tudents at Kramer Lane Elementary School in the Bethpage School District recently celebrated Read Across America Day by having their classes swap teachers for the day and engaging in various author-related activities. For example, some third-graders studied author Patricia Polacco, and some of the fifth-graders studied Harry Alder. A great time was had by all the students, who thoroughly enjoyed this literary experience.

Game Farm Kicks Off Season This year, Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo celebrates its 44th season with its grand opening on March 23rd. The park will be open Thursday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout the month of April. From May 1st to May 21st, the Game Farm will be open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. From alligators to zebra and scores of animals in between, the Long Island Game Farm has many interactive areas where guests can touch and, unlike most zoos, actually feed the animals! The first weekend at the Game Farm kicks off with “Nature Nick’s Animal Adventures.” Each show features 10 to 12 animals from all corners of the world, many of them rare and exotic. He has appeared on numerous

TV shows, including “The Martha Stewart Show,” “The Wendy Williams Show,” “Petkeeping with Marc Morrone” and “Good Morning America.” During the months of July and August, a weeklong children’s camp — Camp Zoo — will return. Registration for Camp Zoo is currently underway, marking the beginning of its eighth year as a unique program that provides children with a hands-on educational experience with nature. To see the schedule of upcoming events, visit www. longislandgamefarm.com. “We can’t wait to open for our 44th season. Every year gets better and better as we educate our guests about the animal world and nature. I have the privilege of watching thousands of students experience firsthand what they learn in books from the classroom. One of our greatest joys is

when families throughout the region or visiting Long Island get to enjoy the park and spend quality time together. Bringing people together — what could be better? It is sure to be our best season yet,” said Diane Novak, Co-Owner and President of the Long Island Game Farm. One of the best times of the year to visit the Game Farm is early spring, when many of the animals have given birth to newborns. The Game Farm is expecting the births of new animals. “Once you walk into the Game Farm, take in the beauty of springtime and you may witness the magic of birth,” said Ms. Novak. For more information about the Long Island Game Farm, call 631.878.6670, or visit www.longislandgamefarm. com.

Little League Softball Day Little League Baseball and Softball, along with St. Joseph’s College will team up on Saturday, March 30th, to welcome Little League Softball players to Little League Softball Day. Little League Softball Day will be held at the Outdoor Athletic Complex, 246 Sunrise Highway South Service Road in Patchogue, home of St. Joseph’s College softball. The Golden Eagles will host a game against Lehman College Lightning at 1 p.m. Little Leaguers, their parents and local league volunteers are encouraged to attend the game. The players will come dressed in their Little League uniform jerseys, and following the game will be permitted on to the field to meet the collegiate players and coaches. “As a way of recognizing Little League Softball, and in appreciation of the college softball

experience, Little League International is reaching out to communities by having Little League Softball Days,” Stephen D. Keener, president and chief executive officer of Little League Baseball and Softball, said. “For the seventh straight year, this initiative will afford young athletes of all ages the chance to enjoy the game of softball at its finest. They will have the complete game experience from the warm-ups to game’s end.” Colleges and universities throughout the United States, including the University of Washington; UCLA; the University of Arizona; the University of Tennessee; and the University of Michigan, have hosted similar events in recent years. Little League Softball has over 360,000 players worldwide and is played in nearly all U.S. states. Each summer, Little League International

operates four World Series tournaments for softball, in which world champions in the divisions of Little League (ages 11-12), Junior League (12-14), Senior League (13-16) and Big League Softball (1418) are crowned. Each of the championship games in those tournaments are televised on ESPN or ESPN2. For more information on Little League Softball Day, contact Al Sciangula, Head Coach- St. Joseph’s Softball (asciangula@sjcny.edu) or Tanya Interrante, Asst. Director of Softball- North Babylon Youth League (nbylsoftball.@yahoo. com). Back To Basics By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The more I drive, the more I realize how many truly incompetent motorists there are out there. Let’s start with the basics. If you come out to find snow accumulated on the roof of your car, CLEAN IT OFF. Those of us who have the misfortune of driving behind you would greatly appreciate it. I know you think you’re saving time, but honestly, they make rear windows transparent for a reason…you know, just in case you want to take a quick peek back there every now and then. Once on the road, let’s review a few pointers… Shoulders of the road were made for the purpose of easing into and out of traffic while merging. Trust me, it’s a much better alternative than

