Art Mural Unveiled assau County Legislator Norma L. Gonsalves, the County Legislature’s acting presiding officer, recently attended the unveiling of a mural created by the Woodland Middle School Art Club, under the direction of Art teacher John Healy. The mural was scheduled to be dedicated on December 8th at a public meeting of the Legislature and will hang in the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building in Mineola. It’s the holidays and for most Americans, that means eating – lots of eating – followed by weight gain and a New Year’s resolution to lose weight.

But why not take a healthier approach to what we eat during this holiday season and beyond?

According to a recent website survey, about 18

percent of people say it’s hard for them to eat healthy because they don’t want to stop eating their favorite foods. The good news is you don’t have to.

You can still enjoy your favorite occassional indulgences, but in moderation. It’s all about being mindful of what you eat.

Mindless Eating Mindless eating is

consuming food just because it’s there. It’s eating while distracted – watching TV, working at a computer or texting on our smartphones. It’s eating for emotional comfort instead of for hunger. Simply put, it’s not paying attention to what we eat which can lead to being overweight and even obesity.

“Mindless eating has

always been an issue,” said Riska Platt, M.S., a registered dietitian and certified nutritionist for the Cardiac Rehabilitation Center at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York. “The key to mindful eating is awareness. Just by paying more attention to what you eat, you’re more likely to make beneficial changes.”

Eat Mindfully This Holiday When you pay attention to what you’re eating, you can make small changes that make a big difference.

Here are some tips toward a more mindful approach: • Control portions.

Especially during the holidays, know that you’ll have more opportunities to eat festive snacks and desserts. You don’t have to deprive yourself, just eat smaller portions and less often.

• Eat when you’re hungry. Just because the clock says noon doesn’t mean you have to eat. If you’re not hungry, wait until you are – just don’t wait until you’re famished because you might overeat. Also, don’t eat just because the food is available. Learn more about why you might be eating when not hungry.

• Plan. Prepare healthy snacks throughout the day. If you tend to get hungry between meals, bring along a 200-calorie, whole grain, high-fiber snack. Fiber keeps you feeling full longer. Learn how a little planning helps your heart, and your budget.

• Slow down. Enjoy each bite and put your fork down while chewing, then take a drink between each bite. This gives your body enough time to trigger your brain that you are satisfied (not necessarily full).

• Pay attention. Do not eat in front of the TV or computer, or while standing in the kitchen or talking on the phone.

When you do these things, you’re more likely to lose track of how much you’ve eaten.

• Use technology. As we continue to become increasingly distracted by modern technology, our focus on health can fall to the back burner. But it doesn’t have to be that way. “We can actually use our smartphones and other electronic devices to help us,” said Platt, a

volunteer with the American Heart Association. “There are now apps that manage food records, count calories, help you track what you eat and even provide guidance on healthy food choices at the grocery store and restaurants.”

•Keep a food diary.

Write down everything you eat, look at it, then identify why you ate it – was it hunger, stress, boredom? Then look for areas you can make adjustments and incorporate healthy changes. “Keeping a food diary is really key to awareness,” Platt said.

“Most people are surprised at all they’ve consumed when they review what they’ve eaten.”

Eating healthier is just one lifestyle change you can make to live a heart healthy life. More than 80 percent of heart disease can be prevented by simply lifestyle changes.

Breaking The Holiday Blues While most people make the assumption that the suicide rate is highest during the winter holiday season, the experts at Long Island Crisis Center (LICC) say that the spring months actually rank highest for suicide.

“But, it is true that a lot of us walk around with a case of the ‘holiday blues,’ which could shade our perception,” states LICC’s Associate Executive Director, Theresa Buhse.

“Many people who attempt suicide feel depressed.

Two days. That’s it. Two days from now, the world will end. What to do with those remaining 48 hours…

Silly as it sounds, this is exactly what many people have been planning for in anticipation of the ominous 12.21.12. Pack your bags, stock up on the essentials and head underground with your rifles – because, let’s face it, ancient predictions seem to have a lot of merit in this day and age.

Right.

Call me a skeptic. Brand me a cynic. Perhaps, in

two days, all of us nonbelievers will be shocked by the turn of events. Or lack of, as the case may be. Let the doomsayers and naysayers battle it out.

One interesting question it does bring to light is: What would you do with your last few days on earth? Who would you spend them with? Where would you go? What would you hope to accomplish?

There never seems to be enough time day to day to do what we want. That’s under normal circumstances. But throw in the urgency of the end of civilization, and priorities tend to be reevaluated just a bit.

This is not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, in two days time, assuming we will all be sitting here laughing about the ancient Mayan prophecy gone wrong, we will have ample time to take this new “bucket” list and put it into action. Sort of like a new lease on life, no?

