Among those on hand to participate were: the Fitzpatrick family, the Colon family, the Partap family, the Schwenk family and the Torres family. Dental Visit

First grade and DLC students at Summit Lane have been learning all about dental health and hygiene! The students have been engaged in various science activities connected to dental health and career awareness: reading books about teeth, watching videos, making related projects and

writing about losing their teeth. As a culmination to this science unit, students enjoyed an informative visit to Summit Lane by dentist Dr. Dave Krinsky, brother of Summit Lane staff member Carol Morris and dental hygienist Ms. Julie, Dr. Dave’s daughter. What a great opportunity

to learn first-hand what a dentist does and how to keep your teeth healthy. After a question and answer session with Dr. Dave and Ms. Julie, students returned to their classroom to write in their journals about the special guests and shared the entries and illustrations with their classmates.

Spring Fever By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Spring has sprung. That’s it. I’ve decided. One sunny day amid a week of snow and sleet and rain, and it’s official. Enough of this winter wonderland nonsense. Funny, since we have really only had one substantial snowstorm over the course of the last three or so winters; but the one was… well, quite a storm, shall we say. And just like that, all the relatively pleasant winters of the past few years have been forgotten – wiped out from the collective memory. Isn’t that always the way? One season gives way to the

next – and we, as a society, go from complaining about the cold, to whining about the spring rain, to being exhausted by the oppressive heat…and then, oh no, here comes that autumn chill again! One endless cycle of wishing for something other than what we have, only to promptly wish it away as soon as it’s within our grasp. We are a flaky bunch, aren’t we? And to think other societies would give anything to live in a temperate climate such as ours, complete with four seasons – and the occasional natural disaster of course. Seriously, in the last year or

two, we’ve experienced two substantial hurricanes, a blizzard of epic proportions, a minor earthquake…am I forgetting anything else? Dare we ask – what next? Well, what’s next for me is spring. Beautiful, mild, clear and crisp. Spring. My favorite season, when the summer is still looming, everything is blooming and the days take on a renewed, vital energy that has been missing throughout the long winter of hibernation and doldrums. Sure, it may officially be a month or so away – but the mentality is here now. Embrace it.

Meet & Greet Kickoff Calling all aspiring writers and authors! Meet and mingle with members of LIAWS (Long Island Authors and Writers Society www.LIAWS. org). Members include award-winning authors, bestselling authors, industry professionals and those new to writing. Anyone interested in writing or authors interested in furthering their craft are welcome to stop by and say hello. The newly formed Long Island Authors and Writers Society is holding the open invitation networking event for current members and those wishing to join LIAWS. It will be held on Wednesday, March 20th, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Melville Marriot, 1350 Walt Whitman Road in Melville. “This is one of the many social events we are planning for LIAWS,” says LIAWS president Tom Gahan. “The writing process can be frustrating. It’s often difficult for writers to meet those in the business face to face. Formal meetings can also make open conversation difficult. We’re here to support all levels of the written word in fiction and non-fiction.” The March 20th event is free and open to all. Attendance is not necessary
