Take A Seat By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Full disclosure: I am a Yankee fan. Always have been, always will be. That said, I fully respect those who are not. However, as with politics, when a rivalry takes a turn toward bitter hatred, I lose that respect. Let’s be reminded that, contrary to larger, more world-defining issues, baseball is a game – a highly profitable one, yes; but still, just a game. I laugh when I hear those who use the Yankees’ exorbitant payroll as a valid reason for despising each and every player on the team. Need it be pointed out that just about every team in the MLB employs numerous multi-millionaires on its roster? Is the difference between $5 million for one player versus $20 million for another really that different in the larger scope of things? These are grown men playing a game for a living.
Let’s face it – they are all grossly overpaid. The same can be said for most rock stars, members of Hollywood’s elite, just about all professional athletes – and even some members of a few more universally respected professions. You know, like lawyers and accountants and Wall Street executives… So yes, I understand the criticism directed at certain members of the baseball world whom fans feel have not pulled their weight, who may not have truly “earned their paycheck” this past season. I wholeheartedly agree. But seriously, do you mean to tell me that if a member of your favorite team went on to win the World Series, this extravagance would somehow be deemed more acceptable? I don’t know what it takes to “earn” $20 million, but I’m pretty sure playing baseball doesn’t qualify regardless of
the outcome of the games. It’s the system as a whole that is unbalanced. And, if we’re being totally candid, I’m willing to bet that there are few among us who would turn down such a lucrative opportunity if it meant a lifetime of financial security. So perhaps we shouldn’t be so quick to judge. I enjoy my entertainment as much as the next person. And yes, when my team puts on such a pathetic showing as they did this past postseason, I am filled with just as much frustration as the next person. But then common sense creeps in… just because someone signed a $20 million check for a player, does not guarantee that they will succeed each and every day. We are all only human, despite how inhuman such sums of money sometimes seem. Let’s all save the hatred for an issue that truly matters.

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Muscarella announced that the Town’s Annual Leaf Collection Program is scheduled to get underway on Monday, November 5th. “The special leaf collection program will run through Friday, December 7th,” Councilman Muscarella stated. “Bagged leaves will be picked up on residents’ regular S.O.R.T. recycling collection days by the combined forces of the Department of Public Works-Sanitation & Recycling Collection Division and the Highway Department. The Highway Department will also pick up bagged leaves in unincorporated areas that do not receive Town sanitation every Monday for the duration of the leaf collection program.” Councilman Muscarella went on to say that residents should place

Stony Brook Medicine has entered the 2nd Annual National Pink Glove video competition, sponsored by MedLine Industries Inc., with a four-minute video capturing the spirit of Stony Brook physicians and staff, as well as the broader Stony Brook community, in their dedication to fighting breast cancer. On Friday, October 12th, voting opened nationwide to determine which videos will receive the most votes, with prize money donated for breast cancer research. “We danced the dance, and now it’s time to rock the vote,” said Linda Bily, Cancer Patient Advocacy & Community Outreach Coordinator for the Stony Brook University Cancer Center, who coordinated production of Stony Brook’s video. “We need the support not only of the campus, but from the broader community we serve, since our goal is 75,000 votes in just two
weeks’ time.” Last year, Medline sponsored its first online competition nationwide to find the best Pink Glove Dance video. The competition featured 139 videos from hospitals, nursing homes, schools and other organizations throughout the U.S. and Canada. The contest quickly became a national social media phenomenon, with the videos receiving more than 1.2 million views, a half a million votes and thousands of tweets, blogs and texts. Lexington Medical Center in West Columbia, S.C., won last year’s competition with 61,054 votes. Now the race is on to see which video will garner the most votes in 2012, with a top prize of $10,000 to be donated for breast cancer research to the winner’s selected charity of choice. Second prize is $5,000 and third prize is $2,000. Voting ends at midnight on Friday, October 26th, and
the winners will be announced on November 2nd. Voting will be conducted using a contest application integrated with Facebook. Users must have a Facebook account and be logged into their account to vote. Users may access the contest application either on Facebook, via a link on www.Facebook.com/medli nebreastcancerawareness or from the contest page that will be displayed on Pinkglovedance.com. Entries are displayed alphabetically so voters can easily locate the entry they wish to vote for. Stony Brook’s video is set to the tune of “You Won’t Dance Alone,” by the Best Day Ever, which was the song used in the second year of the Pink Glove Dance competition. It features campy performances by such leaders as Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, Senior Vice President, Health Sciences, and Dean, Stony Brook University School
of Medicine, and Yusuf Hannun, MD, Director of the Cancer Center, Vice Dean, Cancer Medicine and the Joel Kenny Professor of Medicine as well as many Stony Brook University sports teams and clubs, and community supporters. “This is all in good fun, but for serious business: defeating breast cancer,” said Dr. Hannun. “This video project is symbolic of all that we can accomplish when we join together to achieve one unifying goal. It symbolizes the enormous teamwork at Stony Brook Medicine in dedicating our research efforts toward finding a cure for this disease.” Dr. Hannun in particular recognized Linda Bily for her role in coordinating the video, along with Lynn Spinnato of Spinnato Gallery, who served as director; and Lauren Kaushansky, Instructor in the Professional Education Program, Department of History, at Stony Brook University, who served as creative consultant on the project. The Pink Glove Dance video phenomenon began three years ago, when Medline produced the original Pink Glove Dance video to raise breast cancer awareness. The first video generated more than 13 million views on YouTube and inspired countless videos and events around the world.