practically standing on your brakes while in the right traffic lane as you suddenly realize your exit is approaching – oh, in 3 feet or so. Same goes for merging onto a major highway or parkway. Do not assume that the lane is clear for you to simply sail right through at 60 mph. There are occasionally, you know, other vehicles already inhabiting that space. Then there are those scenarios that are simply so bizarre, they are beyond words. A few weeks ago, I was stopped at a light on the Service Road of the LIE. As I waited in the left hand turning lane, a truck opposite me in the right hand lane, I noticed a car approach in the middle lane, “driven” by a man staring intently at the map spread across his steering wheel. Suddenly, he apparently

decided that he needed to be somewhere else, and proceeded to back up on the Service Road and cut his wheel, angling his car toward this aforementioned truck in the right lane…all the while, never shifting his gaze from the map. With a mix of horror and amusement, I watched the scene unfold. I glanced at the truck driver, to see him absolutely hysterical with laughter, shaking his head in amazement. The light turned green at that point, spurring me to get out of there before witnessing Act II of this particular play. No telling what the next move might have been! Let’s all focus people. And not on our maps, please. The road. Only the road. And for goodness sake, invest in a snowbrush.

Creative Expressions She Doesn’t Look Back The Gallery Anymore

Featuring Poetry And Photos Submitted By Our Readers!

By: Karen Ranieri, North Massapequa My babies are growing up What they used to love me doing Is just embarrassing now My little boy walks down the hall From a distance, all I see is his back Then suddenly, he turns to see if I’m still there And gives me a wave My heart melts ‘Cause his big sisters They don’t look back anymore She doesn’t look back I guess it’s okay It means she’s growing up In every sense of the way Sometimes those moments get lost Day to day But when my little guy looked back It reminded me of so many yesterdays I drop her off to her hourly job She tells me not to stop in front It’s too embarrassing Getting a lift from my mom She scurries in through the door She doesn’t look back anymore My baby is getting ready to dance Her tutu and make-up on I used to walk her backstage And she’d glance and I’d give her a wink You’re going to do great Don’t be scared Just look straight ahead Don’t look at the floor Now, she doesn’t look back anymore They say you have to let go Cut those apron strings

No one told me the pain that would bring ‘Cause she doesn’t look back anymore She packed her bags And we flew and flew A thousand miles later We were at her new school I tried to be strong And decorated her dorm I knew soon It wouldn’t be long To say our goodbyes I didn’t want to ruin her excitement Being on her own for the first time I put on my shades To hide my tears I could feel her stare As I drove away The pain is too great Nothing will be the same as before I’ve had to learn To not look back anymore Hold on to those moments When their sweet little eyes Search for you in a crowd

One day as I was walking with my cane And time for me to go I glanced up And behind the curtain I could see those big brown eyes She was looking back To make sure I was okay Saying a silent prayer That I’d make it home safe on my way My baby looked back today

Dune Project Cancelled

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Chris J. Coschignano and Nassau County District Court Judge Rhonda Erin Fischer recently joined in presenting a Town citation to Andrew Hall, Head Martial Arts Instructor for the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Police Activity League. Andrew was recognized for his efforts in coordinating a charity

“Kick-A-Thon,” enlisting the support of local businesses and residents to assist families facing financial difficulties. The Kick-A-Thon raised funds to help defray the costs for needy children to participate in the martial arts program. The OBENPAL Karate Program provides a safe forum for the personal development of the community’s children,

stressing such values as respect, discipline, courage and integrity while also teaching goal-setting skills and instilling a positive work ethic. The “Kick-A-Thon” demonstrated to the young students about the importance of community involvement and helping others in need.

