Pleasant Surprise
icksville Nursery School teacher Miss Linda got the surprise of her life one day at the school recently. As she entered her classroom, she was a bit confused to see her boyfriend Adam there with all the children, who were lined up and holding signs. What did the signs say? Will - You - Marry - Me? How exciting! The children were very happy to participate in such a happy occasion and of course, she said “Yes!” Congratulations to the happy couple!

Having Heart
With hearts a-flutter the day before Valentine’s Day, Central Boulevard students in the Bethpage School District have been using their hearts for some more heart-healthy purposes. First- through fifthgraders recently spent more than an hour participating in the classic
Jump Rope for Heart program in an effort to raise money for the American Heart Association. Central Boulevard’s physical education staff puts a special twist on the event for third- through fifth-grade students by turning it into a series of fun after-school jump-
Super Bowl Of Smarts
roping contests, for which students participate in groups. The program, currently in its ninth year at the school, drew more than 100 participants and has raised more than $4,000 to date.
On February 1st, SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) held its fourth annual fundraising breakfast at Farmingdale State College’s Knapp Hall to benefit the Fred Breithut Scholarship. The theme of this year’s breakfast was Super Bowl of Smarts. The scholarship, named after the late founder of SBPLI, is made possible for up to four years, with
an amount of $1,000 per semester. Among the requirements for students to become eligible are enrollment in SBPLI’s FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Long Island robotics program while in high school for at least two years; a combined SAT score of 1100 or better; and enrollment in Farmingdale State College’s four-year programs in Mathematics,
Engineering Technology, Computer Systems or related fields of study. All scholarship applications are due by March 1st. The winning recipient will be named at the 14th annual Long Island FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition, which will take place on April 4th-6th at Hofstra University.

For a $30 donation guests enjoyed the sounds of live music with an all-star lineup of legendary Long Island bands including 1 Step Ahead, The Cold Spring Harbor Band paying tribute to Billy Joel, Just Cause and Dr. G’s All Star Veteran Band. Gift baskets, raffles, food and live music were enjoyed by all into the late evening. “It is truly remarkable to see so many people come together to help those challenged with a disability,” stated John Lessard, Executive Director of DDI. “Each year Jim Cronin dedicates so much of his time to putting together this wonderful event to help support the vital programs that DDI has to benefit Long Islanders with autism and other developmental disabilities. Jim’s dedication to DDI is incredible and admirable.”

Fleeting Thoughts By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Far too often, we are reminded of the fleeting nature of life; the fact that, in an instant, things can change, throwing any sense of normalcy and routine into complete upheaval. Whether by the hands of Mother Nature or some otherworldly force, many of these factors are far beyond our control, making it all the more crucial that we embrace those things we do, in fact, have control over. One of my favorite films back in my high school Political Science class was Dead Poets Society, simply for the fact that its mantra of “Carpe Diem” seemed to make perfect sense. Seize the
day, capture the moment… live each day to the fullest. You just never know what may be around the corner. Certainly, there are times when something positive is on the horizon; surprises need not always portend tragedy and aggravation. It just seems that, on the whole, we as a society tend to take our lives – and those most important to us – for granted, never anticipating a day when this sense of contentment (read: complacency) might be turned upside down. What can we do to prepare for this eventuality? Well, nothing and everything – all at the same time. There are those circumstances which reach far beyond our control;
the key is to take the given situation and make the most of it, and to move forward having learned something about ourselves. If this means taking more time to appreciate the little things in life…or savoring each moment with those we love… or simply reaching toward a long-unrealized goal… this is progress. This is positive. This is appreciation. This is not to say we will not each continually be faced with new obstacles each and every day – some minor, some life-changing – but at the very least, we will be better prepared to deal with them. Carpe Diem always… Those who seize the day are those who have few regrets.

Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism on Long Island, held its annual Rockin’ for Autism concert. Nearly 500 Long Islanders packed Mulcahy’s Pub and Music Hall in Wantagh to raise over $30,000 for DDI. “Despite the economic climate we all face today, it is heartwarming to witness the generosity of the numerous volunteers and the nearly 500 attendees who have lent themselves to help benefit the more than 1,500 adults and children who receive services daily through DDI’s many programs,” said Jim Cronin, Chairman of the event and a member of the DDI Foundation Board. “A special thanks to our Event Music Director, Steve Alliano, and the talented musicians who donated their services and talents to make the day a true success.”

