The FYI Teacher Grant Program was open to educators who were certified teachers of grades Pre-K through 12 in a

Nassau or Suffolk County public, private or parochial school. 69 applications were received in total with 56 winners selected from 50 public schools and six private schools. Educators were eligible to receive a grant of up to $250.

Named As Finalist The Long Island Housing Partnership (LIHP) was named a Finalist in the Social Impact category in The Inaugural Long Island Imagine Awards.

The Long Island Imagine Awards was created to offer formal acknowledgement to some of Long Island’s most effective and innovative nonprofit organizations. This will be the first event of its kind on Long Island.

Winners will be announced during a gala event at the Crest Hollow Country Club on Tuesday, May 7th.

I was recently asked to deliver the keynote address for a High School Journalism Awards Luncheon & Ceremony, to be held at my alma mater, the (formerly known as) C.W. Post campus of Long Island University.

Wow. The keynote address.

Only nine years removed from college myself, and here I am expected to speak intelligently for 20 minutes to a crowd of (hopefully) eager, bright-eyed high school students about the highs and lows of the Journalism industry, the track of my career, the “war stories” of dealing with 20-something editions of a weekly newspaper and each and every piece of editorial content contained within them… a rather

daunting task.

Never the fan of public speaking, my first thought was, 20 minutes?! Of speaking in front of a crowd of complete strangers?! By myself?!

ButthenItookadeepbreathand truly considered the prospect…

Wow, what an honor to be asked.

Imagine how many Journalism students have come and gone through that program over the years… some have probably gone on to achieve amazing success in the field; others may have decided to pursue another career path entirely – all making their own distinct marks.

And then there was me, going from the staff of the Charles Street Times in high school, to the staff of the Pioneer in college, to the board of the Press Club of Long

Island…working my way from editorial assistant, to associate editor to managing editor here at South Bay – all while accumulating quite the pile of column clippings.

Sure, many have gone on to greater things – and hopefully this is just the beginning of a similarly fruitful career for me – but the most important thing, I feel, is to remember where you started from and the process by which you ultimately achieved your dreams. It all begins with family, is supplemented by schooling and finally becomes cemented with “real world” work experience. All part of the package, all part of the path to success.

Now…if only I could manage to expand that philosophy into a 20-minute keynote address!

The Seventh Annual Polish American Founders Scholarship Applications are now available. This Scholarship is offered to high school students of Polish descent residing in Nassau and Suffolk County and citizens of the United States. Applications are available upon request to students entering college in the Fall 2013.

This Scholarship was established to honor its three founders, Chester Wrobel, Doctor

Raymond Adamczak and Julian Jurus on the Thirtieth Anniversary of the museum. Today, the museum continues to serve the community with various exhibits depicting the contributions of the Poles to America and their heroic deed in the fight for freedom. In addition, there are special events and exhibits held at the museum throughout the year.

Ten professional organizers from Nassau and Suffolk counties recently donated their skills and services to the Women’s Fund of Long Island, an organization that provides social change grantmaking, job skills training, education and leadership development to women and girls.

Members of the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) group POLI, celebrated National Get Organized (GO) Month in January by organizing the Jericho executive office as well as disposing seven years of clutter. GO Month takes place each January to raise awareness of the benefits of hiring a professional organizer and getting organized.

The goal of the event was to organize every office and provide easy-to-manage storage solutions so that

staff can easily locate and work with files. Diana Soll, of Grand Solutions LLC said, “It’s amazing what can be accomplished when people come together for a great cause. When a space is organized, it not only provides easy accessibility, it generates positive energy.”

In two days, NAPO organizers reorganized: • All stationary and supply closets • The kitchen and conference room • The program and finance offices, • The director and executive director’s Office • All bookcases • The attic space In addition, NAPO organizers sorted through hundred of pounds of paper, old office equipment and furniture that had accumulated over the last seven years. Executive

Director Stacey Scarpone said, “This has been an outstanding way for us to inspire and raise staff morale with limited resources. And the idea that 10 professional women would volunteer their time and resources to an organization dedicated to serving women and girls is an amazing philanthropic model.”

In addition to the hands-on organizing, Fung Shui Consultant, Maureen Calamia provided a free consultation which included suggestions of color, furniture arrangement, and other elements which will be considered in the final phase in the near future.

