airway Market generously donated cookies and hot chocolate to HANC Plainview to distribute to students each morning who are without heat at home. Like everyone else in Plainview, HANC students are trying to recover in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, which is tough when so many homes are still without heat and electricity. The HANC Plainview administration felt it was important to give the students a sense of normalcy as soon as possible.

Butch Yamali of the Coral House has announced that the 352,000 troops who recently came home from Afghanistan to Long Island and across the United States are invited to a free Thanksgiving feast with all the trimmings on November 25th at the Coral House on Milburn Avenue in Baldwin. According to Maj Chuck Kilbride USMC of the Toys for Tots Program, “This is a wonderful opportunity for those who dedicated their lives for our nation to spend times with their families for the first time in many years. There is no cost to the veteran.” This is expected to be the largest military thanksgiving reception in the United States. By: Jamie Lynn Ryan This holiday season, it seems especially appropriate to reflect on those things we are thankful for, individually and collectively. Considering all that most of us have been through – and continue to go through – over the last month, I believe most of us have found a new appreciation for those things formerly taken for granted. For one, if you are fortunate enough to spend this Thanksgiving holiday with your family, friends and loved ones, consider yourself ahead of the game. Sure, you may have to forgo the traditional turkey dinner at home, but was the holiday ever truly about the food to begin with?

Perhaps, for some. Food, coupled with football and Black Friday shopping, right? Well this year, it is about something else, something far more important to the big picture. Togetherness. Compassion. Charity. That sense of fulfillment that only comes from these qualities… if only it didn’t take natural disasters and national tragedies to bring this sort of behavior out. I suppose the better part of human nature is always there, just below the surface, pushed aside by the daily monotony of life’s obligations. But to see it on display… that’s something the likes of which we don’t witness nearly often enough. This Thanksgiving – and

Christmas, while we’re at it – the emphasis should be on the people we choose to celebrate with. The rest is material – the food, the gifts, the decorations – and can be modified on the fly. But the people… they cannot be replaced. We have all lost a lot over this last month; at the very least, a sense of security and complacency. Maybe this isn’t a bad thing. Perhaps it is a reminder that we should never take things for granted, and should always be moving forward. You simply never know when things will come to a grinding standstill. Let’s all enjoy the moments and the memories this holiday season. Absorb each and every one and savor them. Happy Thanksgiving.

Oyster Bay Town Receiver of Taxes James J. Stefanich advises Town of Oyster Bay property owners that the original November 10th deadline to pay the first half of their 2012-2013 school tax bill has been extended, by executive order from New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo, to December 4th. Residents may pay through December 4th without penalty. “Residents throughout the Town of Oyster Bay and beyond have been affected by the devastating events of Hurricane Sandy,” Receiver of Taxes Jim Stefanich said. “These last few weeks have truly been the definition of e x t r a o r d i n a r y circumstances, and so the Governor has taken the appropriate measures to extend the deadline through Executive Order, so as not to penalize those who have been affected by forces beyond their control.” Receiver Stefanich pointed out that while this Executive Order applies to all school districts, each district has the choice to opt in to this program. To date, two school districts have yet to opt in to this extension: Roslyn School District and North Shore

Tax Deadline Extended School District, however the Executive Order may be revised and amended to include them at a later date. When paying the tax bill in person, taxpayers are reminded to bring the entire tax bill with their payments. Payments being made by mail should include the second half stub. Residents should NOT write on, fold, staple or otherwise deface the tax stub as it can cause the computer system to reject payment. Please note that the Hicksville Parking Facility Tax Annex will not be open for collection during this extension period. Residents looking to pay in person may do so at Town Halls North (74 Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay) or South (977 Hicksville Road in Massapequa). Receiver Stefanich reminded residents that they have access to tax bills online with the ability to pay taxes through ACH check payment or credit card. “These services are available through a link on our Town website, www.oysterbaytown.com,” Receiver Stefanich said. “Residents should be aware there is a service fee if they chose to pay taxes on-line. The Town of

Aftermath Aid

Oyster Bay receives no portion of the fee.” When calling the Tax Office for information on property taxes, residents are requested to have the school district, section, block and lot numbers of the property in question available. This information is listed on the tax bill and on the property deed.

