By: Jamie Lynn Ryan This holiday season, it seems especially appropriate to reflect on those things we are thankful for, individually and collectively. Considering all that most of us have been through – and continue to go through – over the last month, I believe most of us have found a new appreciation for those things formerly taken for granted. For one, if you are fortunate enough to spend this Thanksgiving holiday with your family, friends and loved ones, consider yourself ahead of the game. Sure, you may have to forgo the traditional turkey dinner at home, but was the holiday ever truly about the food to begin with?

Perhaps, for some. Food, coupled with football and Black Friday shopping, right? Well this year, it is about something else, something far more important to the big picture. Togetherness. Compassion. Charity. That sense of fulfillment that only comes from these qualities… if only it didn’t take natural disasters and national tragedies to bring this sort of behavior out. I suppose the better part of human nature is always there, just below the surface, pushed aside by the daily monotony of life’s obligations. But to see it on display… that’s something the likes of which we don’t witness nearly often enough. This Thanksgiving – and

Christmas, while we’re at it – the emphasis should be on the people we choose to celebrate with. The rest is material – the food, the gifts, the decorations – and can be modified on the fly. But the people… they cannot be replaced. We have all lost a lot over this last month; at the very least, a sense of security and complacency. Maybe this isn’t a bad thing. Perhaps it is a reminder that we should never take things for granted, and should always be moving forward. You simply never know when things will come to a grinding standstill. Let’s all enjoy the moments and the memories this holiday season. Absorb each and every one and savor them. Happy Thanksgiving.

Students, staff, administrators and members of the community recently gathered at W.T. Clarke and East Meadow high schools for their annual h o m e c o m i n g celebrations. To kick off each weekend, students at the schools decorated building hallways with spirit posters and streamers to showcase school pride. At W.T. Clarke High School, students gathered in the gymnasium for a pep rally the afternoon prior to the homecoming football game to ignite Ram spirit. Spirit was also on full display at East Meadow

High School where students proudly wore their school colors. Spurred on by their cheerleaders, the W.T. Clarke Rams took on Mineola in their homecoming game. During halftime, the homecoming parade made its way onto the field, led by the W.T. Clarke High School Marching Band and Color Guard. Local politicians, district administrators and members of the Board of Education accompanied the colorful class floats onto the field, each decorated with the theme of “video game apps.” Recognized during the

Other members of the homecoming court included: Duke and Duchess Aaron Dawson and Ava Goncalves, Count and Countess Tristan Nagel and Taylor Rosenking, and Prince and Princess Fabio Rivera and Alexandra Stokum. Throughout game time, participants mingled in front of a variety of booths and caught up on news about the new school year. The crowd was delighted with a Ram home victory by a score of 27-13. For East Meadow High School’s homecoming celebration, the school hosted a parade down Carman Avenue which included floats with the theme “superheroes.” In addition, members of the homecoming court, cheerleaders and the marching band entertained the crowd. During the halftime celebration, the community enjoyed performances by the cheerleaders, the Rockettes and the Jets Marching Band. Seniors David Carey and Danielle Jean were crowned homecoming king and queen and members of the court were announced and congratulated by the administration. The homecoming court included Dennis Caramante, Emily Fitzsimmons, Julian Paykert, Michael Petti, Carly Salzman, Megan Spindell, and Jaclyn Tortora. LEADING THE WAY - Members of the Seaford High School Marching Band prepare to march in the Seaford High School Homecoming Parade, which stepped off from the Seaford Library parking lot.

During lunch, students at Salk Middle School in the Levittown School District left their comfort zones and socialized with unfamiliar peers during Mix It Up At Lunch Day. Students nationwide have identified the cafeteria as a place where social divisions are most clearly drawn. Mix It Up At Lunch Day encourages students to identify, question and cross social boundaries and connect with a new friend over STRIKE UP THE BAND - Members of the Seaford Manor Elementary School lunch. Marching Band prepare to march in the Seaford High School Homecoming Parade, Guidance chair and Mix which stepped off from the Seaford Library parking lot. It Up advisor Maura

O’Sullivan explained that many students never take the time to introduce themselves to others who eat at the same table and are most likely to remain within their own social circle. “This activity is designed to take students out of their comfort zones and have them meet other students,” she stated. During Mix It Up At Lunch Day, students were assigned to tables according to their birth months. They were each given an interview sheet and encouraged to talk to their new friends about

their likes and dislikes, interests and activities. Each student was then prompted to write a sentence about their new friend on a poster board. Sixth-graders Olivia Quitone and Ruby Hogan explained that they had met before, but had never really become acquainted. The girls were pleasantly surprised to find out that they had a lot of common interests. “Olivia has a brother and participates in sports like me,” Ruby stated. “We will probably hang out after school now.”

