Pinking The Rink he Bethpage Eagles Varsity Ice Hockey team took on the Syosset Braves in their annual Pink The Rink game to benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Research Foundation. As a result of the fundraiser, which required team members to wear pink, over $600 in donations was raised at the game. The spirited and generous Bethpage fans showed up, also sporting pink, to root on their team. Thanks to all who turned out in support.

It was an “out-of-thisworld” celebration on November 30th at Bethpage High School, as K-5 students enjoyed the district’s 9th Annual Astronomy Night. The grade school students, along with their families and under the guidance of high schoolage student-volunteers, had the opportunity to select up to three astronomy-based workshops, including Space Bingo, Star-nival,
Space Scouts and other unique options. A Starlab digital planetarium was also on display, where students were able to view a multimedia presentation full of amazing facts and anecdotes about the night sky. Among the other notable workshops were Solar System Jewelry, where students created interplanetary bracelets featuring the solar system, and a Storytime stop for students to learn about

Students also enjoyed Hollywood Planets, a game showthemed workshop where contestants sought advice from the audience on questions about astronomy.

their hi-beam glow. Are you afraid of the dark? Is that the issue? Are the dozens of streetlights and headlights from your fellow motorists simply not enough to guide the way? Perhaps nighttime driving is not for you. We all do stupid things from time to time. Whether from distraction or a momentary lapse in judgement, these things happen. But when you are operating a piece of machinery capable of taking another human life, perhaps we should do our best to keep these idiotic idiosyncrasies to a minimum. Pay attention, put the phone away, save your makeup application, shaving and hairstyling for another time… oh, and when the sign says “Lane Ends,” believe it. Sincerely, Your Fellow Driver

As a result of my daily commute having been recently increased from 15 minutes to anywhere from 45 minutes (on a good day) to… oh, let’s say an hour plus on a normal morning during rush hour, I have had the overwhelming privilege to observe the shenanigans of one of our favorites: the fellow motorist. And here I thought residential, stop-and-go driving was bad. To be clear, there is a certain nuance to the pleasure of trailing behind a line of school buses, to the point that you manage to hit every single stop sign and traffic light within a five-mile stretch. And let’s not forget the classic inching forward while reading street signs – oh wait, I wanted to turn three blocks back…let’s just throw the car in reverse, why don’t we.
But that’s nothing compared to highway and parkway driving. Head out to the open roads, and it’s a whole new ballgame. There are those who feel the need to merge at speeds approaching 70 miles per hour, all the while paying no attention to the speed you may be approaching at. Make way, because they’re coming regardless! Then there are the people who seem to have an aversion to using that shoulder portion leading up to an exit ramp, instead preferring to come to a screeching halt right in their lane – your lane – as they contemplate whether this is really where they need to get off. Umm… drive much? Oh, but let’s not forget my favorite – those who make a habit of driving at night with their brights on, blinding all those in front of them with

Catholic Health Services (CHS), in collaboration with Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano and Nassau County Health Commissioner Lawrence Eisenstein, MD, provided free tetanus and flu vaccines recently to emergency responders as well as to residents in hurricane ravaged Island Park. Catholic Health Services free community outreach program, Healthy Sundays, supported by nursing staff from member hospitals St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center, Mercy Medical Center and Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, administered the injections to ensure the safety and protection of individuals who continue to work in areas hardest hit by the storm. Dozens of CHS employees, many of whom were impacted by the hurricane themselves, volunteered their time and skill to provide the tetanus and flu vaccines. “In the wake of the devastation following Hurricane Sandy, we remained focused on ensuring the health and wellness of individuals in the communities impacted by this storm, said Joel Yohai, MD, Executive Vice President, Medical Affairs, Chief Medical Officer, CHS. “Catholic Health Services couldn’t be more proud to collaborate with County Executive Mangano and Dr. Eisenstein in delivering critically important tetanus immunizations to Island Park emergency responders. As they continue to work to restore these neighborhoods, they can do so knowing they are protected against this serious bacterial infection. “Protecting the health and safety of our emergency responders is a priority, said County Executive Mangano. “This partnership with Catholic Health Services assured that our emergency responders who are performing cleanup work as result of super storm Sandy receive the necessary protection. Additional information on tetanus is available on the New York State Department of Health website: http://www.health.ny.gov/dise ases/communicable/tetanus/f act_sheet.htm

support of the many programs and services DDI provides to children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities. DDI was also pleased to honor students who have been active participants in the school age vocational services in the Children’s Day Program. For three or more years, these students have participated in community based volunteer activities, which are meant to help the students prepare for future employment opportunities, increased socialization experiences, and the ability to lead productive and satisfying lives in adulthood. DDI was proud to honor these students, as well as the Transition/Vocational Coordinator, Doris Frisenda, who has worked tirelessly for over 17 years to provide this opportunity for the students enrolled in DDI’s Children’s Day Program.

President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD. “Their meritorious work not only serves the University, but it serves society by pushing the frontiers of scientific advancement, research and discovery in engineering and the sciences.” The tradition of AAAS Fellows began in 1874. Currently, members can be considered for the rank of Fellow if nominated by the steering groups of the Association’s 24 sections, or by any three Fellows who are current AAAS members (so long as two of the three sponsors are not affiliated with the nominee's institution), or by the AAAS chief executive officer. Each steering group then reviews the nominations of individuals within its respective section and a final list is forwarded to the AAAS Council, which votes on the aggregate list.