LENDING A HAND - Over 25 Scouts from the Theodore Roosevelt Council, Boy Scout Troop 189 of Temple B’nai Torah in Wantagh, their leaders and family members, teamed up with the American Red Cross to assist victims of Hurricane Sandy. They reported to the staging area in Lido Beach where they were assigned an outreach program on the West End of Long Beach knocking on doors to see if residents were in need of help, identifying houses with elderly residents, supplying food, water, information and helping residents to salvage their personal belongings.

Three days after Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc on Long Island, people of all ages, from all walks of life and from various surrounding towns sought shelter at the Bellmore Memorial Library. One of the first libraries in the area to reopen after Monday’s storm, the staff was pleased to welcome the hundreds of people who came into the library

to get warm, charge their phones and laptops, check their emails, and to share their stories with one another. Aside from providing much needed disaster relief information, the library served coffee and cookies, showed movies and even set up an area where folks could follow the Presidential election. At the request of several patrons, the library’s

director and board of trustees kept the library open for extended hours over Veteran’s Day weekend so that that those who had been displaced would continue to have a “home base.” Director Maureen Garvey was thrilled to see the library used as the community center she firmly believes it to be.

Gingerbreadology Degree There’s no shortage of gumdrops, lollipops and marshmallows – or creative fun for kids – at this year’s Annual Gingerbread University Holiday Workshop, hosted by the WE CARE Fund of the Nassau County Bar Association. On Saturday, December 8th, children of all ages will have the opportunity to decorate their very own gingerbread houses at the Nassau County Bar Association, 15th and West Streets, Mineola. Upon successful completion of the course “curriculum,” graduating students will receive their creations as well as a diploma in the Degree in Gingerbreadology. While the kids have fun, they are also helping those less fortunate. All proceeds from the annual holiday event are donated to the WE CARE Fund, the philanthropic arm of the Nassau County Bar Association. WE CARE funds are raised by the

legal profession and the community-at-large at various fund raising activities throughout the year. Nearly 100% raised is distributed through charitable grants to improve the quality of life for children, the elderly and others in need throughout Nassau County. In the 20 years since its founding, Nassau County attorneys have given $2 million to more than 100 local charitable causes. This is the 10th year WE CARE has sponsored Gingerbread University. Tuition for the two-hour “course” is $40 per child, and each student may keep the final decorated gingerbread house. Parents are welcome to photograph or videotape their child’s progress as well as the final Commencement exercises. Light refreshments will be served. You may also wish to pre-order a take home kit including a

gingerbread house and everything needed to decorate it, for $45. The kit can be picked up on December 8th. Gingerbread University students can sign up for one of two sessions, Session I: 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. or Session II: 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. To sign up, send your name, address, total number of children attending, the session you plan to attend, and the total tuition with a check made out to the WE CARE Fund, to the WE CARE Fund, Nassau County Bar Association, 15th and West Streets, Mineola, NY 11501. Parents may sign up via credit card on the web site, www.nassaubar.org, and click on Calendar, Special Events. This popular course usually sells out, so reserve early! PET’S PLACE BY SHARON HUBBARD - Sharonadoptpet@aol.com • avoiceforanimals.org

Dear Readers,

For More Information Call: 631-226-2636 - www.theneighbornewspapers.com

It’s snowing as I write this and, like many of you, I haven’t had electricity for ten days now. I’m wearing multiple layers of clothing and gloves, and it feels as if I’ll never be able to get warm again. But I need to reach out to you because our friends, our neighbors and our community needs our assistance. The following Town Shelters and Rescues are reaching out for the community’s help...

