enny Brown completed his Eagle Scout Project recently at the A. Holly Patterson Extended Care Facility. Kenny and the scouts from Troop 382 of Hicksville built three picnic tables for the picnic area on the grounds of the nursing home. The tables are six feet long with smaller benches to make them wheelchair accessible on the ends. Kenny began his project in June when he planted the garden at the far end of the courtyard.

This is three year-old Dharma. She is one of the rescued dogs I wrote about last week, and her story breaks my heart. Dharma’s ear has been badly ripped (healing now), her face is scarred and bares witness to the unspeakably cruel life she has led. Apparently, she was used as bait to train the fighting dogs. Perhaps she was chosen because she is petite (only 36 lbs), demure and sweet. Despite the unthinkable cruelty that she has suffered at the hands of man, she loves people. She is truly a special soul and deserves to be in a loving home with people who will cherish her and return the love she is so anxious to give. To quote Brookhaven Animal Shelter director Dori Scofield, “She forgives the humans who mistreated her. After all, dogs are most forgiving creatures. They put us humans to shame.” Dharma is all gentleness and loves to give kisses. You can see the sweetness of her soul shinning in her bright eyes. Unfortunately, Dharma has been bitten and attacked by the fighting dogs in training so many times that she must be the only dog in the household. Readers, can you give Dharma the opportunity to live the kind of life that she deserves to have? Her suffering has touched me deeply. Please call the Brookhaven Animal Shelter at 631.286.4940 and consider opening your hearts and home to this gentle loving girl. I would love to hear from the special person who adopts Dharma.

Oyster Bay Receiver of Taxes James J. Stefanich notifies residents that the 2012 General Tax Collection Warrant has been closed, and all related records have been turned over to the Nassau County Treasurer. The original warrant specified that $495,015,137.15 was to be collected to support Nassau County, Town of Oyster Bay, and special tax districts. Assessment
reductions and tax cancellations amounted to $1,044,601.23 (0.2%). Nassau County was paid $252,947,755.43 (51%) from the collection. The Town of Oyster Bay was paid $88,111,149.43 (18%), and the special tax districts were paid $142,767,148.25 (29%). A list of delinquent property payments was reported to the County Treasurer, amounting to $10,144,482.81 (2%).
Property owners with delinquent taxes would be contacted by the Nassau County Treasurer’s office,” Receiver Stefanich said. “Owners will be receiving letters specifying taxes owed along with applicable penalties and late payment fees.” The 2012-2013 School Tax levy bill printing will commence on October 1st, and mailing will start in early October. Receiver Stefanich asks property
owners to be patient when calling the Tax Office for information on property taxes due to the usual high volume of calls received at the beginning of a new tax collection. Residents are requested to have the school district, section, block and lot numbers of the property in question available. This information is listed on the tax bill and on the property deed.

George urges businesses, organizations and individuals to call their local Panera bakery now to reserve Pink Ribbon Bagels for October 1st. According to George, every Pink Ribbon Bagel or baker’s dozen of 13 Pink Ribbon Bagels sold that day or preordered for pickup on October 1st will provide a 100% donation to the designated breast cancer organizations. On POWER OF PINK DAY, Panera will contribute $1.25 for each bagel, $9.99 for each baker’s dozen. For those who have yet to taste a Pink Ribbon Bagel, it’s a Cherry Vanilla Bagel--a brown-sugar sweetened, wholesome cranberry-cherry chip bagel—that is shaped into iconic “pink ribbons” as a symbol of hope in support of local breast cancer help organizations. WALK 97.5’s Linda Healy, herself a breast cancer survivor, spearheads the radio station’s breast cancer advocacy efforts and reminds us that POWER OF PINK DAY provides the perfect excuse to plan a bagel party at work or with friends on October 1st. Throughout the remainder of October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, each Long Island bakery-cafe will continue to contribute by donating 25 cents from every Pink Ribbon Bagel sold as well as $1.00 from each and every Power of Pink Baker’s Dozen - any assortment of 13 bagels that is sold that month. Last year, in partnership with WALK 97.5, Panera Bread’s Pink Ribbon Bagel campaign raised more than $26,000 over the course of the month-long

Hillary Rutter, the director of the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, recently announced that her program will be a recipient in the 11th Annual Panera Bread 2012 Pink Ribbon Bagels campaign. The Pink Ribbon Bagel campaign, to date, has raised well over $100,000 to benefit Long Island breast cancer organizations. In addition to the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program, Pink Ribbon Campaign funds will be donated to Prevention Is the Cure and the Breast Cancer Research Program at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Panera Bread, in partnership with WALK 97.5 who is getting the word out, will donate 25 cents for every Pink Ribbon Bagel sold in its 22 Long Island bakery-cafes. “The initiative continues to grow each year,” says Greg George, Vice President of Operations for Doherty Enterprises, Inc., franchisee for Panera Bread. “WALK 97.5 makes a big push in the fall to educate and inform listeners about breast cancer prevention, screening and treatment.” He adds, “WALK Radio brings awareness and Panera brings the funds to help sustain critical groups here on Long Island.” To give the fundraising a healthy head start, Panera is kicking off its campaign with POWER OF PINK DAY on Monday, October 1st, more than quadrupling its donation by contributing 100% from each bagel sold to the fund.

