Joining The Fight The New York Islanders are partnering with The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) for the second straight season with the goal of raising funds and awareness for the organization. The event will take place on Thursday, March 7th, when the team takes on the New York Rangers at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum at 7 p.m. For each ticket sold, $2 will go directly to the NCMEC. Islanders Owner Charles Wang has generously committed to personally matching the total from the $2 ticket donation, 50/50 raffle and ChuckA-Puck. Co-founder of NCMEC and host of America’s Most Wanted, John Walsh will attend the game and drop the ceremonial puck. During the March 7th game, the Islanders will hold a variety of fundraising activities, such as the Chuck-A-Puck intermission contest and the 50/50 raffle. Collection tables will line the

concourse level to accept donations. Fans can also text SAFEKIDS to 20222 to make a $10 donation. “Children are the future of our country and no matter who you are or where you’re from, we all have the responsibility to protect them,” Walsh said. “We are forever grateful to Charles Wang and the New York Islanders for sharing our commitment. Last season’s event at the Islanders game was a huge success in raising awareness and funds for NCMEC. I plan on putting my undefeated record on the line and seeing another big Islanders victory, both on and off the ice.” The mission of NCMEC is to combat the issue of missing and sexually exploited children and the significance of this should not be lost. An estimated 800,000 children are reported missing each year and children are sexually victimized every day with most of these children never disclosing the abuse to anyone. Clearly, this is a growing issue that needs

additional attention. “It is crucial that we do everything possible to make sure our children are safe,” Islanders Owner Charles Wang said. “The fans who came and supported The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children last season were incredible. The donations that were received and the awareness that was raised have gone a long way towards ensuring our children, our future, remain the most important treasure in our lives. I look forward to supporting this important organization in front of a sold out Nassau Coliseum crowd.” NCMEC mascot, “Clicky,” will join Islanders mascot Sparky the Dragon for the entire game. The two characters will help staff members collect donations and distribute safety information on the concourse. To generate added awareness, the center-ice video board will run numerous facts and public service announcements throughout the evening.

So You Think You May Have Hearing Loss?

Americans love their electronics, smart phones, tablet computers, digital cameras, HDTV’s, e-book readers, MP3 players, and hearing aids (oops, those words ‘hearing aids’ are old, lets re-name them). That’s right – new, sleek, state-of-the-art, life-altering hearing instruments (that’s better). As contoured and futuristic as the most highly styled electronic device – or so discreet that they are virtually invisible – today’s hearing instruments are the high-tech “anti-aging” tool that can help keep lifelong Gen-Xers and baby boomers socially, cognitively and physically active. At its best, technology offers solutions, enriches life, and makes us more efficient. Today’s modern hearing instruments do all three. For more than 34 million Americans hearing loss is part of life. Most frequently, it results from repeat exposure to loud noises – at concerts, nightclubs, sporting events, crowded restaurants, loud workplaces and so on. In many ways, hearing loss is the unintended by-product of life fully lived—that is, before we knew better about how to protect our hearing in such noisy environments. But when ignored and left unaddressed, hearing loss robs from life. It isolates, it debilitates, and it diminishes quality of life and it even takes a toll on financial well being, by cutting into earnings potential. Perhaps, most notable, unaddressed hearing loss creates barriers and unnecessarily strains even the best of relationships. But listen up now! It doesn’t have to, and it shouldn’t. The overwhelming majority of people with hearing loss can benefit from hearing instruments. Eight out of ten hearing instrument users say they are satisfied with the changes that have occurred in their lives, specifically, due to their hearing instruments – from how they feel about themselves to the positive effects hearing instruments