The Town of Oyster Bay has cancelled its annual Tobay Beach Dune Stabilization Project due to the damage sustained at Tobay Beach by Hurricane Sandy, Town Supervisor John Venditto announced. Although this program is being cancelled for its original date of Saturday, March 16th, Supervisor Venditto stressed that the Town intends to hold this long standing, environmentally important volunteer project for residents of all ages, after restoration efforts have been completed at Tobay Beach. “The cancellation of the

Dune Stabilization project represents an unfortunate ramification of this unprecedented storm, because this event provides an excellent opportunity for community groups and volunteers to lend a hand in an important preservation effort,” Supervisor Venditto said. “Although the effects of Hurricane Sandy have been felt far and wide throughout the Town of Oyster Bay, this is something that we will come back from, and the Town will continue to be intricately involved in clean-up, restoration, and outreach efforts. The Supervisor added

that at present, contractors are in the process of rebuilding the dunes that had been in place on Tobay’s ocean side, in order to aid in future beach preservation efforts. This process, along with the rebuilding of the pavilion and decking that had been heavily damaged during Hurricane Sandy, will bring Tobay Beach back to its former glory in time for the summer season. Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

HofstraCard. There will also be a special performance of This Bud of Love on Thursday, March 21st, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $6. Members of the Hofstra community receive two free tickets with current HofstraCard. Tickets for the Festival Musicale and companion play are also available through the Hofstra Box Office. The cast and crew of This Bud of Love will also be touring local high schools in March. As with other companion play tours in the past, for many teens this is their first exposure to a Shakespearean production. The tour also gives the Hofstra students the valuable experience taking a show on the road – and the tour is really something they have to manage logistically and

artistically. Notable casts over the years have included Phil Rosenthal, the creator and executive producer of Everybody Loves Raymond; Tony-nominees Tom McGowan and Peter Friedman; film and stage actor Joe Morton; film and television actresses Susan Sullivan, Margaret Colin and the late Madeline Kahn; and Tony-nominated Broadway director Susan Schulman, among many others. Steve Buscemi, Kyra Sedgewick and Brian Dennehy, who are not Hofstra alumni, performed in the Shakespeare Festival High School Competition as teenagers. Dennehy has said his brief experience in the Festival helped ignite his love for acting.

Shakespeare Festival Walk like an Egyptian and make your way to Hofstra’s John Cranford Adams Playhouse, where for the first time, the Bard’s Antony and Cleopatra will be performed as part of the University’s Annual Shakespeare Festival, from March 14th through 24th. One of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies, the play is grounded in the historical facts of one of history’s most famous romantic couples. Antony and Cleopatra features direction by James J. Kolb. Show times are Thursday, March 14th at 8 p.m.; Fridays, March 15th and 22nd at 8 p.m.; Saturdays, March 16th and 23rd at 8 p.m.; and Sundays, March 17th and 24th at 2 p.m. Tickets are $12, $10 for senior citizens (over 65) or matriculated non-Hofstra students with

ID. Members of the Hofstra community receive two free tickets with their current HofstraCard. For tickets and more information call the Hofstra Box Office at 516.463.6644, Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. In his director’s notes, Dr. Kolb points out that Antony and Cleopatra features several themes known to recur in Shakespearean works. One is the tension of the “other” – or between conventional and unconventional. Cleopatra was “other” by way of her race (Greek/Egyptian) and also by the fact that she was a great and influential ruler in a world dominated by men. Additionally, the juxtaposition of West vs. East, masculine vs. feminine, Roman coldness and rationality vs. Egyptian

passion and heat are all examples of Shakespeare’s exploration of the antithesis in his works. Each Hofstra Shakespeare Festival comprises multiple performances: the fulllength Shakespearean play, a shorter dramatic piece and the “Festival Musicale,” a concert by the Hofstra Collegium Musicum, an ensemble from the Music Department devoted to the performance of early music. The Festival Musicale includes a chorus and ensembles of historical instruments. This year’s Festival Musicale, directed by Professor of Music William E. Hettrick, is StarCrossed Lovers, featuring guest artist Christopher Morrongiello, lute. The companion play is This Bud of Love, a one-hour version of

Romeo and Juliet, an excellent introduction to the works of William Shakespeare, suitable for young theatergoers. This is the sixth year that a one-hour adaptation of a Shakespearean work has been performed as part of the Festival. This Bud of Love was adapted from Romeo and Juliet by Hofstra Adjunct Professor of English Maureen Connolly McFeeley and is directed by Professor of Drama Cindy Rosenthal. Star-crossed Lovers and This Bud of Love will be performed on Saturday, March 16th, at 2 p.m. at the John Cranford Adams Playhouse. Tickets are $11, $8 for senior citizens (over 65) or matriculated nonHofstra students with ID. Members of the Hofstra community receive one free ticket with current
