January 2013 marks the 80th Anniversary of the Long Island Blue Jays Junior Drum Inc., making this corps the second oldest continuous drum and bugle corps in the state of New York. Over the years, they have been helping youth, ages 1019, with advancement in playing brass and percussion instruments in the field of marching music. Some of these members want to learn to play a second instrument, while others are beginners with no musical experience. They are currently recruiting members for the corps. For the small fee of $15 per year, the student will receive lessons, both private and with the group, from the teaching staff, which has a combined experience of over 100 years of drum corps. Also, they provide the instruments so that you can practice at home. If you would like to be a part of this musical tradition on Long Island, you can contact 631.589.5047 for additional information.

Students in kindergarten through fifth grade at Kramer Lane Elementary School in Bethpage “filled their buckets” with a special presentation by Carol McCloud, author of Have You Filled A Bucket Today? The book’s premise, which also serves as a character education component for the school, is that everyone walks
into other’s buckets,” and with the challenge to fill the bucket of someone special that day. Teachers, who had already been implementing some of the
which she thoroughly explained how to fill someone else’s bucket as well as their own. “I saw hearts and stars filling this room because everyone’s buckets were so full,” Ms. McCloud told the group of K-2 students. Students left the workshop with rules such as “be a bucketfiller” and “do your best not to dip
“bucketfiller” analogies into their classrooms, were trained as part of a professional development series by Ms. McCloud, as well. The instructor workshop taught teachers how to utilize bucketfiller vocabulary and tactics to make their school year one of the most rewarding ever for their students and themselves.

To help support the efforts of the U.S. Marines Toys for Tots program to bring holiday cheer to those children whose families were hard hit by Hurricane Sandy, Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar restaurants in Nassau and Suffolk counties will hold Breakfast with Santa at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 8th. Advanced reservations are required and a limited number of tickets are available for a $10 per person donation. Children under two are admitted free. Guests receive breakfast compliments of Applebee’s, goodies, raffle tickets for door prizes and will have the opportunity to take a photo with Santa (bring a camera). One-hundred percent of the proceeds will go to U.S. Marine Corps Toys for
Tots Program and will help brighten the holidays for local families devastated by the recent storm. Applebee’s on Long Island and participating restaurants in New Jersey have raised a combined total of over $2.7 million for Toys for Tots over the past 13 years. Dollars raised in each community benefit that local community. To raise additional funds for the U.S. Marine Corps program, Applebee’s is also offering paper “gift packages” for $1 each that will be prominently displayed in the restaurant. To purchase tickets to Breakfast with Santa, while seats are available, call or stop by your local Applebee’s today. To find a participating Applebee’s in your neighborhood, visit www.applebees.com.

Join The Madness I used to be one of those people who avoided shopping like the plague. And Black Friday shopping? Well, that was an event reserved exclusively for those truly insane individuals hell bent on camping out for some amazing sale or another. Not me. Not ever. And yet… Last year was my first venture into the madness. Considering I hate shopping in general, crowds even more, and don’t even bother to compose a Christmas list until the first week of December – I
would say I handled it pretty well. Great sales, manageable crowds = many purchases for moi. This year, what with the aftermath of the storm and a general lack of festiveness, Christmas shopping was among the last things on my mind. But then I thought – retail therapy…couldn’t hurt, could it? Nothing brings a smile to most peoples’ faces like new “stuff,” whether desperately needed or not. Sure it’s frivolous. Unnecessary even. But who cares? At a certain point, we owe it to ourselves to do whatever it is that brings us pleasure
and takes our mind off the more serious issues at hand. All the problems will still be there come morning, believe me. No sense dwelling on reality. Rather, try your best to turn any negatives into positives whenever possible. Idealistic? Sure. But the holidays are a time for idealism if ever there was one. A time for making wishes and hoping they come true, for starting over and for appreciating everyone and everything just a little bit more... And if shopping helps accomplish even one of these tasks, then so be it. Retail therapy it is!