have on their social and work lives. High-performance technology and style have merged with durability and ease-of-use when it comes to today’s hearing instruments. The options are so varied, in fact, that there is an attractive solution for just about anyone; today’s high-tech hearing aids can be discreet or as visible as you like. Top designer’s offer styles that appeal to the fashion conscious, the trendsetter, partygoer, the intellectual, or sports enthusiast. Now designer styles and colors can make the average guy who is tired of arguing with his wife and kids about the volume on the TV feel more comfortable and confident wearing hearing instruments. Simply put, today’s hearing instruments transcend the old-world notion about hiding a condition as common as hearing loss. Whether they sit discreetly unnoticeable inside your ear canal, or wrap aesthetically around the contour of your outer ear like the latest fashion accessory, today’s high-performance hearing instruments selectively amplify life. They do unabashedly send the message: “I’m too young and full of life to stop doing the things I love best.” If you think you or someone you care about is struggling with unaddressed hearing loss ask yourself, or them, these questions: • Do you seem to have trouble hearing on the telephone? • Is it more difficult for you to follow conversations when two or more people are talking at the same time? • Do you keep turning up the TV or radio? • Do you sometimes miss a telephone ring or doorbell? • Do you seem more irritated or tired at big family or social gatherings?

If the answer to some or all of these questions is yes, it’s time to take that first step toward regaining the reins on life. Make an appointment with a hearing health professional, take a hearing test, and take charge of your hearing loss. So go ahead, be an innovator, disrupt your life for the better, and get that one consumer electronic that’s sure to amplify your life. Get a hearing instrument! Then hear how dynamic technology and the world around you… can be. Call 1.800.698.5200 and ask for a free booklet on Hearing Loss and how Hearing Instruments may be your answer. You can also log onto the Better Hearing Institutes website at www.betterhearing.org. professors. And I survived. What’s the big deal, you ask? Given that my profession consists mainly of the written word, the spoken word has always presented a bit of a problem for me. It’s not so much a weak point as a giant source of anxiety. Give me something to read, and I’m probably going to race through it and a relatively low volume, barely glancing up. All words will be pronounced correctly, with proper inflection and expression, but it will be over before you know it – and there had better be a powerful microphone handy. Ask me to ad lib and simply speak off the top of my head in front of a group of people – be it 3 or 3,000 – and, well, let’s just say most people know not to even ask. Granted, I have gotten much better at this. Back in high school, I used to dread the words “Oral

toss the notecards and “wing it” went awry. Suddenly, I would lose all track of what I was saying, where I was going with my “point” (more like tangent) and how on earth to get back on track. Of course, seeing dozens of your fellow classmates staring blankly back at you never helped the situation either. Being a Journalism major in college, I’m sure you can all imagine how thrilled I was to learn that public speaking would be a large part of the curriculum. There was even an entire Oral Communication course I was required to take…what luck! All joking aside, I did learn to slow it down a bit, enunciate, project, make eye contact (well, occasionally anyway) and – dare I say it – even to ad lib a bit from time to time. Not too much. Just enough.

Jamie? Do you need gum or a mint or something? You look like you’re going to be sick…” just prior to my getting ready to go on stage seemed fresh. But that was almost thirteen years ago. A lot has changed. People grow. They overcome their fears. Those once-impossible tasks seem suddenly attainable. In fact, that was the overall reaction of the high school students to my keynote address – Wow, we can do this too. She was just like us, and look what she’s achieved… The dream can become a reality. That, I think, was the greatest compliment anyone could hope to receive. If, by getting over my fear of public speaking and being able to convey my message, I was able to influence even one high school student to pursue his/her dream of becoming a journalist… well, that’s the biggest reward of all.

Last year, in three hours, a record 350 volunteers filled a 42 foot long barge six feet deep with shoreline trash. Volunteer Captain Joseph Pignataro reported that his crew hauled back a bathtub, half a boat, a broken jet ski, a lot of

lumber, tires and at least 50 bags of trash. This year the amount to be picked up is even more staggering. Since Sandy, Operation SPLASH boats have seen the devastation first hand, and have already started the clean-up process, removing large lumber, pilings, propane tanks, damaged docks and dock Styrofoam - all from just the local waterways. The amount of debris resting on our bay islands for this year’s clean-up, OpSPLASH23, will be more of a challenge, and greater assistance is welcome.

