I have about 12 hours or so of unwatched episodes to catch up on. Not that there’s really any point, since one glance at the social media sites pretty much ruins any suspenseful plot twists. And the magazines… well they’re fairly outdated for the most part. Still entertaining, but the list of upcoming events tends to lose some impact when they have all already passed, wouldn’t you say? Books… well, let’s just say that the only time I have managed to read an entire book (at least, since leaving school) is if I take it with me on vacation. Because, let’s face it, the plot tends to lose something when there’s a three-month gap between chapters. It’s amazing that when you

subtract certain obligations from your life, there always seem to be about 20 more that immediately crop up to fill the void. It makes you wonder how it’s even possible to accomplish what you need to. But I suppose we do manage, somehow. We find the time for those things we truly want to do; and we manage to avoid those things we would rather push to the bottom of the list. Simple human nature. Not the most practical or rational of practices, but still – it is how most of us tend to conduct our lives. Perhaps we should all take a page out of one of those unread “self-help” books and adjust our schedules to fill the void with some free time.

Back in June, when I officially “retired” from dancing, I assumed that with this newfound free time would come the unintended benefit of being able to catch up – watching the hours of TV shows I never seemed to be home for, going through the ever-growing pile of magazines collecting on my desk, or perhaps even tackling a book or two. Well, here we are, four months later, and I have to say – even if I took an entire day off to do the aforementioned things, I would probably barely make a dent. What are we, four weeks into the new TV season? I would say, cumulatively, that

Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country. In 1985 after the murder of a DEA agent, parents, youth and teachers in communities across the country began wearing Red Ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the destruction caused by drugs. Dr. Richard Orlandi and his staff at LaserToenailCenter.com offer in-office treatment of toenail fungus with a new revolutionary laser that kills toenail fungus. “The Pinpointe Laser is a major breakthrough in the treatment of toenail fungus. It is the newest and most effective FDA-approved treatment for toenail fungus now available to the public,” Dr. Orlandi explained. The Pinpointe Laser has appeared on Good Morning America, Fox News NY, ABC News and The Doctors TV show, All of these videos can be seen on their website, LaserToenailCenter.com. The general public is just becoming aware of this highly effective laser treatment that kills fungus underneath the toenail without pain. “The gentle laser light shines through the toenail, and the infrared light directly kills the fungal organisms. FDA studies started in 2007 reveal that

over 80% of the treated patients grew out normal looking toenails after just one treatment. Patients are extremely happy having this new treatment choice.” Dr. Orlandi continues saying, “The painless treatment requires no anesthesia, usually takes 20 to 30 minutes for all ten toes, has no side effects and uses no harmful UV radiation. Since there is no pain, you can walk out just like you walked in, with no restrictions. Toenail polish and shoes can be worn immediately after treatment. Excellent results are commonly seen following treatment of this condition. Healthy, clear toenails are a general indicator of good health, and there is no need to be embarrassed by unsightly fungal toenails.” For further information, contact Office Manager Arrianne at 631.669.4955.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) is set to receive a $20,000 grant from the NYS Office of Substance Abuse Services to support its addiction services in Suffolk County, thanks to the efforts of NYS Assemblyman Bob Sweeney. Specifically, the grant funds the expansion of LICADD’s Start2Stop program, which provides drug and alcohol information, solutionfocused counseling, peer support and treatment referrals to local residents of all ages. Start2Stop is a twelve week program directed to those who have had involvement with drug or alcohol use, and may have had professional or personal consequences, but not as a violent or high-level offense. “Long Island continues to experience a number of well-publicized tragedies due to substance abuse. The Start2Stop program helps participants get control of their substance abuse problem before it escalates into a tragedy. While we need strong laws to deal with the results of DWI and BWI incidents, it is far better to prevent those tragedies from happening in the first place. That’s what this grant is intended to do,” said Assemblyman Sweeney.

People traveled from all over Long Island, upstate and New York City to Montauk on Monday, October 8th (Columbus Day) to cheer on Irene Rabinowitz, owner of Barks-n-Bubbles Boutique, and her dog Sydney at the tail end of their journey of walking 70-miles in four days to raise awareness and funds for two charitable organizations.

