On The Road By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Most of us have probably experienced some sort of adversity in our lives, whether of the small, petty variety or the large, lifechanging type. Overall, though, it is how we choose to deal with it that ultimately defines us. If, by taking the high road, we can somehow learn from it while not losing our sense of self in the process, well then, that’s really all we can hope to accomplish. Someone recently pointed out to me that it’s often the star players who are frequently booed while on the road. Why? Because, despite the perceived animosity, there

exists a degree of grudging respect, perhaps even jealousy that the player isn’t part of their own home team. Well, if that’s the case, then I have to believe criticism is the sincerest form of flattery. Otherwise, why would someone take the time and effort to express such negativity, if not for the sheer fact that they are anything but indifferent? Rather, they must be quite invested. Believe me, I will never truly understand those who seem to make their living by spewing hurtful opinions toward others. Perhaps it makes them feel better about themselves; perhaps they are not

equipped to put their words into something more constructive. Either way, I believe it is a combination of arrogance and ignorance which motivates such behavior. But so be it. Those who live their lives to bring others down will continue to do so. Those who strive to make a difference in the lives of others will continue their quest to do so. In the end, all that matters is that a difference was made. If that means wearing that road uniform with pride in the face of adversity, then so be it. Being on the team sure beats being on the outside looking in, doesn’t it?

Wildwood Fall Festival 2012

Are You Ready Win A Pair of Tickets to Rock of Ages

It’s been an exciting year for Hicksville teacher Scott Starkey. In January, Simon & Schuster published his first novel, How To Beat The Bully Without Really Trying. Geared to middle grade readers, this humorous “boy meets bully” tale has enjoyed strong appeal with parents and kids alike. But for Starkey, who teaches fifth grade at East Street Elementary School and serves as head coach of Hicksville High School’s championship soccer team, the Comets, one of the year’s

highlights will come on Saturday, September 22nd, when he appears at the Broadway Mall to sign and discuss his new novel. “I’ve done a lot of book events this year, including one in Ohio, but this will be my first here in Hicksville,” he explains. “For the past 17 years I’ve taught in the district, so I’m hoping to see plenty of familiar faces - maybe even some past students. It will give me a chance to reach a new audience while catching up with parents and their children.” In addition to discussing his novel, Starkey will explore ways to combat bullying along with a second topic he’s passionate about - getting kids to read. “Today’s children have grown up with computers, TV, video games, and smart phones,” observes this father of three. “If a book is going to engage a

craft vendor tables, park information booth and environmental displays and crafts. All of the activities are free; an $8 vehicle use fee is in effect from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., unless you have the Empire Passport. Joining the Long Island State Park Region in supporting the Wildwood Fall Festival are the Natural Heritage Trust,

WBLI 106.1 FM, WBAB 102.3 FM, Lewin Farms, Bub’s Daddy and Drake Bakeries. For additional information, contact 631.321.3510, weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Weekends and/or day of event, please call Wildwood State Park, at 631.929.4314.

TOBAY Memorial The Town of Oyster Bay held its 9/11 Memorial Ceremony to honor the memory of those lost on September 11th, 2001 this past Friday. The ceremony, which included a candlelight vigil, religious readings and musical selections, was held at the Town’s Memorial at Tobay Beach. “What makes our memorial so meaningful is that it’s personal,” the Supervisor said. “The men and women whose names

are on the wall were our loved ones, our friends, our neighbors, our colleagues. They rode their bikes through our streets, swam at our beaches, and enjoyed our parks. They lived here.” The Town’s September 11th memorial is situated on the bayside of Tobay Beach, where there is a direct line of sight to where the Twin Towers once stood. “It provides a serene and peaceful surrounding,

making it a fitting backdrop for a place of remembrance,” the Supervisor said. The Town’s memorial monument is inscribed with the names of Town of Oyster Bay residents lost on September 11th, 2001. This year’s ceremony featured victims’ family members reading the names inscribed on the wall. The memorial also features a steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center.

