to get into bed on the wedding night and ... sleep. After all of the hoopla of planning and enjoying the wedding, most people are exhausted. Others say they plan to stay up and relive moments of the day. Only about half of all couples think they will consummate the marriage on their wedding night. Taking the pressure off of the wedding night means that the rest of the honeymoon may be filled with opportunities to be amorous.
But couples may still be filled with expectations for the perfect romantic retreat. Here are some things to think about. Accept the fact that some wedding nights and honeymoons aren’t exactly what’s pictured in the movies. Don’t try to live up to a Hollywood-inspired ideal or you may be let down when things don’t go your way. In other words, it may rain on your beachside liaison. A wedding requires a lot of work. Many people find themselves to be physically exhausted afterward. Others find they are so wound up that they cannot relax. When the mind or body is on adrenaline overload or completely wiped out, it’s not the ideal situation for romantic endeavors.
Try to make the honeymoon stand apart from other nights by packing nice lingerie or nighttime attire so that the memories will be special. There will be plenty of other times down the road when you’re an old, married couple to hop between the sheets in a ratty college T-shirt. Pack some candles and mood music, or ask the resort to handle these details for you. These items can help set the scene. Make sure your packing list includes special toiletries and birth control methods if you’re not ready to start a family so soon after being married. The brands you prefer may be hard to acquire while at some honeymoon locations.

If the Lady Dragons continue their winning ways, another run in the playoffs could be on the horizon. Sixth-grade students at W.T. Clarke Middle School have been learning how to effectively write a biography. Through this literary unit, the students examined a variety of biographies about Mark Zuckerberg and Steve Jobs and learned about the writing form’s textual structures and features. The biography study concluded with the writing of a fellow classmate’s biography. Each student generated open-ended questions, staged an interview and wrote an article based on the
information provided by his or her subject. In each classroom, the students celebrated their work by placing their writing in the Biography Museum. The completed works were posted on the walls of each classroom and viewed by the students, much like a museum. The activity also included small-group critique sessions where students discussed how they would write their biography differently and what strategies were the most helpful to them during the writing process.

Levittown’s Division Avenue High School seniors James Reilly and Ashley Stinnett have been selected as two of 2,500 semifinalists in the 2012-2013 Coca-Cola Scholars Program. They were selected among approximately 85,000 entries for their leadership, academic achievements and potential. Both students are in the running for selection as finalists, who will then advance to the final interview stage of the award competition. In April, the National Selection Committee representing
outstanding leaders in business, government, education and the arts will invite 250 finalists to Atlanta for personal interviews. Fifty students will then be designated as National Scholars and receive awards of $20,000 for college. Tops In Geography Levittown eighth-grader Michael Finkelstein was the first-place winner in the Jonas Salk Middle School’s annual Geography Bee. He was the last standing of 25 students who endured a one-hour competition involving difficult questions and facts concerning U.S. cities, continents, world geography and culturally important places and
issues. Prior to the geography bee, the students in grades 6-8 were given a qualifying exam. The highest scorers were then selected to compete in this 15-year Salk tradition. The students lined up on the stage, much like a spelling bee, and were individually asked a question. Each student was allowed to answer
one question incorrectly without being disqualified. In the last round of the competition, the remaining contestants answered their questions in a written format, and the best of three was the winner. “Just the journey to this stage is an incredible feat,” social studies teacher Eric Rubin told the contestants.