So relax. Enjoy. Savor.

Christmas is around the corner, followed by that traditional Times Square fresh start we all look forward to…and beyond that, who knows. Part of the fun, part of the adventure, part of the experience – here’s to the beginning of a whole new world!

It was by “Lights of Love� that the Good Samaritan Hospital Christmas Tree was lit this year. The hospital’s tree lighting event included fun activities and an opportunity to remember or honor someone special by lighting a bulb on the Christmas tree.

The festival raised more than $5,000 for The Hospital Foundation and was enjoyed by several hundred community members, staff and elected officials. The free event featured refreshments and lots of fun with a visit from Santa, his elves and

Nassau BOCES has teamed up with Autoseum in Mineola to offer an Auto Body Customizing program, where students will learn from the country’s premiere auto fabricators and earn industry certification, while surrounded by some of the most famous cars in the world, such as the 1966 Batmobile and the General Lee. “Auto collision specialists will benefit by learning enhanced skill sets,” Adult Evening Program Supervisor Rick Polansky says of the new program. “For example, they’ll get valuable handson experience creating molds for custom grills, spoiler and scoops.”

The initial phase of the Foundation’s brick campaign generated over $90,000 raised by 157 donors - employees, families and grateful patients in a prominent display of their appreciation and support for the important work of Nassau University Hospital. Gianelli said: “We are proud of the Foundation’s work and for all the expressions of love articulated in the bricks.”

Major contributors to the Donor Wall are Zaki and Rahat Hossain, Dr. Krishan Kumar, NUMC chief of pediatric emergency medicine, the American Association of Physicians of Indian origin, Queens Long Island Chapter, and Mohammed Saleh, R.PH. “With help from our donors, the Foundation erected this Donor Wall to make a statement.

Strategically located outside of our new state of the art Emergency Department, it’s a symbol of the excitement and innovation ahead of us, and the pride that together, it will take for us to get there. We are looking forward to adding many more bricks to this wall in years to come,” said Parrish Williams Zaki Hossain, a loyal benefactor and member of the board of the NuHealth Foundation, along with his wife Rahat, joined donors at the unveiling, stating: “We need to help this hospital continue to improve as it has during the last ten years, with a new emergency department, new burn center and several other modernized locations. My main reason for supporting NUMC is to help makes more changes at this wonderful institution.”

Rising To The Occasion During Red Ribbon Week, Levittown students at Salk Middle School were reminded about making good choices and being tolerant of others during the school’s first RISE Day. The character education program stressed the virtues of respect, integrity, sympathy and empathy (RISE) and punctuated the message of Red Ribbon Week.

To celebrate RISE Day, the students attended

several motivational assemblies, took part in a Mix It Up Day lunch, and were encouraged to dress in red and mismatched clothes throughout the week.

“RISE Day reinforces the values that the district encourages through its character education programs,” Salk Middle School Dean Dan Agovino explained. “The students really enjoy and learn a lot from the assemblies, which motivate them to

make good choices in their lives.”

During one of the assemblies, BMX cyclists Stephen Cerra and Joey Banford demonstrated a backward kicking wheel, the hitchhiker and the magic spin and encouraged students to stay physically fit, work hard and follow goals. “I did not get where I am in one day,” Cerra stated. “I never gave up. It’s the same in life.”

Canine Companions The Builder’s Club at Levittown’s Wisdom Lane Middle School donated $200 and a basket of dog goodies to Canine Companions, an organization that provides specially trained

dogs to people with disabilities.

During a recent presentation, Bill Arnold and his son, Brian, visited the club members with their black Labrador retriever named Arrow.

During the visit, the students learned the methods used when training companion dogs, and Arrow even demonstrated some of his duties.

The W.T. Clarke Middle school seventh-grade Honors Science Research Program hosted a panel of residents, government officials, and local industry and non-profit representatives to discuss issues facing the Long Island community. Under the direction of English teacher Cindy Dale and science teachers Donna Delvecchio and Wendy Wansor, the panel provided the 65 honor students the opportunity to hear firsthand about health and safety

My friends, just as oil always rises to the top, whatever good we do will always “rise” to the top, to make Long Island a Strong Island.”

After the lighting, the attendees danced to live Chanukah music by Mendel Felberman of Brooklyn. A group of dancing Rabbis from Brooklyn also added to the joy of the warm, balmy evening!

Over 500 participated in Chabad of MerrickBellmore’s Chanukah activities and events. The largest events were the Great Menorah Car Parade on Saturday, December 8th and the Chanukah Wonderland on Sunday, December 9th, which took place at the beautifully decorated clubhouse hall at the Merrick Golf Course.