Get Vaccinated. Vaccination is the best protection against contracting the flu. Everyone 6 months of age and older should get vaccinated against the flu as soon as the 2012-2013 season vaccine is available in your area. If you do contract the flu, talk to your doctor about antivirals. Antiviral drugs are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaler) that can be used for prevention or treatment of flu viruses. If you get sick, antiviral drugs can make your illness milder and make you feel better faster. Flu Facts: • The flu is caused by a virus called influenza • Flu is a contagious illness that is spread in droplets made by people when they talk, sneeze or cough. These droplets can then infect another person when they inhale them. • Less commonly, a person might also get flu by touching an object that has the flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or nose. • Once infected, you may pass the virus to others even about a day before you begin to have symptoms yourself. • Flu can cause a mild to severe illness and even death especially in the very young or old, pregnant woman or people with other medical illnesses (i.e.: asthma, diabetes) • The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year.

Q: What else can I do to prevent getting or spreading the flu? A: Here are some things you can do: • Get vaccinated! Ask your friends to get vaccinated. • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the garbage. • Stay away from people who are sick. • Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. • If someone in the house is sick, if possible, try to keep them in a separate area. • Keep surfaces like tables, sinks, counters and toys clean by wiping them down with a household disinfectant (follow instructions on the label).

Q: If I am concerned that vaccines cause autism, what is the harm of with holding vaccines? A: Autism is also common in countries where there are no vaccines. Your child may develop severe illness which is easily vaccine - preventable. I hope this helps you to better understand what the flu is and how you can protect yourself and your family from getting this illness. I wish you health and happiness. If I can be of further assistance, please let me know. Urszula K Rakowska, MD, FAAP, MBA, CPE Assistant Professor of Pediatric Emergency Medicine 631-864-7337 or gp@pediatricimmediatecare.com

Q: What are the Side Effects of the two vaccine types? A: Different side effects can be associated with the flu shot and nasal vaccine. The flu shot: You cannot get the flu from a flu shot. Some minor side effects that could occur are: Soreness, redness, or swelling at the site of injection, Low grade fever, Muscles aches .If they are going to occur at all, they begin soon after the vaccination and usually last 1 to 2 days. Almost all people who receive influenza vaccine have no problems from it. The nasal spray: The nasal-spray vaccine has weakened viruses and does not cause severe symptoms often associated with influenza illness. (In clinical studies, transmission of vaccine viruses to close contacts has occurred only rarely.) Side effects can include runny nose, wheezing, headache, Low grade fever, muscle aches, vomiting.

For More Information Call: 631-226-2636 - www.theneighbornewspapers.com

Q: What types of vaccinations are available? A: The two types of flu vaccines are: • The “flu shot”: an inactivated vaccine which contains killed virus that is given by injection. It is approved for use in people 6 months of age and older, including healthy people, people with chronic medical conditions and pregnant women. • The nasal spray flu vaccine: a vaccine made with live, but weakened flu virus that cannot cause the flu in a healthy person. This is approved for use in healthy people 2-49 years old (not pregnant)

Dear Readers,

For More Information Call: 631-226-2636 - www.theneighbornewspapers.com

Before I turn this column over to Dori Scofield, the Brookhaven Animal Shelter Superviser, I’m going to request that our Readers respond as quickly and as generously as they can. It’s going to take all of us to pitch in and help to heal these poor innocent souls. The 23 were used by their human owners in horrific and inhumane ways. Some were used as living “bait” to train the fighting dogs, their teeth filed down or their mouths strapped shut, unmercifly bitten and mauled. Their faces and bodies bare the visable scars; their hearts the invisible aching with longing for the love and homes they would never know. Others were used as breeders, living in small filthy cages - no human contact, no grassy fields to run in, no sweet fresh air or warm human touch. They bore litters of puppies sold to continue the cycle of cruelty. And then there are the fighting dogs, beaten and forced to act against their own sweet natures, prodded into tearing and killing. They were killed and discarded as garbage if they refused to fight. Readers, our combined communities of Nassau and Suffolk Counties need to pull together and make sure each and every one of these dogs has a “happily ever after.” There was evil living amoung us and it will take the good in all of us to make things right. Please read on for a glimpse of what Dori saw on the raid that saved 23 lives... “On September 9th, the Brookhaven Animal Shelter, along with the Suffolk County SPCA and Suffolk County Police Department,