placed. Some are waiting for the power to be turned back on; others need to rebuild. These people are living with friends and in shelters. One of their serious concerns is their beloved pets. What we’re trying to organize is a list of people available to help, one family at a time. If you can open your home temporarily to a dog or cat - not an unknown stray; rather, someone’s pet - for a limited period of time, you would be helping a family in their worst hour. Many of these families just have nowhere to take their pets while they get themselves back together. With that in mind, please e-mail me if you are able to assist. If you can take someone’s pet, let me know exactly what your requirements are... Dog or cat? Size? Male or female? Friendly with other pets or kids? How long you can foster? If you can’t take in a pet but can help in some other way (maybe transport?), please let me know. And finally, if you have any ideas on how to make this endeavor work and want to help organize it, please let me know. We will take all the help we can get.

From Bulldog Rescue: Due to the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, many of our volunteers have been left without power, evacuated from their homes and tending to getting their own affairs in order. We are in great need of foster homes in New Jersey, Long Island and surrounding areas. This means that if you genuinely want to help a Bulldog who has no where else to turn, we will cover all approved medical expenses and will provide a MCM Rottweiler Rescue crate if needed. If you would like to volunteer to foster, please contact: www.mcmrottweilerrescue.petfinder.com Bulldogrescue1@aol.com. We don’t want to turn away a rescue, and we don’t want to see them end up on the street or in the shelters. We Hempstead Shelter: are taking donations to help with costs of boarding if for some reason Hempstead Animal Shelter is in desperate need of newspaper, towwe can’t find a foster home. We can board as a last resort. els and blankets. We don’t have power, and are running on a generator, which means we don’t have a washing machine/dryer. It is a cold Babylon Town Shelter: 30 degrees most nights. Although we have heat in the kennels, it still I have been asked by the Babylon Town Animal Shelter to try to gets chilly. We NEED people to come in to foster animals - we need assist in the huge influx of pets in need of help. Many of the residents rescues to step up to adopt from the shelter. We have small dogs, of Babylon, as well as other townships on Long Island, have been dis- felines, kittens, adults cats and seniors. Anyone interested in adopting

from the shelter is urged to contact: Nancy Giris at NGiris@tohmail.org; or Wendy Cariello at WCariello@tohmail.org. Any rescues interested in pulling from the shelter are asked to contact: Shari Polen at Spolen@tohmail.org. If you want to help, you can do the following: • foster an animal • donate newspaper • donate gently-used towels/blankets • donate pillows/cases • donate cat carriers/dog cages (all sizes) • donate cat litter/cat food (kitten food) • donate dog toys/dog food (unopened) Little Shelter: Readers, the Little Shelter in Huntington has been devastated by the storm. Eighteen trees are down and Kennel Two is destroyed. Thank heavens none of the dogs were hurt. Little Shelter is in desperate need of immediate donations (large or small) in order to rebuild and continue their wonderful rescue work and community outreach programs. Call 631.368.8770 or visit little www.shelter.com to make a donation. Do you have a Hurricane Sandy story you’d like to share? Long or short, furry or feathered, happy or sad - please send them to me for publication. Please be safe and warm, visit a shelter and adopt. Remember, Your Best Friend Is Waiting....

and family. The evening’s features of note were a runway show sponsored by Runway Couture, Let’s Accessorize and Lets Bag It, where many of the models were themselves breast cancer survivors, and an address by Dr. Ruth Oratz, premier oncologist at New York University’s Langone Medical Center, who emphasized that while medical help is crucial for those suffering, care and support from the community is even more important. Outstanding vocalist Julien Harris entertained the crowd to the musical accompaniment of Justin Neugeboren, both of whom are seniors at Kennedy High School. In her address to the audience, Mrs. Chanie Kramer, co-director of Chabad of Merrick and cochair of Journey for a Purpose, emphasized the spiritual significance of Circle of Hope: “When we want to connect with G-d, when we wish to become holier and better people, helping another person is the way we accomplish that.” For updates on future Chabad events and programs, visit www.CircleofHopeMerrick .org or ChabadJewishLife.org.