Fessler even displayed her own wig to the audience, and made the first donation to the wig bank. In her address to the women, Cindy Knoll, cochair of the evening and breast cancer survivor, explained her connection to Circle of Hope: “I now want to inspire and serve others as I move forward in my life with an even greater sense of purpose. [All the women in attendance] give hope to breast cancer women fighting for their lives with the money [they] donated.” Women who contributed large sponsorships to Circle of Hope received a decorative mezuzah with a real scroll inside, in order to bring protection to their home

and family. The evening’s features of note were a runway show sponsored by Runway Couture, Let’s Accessorize and Lets Bag It, where many of the models were themselves breast cancer survivors, and an address by Dr. Ruth Oratz, premier oncologist at New York University’s Langone Medical Center, who emphasized that while medical help is crucial for those suffering, care and support from the community is even more important. Outstanding vocalist Julien Harris entertained the crowd to the musical accompaniment of Justin Neugeboren, both of whom are seniors at Kennedy High School. In her address to the audience, Mrs. Chanie Kramer, co-director of Chabad of Merrick and cochair of Journey for a Purpose, emphasized the spiritual significance of Circle of Hope: “When we want to connect with G-d, when we wish to become holier and better people, helping another person is the way we accomplish that.” For updates on future Chabad events and programs, visit www.CircleofHopeMerrick .org or ChabadJewishLife.org.

On October 25th, Chabad of MerrickBellmore-Wantagh made history, by hosting its first annual Journey for a Purpose, a women’s evening in support of those who face breast cancer. Over 300 women from across Merrick, Bellmore, Wantagh and Long Island attended the event. The evening was also the launch of Circle of Hope, a unique organization providing resources for breast cancer patients, their families and the community in the form of financial assistance, emotional support and preventative health seminars. The entire region was so impressed with the Circle of Hope project that legislator Dave Denenberg declared October 25th, “Circle of Hope Day.” “What an amazing event put together to honor and help those suffering from breast cancer in our community. Everything was organized, beautiful and appropriate. I hope that the Circle of Hope continues with its message for many years,” said Nadine Kaufman of Merrick. Circle of Hope was formed in partnership with Sharsheret, the

Wellness Walk In celebration of Red Ribbon Week, McVey Elementary School students, accompanied by faculty and parents, pledged to keep a healthy balance between mind and body by participating in the school’s annual onemile Wellness Walk around the neighborhood. The event was attended by Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray and Islanders mascot Sparky, who energized the students and reminded them that having a

healthy mind and body is an important asset in life. “We have been teaching McVey students how to make good choices and keep a healthy body that is drug-free,” stated PTA Wellness Committee member and walk organizer Heidi D’Amico. “This activity is a culmination of those lessons learned during Red Ribbon Week.” Under the direction of music teacher Jessica Bessel, the school’s band added a celebratory tone

Each of the classes designed and decorated colorful posters and banners and dressed in red to symbolize the lessons they had learned during the week’s various assemblies. Upon returning to the building, the students gathered on the front sidewalk and recited pledges for a drug-free school and community.

The eighth-grade girls soccer team at Salk Middle School in the Levittown School District raised over $1,000 for tuberous sclerosis research and support. The team was motivated to raise these funds through their friendship with 10-yearold Levittown resident Ally Spear, who was

diagnosed with this genetic disorder. Dressed in tuberous sclerosis awareness Tshirts, Ally and her parents attended the Seahawk’s October 18th game against Merrick. The team credited their 2-0 victory to Ally’s positive spirit and inspiration. Tuberous sclerosis is a

group of two genetic disorders that affect the skin, brain, nervous system, kidneys and heart and cause noncancerous tumors to grow. The diseases are named after a “tuber,” or root-shaped growth that often appears in the patient’s brain.

pounds of mixed vegetables and 36 pounds of rice, which were added to offerings of pot roast, salad and baked ziti. The students are planning to continue extending this offering while the residents are still living in the shelter. Culinary instructor Lillian Creedon explained that this activity was an exercise in community service, a keystone principle in the district’s character education program. “We teach students the importance of community service, and this activity allowed the students to make a difference firsthand in the shelter residents’ lives. We don’t know minute to

minute when we may find ourselves in the same situation.” After they had finished cooking, the students warmed the meals to be taken down the hall by American Red Cross personnel. Shelter manager Tom Mahaffie, a Red Cross worker from Indiana, said he was impressed with the district’s hospitality. “Eating ready-made meals after a while is tough,” Mr. Mahaffie remarked. “I don’t believe we have had such an outpouring of help from a community before. The meals have been both delicious and heart-warming.”