Director of Operations Erica Hecht summarized it best, “The air and the energy here is different. It is inspiring!”

Volunteers Needed Family and Children’s Association is seeking volunteers for its longstanding Ombudservice Program, part of a statewide network of certified volunteers who visit nursing homes, adult homes, and assisted living facilities in Nassau County.

Ombudspersons serve as advocates for residents and their families.

If you are looking for a meaningful way to improve the quality

of life for our frail, sick and elderly neighbors who currently reside in long-term care facilities, this program is for you.

Family & Children’s is planning a training class for April. Training involves 36 hours of instruction over a 6 day period at Family & Children’s offices in Mineola.

Created by the Ward Melville Heritage Organization’s Youth Corps, Long Island students will get an opportunity to show off their abilities this spring at Stony Brook’s own version of the fabulous TV show.

Students must still be in school at the time the final awards are given in October 2013. The entry deadline is March 8th and there is a $25 entry fee.

Candidates should submit an audition DVD no longer than two (2) minutes recording their talent.

Those chosen will be asked to perform at WMHO’s Educational & Cultural Center in Stony Brook Village Center

on March 23rd before a distinguished panel of judges who will choose semi-finalists.

There will be a $1,000 cash prize awarded to the first place winner courtesy of Competition Automotive Group and a total of $25,000 in scholarships is being offered by Five Towns College.

The Metropolitan NY Porsche Club of America made a $11,000 donation to Angela’s House. The club made the donation before they started their Snowflake Rally on Sunday January 27th.

About 40 drivers and navigators gathered at the Hauppauge Palace Diner on Sunday morning for the start of the 57th Snowflake Rally. This year’s 70mile, three-hour trip took drivers from Hauppauge to Southampton along

several local roads. “It’s an awesome drive and it’s an awesome challenge,” said David Leonoff, 44, president of the Metro New York Porsche club.

“Winning it is not easy.”

Angela’s House, this donation is very important because the money raised is used to purchase equipment, supplies and other resources for children with special health care needs that are medically fragile chronically ill or living with

a life threatening illness.

Many times insurance will not cover these items and Angela’s House uses these funds to support children living at home with their parents Angela’s House is completing construction of their third home that cares for medically frail with 24 hour nursing care. This home will help to care for children that are ventilator dependent.

Chess Nuts

Students in kindergarten through fourth grade at Bellmore’s Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center and Winthrop Avenue School are honing their logic skills and problem-solving abilities and working on their sportsmanship through the game of chess.

Once a week for four weeks, during their lunchtime recess, the children learn and advance their chess skills from

local chess masters Tim Carney, Jason Luchan and Bob Sostack, all of whom are members of the Long Island Chess Nuts.

Organized by the PTA, the club, which is open to beginners as well as advanced players, allows students to learn and perfect their skills.

Each week begins with a 10-minute lesson on the rules and strategies of chess; the remaining time is used for students

to compete against one another based upon skill level.

“This is a great way to keep the students active during the winter months,” said Pamela Blumberg, C.A. Reinhard PTA member and chair of the Chess Club committee. “The kids really love it, and it allows them the opportunity to learn strategies and sportsmanship while building their character.”

Wilson “Snowflake” Bentley from Jericho, Vt., who in 1885 was the first person to photograph a single snow crystal using photomicrography.

In a sequence of steps, the students were then instructed on how to fold their paper and cut shapes to reveal a fancy snowflake.

“The students each

donated one snowflake to the Snowflake Project and decorated their classrooms with their additional snowflakes,” art teacher Jill Frank explained. “We also spoke about how wonderful it was to contribute to a cause that will make other students feel good and let them know we care.”

Levittown eighth-grader Michael Finkelstein was the first-place winner in the Jonas Salk Middle School’s annual geography bee. He was the last standing of 25 students who endured a one-hour competition involving difficult questions and facts concerning U.S. cities, continents, world geography and culturally important places and

issues.

