Oyster Bay Town residents are reminded that the First Half of the 2012-2013 School Tax Levy is due on October 1st, but can be paid without penalty through November 13th. Family Fall & Halloween Fest Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto invites residents and their families to the Town of Oyster Bay’s fourth annual Family Fall & Halloween Festival. On Saturday, October 20th, the Town will host the second fall family festival from 1 to 4 p.m. at Marjorie R. Post Park, at the corner of Unqua and Merrick Roads, in
Massapequa. As in years past, this fun-filled event takes place on both the Town’s North and South shores. The first festival was held earlier this month at SyossetWoodbury Community Park, in Jericho. “This annual free event features fun activities for children and adults alike, including Halloween crafts, bouncies and

I have about 12 hours or so of unwatched episodes to catch up on. Not that there’s really any point, since one glance at the social media sites pretty much ruins any suspenseful plot twists. And the magazines… well they’re fairly outdated for the most part. Still entertaining, but the list of upcoming events tends to lose some impact when they have all already passed, wouldn’t you say? Books… well, let’s just say that the only time I have managed to read an entire book (at least, since leaving school) is if I take it with me on vacation. Because, let’s face it, the plot tends to lose something when there’s a three-month gap between chapters. It’s amazing that when you
subtract certain obligations from your life, there always seem to be about 20 more that immediately crop up to fill the void. It makes you wonder how it’s even possible to accomplish what you need to. But I suppose we do manage, somehow. We find the time for those things we truly want to do; and we manage to avoid those things we would rather push to the bottom of the list. Simple human nature. Not the most practical or rational of practices, but still – it is how most of us tend to conduct our lives. Perhaps we should all take a page out of one of those unread “self-help” books and adjust our schedules to fill the void with some free time.

Back in June, when I officially “retired” from dancing, I assumed that with this newfound free time would come the unintended benefit of being able to catch up – watching the hours of TV shows I never seemed to be home for, going through the ever-growing pile of magazines collecting on my desk, or perhaps even tackling a book or two. Well, here we are, four months later, and I have to say – even if I took an entire day off to do the aforementioned things, I would probably barely make a dent. The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) is set to receive a $20,000 grant from the NYS Office of Substance Abuse Services to support its addiction services in Suffolk County, thanks to the efforts of NYS Assemblyman Bob Sweeney. People traveled from all over Long Island, upstate and New York City to Montauk on Monday, October 8th (Columbus Day) to cheer on Irene Rabinowitz, owner of Barks-n-Bubbles Boutique, and her dog Sydney at the tail end of their journey of walking 70-miles in four days to raise awareness and funds for two charitable organizations.
A Journey Four Paws was Irene’s way of doing something to make a positive impact on getting a dog park built in her hometown in Selden, NY and to raise awareness about Arthritis - in which both her and her dog suffer from. Both beneficiaries were picked because they are close to Irene’s heart and because she suffers from Arthritis and the town in which she lives desperately needs a dog park. Central Suffolk Paws is working with the Town of Brookhaven to build a dog park, and the money donated will go towards building one in the near future. (NAPSI)—Dog owners who think a dog’s mouth is cleaner than a human’s are barking up the wrong tree—and they are not alone. In fact, according to a recent survey, many pet owners have beliefs about their pet’s health that are not accurate or grounded in science. For example, the study—commissioned by the Greenies brand, the maker of dental chews and treats for pets-found that almost half of pet owners believe that dogs’ mouths are cleaner than humans’ and that any type of chewing is good for a dog’s teeth. It also found that about 40 percent thought it was normal for their pets to have stinky breath. About one-third of pet owners believed that a dog’s saliva was capable of curing human wounds. “There is a lot of misinformation out there regarding a pet’s oral health,” said veterinary dental expert Dr. Jan