A Journey Four Paws was Irene’s way of doing something to make a positive impact on getting a dog park built in her hometown in Selden, NY and to raise awareness about Arthritis - in which both her and her dog suffer from. But because of their daily long walks it helps keep them fit and the arthritis at bay. It was her personal journey to do this and had support from

pet lovers and pet companies from all over the United States as well as Canada. “I feel great that I put my mind to something and did it. I hope others can realize that ‘anything is possible.’ I learned early on that life is a journey; A Journey Four Paws had a lot of meaning for me on a personal level - taking the negatives that come our way in life and turning

Raising Funds important organizations to me is a bonus,” said Irene Rabinowitz, owner of Barks-n-Bubbles Boutique. At ‘the end’ of her Journey there was a Pet Celebration event in Montauk, of Long Island, was also a pet festival with pet vendors, music, food, raffles, prizes for best HOWL-o-ween costumes and more. While donations for A Journey Four Paws are still coming in, Irene estimates to have raised a about two thousand dollars at this point, to be split and donated to the Long Island Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation and to Central Suffolk Paws a division of LI-Dog.

Both beneficiaries were picked because they are close to Irene’s heart and because she suffers from Arthritis and the town in which she lives desperately needs a dog park. Central Suffolk Paws is working with the Town of Brookhaven to build a dog park, and the money donated will go towards building one in the near future. Irene is also turning 50 in the early part of 2013 and really wanted to mark her 50th year with a unique way to give back too! Rice and Justice Ute Wolff Lally. HCN will present the George W. Court Judge. Bellows, incoming president of the American Veterinary Dental College. “Dogs’ mouths are certainly not cleaner than a human’s. Dogs often carry a variety of germs and bacteria in their mouths that stem from buildup of plaque and tartar that can potentially make humans sick through contact with saliva.” The Right Kind of Chewing “Many pet owners also believe that any type of chewing is good for their dogs, but tooth fractures are a common occurrence in pets because teeth can only withstand a certain amount of pressure from hard objects before they break. When pets chew on inflexible items, such as bones, ice cubes or nylon toys, it can put them at risk for breaking a tooth. And while smelly breath in pets is common, pet owners who believe this is normal may be missing the signs of poor oral health or potential dental

disease,” Dr. Bellows said. A Healthy Mouth Is Key A healthy mouth is essential to the overall well-being of pets, but misguided information about pet oral health can affect more than just your pet’s mouth. For proper pet oral health, veterinarians advise daily brushing or giving of Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC)?approved dental treats, and at least annual oral exams by a veterinarian with professional cleanings as recommended. “Pet owners who are knowledgeable about their furry companions’ oral health will avoid the pitfalls of commonly held myths and enable the best care for everyone’s wellbeing,” said Dr. Bellows. To learn more about commonly accepted pet oral health myths and how to keep your pets’ mouths healthy, visit www.Facebook.com/green ies.

ending battle against polluted Long Island waterways. “Working on this project has opened my eyes to Long Island’s large environmental issues which I think every resident should know about,” said Alexandra Faul. Both students will be graduating this May with a Bachelor degrees in video, TV, and film. Rob Weltner, president of Operation SPLASH said “We’re very fortunate to have so many unselfish, hard-working volunteers in Operation SPLASH. And for their efforts to be captured in this wonderful short film by Corey and Alexandra, it reminds us

all that there are good people doing great things for our environment because they care.” Special guests, elected officials and local dignitaries have been invited to attend the free Premiere Party, and the general public is welcome to attend as well. The event will begin at 7 p.m. and includes live music by Bobby Blues and his AllStar Review, environmental displays and light refreshments. The Freeport Museum is located at 202 Woodcleft Avenue in Freeport. Reservations can be made by calling 516.378.4770.

The Need To Develop A Retirement Plan (NAPSI)—Preparing for retirement can be a challenging process—and emerging trends are not helping matters. Fortunately, developing a retirement plan can help. That’s the word from experts who say changes in employee benefits, longer life spans, uncertainty with Social Security and Medicare and the rising cost of health care have made funding retirement more difficult.

With most of the responsibilities for financial aspects of retirement now falling squarely on the shoulders of individuals, the key, according to Insured Retirement Institute President and CEO Cathy Weatherford, is to have a comprehensive plan that addresses both retirement income and expensesincluding health care. National Retirement Planning Week was

created to remind consumers of the importance of having a plan for funding their retirement. For those needing help, a professional financial advisor can assist when creating a road map toward attaining financial security. To learn more, visit www.retireonyourterms.o rg.