confiscated 23 Pit Bulls from a deplorable home in Shirley, NY. Many of the dogs were stacked in rusted cages in a dark, very hot garage. All were living in their own feces and urine. Others were locked up in various rooms of the house with little or no ventilation, and the remainder lived outside in makeshift kennels. The stench could only be tolerated by a seasoned rescuer. There are few words to describe the expression in the eyes that stared back at us, unsure if we were friend or foe. After five hours of examining and removing the dogs, they were all brought back to The Brookhaven Animal Shelter to begin a new chapter in their lives. I’m sure many readers will cheer for their safety but please understand, they are but another 23 dogs added to the already overcrowded shelter. These dogs need homes desperately. Some are young, some are old, some are more beat up and scarred than others. But one thing is true... all are yearning for the love, companionship and a warm, cozy environment only a loving home can provide. Yes, we need money toward their medical care, blankets to keep them feeling secure, food to nourish their bodies, but more than anything, homes to nourish their souls. Most of the dogs are petite and all are sweet and submissive. I am asking everyone on Long Island to do something, one thing - small or large - for these dogs. Whether you can donate $1 toward the Help the Animals Fund or adopt one of these orphans, please do something. We are the voice of the voiceless... be a voice, change a life forever.”

www.htaf.org dscofield@brookhaven.org brookhaven.org/animalshelter 631.286.4940 300 Horseblock Rd. Brookhaven, NY 11719 Readers, if you have ever considered adopting a dog, please come forward and do it now. This is a crises situation; the shelter is overburdened and trying desperately to find each and every animal in its care a wonderful loving home. Beds, blankets, and food are needed and can be dropped off at the Brookhaven Shelter or, if more convienient, at Century 21AA Realty, 1596 Straight Path, corner of Wellwood Avenue in Lindenhurst. Marianne Lappas and her husband John will be making trips to the shelter to drop off donations, so ask for Marianne. A special shout out to the Suffolk County Police, the SPCA and the Brookhaven Animal Shelter Employees for a job well done. Readers, if you do adopt, please let me know and e-mail a picture or two so that all of us can share in the happiness.

Please visit a shelter and adopt. Remember, Your Best Friend Is Waiting...

“There is no known cause or cure for autism. Many treatments and therapies have surfaced since the disorder has grown more visible in the mainstream press, but reputable doctors have yet to agree on any that will reverse the diagnosis. The answer lies in additional research.” Now in its fifth year, The Town’s walk has help to spread the word about autism and help those inflicted with the condition. The event benefits the Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism, located in Bethpage, a dedicated satellite facility to North Shore LIJ-Hospital devoted to helping families obtain comprehensive assessments, family support and information on the latest research. Registration is $10 for individual walkers or $25 for a family (three or more walkers). Each registered

walker will receive a Tshirt and admission to the tailgate party. To sign up for the walk, register online at www.centerforautism.kint era.org, or call the Town of Oyster Bay’s Parks Department Recreation Office at 516.797.4125 extension 2. “I hope our residents will join us to take part in this charitable cause,” Councilman Pinto stated. “This event promises to be a day filled with fun for participants, but more importantly a day to help spread awareness and assist in the fight against autism.”

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Pinto announced that the Town will host its 5th Annual Walk for Autism to benefit the Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism & Developmental Disabilities. The event will be held rain or shine on Sunday, September 23rd, at John J. Burns Town Park, Merrick Road in Massapequa. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and the walk will begin at 11 a.m., followed by a tailgate party. “Autism is a complex neurobiological disorder that typically lasts throughout a person’s lifetime. Today, one in 88 individuals is diagnosed with autism. Only a few short years ago, the rate of diagnosis was one in 150, and this staggering statistic makes it the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the United States,” Councilman Pinto said.

In 1999, Mr. Breithut brought the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition (FRC) to Long Island, in which high school students work with their professional mentors to design a robot that solves a problem using a “kit of parts” and a standard set of rules. Once these young inventors create their 130-pound robots, their teams participate in regional competitions that measure the effectiveness of each robot, the power of collaboration and the determination of students. Pal-O-Mine Equestrian has received a $12,500 grant from The New York Community Bank Foundation in Roslyn, NY and a $1,500 grant from The WE CARE Fund of the Nassau County Bar Association in Mineola, NY. The donations will go towards funding for Pal-OMine’s Job Security Through Equine Partnerships (J-STEP) Program. The core objective of the J-STEP Program is to provide employment opportunities to adults with disabilities. Through the J-STEP Program and equine therapy, each participant is able to gain increased self-confidence and improved job skills to help them obtain employment in his or her community. In 2010, The New York Community Bank Foundation was one of the initial contributors of the J-STEP pilot run and the program has since been successful in implementing a recycling program, organic farming, and horticulture. With the support of local organizations like The New York Community Bank Foundation and The WE CARE Fund, J-STEP continues to help adults with disabilities progress into the workforce and to further develop a green living program and an energy conservation program at Pal-O-Mine. For more information about Pal-O-Mine Equestrian’s J-STEP Program or donating to Pal-O-Mine through either donations or services, please contact Pal-O-Mine at 631.348.1389 or visit www.pal-o-mine.org.