Walking For A Bright Future

In celebration of Red Ribbon Week, students at Meadowbrook Elementary School gathered for a Unity Walk around school grounds to reinforce the importance of a healthy and drug-free lifestyle. Accompanied by their teachers and staff, the students wore neoncolored attire to symbolize their bright drug-free futures and chanted,

“Stop. Look. We’re the Brook, and we say no to drugs” as they followed in a long line around the school grounds. For the past week, students have attended a myriad of assemblies that emphasized a healthy lifestyle and supported the message of Red Ribbon Week. Students in each class also had the opportunity to sign a

pledge for a drug-free life. After the walk, the students and faculty gathered in front of the school for a message from Assistant Principal Gail Gallucci and social worker and Unity Walk organizer Margherita Diglio. “We all want a bright future and need to make healthy choices for ourselves,” Ms. Gallucci told the students.

Dear Readers,

The following Town Shelters and Rescues are reaching out for the community’s help...

From Bulldog Rescue: Due to the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, many of our volunteers have been left without power, evacuated from their homes and tending to getting their own affairs in order. We are in great need of foster homes in New Jersey, Long Island and surrounding areas. This means that if you genuinely want to help a Bulldog who has no where else to turn, we will cover all approved medical expenses and will provide a MCM Rottweiler Rescue crate if needed. If you would like to volunteer to foster, please contact: www.mcmrottweilerrescue.petfinder.com Bulldogrescue1@aol.com. It’s snowing as I write this and, like many of you, I haven’t had electricity for ten days now. I’m wearing multiple layers of clothing and gloves, and it feels as if I’ll never be able to get warm again. But I need to reach out to you because our friends, our neighbors and our community needs our assistance.

placed. Some are waiting for the power to be turned back on; others need to rebuild. These people are living with friends and in shelters. One of their serious concerns is their beloved pets. What we’re trying to organize is a list of people available to help, one family at a time. If you can open your home temporarily to a dog or cat - not an unknown stray; rather, someone’s pet - for a limited period of time, you would be helping a family in their worst hour. Many of these families just have nowhere to take their pets while they get themselves back together. With that in mind, please e-mail me if you are able to assist. If you can take someone’s pet, let me know exactly what your requirements are... Dog or cat? Size? Male or female? Friendly with other pets or kids? How long you can foster? If you can’t take in a pet but can help in some other way (maybe transport?), please let me know. And finally, if you have any ideas on how to make this endeavor work and want to help organize it, please let me know. We will take all the help we can get.

Little Shelter: Readers, the Little Shelter in Huntington has been devastated by the storm. Eighteen trees are down and Kennel Two is destroyed. Thank heavens none of the dogs were hurt. Little Shelter is in desperate need of immediate donations (large or small) in order to rebuild and continue their wonderful rescue work and community outreach programs. Call 631.368.8770 or visit little www.shelter.com to make a donation. Do you have a Hurricane Sandy story you’d like to share? Long or short, furry or feathered, happy or sad - please send them to me for publication. Please be safe and warm, visit a shelter and adopt. Remember, Your Best Friend Is Waiting....

Housing Relief

ith the post-Hurricane Sandy nor’easter bearing down on Long Island on November 7th, an out-ofstate tree-trimming crew in need of housing found a warm welcome - not to mention comfortable sleeping quarters, hot meals and showers - at Mercy Medical Center. The team from Storm Services, LLC, was brought to Long Island by National Grid to clear trees from power lines to facilitate restoration of electricity knocked out by Sandy. When the two

dozen workers from Texas, Colorado and Florida contacted Mercy about the need for shelter from the gathering nor’easter, they stated, “The hospital just said to come on down and rolled out the red carpet for us.” Mercy’s Environmental Services Department quickly and efficiently set up dormitory space near the hospital’s Emergency Department. It was the second time Mercy’s environmental services team was called to action to set up temporary

shelter during the ongoing weather emergency. In advance of the hurricane, the hospital took in 40 patients evacuated from Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip and 25 patients evacuated from a nursing home in Long Beach. Good Samaritan’s patients were returned to that facility shortly after Sandy passed, but Mercy has continued to provide housing for the nursing home patients more than a week after the storm.