EXPRESSING APPRECIATION - The NuHealth staff expressed their appreciation to the entire Disaster Medical Assistance Team for their support and hard work during this past week in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. The group supplemented the NUMC staff, as the census had increased by almost two hundred patients after the hurricane. Since the group had expressed a desire for New York pizza, staff ordered twenty-two pizza pies as a farewell gift to the 45 members of the DMAT group along with some of the NuHealth staff that had worked alongside with them.

During and after Hurricane Sandy, Nassau Community College has been proud to play a significant role in providing relief to victims and evacuees. The College is currently the host site of the largest evacuation center in Nassau County, which is located in the Physical Education Building. That center is administered by the American Red Cross. NCC also hosts a special medical needs shelter, administered by the Nassau County Department of Health. Several agencies of the Federal government have utilized space in the College Union Building, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Small Business Administration and the Department of Health and Human Services. The students, faculty, administrators and staff of the College - some of whom have been victims of the storm themselves - have also been organizing donations and volunteering their time to assist victims of the storm. Many have

brought clothes, toiletries and other items to the shelters located on campus to provide for evacuees. Others have volunteered to help sort these items. NCC’s Student Government Association has been of great help in organizing donation efforts on campus. “We all recognize that this is a time of special need for our county and its people, and we stand ready to be part of that effort,” said Dr. Kenneth Saunders, Officer in Charge of Nassau Community College. “So many have worked in different and yet equally real ways, both as individuals and collective groups, to make the College’s response to Hurricane Sandy a tremendously caring and effective effort.” Michael Duarte, NCC Shelter Manager for the American Red Cross, agreed, and said, “The College has been terrific. It has helped us in so many ways. We recognize the sacrifice that Nassau Community College has made for us.” The Nassau County

Department of Health “has had an excellent partnership with Nassau Community College during these challenging times,” according to Carolyn McCummings, Shelter Manager. “NCC has gone above and beyond what it has been called to do, and it has been a tremendous help to us.” Linda Garrow, Disaster Assistance Center Manager for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, noted that “Nassau Community College has been e x t r e m e l y accommodating to us.” She said NCC officials have demonstrated overwhelming compassion for Hurricane Sandy’s victims. “We have found that the College has been incredibly supportive,” said Bill Mastrianni, Commander of the Federal Disaster Medical Assistance team (DMAT). DMAT works closely with state and local health and medical officials before and after any disaster.

Holiday Help Island Harvest is partnering with Panera Bread to help those hit hard by Hurricane Sandy and Long Islanders who are hungry. With the holidays almost upon us, Panera Bread will serve as a designated drop-off site for Island Harvest’s annual Turkey & Trimmings Collection Campaign, a lifeline for many families in need in the aftermath of Sandy and for hundreds of thousands of Long Islanders who struggle to put food on the table. To lend a helping hand this holiday season, Panera Bread is asking its neighbors to donate frozen turkeys,

supermarket turkey coupons and nonperishable food items at any of its 22 Long Island bakery-cafes on or before December 24th. According to Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest, nearly 300,000 Long Islanders, including 110,000 children struggle with food insecurity. That’s 1 out of every 10 Long Islanders and with the recent devastation those numbers have grown. “Donations of frozen turkeys, turkey coupons and non-perishable food items will be welcomed at our bakery-cafes in Nassau