(NAPSI)—Dog owners who think a dog’s mouth is cleaner than a human’s are barking up the wrong tree—and they are not alone. In fact, according to a recent survey, many pet owners have beliefs about their pet’s health that are not accurate or grounded in science. For example, the study—commissioned by the Greenies brand, the maker of dental chews and treats for pets-found that almost half of pet owners believe that dogs’ mouths are cleaner than humans’ and that any type of chewing is good for a dog’s teeth. It also found that about 40 percent thought it was normal for their pets to have stinky breath. About one-third of pet owners believed that a dog’s saliva was capable of curing human wounds. “There is a lot of misinformation out there regarding a pet’s oral health,” said veterinary dental expert Dr. Jan

A team of students, faculty, staff and administration from Stony Brook University joined similar teams from 31 other colleges and universities from across the country for three days in Washington D.C., to learn from and share with one another about improving the health of their students by reducing harms associated with high-risk drinking. During the three-day conference, Stony Brook University representatives led by Jenny Hwang, PhD, Director of University Counseling, presented their progress in harm reduction and helping students make safer choices regarding alcohol use. The team conducted a presentation for their peer schools on “Think Again,” a student-developed social norms campaign designed to inform the campus community of alcohol use on campus. Campus statistics show that students overestimate the percentage of their peers who are engaged in heavy or high-risk drinking. Since 2011, Stony Brook University has been a member of the National College Health Improvement Project (NCHIP), a nationwide learning collaborative that seeks to combat high-risk drinking behavior on college campuses through data-driven, communitywide efforts involving

several areas of the University. The goals are to increase effective education and prevention models, ensure enforcement of policies and laws, and early intervention for those at risk. “We’re seeing the impact of institutional commitment and thoughtful, systematic engagement of our students to help increase the health and safety of the campus community,” said Dr. Hwang. “It’s not about dumping information into students’ heads - it’s about engaging them in a process as critical thinkers around what matters to them and how health and wellness play a role in being able to stay close to their goals, aspirations and values.” The Washington D.C. session was the third faceto-face meeting of this unique “learning collaborative” led by the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice at Dartmouth College. Campus improvement teams participated in strategysharing sessions on the subjects of “pre-gaming,” off-campus parties and other high-risk behaviors. According to statistics from the National Institute for Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, these high-risk behaviors result in the death of approximately 1,800

college students across the nation each year and contribute to hundreds of thousands of injuries, sexual assaults and academic failures. Since joining the collaborative, Stony Brook has seen several positive improvements in student health and safety across campus, including an increase in Red Watch Band membership, Stony Brook’s bystander intervention program, and increased help-seeking behavior by students. Common Car Seat Mistakes Parents Should Avoid (NAPSI)—Parents of young children need to be better educated in order to avoid making potentially dangerous safety mistakes when they are on the go. The Problem Automobile crashes remain a leading cause of death for children and it’s important that parents consistently and correctly use the appropriate car seat to keep their child passengers safe. Many parents may be unknowingly endangering their children as three out of four car seats are not used correctly, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Some Answers Busy parents and caregivers may be tempted by safety shortcuts when transporting children. AAA offers simple reminders to protect parents’ most precious cargo. Shortcut: “I’m only

driving a mile from home, so my son doesn’t need to be secured in his car seat since it’s a short trip.” Reminder: You should buckle up properly on every trip—no matter the distance—especially since most crashes occur close to home. Shortcut: “I’m picking up several kids after soccer practice and I’m going to put my 8-year-old daughter in the front seat so all the children can fit into the car.” Reminder: All children under age 13 are safest when riding in the backseat and properly restrained in a car seat, booster seat or seat belt. Shortcut: “We will be driving more people in our car than we have seat belts. Since it’s a short trip, it’s not a big deal for someone to ride on another person’s lap.” Reminder: It’s never safe to ride on another person’s lap. Each