A team of students, faculty, staff and administration from Stony Brook University joined similar teams from 31 other colleges and universities from across the country for three days in Washington D.C., to learn from and share with one another about improving the health of their students by reducing harms associated with high-risk drinking. During the three-day conference, Stony Brook University representatives led by Jenny Hwang, PhD, Director of University Counseling, presented their progress in harm reduction and helping students make safer choices regarding alcohol use. The team conducted a presentation for their peer schools on “Think Again,” a student-developed social norms campaign designed to inform the campus community of alcohol use on campus. Campus statistics show that students overestimate the percentage of their peers who are engaged in heavy or high-risk drinking. Since 2011, Stony Brook University has been a member of the National College Health Improvement Project (NCHIP), a nationwide learning collaborative that seeks to combat high-risk drinking behavior on college campuses through data-driven, communitywide efforts involving

Campus improvement teams participated in strategysharing sessions on the subjects of “pre-gaming,” off-campus parties and other high-risk behaviors. According to statistics from the National Institute for Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, these high-risk behaviors result in the death of approximately 1,800
college students across the nation each year and contribute to hundreds of thousands of injuries, sexual assaults and academic failures. Many parents may be unknowingly endangering their children as three out of four car seats are not used correctly, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Ten Tips For Vehicle Maintenance (NAPSI)—To keep your car on the road to safety and savings, now is a good time to make sure that it’s in the best condition. “Now is the time for motorists to ensure that their vehicles are in shape,” said Jim Sassorossi, head of Product Development at Mopar, Chrysler Group’s service, parts and customer-care brand. “The safety, performance and life of a vehicle hinge on preventive maintenance.” Here are hints on how: • Check Brakes— Brakes are one of the most used (and often abused) components on a car. A thin layer of the brake pad disintegrates every time the brakes are applied. Replace pads or shoes before drums or rotors become damaged. Check pads, shoes, drums, rotors, calipers, fittings, brake hardware and the parking brake to prevent problems. • Check Tires—Check air pressure on all tires,
including the spare. Improper tire pressure leads to premature wear and a decrease in fuel mileage. The entire surface of the tire, both tread and sidewall, should be inspected for uneven or irregular wear. • Check Lights— Inspect and test all exterior lamps and lights, including turn signals and hazard lights, to ensure that they are in proper working order and alignment. • Check Air Filter—The air filter is one of the unsung heroes of a vehicle, as it protects the engine from airborne contaminants. (NAPSI)—There are steps parents and others can take to drive down the dreadful rate of traffic injuries and fatalities. An estimated 6,000 people are killed and 500,000 people are injured annually because someone was texting, e-mailing or talking on a mobile phone while driving. The Facts Dr. Joel Haber, a clinical psychologist and LG Text Ed council member, explains that for teens, texting and driving is an even bigger problem than it is for adults. First, kids text more. Texting is their preferred mode of communication. According to a recent LG Text Ed survey conducted by LG Mobile phones, while half of all teens admit to texting while driving, only 4 percent of parents are aware of this. Second, teens are inherently novices when it comes to driving. They especially need to focus on the road to compensate for any lack of driving skill or experience. ( N A P S I ) - - To d a y ’s housing market, with sometimes sloppy foreclosure procedures and corner-cutting sellers, makes owner’s title insurance more important than ever, and a growing number of home-buyers are warding off potential real estate problems with
this proactive type of insurance. Owner’s title insurance can offer homeowners protection against many legal hazards (incorrect n o t a r y acknowledgements, previously undisclosed heirs to the property and even counterfeit land
deeds) that can emerge, usually after the completion of a real estate purchase. Most lenders require home-buyers to purchase lender’s title insurance when they obtain a loan, but this only protects the lender’s investment when problems occur. Owner’s
title insurance provides coverage to homebuyers for as long as they or their heirs own the property. For a one-time fee, it gives the insured the best possible chance for avoiding title claim and loss. After your sales contract has been accepted, a title
professional will search the public records to look for any problems with the home’s title. This search typically involves a review of land records and title problems that are fixed before you go to closing. Owner’s title insurance comes into play after settlement when