Fessler even displayed her own wig to the audience, and made the first donation to the wig bank. In her address to the women, Cindy Knoll, cochair of the evening and breast cancer survivor, explained her connection to Circle of Hope: “I now want to inspire and serve others as I move forward in my life with an even greater sense of purpose. On October 25th, Chabad of MerrickBellmore-Wantagh made history, by hosting its first annual Journey for a Purpose, a women’s evening in support of those who face breast cancer. Over 300 women from across Merrick, Bellmore, Wantagh and Long Island attended the event. The evening was also the launch of Circle of Hope, a unique organization providing resources for breast cancer patients, their families and the community in the form of financial assistance, emotional support and preventative health seminars. The entire region was so impressed with the Circle of Hope project that legislator Dave Denenberg declared October 25th, “Circle of Hope Day.” “What an amazing event put together to honor and help those suffering from breast cancer in our community. Everything was organized, beautiful and appropriate. I hope that the Circle of Hope continues with its message for many years,” said Nadine Kaufman of Merrick. By donating to the Bethpage Disaster Relief Fund, your financial contribution will be matched by Bethpage and distributed by the United Way of Long Island to provide strong, local support to our friends and families in need.” “The United Way of Long Island is proud to once again partner with Bethpage Federal Credit Union to support Long Island during this time of crisis,” said Theresa Regnate, President & CEO, United Way of Long Island. “By matching 100 percent of the donations, every dollar contributed

will have a more significant impact and allow us to help even more families in need. We thank Bethpage for their support, and hope this sets a model for additional businesses and organizations to pledge support moving forward.” If people need support information in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, visit the free, confidential Long Island regional helpline, 2-1-1 at www.211longisland.org. Now 100 percent operational, with all 26 branches open for business and fully up-tospeed, Bethpage is also working to quickly review new loan applications and requests to modify existing loans to help our community members get access to the money they need to rebuild and repair. Bethpage is offering special emergency home equity loans, auto loans, lines of credit and credit cards. To discuss your financial options to help get through this crisis, visit a local Bethpage branch or call 800.628.7070.

Vet-Connect

For More Information Call: 631-226-2636 - www.theneighbornewspapers.com

Vet Connect – a webbased initiative to raise awareness about the employment, health, and resource needs of veterans on Long Island, particularly returning veterans – is live today, just in time for Veteran’s Day. This public awareness initiative is the work of the NassauSuffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) and its member hospitals. NSHC is the association that represents these hospitals on a variety of hospital and health care legislative and regulatory issues. The initiative underscores hospitals’ recognition of the extraordinary service veterans have made to this country and hospitals’ commitment to assisting veterans with their

employment and health care needs. Vet Connect is being coordinated by NSHC’s Communications Committee and hospital human resource directors. Vet Connect can be accessed via NSHC’s home page at www.nshc.org. Once users click on the Vet Connect icon, they are brought to interior pages that provide direct links to hospitals’ job banks, military skills translation assistance, and health care career training programs for veterans. The service is also accessible via hospitals’ websites. Look for the Vet Connect logo. “Our hospitals recognize the extraordinary service our veterans have made to our country,” said Kevin Dahill, president/CEO of NSNC. “All of our

hospitals are committed to assisting veterans with their employment and health care needs. Vet Connect is a simple to use, one-stop resource for veterans that puts helpful information at their fingertips.” Phil Moschitta, director of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Northport, says a service like this is needed now more than ever. “It’s so reassuring to have the support of hospitals and health care leaders from across Long Island. Our veterans made great sacrifices to serve our nation and their high ideals to commitment and honor make them exemplary employees,” said Moschitta.

Funds Raised For Families The North Shore-LIJ Health System announced today it has raised about $2.3 million for a relief fund that will be used primarily to benefit hundreds of employees’ families devastated by Hurricane Sandy. Within 48 hours of landfall, the 16-hospital health system had placed 62 families into temporary housing, and those efforts have continued for hundreds of additional employees who were displaced. In addition, through the health system’s dedicated Emergency Employee Resource Center (EERC), North Shore-LIJ employees have already contributed over 1,000 vacation hours – totaling 137 business days – to impacted employees who will need to take time off to try to get their lives back in order. The EERC also has an online Community Forum where employees who want to help their coworkers in need can connect with them to coordinate direct donations, rides to work and other assistance. “Considering how so many North Shore-LIJ employees care for their