Prior to the geography bee, the students in grades 6-8 were given a qualifying exam. The highest scorers were then selected to compete in this 15-year Salk tradition. The students lined up on the stage, much like a spelling bee, and were individually asked a question. Each student was allowed to answer one question

After the students discussed the idea that he was a “bucket filler,” they took an oath to be peacemakers like Dr. King and to be accepting of others. Using construction paper, the kindergartners cut out two hands holding

up a heart to reaffirm Dr. King’s message.

“The design reinforces the message that the students will accept others, no matter what their differences may be,” Ms. Tobin stated.

Winning Delegation

The East Meadow School District is pleased to announce that the East Meadow High School Model Congress received the Best Delegation Award during the January 15th competition at Wantagh High School.

“We are very proud of the students who arrived at this competition as a powerhouse team ready to debate the issues of the day,” co-advisor Liz McLaughlin stated.

Model Congress is a debate-style club which allows members to sharpen their oratory skills.

During competitions, the students use parliamentary procedure to debate issues such as Supreme Court decisions, domestic matters, philosophy and other topics during a forum modeled after the

U.S. Congress. During a debate, two speakers have two minutes to voice their approval for or opposition to an issue, and a general debate on the topic ensues.

There is then a move to vote on the issue being debated.

Ms. McLaughlin explained that Model Congress has grown over the course of the past several years and now boasts a strong membership. Fifty students act as foreign delegates who travel to the weekend competitions.

Ms. McLaughlin also pointed out that, although she and co-advisor Joe Byrne advise the Model Congress, the club is essentially student-run.

HONORING A LEGACY - To celebrate and honor the life and memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., fourth-graders in Phinola Baeza’s class at Bellmore’s Winthrop Avenue School participated in a peaceful celebration. The students drew and colored peace signs and encircled them with messages of peace in recognition of Dr. King. The students also discussed the negative effects of segregation and the unfairness of society during the time of the civil rights movement.

Advancing A Level

W.T. Clarke Middle School students Naman Shakrani and Nicole Artoglou are the first- and second-place winners, respectively, of the school’s 2013 Spelling Bee. Naman, who correctly spelled “philodendron,” will now advance to the regional competition of the Scripps Spelling Bee at Hofstra University.

Prior to the bee, the middle school students were tested, and 27 qualified as finalists. The intense seven-round competition lasted approximately one hour, until the winner was named.

When asked the secret to his success, Naman explained that he pictures the word in his head before spelling it. “I ask my parents and my brother to keep quizzing me,” he added. “I also ask for all of the information about the word, even if I know how to spell it already.”

Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray has announced the town’s 2013 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program schedule. VITA volunteers provide assistance to seniors and residents with limited incomes in the preparation of their federal and state income tax returns. The VITA program is sponsored by the Town of Hempstead’s Department of Senior Enrichment under the auspices of the Internal Revenue Service.

Volunteers are assigned to twenty-seven locations throughout the town, including town senior centers and local libraries.

“Our VITA Program

makes it as easy as pie for seniors to file their tax returns. This is another way in which Hempstead Town is helping meet the needs of our citizens,” said Murray.

Most VITA sites require that an appointment be made in advance.

Participants must bring last year’s tax return (2011), all wage and earning statements (W2 and 1099), all interest dividend and pension statements, 2012 property tax receipts, STAR exemption records, itemized expense records, and social security cards and photo identification of all those filing tax returns.

“We have a dedicated

group of VITA volunteers poised to provide competent service to seniors and residents with limited incomes during the upcoming tax season.

I hope that any senior resident who is interested in having his or her tax return prepared will come to a local VITA site and take advantage of this excellent, free service,” concluded Murray.

New President Named

Marc DiSciullo, MD has been installed as president of The Friends of Mercy Medical Center for 2013.

The long-time Muttontown resident accepted a small bust of Theodore Roosevelt that signifies leadership of the organization in a January 22nd ceremony at Frank’s Steak’s in Rockville

Centre.

Dr. DiSciullo is president of the Rockville Anesthesia Group and immediate past president of Mercy’s Medical Staff, of which he has been a member since 1993.

He joined The Friends of Mercy in 2006, has been a member of the

organization’s executive board since 2010, and with his wife, Gloria, has twice chaired The Mercy Ball, in 2008 and 2009. At The Mercy Ball this past December, he was honored with the Theodore Roosevelt Award For Outstanding Service.