(NAPSI)—With a flood of real estate listings on the market, sellers continuously search for ways to stand out. The process is called staging. Done correctly, it can make a house look bigger, brighter, cleaner, warmer and make homebuyers want to buy it. To help, here are some tips: • Curb Appeal: The exterior of the house is the first thing potential buyers see; make sure it’s bright, clean and inviting. • Clean: Clean from top to bottom, getting rid of clutter and organizing the space. Don’t forget the ceilings and fans. • Brighten Up: Do what you can to help buyers envision living in the space. Make sure windows are streak free. Hide personal pictures. Instead, decorate with fresh flowers. • Living Space: Choose neutral tones for the walls and furniture. Slipcovers are

In ignorance our acts do sometimes undo what love and caring took long to accrue We learn from no teacher or books from any shelf to think, act or feel like another, just ourselves It is for this reason misunderstandings will arise that influence our judgment and cloud up our eyes When we stare into a mirror and look upon our face we should examine it deeply like a telescope through space

We view the faults of others so easily some days that we fail to see ourselves in the shortcomings of their ways With the knowledge of how our thoughts create actions, we are enlightened our lives become simplified our love becomes heightened We are spirits here to grow in loving wisdom from our birth and God gave us each other to ease this passage through earth

This year, Beach Cleanup 2012 was held on Saturday, September 15th, at Robert Moses State Park, Field #2 from 10 a.m. until 12 noon. Hundreds of volunteers combed the beaches and collected over 2000 pounds of debris. For the 26th year, Beach Cleanup 2012 was another big success! “Thank you to everyone who came out for Beach Cleanup 2012,” Senator Johnson said. “We had a wonderful response again this year. Our 345 volunteers gathered a ton of garbage from the beach and helped raise awareness about the harmful effects of littering
and dumping on our shores. Thanks also to all who brought along donations for our local food pantries.” The data collected from the Beach Cleanup will be compiled by the American Littoral Society and sent to the Ocean conservancy in Washington, D.C., where it will be analyzed and compared with data from around the world. The information is used to develop national and international programs and policies to control debris so that our beaches will remain clean and safe. It is also used by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to evaluate
the effectiveness of existing laws and programs to prevent debris from washing up in the first place. The Long Island Beach Buggy Association and the Long Island State Park Region cosponsored the event. Numerous c o n s e r v a t i o n organizations, sportsmen’s groups, and Girl Scout and Boy Scout Troops from our area participated. This year at the Beach Cleanup, non-perishable food items were collected to donate to the local food pantries where supplies have been badly depleted.

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joseph D. Muscarella invites residents to attend the Town’s 33rd Annual All Car Friendship Meet, scheduled for Sunday, October 7th, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will be held rain or shine. “Since their invention, cars have had a unique ability to bond people together,” Councilman Muscarella said. “Enthusiasts appreciate the aesthetic beauty of automobiles, as well as their distinct history.” Councilman Muscarella noted that reminiscing about the family’s automobiles or dad’s favorite sports car, is an unmistakable component of Americana. “When attending events like the Town’s All Car
Friendship Meet, conversations invariably center upon vacations spent driving in the family vehicle or the muscle car they drove as a senior in high school,” Councilman Muscarella said. “The Town is proud to host events like this because they unite participants on common ground and create last friendships.” The Town of Oyster Bay Department of Parks, Division of Recreation, is hosting this event, which is being co-sponsored by Sun Auto Group, at Marjorie R. Post Community Park, Merrick and Unqua Roads, Massapequa. It is a great event for car owners and car admirers, with free admission, breakfast provided by Sun Auto Group and lunch provided