patients during their critical hours of need, we’re proud to step up and take care of our colleagues when they need it most,” said Michael Dowling, president and chief executive officer of North Shore-LIJ. “Even after Hurricane Sandy left death and destruction in her wake, there are untold stories of North Shore-LIJ caregivers who continued to come to work, despite losing their homes and most of their possessions to flooding and fires. Their extraordinary selfsacrifice, dedication and commitment are truly inspiring. Equally inspiring is the outpouring of support from North Shore-LIJ employees for their struggling coworkers. I extend my deepest appreciation to all of our employees who have generously donated money and time off to their colleagues in need.” Hundreds of North Shore-LIJ employees have already benefited from the health system’s employee relief efforts. Following are a few of their stories. Of the $2.3 million pledged thus far for relief

efforts, about $2 million represent the proceeds from Monday evening’s Lenox Hill Autumn Ball at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Manhattan. Event proceeds typically go toward the hospital’s capital projects, but in the wake of Hurricane Sandy and the destruction it caused throughout the tristate area, Mr. Dowling decided to redirect funds from the event toward North Shore-LIJ’s employee relief fund, as well as charities supporting other hurricane victims in the community. Those wishing to support the effort can send a donation by check payable to the North Shore-LIJ Hurricane Sandy Employee Relief Fund and mail it to: NSLIJ Health System Foundation, 125 Community Drive, Great Neck, NY, 11021, or contribute on line at: https://support.northshor elij.com/sandyrelief. To learn about other ways to assist, go to: www.northshorelijhelps.c om.

Helping Sandy’s Victims Hicks Nurseries, in partnership with Long Island Cares, is a distribution point for food and donations for storm victims. From now through the end of the year, the nursery will be collecting items to help Long Islanders in need. Items in particular need are bottled water, pouch drinks, new blankets, hats, gloves, scarves, underwear, household cleaners, personal care items, pet food and nonperishable food. These items can be brought to the nursery, which is located at 100 Jericho Turnpike in Westbury, seven days a week for fast delivery to Long Island Cares for

redistribution. Store hours are Saturday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., open late on Fridays until 8 p.m. “For six generations, Hicks Nurseries and my family have been part of the Long Island community and the one thing that has been continuous over time is the will of Long Islanders to help each other get their lives back to normal in the wake of trying events,” says Stephen Hicks, president of Hicks Nurseries. “This recovery will be no different. Thank you for helping us to help.” Hicks Nurseries, Long Island’s largest garden nursery (established by

the Hicks family in 1853), is located at 100 Jericho Turnpike in Westbury; 5 1 6 . 3 3 4 . 0 0 6 6 ; www.hicksnurseries.com; http://www.facebook.com/ hicksnurseries The nursery is handicap accessible throughout.

Help For Veterans Today, just as when it began in 1945, the Blinded Veterans Association (BVA) serves as a bright beacon of light for blinded veterans and their families. BVA's services are available to any U.S. military veteran who is legally blind. Call (800) 669-7079 or visit www.bva.org.

Housing Relief

ith the post-Hurricane Sandy nor’easter bearing down on Long Island on November 7th, an out-ofstate tree-trimming crew in need of housing found a warm welcome - not to mention comfortable sleeping quarters, hot meals and showers - at Mercy Medical Center. The team from Storm Services, LLC, was brought to Long Island by National Grid to clear trees from power lines to facilitate restoration of electricity knocked out by Sandy. When the two

dozen workers from Texas, Colorado and Florida contacted Mercy about the need for shelter from the gathering nor’easter, they stated, “The hospital just said to come on down and rolled out the red carpet for us.” Mercy’s Environmental Services Department quickly and efficiently set up dormitory space near the hospital’s Emergency Department. It was the second time Mercy’s environmental services team was called to action to set up temporary

shelter during the ongoing weather emergency. In advance of the hurricane, the hospital took in 40 patients evacuated from Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip and 25 patients evacuated from a nursing home in Long Beach. Good Samaritan’s patients were returned to that facility shortly after Sandy passed, but Mercy has continued to provide housing for the nursing home patients more than a week after the storm.