Take Steps To Avoid Falls All New Yorkers should take precautions to prevent potentially serious falls. Serious falls are the leading cause of injury, death, hospitalizations and emergency department visits for older adults annually in New York State. E a c h year, approximately 133,000 New Yorkers over the age of 65 sustain fallrelated injuries that require hospitalization. The most common injuries that result from serious falls are bone fractures, lacerations, or traumatic brain injuries. The good news is that you can minimize the risk of falling by taking a few simple precautions. De-
clutter stairways or highly-traveled walking areas, install non-slip flooring, steady unstable furniture, install adequate lighting, put handrails on stairways, and make a full home assessment to identify and correct potential fall hazards. Here are a few more simple ways you can reduce the risks of falling: • Engage in a regular exercise program to improve strength, balance and coordination; • Have a discussion with your health care provider to review your doctor prescribed and over- thecounter medications, that may cause dizziness or drowsiness; • Have an annual eye exam to check for poor
vision, a needed change in your eyeglasses prescription, or conditions like glaucoma that may limit your vision; and, • Wear shoes to prevent slipping. For more information about fall injury prevention, visit the New York State Department of Health web site at www.helath.ny.gov This article was sponsored by the New York Department of State, AARP, the Harry and Jeannette Weinberg Center for Elder Abuse at the Hebrew Home at Riverdale, NY State Office for the Aging (SOFA) and the Free Community Papers of New York.
Extra Pep In Their Step
Spirit and excitement were evident throughout this year’s pep rally festivities at John F. Kennedy Middle School in the Bethpage School District. The fun began on a
Friday afternoon when team members from every fall sports team showed off their “JFK Pride.” Coaches introduced each player, including managers and scorekeepers from all of the fall teams and they
each got to “high-five” the school mascot. The Pep Rally served to commemorate all of the fall sports teams, and specifically to kick off the football team’s home game the following day.

Cancer Walk For Hope CancerCare will host the 10th Annual Lung Cancer Walk for Hope on Sunday, November 4th, at the Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course, in Woodbury. The lung cancer walk was founded in 2003 with 60 walkers and has grown to include more than 1,200 participants. The fundraising goal for this year’s event is $250,000. Lung cancer is often referred to as a “silent” cancer due to the stigma and lack of public awareness about the disease. CancerCare, a national nonprofit,
responded to the need to support people coping with lung cancer and their loved ones by launching a lung cancer program, which provides free counseling, support groups, education, and financial assistance. On-site registration for the Walk is $40.00 for adults, $20.00 for students ages 13-22, and $10.00 for children 12 and under. Accepting Nominations Nassau BOCES Education Partner Awards program is now accepting nominations through Friday, November 2nd. Now in its seventh year, the program has added specific award categories allowing for a greater number and variety of honorees. In addition to the Education Partner award category, which is open to individuals from all walks of life, nominations are being accepted in five special award categories. And, for the first time, organizations can be nominated. The award categories
are: • Education Partner (open to all) - Teachers • Nassau BOCES employees Organizations • School Board Members - Students “One of the nicest things about our program is that, just like Nassau BOCES, it is open to people from all walks of life, and we welcome nominations that reflect this diversity,” said Dr. Thomas Rogers, Nassau BOCES district superintendent. “Each year, we honor those whose impact on public education can be
measured in a tangible way. And, in these challenging times we are especially appreciative of people who go above and beyond the scope of their commitments.” A strategic education partner with local school districts since 1967, Nassau BOCES created the Education Partner Awards program to recognize those who share its commitment to providing the best possible education for learners of all ages and abilities. Over the past six years, the Nassau BOCES Education Partner Awards program has recognized
County. Previous nominees have included parents, educators, coaches, members of the public and private sector including, attorneys, reporters, volunteers, legislators, college professors and retirees.
This year’s winners will be announced in January 2013 and will be honored March 21st, 2013, at the seventh annual Nassau BOCES Education Partner Awards Gala sponsored by the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation.
Tee Off For Teens Golfers at the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence’s inaugural Tee-Off For Our Teens tournament held last Wednesday at the Maidstone Club in East Hampton raised an impressive $126,000 to support the agency’s youth-focused programs. This first time event compliments LICADD’s R. Brinkley Smithers Invitational Golf Tournament, which was held in September in Nassau County. LICADD Board Director and resident of East Hampton and Locust Valley, Alfred E. Devendorf was pleased by the support of the local community, he remarked “LICADD has been graciously welcomed on the South Fork and the response to this event has been overwhelming. East End business owners and local residents, including Southampton Mayor Mark Epley, have been extremely generous in their support of our
programs.” “The demand for our services from young people and their families continues to soar,” explained LICADD Executive Director Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds, “and schools are hungry for proven prevention programs that go beyond scare tactics and give kids the tools necessary to resist peer pressure, enhance family communication and ultimately stay safer. Funds raised at the Tee-Off for Our Teens tournament will help us reach more kids and assist more families across Long Island, with a renewed emphasis on the East End.” LICADD delivers evidence-based prevention programs aimed at bolstering children and young adults’ self-esteem, confidence and communication with peers and parents, before they are presented with the choice to use alcohol and drugs. Too Good for
Drugs, which targets children in kindergarten through 12th grade, builds students’ resiliency by teaching them how to be socially competent and autonomous problem solvers. For young people displaying signs of alcohol and drug abuse, Teen Intervene offers a monthlong combination of individual and parentpresent counseling sessions focused on charting a different direction that includes abstinence and healthier coping strategies. LICADD Board Chair and Event Co-Chair Jeffery Capazzi commented on the outstanding turnout: “It is extremely encouraging to see this kind of recognition for the staggering need that exists currently on Long Island. Our participants’ commitment to solving this problem ensures these crucial programs are available to our young people who are most at risk.”