by the Town. Councilman Muscarella noted that this is a nontrophy meet. All vehicles must have valid registration and plates and must be driven by the owner. The event features vintage automobiles dating back to 1927 and is supported by All Car Club in Oyster Bay. “The Town’s All Car Friendship Meet is always a great family day at Marjorie R Post Community Park,” Councilman Muscarella said. “I invite all car owners and car enthusiasts to come to the park. Casting Away Of Sins
More than 100 members and friends of the Plainview Jewish Center headed to the beautiful waters of Cold Spring Harbor for a special Tashlich ceremony. Tashlich means “casting off” and the ritual included throwing bread into the water to dismiss
sins. Just as the water carries away the bread, so too are sins carried away. The ceremony is often held shortly after Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, to start the new year with a clean slate. The name Tashlich and the ceremony are from the biblical passage “You will
cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.” The symbolic ceremony included special readings and songs, was led by Rabbi Steven Conn and Cantor Morris Wolk, spiritual leaders of Plainview Jewish Center. Photo courtesy of: Carol Hauser
for the History of Medicine and Public Health in 2012. “Only by knowing our past in medicine will we be able to develop new innovations in the future,” said Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, MACP, Senior Vice President for the Health Sciences and Dean, School of Medicine. “The displays in the exhibit are a teaching tool to understanding a timeline of progress for medical practice in areas such as treating trauma and injuries, infectious diseases, and common illnesses that have affected people for many generations.” “This new exhibit underscores the continued importance of libraries in the University’s academic and research missions,” said Andrew White, PhD, Interim Dean of Libraries, Stony Brook University Libraries. “Even in today’s technology driven information age, libraries continue to play a longstanding role in collecting information about both the past and present. It is equally important for Stony Brook as Long Island’s largest research library to preserve such unique collections, which are also examples of primary

source information, whether printed, digital, or physical items like in this exhibit.” “We are very happy to work with Stony Brook so that students and the community can step back into the past and get a stronger sense of what instruments were used in the practice of medicine many years ago,” said Kathryn Curran, Director, Suffolk County Historical Society. “My father began collecting medical instruments in the early 1960s, and he quickly saw the value in keeping these so that young people would be educated by seeing medical instruments used in the past,” said Barbara Russell, daughter of Dr. Mills and Brookhaven Town Historian. “He would be happy to know that what started out as a small collection has grown into something large that can educate many,” added Russell, speaking about her father, who continued collecting medical instruments until his death in 2009. “The medical instruments and objects exhibited are a visual presentation of the timeless challenges of treating illness and injury,” explained Carla C. Keirns, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Preventive Medicine, and Medicine & History, Stony Brook University School of Medicine, and one of the curators of the exhibit. “As a whole the objects indicate the similarities and differences in the ways doctors have treated illness and injury for more than a century.” The exhibit features three primary glass displays. Each display is organized by a single history of medicine theme. These themes are: Visiting Doctors, Diptheria and Whooping Cough (Pertussis), and Hazards of the Job.
Dr Keirns pointed out that until the beginning of the 20th Century, health care from birth to death generally happened at home, even surgery and especially childbirth. The Visiting Doctors display features items like an umbilical scissors (circa 1940s), a metal either mask (circa late 1800s), and Dr. R. Sherman Mills’ doctor’s bag, which he used for house calls into the 1980s. Late 19th and early 20th Century medical instruments used to treat infectious diseases and exhibited in the Diptheria and Whooping Cough display are powerful reminders of the dangers of diseases such as diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), tuberculosis, and influenza a century ago. Thousands of children died of diphtheria and pertussis each year during the early decades of the 20th Century, Tuberculosis remained the leading cause of death in the United States through the 1920s, and the influenza pandemic killed as many as 100 million people worldwide in 1918 and 1919. The emergence of the germ theory of disease that proved microorganisms cause infectious diseases, the development of microscopes to identify and study microorganisms, and the creation of effective vaccines changed the landscape of infectious disease practice within the past century. Dr. Keirns said that these advances evolved into a new emphasis on preventing infectious diseases. Items in the display such as a diphtheria kit (circa 1920s) and a vapocresolene lamp (circa 1880s) used to treat whooping cough and other throat ailments are instruments no longer in use.
The Hazards of the Job display shows what tools doctors used in trauma medicine before emergency rooms and EMT teams became a routine part of medical practice during the 20th Century. On Long Island, the workplace environment in the 1800s and part of the 1900s posed serious risk for injury in industries such ship building, maritime work, oystering and fishing, agriculture and manufacturing. Accidents such as a fall from a horse-drawn wagon or a serious laceration to a limb at the work place often led to amputation. Dr. Keirns said that changing technologies, work patterns, and improved medical practices made loss of limbs and death from accidents much less common over time. An illustration of this progress is exhibited by a surgical saw that was used into the 1980s for amputations, in contrast with a 21st Century fixator that trauma surgeons at Stony Brook University Hospital routinely use to save limbs. Some items in the displays indicate the similarities of certain medical practices decades ago to today’s practices. Objects like a reflex hammer (circa 1960s), Red Cross gauze (circa 1950s-60s), and a German made blood pressure kit from World War I are nearly the same or precursors of today’s instruments used in the delivery of care. Over the next three years, the Stony Brook University Libraries, Stony Brook Medicine, and Suffolk County Historical Society will jointly present additional themed exhibits of “Healthcare Instruments Past and Present.”