The hospital is requesting 200-500 word narratives, along with photos or keepsakes that can be photographed and returned to the owners, for inclusion in the journal. Everyone was worried the devastation blew our minds The memories were safe but the pictures were left behind Houses were flooded some burned to the ground Trying to save belongings but most precious items could not be found The community came together from every walk of life To help our fellow neighbors try to escape their strife Enemies became friends and new friendships were made The blueprints of new houses are soon going to be laid

The 2013 Town Calendar will soon be mailed to all Oyster Bay Town residents, featuring photos submitted by Town residents. If you enjoy photography and would like to see your photos published in future Town publications, Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Beth Faughnan invites you to submit photos at any time for consideration. “The annual Town Calendar and Summer Guide are just two examples of Town literature featuring photos submitted by Town residents,” Councilwoman Faughnan said. “We look for photos of all seasons, so I invite everyone to start taking pictures, or go through photos you’ve already taken, depicting the people, places, community events and scenery reflective of the spirit and beauty of the Town of Oyster Bay for use in upcoming Town publications. And don’t think you have to wait until warmer weather to start snapping. Winter presents photo
opportunities that are unique and totally different from the rest of the seasons. Photographers who are willing to brave the cold can find some inspiring subject matter, especially after a snowfall.” The Councilwoman went on to say that photos must be taken within the confines of the Town of Oyster Bay. Digital submissions are preferred, but professionally developed photos, not inkjet printouts, may also be submitted. E-mailed photos, preferably in a jpeg format, should be sent to the Town’s Public Information Office at mkane@oysterbay-ny.gov. Printed photographs should be mailed to Oyster Bay Town Hall, Attention Public Information Office, Calendar Photo Submissions, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay NY 11771. Entrants will be notified if their photos are selected for the calendar. Residents should make sure their name, address, phone number and photo description accompany
the photograph. Do not write in ink on the back of the picture. The photographer is responsible for the correct spelling of the names of the subjects in the photos, as well as notifying subjects that their picture may appear in a Town of Oyster Bay calendar or other Town material. You may be asked to supply a waiver if your photo is selected. “The Town of Oyster Bay is a photographer’s dream, and the upcoming winter, spring, summer and early fall will provide great opportunities to take beautiful pictures,” Councilwoman Faughnan said. “In addition to our many parks and beaches, the Town of Oyster Bay boasts a wealth of historic sites, museums and other places of interest that could be the subject of a great photo. So, whether photography is your passion, your hobby, or just an occasional pastime, grab your camera, go outside and start snapping.”

In an effort to assist residents with post-storm cleanup efforts, the Town of Oyster Bay, in conjunction with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has set up a location for residents to bring their household hazardous waste materials, according to Town Supervisor John Venditto. Now through Friday, November 30th, residents can visit the Town’s Solid Waste Disposal Complex, Bethpage-Sweet Hollow Road in Old Bethpage, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, to safely dispose of unwanted hazardous pollutants. “The significant cleanup process following Hurricane Sandy has the potential to be hazardous to our environment,” Supervisor Venditto said. “With many residents cleaning up or, in some cases, cleaning out their homes, there may be a large amount of household hazardous waste that many residents may not be aware how to dispose of properly and safely.” Items which can be brought to the drop-off site include those permitted at a typical Town S.T.O.P. (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants) Day, such as solvents, drain and oven cleaners, spot removers, small aerosol cans, rechargeable and button batteries, compact fluorescent bulbs, thermostats, paint, motor oil, antifreeze, and outdoor gas grill propane tanks. For additional information, contact the Town Department of Environmental Resources at 516.677.5943, or visit the Town’s website, www.oysterbaytown.com. CIDER MAKING - Nothing says autumn like apple cider! Students at Kramer Lane Elementary School in the Bethpage School District had the opportunity to press their very own apple cider, under the guidance of instructors from Nassau BOCES. The program included a brief introduction that recapped the history of apple cider, the many different types and tastes of apples, and how the pressing process works. Students then actively participated in the prepping and pressing of apples to create cider, followed by a chance to sample the cider they help press.