first year start-up firm. Its mission: to provide VE firms world-wide with affordable, high-speed phone and Internet service. William Floyd High School future business leaders placed third with their Forever Fit company, an online fitness one-stop shop committed to the health of their customers and the planet. “Nassau BOCES is extremely proud to help offer this opportunity to school districts as part of the Perkins Grant Consortium, said Ms. Gene Silverman, executive director, Nassau BOCES Department of Career and Technical Education and facilitator of the consortium. “This is one of the many ways the grant enriches the lives of students throughout Nassau County by giving them real world work place and 21st Century skills while still in high school. The competition consisted of a written business plan and a ten minute presentation of the firm’s business plan followed by a five minute question and answer period. Over 30 business partners representing colleges and large and small business on LI judged the competition. The firms’ marketing
and sales departments participated in a minitrade fair, complete with booths and a variety of product and promotional information. Students had the chance to connect with other virtual businesses to conduct business, learn about salesmanship and stimulate the VE economy. Educators and administrators shared best practices and challenges in Virtual Business education programs. “The opportunity to create and operate a business across a network of 5,000 student-run companies spanning 40 countries captures the energy, imagination and passion of the students and opens their classroom to the world said Ellen Palazzo, Virtual Enterprises facilitator. “The students have worked in their “firms since September in preparation for the business plan event. They develop and apply a range of academic and business skills that will prepare them for success in employment, college and the community. Participation in the Virtual Enterprises course allows students to develop skills that will broaden their knowledge about today’s business world, the global

Virtual Business High school entrepreneurs came together to present their ‘virtual’ companies at the third annual Long Island Virtual Enterprises Business Plan Competition recently, sponsored by the Nassau BOCES Perkins Consortium in partnership with Eastern and Western Suffolk BOCES Perkins Consortiums, Virtual Enterprises, International and the CTE Technical Assistance Center of New York. High school students enrolled in the Virtual Enterprises (VE) course create and manage a virtual company under the guidance of a teacherfacilitator and a business partner. Students become involved in every aspect of running a company from human resources to accounting, and from product development, production and distribution to marketing and sales. These programs are often a “capstone course in business education through which students have the opportunity to apply the business skills they have learned in accounting, marketing and management. Many of these programs have dual credit agreements with Farmingdale State College as well as articulations with other colleges. More than 300 students from 19 high schools across Long Island competed for top honors at the Long Island Virtual Enterprises Business Plan Competition, hosted by Dr. Francine Federman at Farmingdale State College, recently. Cupcake Break, a VE firm from Bellmore-Merrick CHSD’s John F. Kennedy High School, took first place for their business plan. The company’s mission is to provide unique, high quality, delicious and customizable desserts to “Make Life Sweeter. The Hewlett High School team, FlashComm, came in second place for this

Students work collaboratively with their classmates and the 5,000 Virtual Enterprise firms worldwide in business ventures which require hands-on applications, problem-solving, and written and verbal communication. The first place winner, Cupcake Break will represent the Long

High school entrepreneurs came together to present their ‘virtual’ companies at the third annual Long Island Virtual Enterprises Business Plan Competition recently, sponsored by the Nassau BOCES Perkins Consortium in partnership with Eastern and Western Suffolk BOCES Perkins Consortiums, Virtual Enterprises, International and the CTE Technical Assistance Center of New York. High school students enrolled in the Virtual Enterprises (VE) course create and manage a virtual company under the guidance of a teacher-facilitator and a business partner. Students become involved in every aspect of running a company from human resources to accounting, and from product development, production and distribution to marketing and sales. These programs are often a “capstone” course in business education through which students have the opportunity to apply the business skills they have learned in accounting, marketing and management. The company’s mission is to provide unique, high quality, delicious and customizable desserts to “Make Life Sweeter.” The Hewlett High School team, FlashComm, came in second place for this first year start-up firm. Its mission: to provide VE firms world-wide with affordable, high-speed

Taking First Place phone and Internet service. William Floyd High School future business leaders placed third with their Forever Fit company, an online fitness one-stop shop committed to the health of their customers and the planet. “Nassau BOCES is extremely proud to help offer this opportunity to school districts as part of the Perkins Grant Consortium,” said Ms. Gene Silverman, executive director, Nassau BOCES Department of Career and Technical Education and facilitator of the consortium. “This is one of the many ways the grant enriches the lives
of students throughout Nassau County by giving them real world work place and 21st Century skills while still in high school.” The competition consisted of a written business plan and a ten minute presentation of the firm’s business plan followed by a five minute question and answer period. Over 30 business partners representing colleges and large and small business on LI judged the competition. The firms’ marketing and sales departments participated in a mini-trade fair, complete with booths and a variety of product and promotional information. Students had the chance to connect with other virtual businesses
to conduct business, learn about salesmanship and stimulate the VE economy. Educators and administrators shared best practices and challenges in Virtual Business education programs. “The opportunity to create and operate a business across a network of 5,000 student-run companies spanning 40 countries captures the energy, imagination and passion of the students and opens their classroom to the world” said Ellen Palazzo, Virtual Enterprises facilitator. “The students have worked in their “firms” since September in preparation for the business plan event. They develop and apply a range of academic and business skills that will prepare them for success in employment, college and the community.” Participation in the Virtual Enterprises course allows students to develop skills that will broaden their knowledge about today’s business world, the global economy, and career and job trends. Students work collaboratively with their classmates and the 5,000 Virtual Enterprise firms worldwide in business ventures which require hands-on applications, problem-solving, and written and verbal communication. The first place winner, Cupcake Break will represent the Long Island region in the 2013 Virtual Enterprises National Business Plan Competition. It takes place during the Youth Business Summit in New York City in April. All the Long Island Virtual Enterprises firms will participate in the International Trade Show there and some students will also participate in the Global Business Challenge as a member of a multinational team working to solve a Harvard Business School case study.