Suffolk County Historical Society to create an experience that benefits everyone,” said Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, President of Stony Brook University. “Thanks to the family of Dr. Mills and the Suffolk County Historical Society, Stony Brook has the opportunity to feature displays that clearly show how far we have progressed in medicine. By experiencing this exhibit, students and practitioners alike are able to put Stony Brook’s advanced and cuttingedge medical practices into perspective.” “ H e a l t h c a r e Instruments - Past and Present” is in keeping with an academic medicine trend to showcase centuries-old medical instruments to expand the understanding and educate students on the history of medicine and the health sciences. Major medical research organizations also promote the professional knowledge and public understanding of the history of healthcare practices through exhibits or archives. For example, the National Institutes of Health includes an educational arm on the History of Medicine, and the New York Academy of Medicine opened a Center

A new exhibit at the Stony Brook University Health Sciences Library that displays medical instruments and objects from the mid-1800s to the 1980s illustrates the evolution of modern medicine. A concept initiated by the Suffolk County Historical Society, Healthcare Instruments – Past and Present was developed in partnership with the Stony Brook University Libraries and Stony Brook Medicine. The exhibit showcases instruments from the collection of the late Dr. R.Sherman Mills of Setauket, a family physician on Long Island who practiced medicine from the 1940s to early 1980s. The exhibit opened September 13th, and will be on display for the entire 2012-2013 academic year. Currently 40 medical instruments from Dr. Mills’ collection are featured in the Stony Brook exhibit, which is the first in a series of displays at the Health Sciences Library. All of the instruments were donated by the Mills family to the Suffolk County Historical Society. “This exhibit is a wonderful example of how Stony Brook University partners with community organizations like the

The Town of Oyster Bay will host the second annual “All-Star Game” for the members of the Long Island Senior Softball Association’s (LISSA) Division 5 at John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa on Monday, October 1st, at 6:15 p.m. According to Town
Councilman Anthony Macagnone, the game will square off two 15-member teams, who average 76 years of age and feature the top players from Division 5 teams. Admission to the game is free. “The Long Island Senior Softball Association
Division 5 is comprised of a truly remarkable group of people,” Councilman Macagnone said. “What spectators often don’t realize is that many of these players have undergone some sort of life-altering medical procedure, whether it be a joint-replacement or
cardiac procedure, at some point in their lifetime.” For those interested in obtaining more information about LISSA, and especially for those looking to register and participate in future games for the league, contact Joe Friedman,

softball team that utilizes a ball that beeps and bases that buzz, will compete. “It is quite impressive to see the Bombers in action,” Friese said. “They are a dedicated group of baseball enthusiasts from the Long Island and tristate area. They just happen to be blind and visually impaired. They hold rigorous practices, instructional clinics and play exhibition and competitive games against sighted and other visually impaired teams in the metropolitan area.” Supervisor Venditto indicated that the Town’s long history of supporting Challenger Baseball was a strong factor in being selected to host the 2012 Long Island Challenger Baseball Jamboree. “There’s no question of our commitment to youngsters with special needs,” Supervisor Venditto said. “We’re proud to host the Jamboree, but more importantly, we are proud of the youngsters who will participate. They’re ability to overcome obstacles in the pursuit of their dreams is an inspiration to us all.”