Suicide Awareness Walk Long Island Crisis Center (LICC) will hold its 4th Annual Let’s Walk, Let’s Talk…Stepping Together To Prevent Suicide event on Sunday, September 30th on the Boardwalk at Riverside Blvd. in Long Beach. Registration begins at 11 a.m. The Crisis Center, now in its 41st year, is

dedicated to increasing suicide awareness, educating everyone about the warning signs of suicide, and destigmatizing the subject of suicide and spreading the word that “it’s okay to ask for help.” “Recent statistics about suicide underscore the importance of the Crisis Center’s 24/7 hotline for

anyone to be able to access at critical times in their lives,” states Linda Leonard, Executive Director. “Our Walk is an opportunity for anyone who has been touched by suicide, either directly or indirectly, to talk openly about a subject that has, for too long, remained in the shadows.” Suicide and suicide

prevention affects everyone: · For the first time since 1998, suicide is in the top ten leading causes of death in the U.S.; · It is the third leading cause of death for adolescents 14 to 19 years of age; · It is the second leading cause of death for young adults 19 – 24 years of age;

· Elderly suicide rates are 50% higher than for young people; · One of every five suicides in the country is committed by a returning soldier from Iraq or Afghanistan – or once every 90 minutes; · For every suicide, there is an average of 13 suicide attempts; · 8 out of 10 people who

commit suicide tell someone first. On-site registration for the Walk begins at 11 a.m. Online registration is taking place right now at www.longislandcrisiscent er.org or call 516.826.0244 for more information. A minimum donation of $25 per person is suggested.

Taking A Bite Out Of Hunger September is National Hunger Awareness Month and Panera Bread is stepping up its support of Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, by holding its third annual “Take a Bite out of Hunger” food collection drive. From Monday, September 17th through Friday, September 21st, Panera Bread is “egging on” donations of non-

perishable food items to Island Harvest by providing guests who drop off one or more can or box before 11 a.m. with a free Grilled Breakfast Sandwich of their choice right on the spot. The offer is valid at all 22 Long Island Panera Bread bakery-cafes from September 17th through the 21st. “Last year, we grilled up over 3,000 free Grilled Breakfast Sandwiches and

collected over 2200 pounds of food to help Island Harvest provide critical food support for Long Island’s hungry,” said Greg George, Vice President of Operations for Doherty Enterprises, franchisee for the Long Island Panera Bread bakery-cafes. “Year round we package up and donate the bread, bagels, and pastries that remain on our shelves at end of the day to help Island Harvest.

During ‘Take a Bite out of Hunger,’ we invite our guests to help, too with canned goods and other non-perishables.” “For over a decade, Panera Bread has been a valued partner helping Island Harvest address the critical issue of hunger right here on Long Island,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest. “Panera’s generosity, along with that of their

guests, has helped make a positive impact among the 285,000 men, women and children in our communities who know the effects of hunger firsthand - and, for that we are grateful.” Panera Bread hopes to collect more than a ton of food at its Long Island cafes and is encouraging food donations by providing each donor with a nutritious hot Grilled Breakfast Sandwich

during its “Take a Bite out of Hunger” campaign to benefit Island Harvest from September 17th21st.

Having Your Say On Medicare And Social Security

(NAPSI)—Medicare and Social Security are the foundation of retirement security for millions of American workers. But these vital programs face challenges in the coming years, and the next president and Congress could make decisions about them that might affect you. Why are these programs so important? The typical retiree on Medicare and Social Security has an income of only $20,000 and must devote nearly 20 percent of that for out-of-pocket health care costs that Medicare doesn’t cover. Social Security is currently the principal source of income for nearly two-thirds of older American households, and Medicare provides health coverage for nearly all seniors. Many who are not yet retired are struggling

with lost pensions and savings, lower home values and higher health care costs. They may not be thinking about Medicare and Social Security today, but it is likely the guaranteed benefits of these programs will be critical to their health and retirement security. Yet for the last year, politicians in Washington have been meeting behind closed doors to discuss changes to Medicare and Social Security, without the input of people who could be affected by their decisions. AARP recently launched You’ve Earned a Say, a national conversation to ensure that Americans’ voices are heard in the discussion through questionnaires, c o m m u n i t y conversations, town hall meetings, online forums