“The bad news is that Super Storm Sandy has undone most of the great work our volunteers have done over the last 22 years,” said Rob Weltner, President of Operation SPLASH. He continued, “The good news is, we Long Islanders love our bays and beaches and will rise to the challenge before us, and make them pristine again.” To volunteer, please gather at the old Freeport Museum, 202 Woodcleft Avenue in Freeport at 9 a.m. on March 16th (rain date March 17th). Volunteers should dress

for the weather of the day. Waterproof boots and work gloves are strongly suggested. For safety reasons, no sneakers are allowed. Children must be at least 12 years old to participate and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. To make a tax-deductable donation to Operation SPLASH, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, please visit www. OperationSPLASH.org or send a check to PO Box 228, Freeport, NY 11520 or call 516.378.4770.

Understanding Small Loans (NAPSI)—For many, the answer to a financial dilemma can come from asking the right questions. To help, a public interest organization has come up with four quarterly booklets, with worksheets and self-assessment information, for those considering personal loans. The first, “Understanding Personal Loans,” helps potential borrowers find answers to six important questions:

• Is a personal loan for me? • Can I afford a loan? • What happens when I apply? • What happens if I’m late with a payment? • What terms should I understand before taking out a loan? • Which laws protect me? This financial literacy initiative that aims to educate the more than 30 million underbanked households in the U.S.

Creative Expressions When I Can’t Sleep... The Gallery

Featuring Poetry And Photos Submitted By Our Readers!

By: Robert L. Macchia, West Babylon Thoughts racing through my mind, Sometimes keep me awake at night, So I get dressed in the wee hours, And go for a walk carrying a flashlight…

The dark streets can be dangerous, But exercise is good for the body and soul, There is not much activity because of the time, Exercise is invigorating especially when it is cold… My wife tells me how dangerous it can be, So I try to avoid walking in the wee hours, But when I can’t sleep the exercise is great, It gives me strength and power… A body that is inactive is not good for the mind and soul, As we age we must remain active and not become lazy, The aches and pains always disappear when I exercise, My mind avoids “oldtimers” and becomes sharp and not hazy…

Rebirth By: Andrew Kessler, Massapequa We refuse to love others See our flaws within them In the mirror these same traits we admire Shatter the reflection Sweep away the broken deception In front of you a blank canvas Take a brush, imagine your reborn soul With each stroke, create the life you wish to live Embrace this new world Gone the scars of yesteryear Welcome to paradise naive virgin How does it feel to truly live and love again?

Eye Donor Awareness Programs In recognition of National Eye Donor Awareness Month in March, the Lions Eye Bank for Long Island is offering free educational programs throughout the month at several North Shore-LIJ Health System facilities. This year marks the 30th annual National Eye Donor Month. In 2011, there were 46,196 corneal transplants done in the US, according to the Eye Bank Association of America. The Lions Eye Bank for Long Island has provided the gift of sight to more than 12,000 corneal transplant recipients since its inception in 1986. Corneal transplants are not only critical to people’s sight but they are also used for research and education. “This month offers a great opportunity for everyone to realize the power they have to one day benefit others through cornea or whole eye donation,” said Kenneth Manger, director of the Lions Eye Bank for Long Island, located at Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream. “Talk to your family and friends so they are aware

of your wishes and enroll in the New York State Donate Life Organ, Tissue and Eye Donor Registry. You can sign up when you renew your driver’s license or by visiting our website at www.lebli.org. Your corneas could one day provide the gift of sight to individuals who would otherwise be unable to see.” Healthcare professionals and informational displays will be available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the lobbies of the following locations: · March 7th: Southside Hospital, 301 East Main Street, Bay Shore. · March 7th: Plainview Hospital, 888 Old Country Road, Plainview. · March 8th: Franklin Hospital, 900 Franklin Avenue, Valley Stream. · March 15th: North Shore University Hospital, 300 Community Drive, Manhasset. · March 22nd: Nassau University Medical Center, 2201 Hempstead Turnpike, East Meadow. · March 25th: Forest Hills Hospital, 102-01 66th Road, Forest Hills.