Long Island Cruizin’ For A Cure 2012, the only car show on the East Coast to provide free on-site PSA testing for the early detection of prostate cancer and to promote prostate cancer awareness and education, was held on Sunday, September 9th, in Hicksville, at the Sears Auto Center parking lot. A record 3,000 people attended the nonprofit group’s seventh car show to see 500 cars and other vehicles exhibited. The proceeds from the car shows are used to fund PSA screening tests at the shows and at corporate Long Island locations, to promote public education programs and to sponsor prostate cancer research. Sandy Kane, the founder and Chair of LI Cruizin’ For A Cure, presented a $10,000 check to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory scientists at this year’s show. The funds will be used to support ongoing research projects, bringing the total donation to the laboratory for 2012 to $20,000. James Hicks, the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory scientist who leads research focused on single cell cancer analysis thanked the crowd for their support and declared, “I’ve been a car guy my whole life. In fact I still have the Jaguar XK140 Roadster that I bought when I was 18, so I can’t imagine a better venue for raising money for our prostate cancer research. While our goal is to develop a much more accurate test to determine
the seriousness of high PSA levels, I can’t agree with Sandy more about how important it is, in the meantime, for men to get tested early, and to continue getting tested regularly to establish a benchmark to guide future diagnoses. It’s the change in PSA, not just the level that is the warning sign.” Dr. Hicks is Dr. Lloyd Trotman who is collaborating with Dr. Hicks, recently stated that “Sandy Kane and LI Cruizin’ are doing something really amazing in the fight against prostate cancer. They educate and succeed in getting men tested for this disease and at the same time make a solid investment toward the next generation of cancer detection. Their support helps us develop the genetic analysis that will identify the few men who have life-threatening disease among the many who don’t need major intervention.” At the show, the North Shore LIJ Health System provided free on-site PSA blood-screening tests to men over 40, and 307 men took advantage of the lifesaving opportunity. After test results are completed, any men with elevated readings are referred to their physicians for follow-up. During the day many prostate cancer survivors, wearing blue LI Cruizin’ tees, circulated in the crowd to encourage men to have the bloodscreening test and to answer their questions.
“We had very high expectations for our seventh car show, and we achieved our goals including our main objective to provide hundreds of free prostate screening PSA tests. It was a magnificent day for our exhibitors, visitors, vendors and sponsors: our lead sponsor All State Insurance (lead sponsor), PlyCon Group Auto Transport, Rallye Motors, King Quality Construction, Robert Chevrolet, Biener Audi and Health Care Answering Service/Fiore. “The tent in which the PSA tests were conducted was busy all day. This was our second year at the Sears Automotive Center location, which was ideal for our event. All our volunteers, many whom are prostate cancer survivors like me, put forth a tremendous effort to make the show a giant success. The volunteer committee is already planning for the next show. We promise to have some outstanding new features to make the 2013 event even more exciting,” said Sandy Kane, Chair. to facilitate access onto the field and nearby restroom access. The league enables boys and girls with physical and mental challenges, ages 418, or up to age 22 if still enrolled in high school, to enjoy the game of baseball along with the millions of other children who participate in this sport worldwide. Today, more than 30,000 children participate in more than 900 Challenger Divisions worldwide. Teams are set up according to abilities, rather than age, and can include as many as 15-20 players. Challenger games can be played as tee ball games, coach pitch, player pitch, or a combination of the three. According to Al Friese, Commissioner of the Massapequa Coast Little League's Challenger Division, "Buddies" are utilized for the benefit of Challenger players. “The buddies assist the Challenger players on the field, but whenever possible, encourage the players to bat and make plays themselves,” Friese said. “However, the buddy is always nearby to help when needed. Parents and teenagers are frequently asked to be ‘buddies’ and find the experience to be uniquely-rewarding.” After completing a Little League volunteer application and passing a required national background check, teenagers may become buddies, while parents may become involved in practices, and be eligible as coaches, managers, umpires, local league board members and other volunteer positions within the league. According to Friese, approximately 25 teams from all over Long Island are expected to participate in the Jamboree. There will also be games, inflatable rides and food for everyone in attendance. The Town of Oyster Bay will host the 2012 Long Island Challenger Baseball Jamboree at its Challenger Baseball Field located at John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa on Saturday, October 7th, according to Town Supervisor John Venditto. The widely acclaimed event will be a full day of fun for all in attendance, beginning at 9:30 a.m. with registration and concluding at 4 p.m. with a closing ceremony. “We consider it quite an honor to host this prestigious event at our beautiful Challenger Field,” Supervisor Venditto said. “In addition to providing an awesome experience for the players and their families, the event also builds awareness to advancing Challenger Baseball.” Supervisor Venditto noted that Challenger Baseball League participants, some of whom have cerebral palsy, autism or are wheelchair bound, are able to focus upon their abilities rather than their limitations. “Once they put the league uniform on, they’re all ball players,” Supervisor Venditto said. “It’s a beautiful thing for both the youngsters and their parents.” Challenger Baseball is a Little League-sanctioned program established in 1989 that gives physically and mentally challenged children the opportunity to play baseball in an environment structured to their abilities. The Town created a dedicated field to meet the special needs of the players with such features as synthetic FieldTurf, which offers a stable, uniform and shockabsorbing playing surface. The turf has the bases and pitcher’s mound marked on the surface and not raised. This enables safer and easier mobility for walkers and wheelchairs. In addition, the field has wider gate openings to a c c o m m o d a t e wheelchairs, cement pads