Mentoring Intel Finalists Stony Brook University faculty have mentored four of the 40 high school students chosen as finalists in the prestigious 2013 Intel Science Talent Search which accounts for 10 percent of the 40 finalists announced by Intel. All four finalists participated in the Simons Summer Research Program at Stony Brook University where they worked in Stony Brook University labs with Stony Brook faculty members and graduate students.

Two finalists hail from Long Island, one is from California and another from Oregon.

“Stony Brook University consistently mentors and develops some of the top high school research talent in the nation,” said Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, President, Stony Brook University. “I congratulate the four finalists on this great accomplishment; and I tip my hat to the faculty and graduate students that selflessly give of their time to take these young researchers under their wings teaching them how to do research properly. Mayuri Sridhar, Kings Park HS, Kings Park, New York, worked with Dr. Carlos Simmerling in the Department of Chemistry on Computational Analysis of the DNA-Binding Mechanism of the p53 Tumor Suppressor and its Inactivation through the

Raghav Tripathi, Westview HS, Portland, Oregon, worked with Dr. Iwao Ojima in the Department of Chemistry and Director of the Institute of Chemical Biology and Drug Discovery on Design and Synthesis of Novel Fatty Acid Binding Protein Inhibitors for Analgesic and Anti-Inflammatory Effects through Increases in Endogenous Anandamide Concentrations. (Tripathi also placed sixth overall in the 2012 Siemens competition finals.)

Assanis, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. “I would also like to thank the faculty mentors in our Simons Summer Research Program who worked with four out of 40, or 10 percent, of this year’s Intel finalists.”

In early January, it was announced that 35 of the 300 Intel semifinalists nationwide (27 of 53 from Long Island) were mentored at Stony Brook University, bringing the total to 393 semifinalists mentored by Stony Brook faculty members since 1997. Additionally, 47 Intel finalists have been mentored at Stony Brook since 1997.

These four finalists will head to Washington D.C. on March 7 for a week-long event where they will have an opportunity to compete for a share of $630,000 in awards, with the top winner receiving $100,000 from the Intel Foundation.

Students will undergo a rigorous judging process and meet with national leaders. Top winners will be announced at a blacktie gala awards ceremony at the National Building Museum on March 12th.

In the 2012 Intel Science Talent Search, the overall grand prize winner Nithin Tumma, a recipient of a $100,000 scholarship, was mentored at Stony Brook University by Dr. Berhane Ghebrehiwet, a Professor of Medicine and Pathology in the Stony Brook University School of Medicine. Stony Brook mentors have had tremendous success in guiding students to successful outcomes in high school science competitions. In addition to mentoring a number of semifinalists and finalists in both the Intel and Siemens competitions, Dr. Iwao Ojima, Distinguished Professor in the Department of Chemistry, mentored Janelle Schlossberger and Amanda Marinoff, the grand prize winners (team category) in the 2007 Siemens competition; and Dr. Carlos Simmerling, Department of Chemistry, mentored Ruoyi Jiang, the individual grand prize winner in the 2009 Siemens competition.

There’s good news for those concerned about cholesterol and their health. They may have a new way to regulate their cholesterol level that doesn’t involve prescription drugs.

Cholesterol is a naturally occurring substance in the human body. It is used to make many of our hormones, vitamin D and bile acids, which aid fat digestion and keep cell membranes intact. How much you have is based on a combination of genetics and lifestyle.

However, too much LDL cholesterol—often referred to as “bad cholesterol”—can slowly build and contribute to heart disease and clogged arteries. Some will try to manage their cholesterol with diet and exercise while others will turn to prescription medications.

A New Approach

One of the latest approaches to managing cholesterol involves taking a nutritional supplement. One such supplement, called Sytrinol, is described as a safe, effective cholesteroland triglyceride-lowering nutrient that is designed to begin working in 30 days.

The supplement is made up of a blend of powerful antioxidants including polymethoxylated flavones (PMFs) and a range of palm (alpha, delta and gamma) tocotrienols.

According to a published clinical study, Sytrinol was able to significantly lower total cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides. The formula is also said to increase HDL levels. This is often referred to as the “good cholesterol” because of the way it transports LDL cholesterol away from the heart and back into the bloodstream.