For the first time, the Merrick Fire Department led the Great Menorah Car Parade, with its sirens blaring and flashing lights! It was followed by a limousine (courtesy of Metro Limousine Service) with a Menorah on its rooftop, and loud Chanukah music was coming out from the loudspeakers of the following car. All parade goers received a bag with Chanukah gifts & a Chanukah balloon which they tied to their vehicles.

With the help of the 7th precinct, the car parade made its way down Merrick Road to the Merrick LIRR. There was a true spirit of ‘freedom of religion’ which is one of Chanukah’s main themes.

Hanukkah Celebration

NIGHT OF HANUKKAH - The 4th Night of Hanukkah Menorah Lighting Ceremony was recently held at the Veterans’ Memorial Park in Bellmore on December 11th. Bill Wilgus, VP Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores, opened the evening ceremonies, followed by Hanukkah Songs sung by members of the Bellmore Jewish Center Hebrew School. Rabbi Howard Hoffman of Temple-El of Bellmore provide traditional Hanukkah comments, with closing remarks made by Rabbi Raphael Ostrovsky of the Bellmore Jewish Center.

High Achievers Administrators at Levittown’s Division Avenue High School announced the school’s Class of 2013 top 27 seniors during the annual Blue and Silver Luncheon.

During this school tradition, the students enjoyed lunch with their peers, along with Superintendent of Schools Dr. James Grossane, Principal Dr. Francesco Ianni, Guidance Chairman James Wallace and faculty.

Mr. Wallace announced that each of the seniors attending the luncheon had achieved a 95 percent or higher weighted grade point average.

The students were asked

to introduce themselves, state their choice of college and potential major, describe their most memorable high school moment, and explain what they will miss most about Division Avenue High School. Many of these students are interested in pursuing careers in the sciences, journalism and engineering.

Dr. Ianni congratulated the seniors on their accomplishments and encouraged them to always believe in themselves. “You can move yourselves forward by always bringing your own beliefs and passions to the table,” he stated.

HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE - Nassau County Legislator Dave Denenberg, Wantagh Preservation Society President Chris Wendt and former Wantagh Fire Department Captain Ron Chowske, Jr. (aka “Santa Claus”) joined members of the Wantagh High School Modern Jazz Ensemble Chorus during a break in their performance at the Wantagh Preservation Society's Holiday Open House on Sunday, December 9th, at the Wantagh Museum.

Nassau County Legislator Norma L. Gonsalves, the county legislature’s acting presiding officer, recently attended the unveiling of a mural created by the Woodland Middle School Art Club under the direction of art teacher John Healy. The mural will be dedicated on December 8th at a public meeting of the Legislature and will hang in the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building in Mineola.

The mural’s theme, “One Person, One Vote,” depicts the grand façade of the Legislature’s county seat, a large American flag, and the Nassau County Legislature seal.

Dr. Healy explained that in order to create the mural, a photo of the building was projected onto a canvas and then traced and painted by the student-artists.

“I am so proud of these exceptionally talented students,” Dr. Healy stated. “I hope that everyone who visits the Nassau County Legislature will enjoy this mural for years to come.”

For 20 years, Dr. Healy’s Art Club students have participated in this program. Recent murals created by students are currently featured at the Nassau Educators Federal Credit Union and the Nassau County Firefighter’s Museum,

housed in the Cradle of Aviation Museum. After the dedication of the most current mural, the Art Club students will start work on a painting for the American Theater Dance Workshop, a dance repertory company in New Hyde Park.

Legislator Gonsalves congratulated the art students on their vision and design. “As a former Woodland Middle School teacher, it was great to see the wonderful talents of these students,” she stated. “I look forward to seeing the mural hang in the building of the Nassau County Legislature for many years.”

special education teachers, ELL teachers and library media specialists from each school will learn how best to implement the technology to support student achievement of the ELA common core standards. These teams will be trained by experts in special education, English as a Second Language (ESL) and technology, and be mentored by Model Schools coaches.

“The goal is to raise the ELA performance of elementary-level special education and ELL students, to help them meet the common core standards,” says Supervisor Pat Koehler of the three-year grant project. “The technology is research proven and the professional development is exemplary. In the end, we hope to increase the number of Nassau County students who graduate from school ready to succeed in college and careers.”

Nassau BOCES won a Learning Technology Grant (LTG) through the New York State Education Department, providing $150,000 over the next three years to strengthen English Language Arts (ELA) skills for English Language Learners (ELL) and special education students in two Nassau County school districts.

The LTG funds state-ofthe-art technology and professional development to improve student achievement. Through the grant, the districts will receive sound enhancement systems and document cameras to improve classroom learning.

The sound enhancement system — consisting of a wireless microphone for the teacher, a remote receiver and mounted speakers — has been proven to eliminate ambient noise and thus improve student engagement.