Building on his success of attracting a new privately-financed Expo Center to the Hub, Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano today broke ground on a new state-ofart sports and recreation center in Eisenhower Park that will also serve as home to at least two youth hockey organizations, including the Long Island Gulls Amateur Hockey Association and the New York Junior Bobcats. Ferraro Brothers Ice Center at Twin Rinks, to be built without taxpayer dollars, is expected to create nearly 20 new jobs and generate an estimated $35 million in economic benefit for the local economy over the first five years of operation. County Executive Mangano stated, “This new state-of-the-art sports and recreation center is an exciting component of the Hub that will create jobs, complement Nassau’s sports-entertainment tourism plan and provide youth athletes access to world class skating facilities. I am delighted that Nassau County is able to partner with Chris and Peter Ferraro to bring this outstanding facility here. Creating this kind of sports entertainment destination will enhance our quality of life as well as create jobs and opportunities for residents.” Nassau County selected Twin Rinks at Eisenhower, LLC to construct the $15 million private-financed facility after issuing a Request-for-Proposals in June 2012. Twin Rinks
at Eisenhower, LLC is comprised of former NHL players Chris and Peter Ferraro of Ferraro Brothers Hockey, as well as Joel Friedman of Clearview Capital Management, LLC and Ronald Friedman of SilvermanAcampora, LLP. Their consultant, Richard “Big Daddy” Salgado of Coastal Advisors, was also on hand for the ground breaking of the facility. To be completed in four stages, Twin Rinks at Eisenhower Park will include Ferraro Brothers Ice Center, an 85,000 square foot world-class facility with two NHL regulation-sized rinks and one outdoor recreational hockey rink that will host skating lessons, youth player development programs, tournaments, and hockey teams for all ages and skill levels. The facility will also include one full-size turf field with soccer and lacrosse lines, a sport court with four NBA/ NCAA regulation basketball courts, a handball wall and a rollerblade and stroller path connecting the complex with the pre-existing paths that surround the Nassau County Aquatic Center. The Ferraro brothers hope the new facility will provide youth players’ opportunities never before seen on Long Island. “It is our passion to support Long Island families so that they will no longer have to be torn apart or have their family life disrupted just because a child excels in hockey and wants to try to make it to the NHL,” said Chris

Honorees will receive their awards at the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation’s Education Partner Awards Gala on March 21st. The Education Partner Award recognizes those individuals or organizations that have made a substantial impact on public education in Nassau County. A strategic education partner with local school districts since 1967, Nassau BOCES created this program to pay tribute to those who share its commitment to enabling students of all ages and abilities to achieve their maximum potential. “Through this innovative program, everyone who has ever been influenced by public education has an opportunity to show their appreciation by

Shredding The Competition
Stony Brook University is one of 600+ universities internationally to participate in “RecycleMania 2013,” which pits colleges and universities to compete for stewardship bragging rights over which institution can reduce, reuse and recycle the most waste. Over an eight-week period from February 3rd to March 30th, participating schools compete in various categories measuring the success of their recycling, waste reduction and sustainability efforts. “We are stepping up our efforts to win it all this year,” said James O’Connor, Director of Sustainability and Transportation Operations at Stony Brook University. “In order to promote recycling and waste reduction, we are offering complimentary shredding services, recycling receptacle drop off for office spring cleanings, electronics recycling and waste minimization through junk mail elimination.” In 2012, Stony Brook University reached a pinnacle of success in RecycleMania by placing 17th out of 296 entries in the competition’s
Gorilla category, which ranks universities on the total weight of bottles, cans, cardboard and recycled paper collected. This category’s ranking was the highest of any college or university in New York State. Stony Brook also placed eighth out of 67 entries in the E-Waste category for the total weight of recycled electronic waste. “We are proud of our RecycleMania 2012 success and can’t wait for this year’s competition which starts on February 3. Stony Brook continues to make substantial improvements in the field of recycling by increasing the number of receptacles, installing new signage and increasing the amount of products we recycle,” said O’Connor. The Office of Sustainability is also supporting the Project 50 Forward Managed Output Project (MOP) led by the Division of Information Technology and Procurement Office. MOP is reviewing paper usage, working to decrease the University’s carbon footprint and to develop solutions to reduce, recycle and implement output savings.
“During the past year this project saved 800,000 pages per semester simply by removing student cover pages from TLT Sinc Site printing output.” said David Ecker, Information Technology Manager. “The Library has also installed several multifunction devices that allow students to scan important library materials into their personal USB drive at no charge. Carry-On Made Easier FLU PROGRAM - NuHealth Roosevelt Health Center nurse manager, Vanessa Williams, RN, coordinated the NuHealth Flu Program, held in conjunction with State Senator Kemp Hannon at the Cradle of Aviation building in Mitchel Field. Several hundred persons were vaccinated against the influenza epidemic. The vaccines were provided at no out-of-pocket cost by the Nassau University Medical Center to any adult over the age of eighteen.