passenger should be properly restrained on every trip. Shortcut: “My son is 10 years old and 4’6” tall. He’s big enough to use a seat belt now.” Reminder: The American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends children continue to use beltpositioning booster seats until they are 4’9” and the seat belt fits properly. Help For Parents Fortunately, AAA experts are available to help parents with car seat installation. Visit an AAA club, go to www.seatcheck.org or call (866) SEATCHECK [(866) 732-8243]. Ten Tips For Vehicle Maintenance (NAPSI)—To keep your car on the road to safety and savings, now is a good time to make sure that it’s in the best condition. “Now is the time for motorists to ensure that their vehicles are in shape,” said Jim Sassorossi, head of Product Development at Mopar, Chrysler Group’s service, parts and customer-care brand. “The safety, performance and life of a vehicle hinge on preventive maintenance.” Here are hints on how: • Check Brakes— Brakes are one of the most used (and often abused) components on a car. A thin layer of the brake pad disintegrates every time the brakes are applied. Replace pads or shoes before drums or rotors become damaged. Check pads, shoes, drums, rotors, calipers, fittings, brake hardware and the parking brake to prevent problems. • Check Tires—Check air pressure on all tires,

including the spare. Improper tire pressure leads to premature wear and a decrease in fuel mileage. The entire surface of the tire, both tread and sidewall, should be inspected for uneven or irregular wear. • Check Lights— Inspect and test all exterior lamps and lights, including turn signals and hazard lights, to ensure that they are in proper working order and alignment. • Check Air Filter—The air filter is one of the unsung heroes of a vehicle, as it protects the engine from airborne contaminants. Replacing a dirty air filter helps ensure proper performance and longer life. • Check Oil—Oil is the lifeblood of the engine. Engine oil level should be changed and replenished regularly. • Check All Fluid Levels—Dirty or low fluids may affect the performance of a vehicle

and can lead to breakdowns if not properly monitored and filled. • Check Engine Belts, Hoses and Fuel Filter— Prevent breakdowns or serious engine damage and maximize fuel economy. • Check Battery—Look for corroded terminals and inspect for a bulging or cracked case. • Check Shocks and Struts—They’re vital for a smooth ride and optimal handling and may affect other vehicle parts. • Check Wiper Blades— Properly functioning wiper blades increase visibility. To alert you when it’s time for a change, Mopar all-season wiper blades feature an innovative wear indicator that gradually turns from black to green to yellow as the blades wear. dramatic or tense texting conversation, it could be too enticing to focus on the phone instead of the road. The Stats The U.S. government’s official website on distracted driving, www.distraction.gov, cites multiple statistics on the dangers of this careless behavior: • Using a mobile phone while driving, whether it’s handheld or hands-free, delays a driver’s reactions as much as having a blood alcohol concentration at the legal limit of .08 percent. • Driving while using a mobile phone reduces the amount of brain activity associated with driving by 37 percent. • Drivers who use handheld devices are four times as likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves as those who don’t. • An estimated 11 percent of drivers are talking on cell phones while driving at any point during the day. The Steps 1. Impress upon teens the need to not text or talk

on the phone while driving by not doing so yourself. Beyond providing an example of responsible behavior, this creates a safer driving environment. 2. Explain to your teens the seriousness of the situation and let them know that it is important to have a plan in order to avoid temptation. For example, have them always keep their cell phone off while driving or in the backseat out of reach to avoid distraction completely. 3. Learn more from the experts in mobile technology at LG by visiting the company’s LG Text Ed website, www.lgtexted.com. As part of its Text Education campaign, LG offers insights and solutions on how to avoid possibly harmful behaviors such as distracted driving. In order to keep distractions to a minimum, LG encourages all drivers to never text while driving and to always use a handsfree Bluetooth device when operating a vehicle.

(NAPSI)—There are steps parents and others can take to drive down the dreadful rate of traffic injuries and fatalities. An estimated 6,000 people are killed and 500,000 people are injured annually because someone was texting, e-mailing or talking on a mobile phone while driving. The Facts Dr. Joel Haber, a clinical psychologist and LG Text Ed council member, explains that for teens, texting and driving is an even bigger problem than it is for adults. First, kids text more. Texting is their preferred mode of communication. According to a recent LG Text Ed survey conducted by LG Mobile phones, while half of all teens admit to texting while driving, only 4 percent of parents are aware of this. Second, teens are inherently novices when it comes to driving. They especially need to focus on the road to compensate for any lack of driving skill or experience. Third, teens can literally be driven to distraction. If a teen is caught up in a