Recovery Center The Recovery Center will assist businesses who have suffered and need disaster assistance. This assistance will be in the form of an SBA Diaster Loan. Personnel will be available to walk

businessmen and women through the loan process so that they can submit their loan packages. For more information, contact 631.420.2765.

During and after Hurricane Sandy, Nassau Community College has been proud to play a significant role in providing relief to victims and evacuees. The College is currently the host site of the largest evacuation center in Nassau County, which is located in the Physical Education Building. That center is administered by the American Red Cross. NCC also hosts a special medical needs shelter, administered by the Nassau County Department of Health. Several agencies of the Federal government have utilized space in the College Union Building, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Small Business Administration and the Department of Health and Human Services. The students, faculty, administrators and staff of the College - some of whom have been victims of the storm themselves have also been organizing donations and volunteering their time to assist victims of the storm. Many have brought clothes, toiletries and other items to the shelters located on campus to

provide for evacuees. Others have volunteered to help sort these items. NCC’s Student Government Association has been of great help in organizing donation efforts on campus. “We all recognize that this is a time of special need for our county and its people, and we stand ready to be part of that effort,” said Dr. Kenneth Saunders, Officer in Charge of Nassau Community College. “So many have worked in different and yet equally real ways, both as individuals and collective groups, to make the College’s response to Hurricane Sandy a tremendously caring and effective effort.” Michael Duarte, NCC Shelter Manager for the American Red Cross, agreed, and said, “The College has been terrific. It has helped us in so many ways. We recognize the sacrifice that Nassau Community College has made for us.” The Nassau County Department of Health “has had an excellent partnership with Nassau Community College during these challenging times,” according to Carolyn McCummings,

Shelter Manager. “NCC has gone above and beyond what it has been called to do, and it has been a tremendous help to us.” Linda Garrow, Disaster Assistance Center Manager for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, noted that “Nassau Community College has been extremely accommodating to us.” She said NCC officials have d e m o n s t r a t e d o v e r w h e l m i n g compassion for Hurricane Sandy’s victims. “We have found that the College has been incredibly supportive,” said Bill Mastrianni, Commander of the Federal Disaster Medical Assistance team (DMAT). DMAT works closely with state and local health and medical officials before and after any disaster.

Working With The Community In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Bethpage Federal Credit Union is working closely with the United Way of Long Island and the American Red Cross Long Island to Support victims of Hurricane Sandy. Bethpage has set up the Bethpage Disaster Relief Fund with the United Way of Long Island to help support Long Island communities in need. Bethpage will match every donation up to a total of $50,000. To donate, visit any Bethpage branch with cash or a check, payable to the United Way of Long Island. Checks can also be mailed to Bethpage Federal Credit Union, c/o Community Development at 899 South Oyster Bay Road, Bethpage, NY 11714. Bethpage has also made a substantial $25,000 donation to the American Red Cross Relief Operation for Hurricane Sandy, which grows by the day, as the American Red Cross continues to provide meals, water, supplies and comfort to those in need

following the hurricane. “We at Bethpage send our thoughts and prayers out to everyone affected by Hurricane Sandy, and pledge our commitment to do everything we can to help our community get through this difficult time,” said Kirk Kordelski, President & CEO, Bethpage Federal Credit Union. “We encourage those lucky enough to make it through without significant loss to join in to support your neighbors. By donating to the Bethpage Disaster Relief Fund, your financial contribution will be matched by Bethpage and distributed by the United Way of Long Island to provide strong, local support to our friends and families in need.” “The United Way of Long Island is proud to once again partner with Bethpage Federal Credit Union to support Long Island during this time of crisis,” said Theresa Regnate, President & CEO, United Way of Long Island. “By matching 100 percent of the donations, every dollar contributed

will have a more significant impact and allow us to help even more families in need. We thank Bethpage for their support, and hope this sets a model for additional businesses and organizations to pledge support moving forward.” If people need support information in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, visit the free, confidential Long Island regional helpline, 2-1-1 at www.211longisland.org. Now 100 percent operational, with all 26 branches open for business and fully up-tospeed, Bethpage is also working to quickly review new loan applications and requests to modify existing loans to help our community members get access to the money they need to rebuild and repair. Bethpage is offering special emergency home equity loans, auto loans, lines of credit and credit cards. To discuss your financial options to help get through this crisis, visit a local Bethpage branch or call 800.628.7070.