The Lions Eye Bank is sponsored by the Lions Clubs International, the largest service organization in the world. The Lions are known internationally for their work fighting blindness and diabetes. Lions Club members in this area raise money for the Lions Eye Bank and donate their time transporting the sight-restoring tissue to and from local airports, surgery centers and the Lions Eye Bank’s lab. For information, contact the Lions Eye Bank at 516.256.6990 or visit their website at www.lebli.org.

Peers Pair Up

Third- through fifthgrade students at Charles Campagne Elementary School in the Bethpage School District were visited by high school student leaders as part of the district’s Anti-Bully Week activities.

More than 30 members of the high school’s student government and SADD club volunteered to train for the anti-bully workshop and then presented it to the elementary students. The presentation included videos and interactive

discussion on the ideas of tolerance, acceptance and being an upstander. High school students also visited Central Boulevard School and JFK Middle School students presented the workshop at Kramer Lane.

Can’t Take It Back

As part of the Bethpage School District’s Anti-Bully Week program, Kramer Lane Elementary School students participated in many activities and held anti-bully-themed days during the week of February 19th. One of the days,

designated as Can’t Take It Back Day, focused on teaching students that once they say or do something unkind, it is difficult to take it back. The day also incorporated messages of kind people always “having your back” and looking out for you. To express

the ideas discussed in class, students were asked to wear their clothing to school backwards. Some first-graders are pictured in front of their “Don’t be a bully, be a smart fish” activities, which focused on not taking the bait of a bully.

On February 25th, Central Boulevard Elementary School students in the Bethpage School District embarked on a monthlong “Journey Through Books.” The school’s Parents as Reading Partners committee held a special kickoff, complete with a bagpipe greeting from Bethpage High School Assistant Principal Kevin Healy. The design of the

program is for students and their parents or guardians to make a commitment, with a reading contract, to log and read at least 15 minutes each night throughout the duration of the program. The “journey” will include student-led morning announcements with greetings in 24 different languages, a brand-new book for each student, a Books On The Move grocery bag

decorating contest, Hat’s Off to Reading Day, Travel Tee-Shirt Day, Guest Community Reader Day, Poem in Your Pocket Day, incentives to visit the Bethpage Public Library and prizes for minutes read, as well as Central Boulevard Principal Steven Furrey’s schoolwide challenge to read 250,000 minutes.

Journey Through Books

Powerful Message

Ninth-grade students at Bethpage High School participated in a special workshop featuring Paul D. Failla, a retired Suffolk County police officer and educational consultant. Mr. Failla, delivered powerful and poignant messages of anti-bullying, leadership and respect to the students in a workshop held during

the district’s Anti-Bully Awareness Week. Over a span of three periods, ninth-graders listened intently during Mr. Failla’s presentation. He used humor and drama to captivate his audience while presenting examples of societal prejudices and destructive decisions, as well as the

harmful consequences of each from real stories and circumstances. His greatest emphasis to the students was placed on values. All of the students were so taken with his message, that many have written him letters of gratitude for sharing his expertise.

Naturally Lowering Cholesterol (NAPSI)—If living a healthier life is your cup of tea, you may be interested in an easy way to improve your health—using the natural antioxidant powers of tea. Almost half of all Americans are overweight and have dangerously high levels of cholesterol.

Heart attacks are still the No. 1 killer in the U.S. The problem is that high cholesterol and your risk may be greater than you think. According to American Heart Association guidelines, the acceptable level of “bad cholesterol” is 30 percent lower than

it used to be only a few years ago. This means that millions of Americans, including those who never dreamed they were at risk, now are. Fortunately, there are natural, nonprescription alternatives for lowering cholesterol. For example, heart-healthy products

such as TeaFlavin, an all-natural, caffeine-free capsule made from tea extract, contain as much cholesterol-fighting power as 35 cups of green tea. For more information on TeaFlavin, visit www. teaflavin.com or call (800) 876-4332.