and other events. You’ve Earned a Say will provide information about the major proposals that Washington has put on the table, both the pros and cons, without all the political jargon and spin. Americans deserve to have the facts, so they can tell politicians what they think should be done to strengthen these programs. Making sure your voice is heard in Washington may be the best way to protect Medicare and Social Security for generations to come. Most Americans pay into these programs throughout their working lives and have earned the right to be heard. To make your voice heard and learn more about You’ve Earned a Say, go to www.earnedasay.org. Or you can call (888) OURAARP

Scinocco has been chosen to receive the first Alexander P. Fletcher Navy Student Award presented by the World Campus. “I’m beyond honored to be the first recipient of the Fletcher Navy Student Award,” said Scinocco, who is enrolled in the online bachelor of arts degree in psychology. “I’m putting the award to good use buying my books this semester.” This award honors and recognizes outstanding academic achievement by an undergraduate World Campus student who has a naval background. Scinocco, 34, lives in Hicksville, N.Y., on Long Island. He enlisted in the Navy in 1996 and was one of only 618 SWCCs. He

held the rank of petty officer second class at his discharge in 2001. In 2003, he was recalled to serve in Iraq. He previously worked at Newsday, becoming a top advertising salesman, before deciding to pursue a medical career. After taking pre-medicine courses at Hofstra University, he chose to enroll in Penn State's World Campus. “Learning online is a good match for me, because I’m pretty selfdisciplined,” Scinocco said. He also is inspired by this Salvador Dali quote: “Intelligence without ambition is a bird without wings.”

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program is urging women to get mammograms. “October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a significant time to remind women to be proactive about their health and get mammograms,” says Hillary Rutter, the director of the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program “Often women will put

their own health on hold as they take care of family members; we want send out the message that when you take care of yourself, you’re taking care of your family.” For more information and to locate an accredited mammography facility nearby, call the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program at 800.877.8077. Callers can also get emotional support

from the hotline’s specially trained volunteers, most of who are women who have had breast cancer. Memorial Proposal A Memorial has been proposed to honor the men and women of Hicksville who served in the Armed Forces or Coast Guard, anywhere in the world, during the Vietnam War Era. Permission is being sought for the Memorial to stand on the grounds of the Hicksville Middle School, alongside the existing Memorials from other eras. An effort is being made to contact the veterans who qualify to be on the Memorial. The qualifications are: 1. Must have been a resident of Hicksville at some time before entering our Armed Forces. 2. Must have attended a public, private or parochial high school

while living in Hicksville (attendance at Hicksville High School not required). 3. Must have served on active duty anywhere in the world during America’s Vietnam War Era (February, 1961 through April, 1975). 4. Both men and women qualify. Although the final decision has not yet been made as to which information will appear on the plaques, it is requested that veterans submit their branch, theater, what years they served, what high school they attended and their high school class year. Fun Fall Activities

GOING FOR THE GOLD - In support of the Doherty Enterprises Inc.’s WOW a Friend Foundation, which raises money through voluntary contributions by its employees, 400 Applebee’s and Panera Bread restaurant staff from Long Island and New Jersey descended on the Calhoun High School gymnasium for a showdown of Olympic proportions. Fifty-one teams faced off in a volleyball tournament that helped raise more than $5,700 - funds that will be earmarked to help fellow employees hit by financial hardship due to a natural disaster, illness or other loss.

Don’t Stay Idle Long periods of time spent sitting idly can increase your risk of developing blood clots in

the legs, a potentially fatal condition known as deepvein thrombosis (DVT). Simple and short exercises

With requests for food assistance at an all-time high on Long Island, food pantries and soup kitchen are not only struggling to keep up with increased demand, but many are in need of suitable equipment to properly store perishable and frozen foods. Thanks to a $25,000 grant by the Long Island Community Foundation made to Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, much needed help is on the way. The grant was used to purchase 14 refrigerators, 12 freezers, six shelving units and 26 coolers for 45 of Island Harvest’s member agencies that serve over 10,000 people from the very youngest to our senior most citizens every month. Island Harvest’s agency clients will benefit from consistent provision of