Talk To Kids About Online Safety (NAPSI)—If you’re a parent, you can add one more potentially awkward—but absolutely critical—“talk” to your todo list. While you may have discussed the risks associated with sex, smoking, alcohol and drugs with your child, if you haven’t yet talked about the dangers of risky online behavior, then this is an increasingly imperative conversation to have. The Internet is now integral to all of our daily lives and your job is to help your child form healthy online connections without engaging—knowingly or unknowingly—in risky and compromising behavior. Many parents are aware

that digital communications can bring unwanted consequences. In fact, 83 percent of parents in a recent survey reported strong concerns about what their children are exposed to online. The need to have this conversation doesn’t make having it any more comfortable. Having “the talk” about online safety must focus on personal boundaries and privacy and should educate children about specific and serious threats to personal safety. To help parents prepare for and hold a successful online protection talk with their child, global cloud security leader TrendMicro has published

an eGuide full of tips for navigating this sensitive topic, including: • Use the parental control features of your security software to block children’s access to harmful or inappropriate websites. Some security software, such as Trend Micro™ Titanium™ Maximum Security 2012, lets parents set this only when their kids are using the computer. • How to avoid unwanted contact, including from bullies and sexual predators, by using the social networking privacy settings and computer security software like Trend Micro™ Titanium™ Maximum Security 2012. • Use reputable

law that you must have lender’s title insurance. 5. Owner’s title insurance is expensive. Answers: 1. False. Many things can cloud a title, including failure to pay child support, alimony, taxes, parking tickets and even the subcontractors for a home improvement. 2. False. Only owner’s title insurance protects your interests in the property. If there is a problem with the title, only owner’s title insurance will pay your legal fees to resolve it. 3. False. The title industry paid $1 billion in claims in 2010 and

corrects problems in a third of all transactions. 4. False. While most lenders require that you purchase lender’s title insurance to protect their investment, there is no requirement by the state to do so. 5. False. You pay for owner’s title insurance once at closing and it protects you for as long as you have an interest in the property. By contrast, you pay homeowner’s insurance annually. concepts, the guide offers novice-friendly language and illustrations, in addition to practical tips, to help bridge gaps in technical understanding. “We want to prepare— not scare—parents and children, because there are so many amazing benefits to learning and exploring on the Internet,” said computer security expert Natalie Severino. “With this Guide, we hope that

families will gain a better understanding of what online risks look, act and feel like so that they can confidently reap the benefits of communicating and connecting online.” For practical, powerful and persuasive advice about how to have online protection discussions with your child, download the guide at www.trendmicro.com/thet alk.

Test Your Knowledge (NAPSI)—If you have purchased a home, chances are you have heard about title insurance. Take this quiz to see how much you know—or think you know! True or False? 1. I don’t need title insurance for myself because if there were a title problem, they would have found it in the title search. 2. I bought lender’s title insurance. That should protect me. 3. I’ve never heard of anyone collecting a claim, so I don’t need owner’s title insurance. 4. In my state, it’s the

( N A P S I ) - - To d a y ’s housing market, with sometimes sloppy foreclosure procedures and corner-cutting sellers, makes owner’s title insurance more important than ever, and a growing number of home-buyers are warding off potential real estate problems with

this proactive type of insurance. Owner’s title insurance can offer homeowners protection against many legal hazards (incorrect n o t a r y acknowledgements, previously undisclosed heirs to the property and even counterfeit land

deeds) that can emerge, usually after the completion of a real estate purchase. Most lenders require home-buyers to purchase lender’s title insurance when they obtain a loan, but this only protects the lender’s investment when problems occur. Owner’s

title insurance provides coverage to homebuyers for as long as they or their heirs own the property. For a one-time fee, it gives the insured the best possible chance for avoiding title claim and loss. After your sales contract has been accepted, a title

professional will search the public records to look for any problems with the home’s title. This search typically involves a review of land records and title problems that are fixed before you go to closing. Owner’s title insurance comes into play after settlement when

previously undisclosed problems arise. For more information on owner’s title insurance, talk to a local title company or go to www.homeclosing101.org . You can also visit www.alta.org for more details.
