embers of the Wisdom Lane Middle School Builder’s Club in the Levittown School District took part in a program to promote reading. The club members visited Northside Elementary School in the district and read picture books to the kindergarten classes. Afterwards, the kindergartners answered questions about the stories they had heard and received prizes. All the young children received bookmarks personally decorated by the club members.

The more I drive, the more I realize how many truly incompetent motorists there are out there. Let’s start with the basics. If you come out to find snow accumulated on the roof of your car, CLEAN IT OFF. Those of us who have the misfortune of driving behind you would greatly appreciate it. I know you think you’re saving time, but honestly, they make rear windows transparent for a reason…you know, just in case you want to take a quick peek back there every now and then. Once on the road, let’s review a few pointers… Shoulders of the road were made for the purpose of easing into and out of traffic while merging. Trust me, it’s a much better alternative than

recent years. Little League Softball has over 360,000 players worldwide and is played in nearly all U.S. states. Each summer, Little League International operates four World Series tournaments for softball, in which world champions in the divisions of Little League (ages 11-12), Junior League (12-14), Senior League (1316) and Big League Softball (14-18) are crowned. Each of the championship games in those tournaments are televised on ESPN or ESPN2. For more information on Little League Softball Day, contact Al Sciangula, Head Coach- St. Joseph’s Softball (asciangula@sjcny.edu) or Tanya Interrante, Asst. Director of Softball- North Babylon Youth League (nbylsoftball.@yahoo.com). Little League Baseball and Softball is the world’s largest organized youth sports program, with nearly 2.7 million players and one million adult volunteers in every U.S. state and scores of other countries.
practically standing on your brakes while in the right traffic lane as you suddenly realize your exit is approaching – oh, in 3 feet or so. Same goes for merging onto a major highway or parkway. Do not assume that the lane is clear for you to simply sail right through at 60 mph. There are occasionally, you know, other vehicles already inhabiting that space. Then there are those scenarios that are simply so bizarre, they are beyond words. A few weeks ago, I was stopped at a light on the Service Road of the LIE. As I waited in the left hand turning lane, a truck opposite me in the right hand lane, I noticed a car approach in the middle lane, “driven” by a man staring intently at the map spread across his steering wheel. Suddenly, he apparently
decided that he needed to be somewhere else, and proceeded to back up on the Service Road and cut his wheel, angling his car toward this aforementioned truck in the right lane…all the while, never shifting his gaze from the map. With a mix of horror and amusement, I watched the scene unfold. I glanced at the truck driver, to see him absolutely hysterical with laughter, shaking his head in amazement. The light turned green at that point, spurring me to get out of there before witnessing Act II of this particular play. No telling what the next move might have been! Let’s all focus people. And not on our maps, please. The road. Only the road. And for goodness sake, invest in a snowbrush.

to attend the game. The players will come dressed in their Little League uniform jerseys, and following the game will be permitted on to the field to meet the collegiate players and coaches. “As a way of recognizing Little League Softball, and in appreciation of the college softball experience, Little League International is reaching out to communities by having Little League Softball Days,” Stephen D. Keener, president and chief executive officer of Little League Baseball and Softball, said. “For the seventh straight year, this initiative will afford young athletes of all ages the chance to enjoy the game of softball at its finest. They will have the complete game experience from the warmups to game’s end.” Colleges and universities throughout the United States, including the University of Washington; UCLA; the University of Arizona; the University of Tennessee; and the University of Michigan, have hosted similar events in

Levittown’s Summit Lane Elementary School students in Bridget Maniscalco’s fourth-grade class studied the history and culture of the Native Americans of New York. As part of their research, each student created a trifold presentation on facts they had learned about the Iroquois of New York. In conjunction with this project, the students read Eagle Song by Joseph Bruchac. They each created their own Tree of Peace, which illustrated how they could bring about peace in their own daily lives. Kind Words Kind words do not cost much. They never blister the tongue or lips. They make other people goodnatured. They also produce their own image on men’s souls, and a beautiful image it is. Blaise Pascal

VALENTINES FOR VETS - Hempstead Town Councilwoman Angie M. Cullin congratulated the pupils who participated in the Valentines for Vets program at the Forest Lake Elementary School located at 3100 Beltagh Avenue in Wantagh. Through this program, which the Town instituted in 2001, students create valentines to send to veterans at local VA hospitals. Many of these men and women don’t have families and it means a lot to them to know that the young children appreciate them for the sacrifices they made for our nation. Pictured also with the students are Teachers Susan Burdick and Colleen Nicolosi.

My babies are growing up What they used to love me doing Is just embarrassing now My little boy walks down the hall From a distance, all I see is his back Then suddenly, he turns to see if I’m still there And gives me a wave My heart melts ‘Cause his big sisters They don’t look back anymore She doesn’t look back I guess it’s okay It means she’s growing up In every sense of the way Sometimes those moments get lost Day to day But when my little guy looked back It reminded me of so many yesterdays I drop her off to her hourly job She tells me not to stop in front It’s too embarrassing Getting a lift from my mom She scurries in through the door She doesn’t look back anymore My baby is getting ready to dance Her tutu and make-up on I used to walk her backstage And she’d glance and I’d give her a wink You’re going to do great Don’t be scared Just look straight ahead Don’t look at the floor Now, she doesn’t look back anymore They say you have to let go Cut those apron strings
No one told me the pain that would bring ‘Cause she doesn’t look back anymore She packed her bags And we flew and flew A thousand miles later We were at her new school I tried to be strong And decorated her dorm I knew soon It wouldn’t be long To say our goodbyes I didn’t want to ruin her excitement Being on her own for the first time I put on my shades To hide my tears I could feel her stare As I drove away The pain is too great Nothing will be the same as before I’ve had to learn To not look back anymore Hold on to those moments When their sweet little eyes Search for you in a crowd

One day as I was walking with my cane And time for me to go I glanced up And behind the curtain I could see those big brown eyes She was looking back To make sure I was okay Saying a silent prayer That I’d make it home safe on my way My baby looked back today

February 8th was National Girl Scout Cookie Day, and Levittown’s Division Avenue High School had a particularly sweet reason to rejoice. Junior Kaitlyn Genari was chosen to be a representative for the Girl Scouts of America Thanksa-lot cookie campaign and has been through a whirlwind of media experiences that some young Scouts can only dream of. National Girl Scout Cookie Day celebrates the world’s largest girl-run business. The real purpose of the $790 million cookie program is to teach girls the five essential skills of goal setting, decision-making, money management, business ethics and people skills. Last year Kaitlyn attended the Girl Scout National Convention as a delegate, and this fall, she attended a leadership workshop for Girl Scout ambassadors and adult volunteers that promoted the “good word” about scouting. Through her leadership and decorative
skills, she became one of four Scouts who now grace the package of this year’s “Thanks-a-lot” cookies, which are shortbread dipped in rich fudge and topped with an embossed “thank you” message in one of five languages. Kaitlyn and her sister Scouts created and produced a video for YouTube advertising the Thanks-a-lot brand in which they rap and dance to promote this year’s cookie drive. “They’re Yummy and You Know It” has become a regional and national favorite, and the entire Division Avenue family congratulates Kaitlyn on her recognition for community service through GSA to support entrepreneurial aspirations for girls everywhere!