quality fresh, perishable, and frozen products, while giving them a wider choice of food and healthier options, such as fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, poultry and dairy products. One beneficiary agency, Copiague-based Circle of Love Ministry, serves over 1,200 people each month. Additional freezer and refrigeration capacity will allow the nondenominational organization be able to store more food and, consequently, give more to people who need food assistance. Other recipient agencies include the Salvation Army and KoLoKi in Freeport. Much of the equipment replaces outdated, inefficient freezers and refrigerators giving agencies the added benefit of realizing cost and energy savings by using more energy-

efficient models. Coolers were distributed to member agencies that collect food at Island Harvest’s central distributions enabling them to safely transport fresh, perishable and frozen product to their facilities. Funding for the LICF grant was made possible, in part, by the Greentree Foundation Fund and the Col. William Smith Fund. Since 1978 LICF has been making grants to improve our region and guide donors with their philanthropic endeavors. More than $130 million has been granted from hundreds of funds established by individuals, families, and businesses. LICF is a division of The New York Community Trust, one of the country’s oldest and largest community foundations.

Easy Tiling Ideas (NAPSI)—Renovations don’t have to be costly, messy and time consuming. There are ways to avoid the headaches often associated with home upgrades. Tiles are a great way to add a punch of personality to your home and many tiling projects can be completed in just one day. With a few tools and some elbow grease, you can breathe new life and flair into any room. Get creative inspiration with simple tiling projects you can use to liven up your home: 1. Call attention to one

wall of a room with a bold tile accent. Be daring with patterns, or make it modern with subway tiles. 2. Tile the kitchen backsplash to add color and protect the wall from cooking messes. Bondera TileMatSet, a doublesided, peel- and-stick tiling adhesive is a great tool to use instead of mortar and mastic, eliminating the mess and allowing you to grout immediately after positioning the tiles. 3. Modernize old trivets by using the tile adhesive to create a custom tiled pattern that pops against

tableware. 4. Explore your creative side by designing a charming tile pattern on an old tabletop, which will add pizzazz to lunches and evening drinks. For more on these and similar projects, visit www.bonderatilematset.co m.

Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities on Long Island, is recognizing its Direct Support Professionals for a job well done. DDI is celebrating the Direct Support Professionals Recognition Week by taking notice of the enormous contributions their employees make on a daily basis to improve the lives of people with disabilities by helping them to lead their lives as independently as possible. DDI will spend the week with a variety of different events to thank its Direct Support Professionals (DSP). DSP workers will enjoy all sorts of fun giveaways including polo shirts while hosting a

variety of friendly competitions including basketball shoot out, archery, trivia and various wii game competitions. DDI Executive Director John Lessard will be getting in on the fun by rolling up his sleeves to say thanks. Mr. Lessard along with fellow DDI executives will be kicking off a barbeque by washing vehicles for many of DDI’s DSP workers. The National Alliance For Direct Support Professionals (NADSP) has joined with the American Network of Community Options and Resources (ANCOR) in sponsoring National Direct Support Professional Recognition Week, beginning September 9th. The goal of the week is to recognize the dedication and vital role of direct support professionals in

enhancing the lives of individuals with disabilities of all ages and appreciates their contribution in supporting the needs that reach beyond the capacities of millions of families in the United States. “DDI could not contribute to improving the lives of the 5,000 children and adults we serve with autism and other developmental disabilities without our Direct Support Professionals,” stated John Lessard, DDI’s Executive Director. “Our Direct Support Professionals play a vital role in supporting the mission of DDI and we can never thank them enough for their compassion and their commitment that is so evident in the work they perform.”

In addition, participating carriers have agreed to implement and deploy databases to prevent thieves from reactivating stolen smartphones in the U.S.

ammonia—based products-or cleaners containing vinegar, lemon or orange—on your granite countertops. Avoid abrasive cleaners such as dry or soft cleansers. Don’t use cleaning products that contain acid such as bathroom, grout, or tub and tile cleaners. Specialty granite cleaners can be used, but they can be expensive. There’s a way to stretch your dollars. • Mind your budget: JAWS Glass & Hard Surface Cleaner (www.jawscleans.com) cleans granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, glass and even your flat-screen TV. It’s also non-toxic and costs less than most other cleaners because each

JAWS product is actually two bottles in one. (The cartridge refill is attached to the bottle.) There are also some other basic preventive measures you can take to protect your granite countertops: • Use coasters: Place a coaster under all glasses, particularly those containing alcohol or citrus juices that can etch or dull the surface of many stone countertops. • Use trivets or mats: They’ll protect your granite countertop from hot dishes and help avoid scratches. Granite countertops can really add spark to a kitchen or bathroom. Proper care will keep them looking beautiful.

(631) 416-9502

(NAPSI)—Granite countertops are the most popular option available when it comes to kitchen or bathroom remodeling. They look great, they’re durable, but they can also cost thousands of dollars. Granite requires special care and attention because it’s a natural stone. Here are a few tips to help you protect your investment: • Seal your countertops: According to the Marble Institute of America, an industry group, granite countertops should be sealed so that the stone is more resistant to dirt and spills. Check with the manufacturer or retailer about the best kind of sealer to use on food preparation areas. • Be careful what you clean with: Never use

professionals such as doctors, nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, dentists and pharmacists can help smokers by bringing up the subject with patients. To assist with that, Legacy and Pfizer have developed a downloadable, userfriendly guide for health care providers to help them discuss smoking and tobacco use with their patients. Here are hints to help: • Talk openly about smoking. Ask every patient if they smoke. This may open the door to successful intervention. • Be positive and encouraging. Smokers are often dealing with shame or fear of quitting. Congratulate the smoker on the decision to quit and reiterate how you are there to help them on their journey. • Encourage smokers not to give up. Smoking is a chronic, relapsing medical condition; the average smoker tries to quit 6/9 times in their lifetime. Remind smokers

that quitting is difficult, but can be attainable. • Make sure smokers understand smoking for what it really is: a treatable medical condition. • Suggest patients consider evidence-based treatments, such as overthe-counter or prescription medications, and refer them to counseling to help them quit. Patients can call the national toll-free quitline, (800)-QUIT-NOW, for free counseling or seek help from no-cost websites such as www.BecomeAnEX.org. • Arrange follow-up contact as necessary to try to prevent relapse. More than 45 million Americans currently smoke and an estimated 70 percent of them want to quit, but lack the tools to do so. Committing to quit is the crucial first step toward becoming smoke free. Speaking with your health care provider can help you during this process.

Avoiding Tax Relief Scams (NAPSI)-If you owe back taxes and don’t know how you will pay the IRS, it may seem like a company that promises to significantly reduce your tax bill has the answer to your problems. Not so fast. You could end up deeper in debt. According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation’s consumer protection agency, tax relief companies use the radio, TV and Internet to advertise help for taxpayers in distress. These companies claim that for an up-front fee, which can be thousands of dollars, they can reduce or even eliminate your tax debts and stop back-tax collection by applying for legitimate IRS hardship programs. The truth is that most taxpayers don’t qualify for such programs, the companies don’t settle

the tax debt and, in many cases, don’t even send the necessary paperwork to the IRS. Adding insult to injury, some of these companies don’t provide refunds and leave people even further in debt. Some taxpayers who filed complaints with the FTC reported that, after signing up with some of these companies and paying thousands of dollars in up-front fees, the companies took more of their money by making unauthorized charges to their credit cards or withdrawals from their bank accounts. Taxpayer Tips If you owe back taxes and are having trouble meeting your tax obligation: • Read your notices from the IRS. Ask about collection alternatives. Contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service, an i n d e p e n d e n t

organization within the IRS that provides free help to people who are experiencing financial difficulties or who need help resolving a problem with the IRS. Call 1-877777-4778 or visit www.irs.gov/advocate. • Save yourself some aggravation and ignore promises from companies that say you are “qualified” or “eligible” for a tax relief program to resolve your tax debt. Only the IRS can make that determination. The FTC has free materials about dealing with debt and other money management issues at www.ftc.gov/moneymatte rs. To file a complaint or get free information on consumer issues, visit www.ftc.gov or call, tollfree, 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357); TTY: 1-866-653-4261.

(NAPSI)—To help protect you and your family from tobaccorelated death and disease, researchers from Legacy®, a national public health organization dedicated to building a world where anyone can quit smoking, recommend two actions: stop smoking or never start. If you do smoke or use tobacco, speak to your doctor about quitting smoking. A survey of more than 3,146 adults in the U.S. conducted by Legacy discovered that more than one in 10 smokers have concealed their smoking status from a health care provider— nearly half of them stated it was because they are ashamed that they smoke. Another reason for not disclosing this important information to a medical professional: two-thirds surveyed who did not disclose their smoking status reported not wanting to be lectured about smoking. Fortunately, health care