As a proud sponsor of Z100’s Jingle Ball, Huntington Learning Center announces their Overcome Adversity Contest winner. Casey Esbin of New City, NY was recently announced as the VIP winner of the contest. As the winner, Casey will be receiving from Huntington and Z100 an 8-pack of Meet & Greets with an artist at the Z100 and Coca-Cola All Access Lounge Pre-Show event, an Artist Sound Check experience for eight people and an 8-pack of VIP seats to Z100’s Jingle Ball concert on Friday, December 7th, 2012 at Madison Square Garden. As her contest entry, Casey described how she overcame adversity in her math class. She had struggled in math since 7th grade, but didn’t want to accept her grades and refused to continue her “C” average. With the help of her tutors, she increased her grades. Now that she is in 11th grade, she succeeded at taking math a year above her grade level due to her rapid progression. Huntington Learning Center is also sponsoring Z100 and Coca-Cola’s All Access Lounge Pre-show Event on Friday, December 7th. The action-packed event will be held at the Hammerstein Ballroom from 12 noon to 6 p.m. Visitors to Huntington’s booth will have a final chance to win sold-out seats to Z100’s Jingle Ball that night.

Local Salon Raises Funds Top Cuts Salon held their 4th Annual Cut-A-Thon on Saturday, October 22nd, in Bethpage. Customers, family and friends gathered for haircuts, food, raffles and a Chinese auction to raise money for Beauty For A Cure, a foundation that benefits local Long Island breast cancer charities. For Christina Amato-Smith, owner of Top Cuts and host of the Cut-A-Thon, raising money for women with breast cancer is an effort dear to her. Smith was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer in 2008, “I am driven by a calling. I have been given a second chance at life and I need to make a difference,” said Smith. After chemo-therapy and numerous surgeries, she was declared cancer free in 2011. Smith is also founder of Beauty For a Cure, a foundation she established in 2009. 100 percent of their funds (to date, Over $70,000) benefit local breast cancer coalitions that focus on providing services directly to the individuals battling the disease rather than to research. “It’s not that research isn’t important, but the women on Long Island need the help,” explained Smith. Beauty for a Cure donates to organizations like Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition, Lean on Me Coalition, and Long Beach Breast Cancer Coalition that focus on the women themselves. “It keeps them running their life at a norm when they are going through it,” said Smith. During her fight with breast cancer Smith had help from Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition, “This [Cut-AThon] is me and my staff’s way to give back.” This year the Cut- A-Thon raised 10,000 dollars for Beauty for a Cure. New and regular customers booked the salon full for the day. “It’s the best thing, it’s amazing what they do,” said Barbara Evans, a regular customer at TopCuts.
“She’s an amazing individual,” said Christine, Smith’s friend since grammar school who stood beside her during her battle. “She is so inspirational. It’s amazing something unfortunate happened and what she turned it around to be.” In addition to the proceeds from hair services for the day the Cut-A-Thon raffled off donated items from clients, local businesses and other supporters, some of the items valued up to 700 dollars.
“I’m really honored by the support I get from the community as well as my family and friends, everyone comes together, it puts meaning behind what you do,” said Smith. Raffles included Disney park passes, a signed Islanders Jersey, and a 500 dollar diamond ring. People beyond the local community also joined the Cut-A-Thon. Jennifer Cherry, a Pennsylvania consultant for the cosmetic company Mary Kay, decided to participate in the Cut-A-Thon after hearing about it through Facebook. After being diagnosed with breast cancer at the young age of 21, Cherry found Beauty for a Cure’s cause close to the heart. “Cancer awareness is my heart’s desire, that and making women feel beautiful,” said Cherry who sold products at the event and donated 20 percent of the proceeds to the cause.
Smith’s family and friends helped raise money at the event by selling raffle tickets, t-shirts and other items. Among them, Smith’s mother, Rose Amato and husband Gerry Smith. “It [the Cut-A-Thon] gets bigger every year,” said Gerry Smith who has watched his wife’s efforts grow. “Unfortunately, it takes something like that [breast cancer] to open up your eyes.” After losing a son earlier in life Rose Amato feared the worse when her daughter was diagnosed. But, “She was a fighter and now she wants to give back to all the organizations that gave to her,” she said. “Everyone here is very supportive; her staff is 100 percent there for her every time she does this.” Christina Smith’s staff, some of which have watched her overcome a disease that so many cannot, volunteer their time and pay to support their boss for the fundraiser. “It was devastating,” Joann Cairo said of when the Smith was diagnosed with breast cancer, “I was there with the family in the hospital. It’s amazing what she is doing now.” The staff wore matching shirts with a heart shaped breast cancer ribbon on the back that Smith designed, and each invited their own family and friends for support. “I love it, we do so much, we raise so much, and it’s fun,” said Carmella Cascio-Oakey, a stylist at TopCuts for 4 years. Smith also organizes other events in the community to raise money for Beauty for a Cure, including a 5K “Walk For Hope” and “Lax for Hope” an all-girls lacrosse tournament. Letter Of Intent
YOUTH SINGING CHAMPS - Eleven year-old, Krisia Romano, right, of Hicksville Middle School, won second place in the 2012 Nassau Youth Singing Contest sponsored by Healthfirst and NuHealth/Nassau University Medical Center. She competed amongst 24 finalists at the grand finale held on December 1st in Hempstead at Circulo de la Hispanidad. The third annual contest was open to Nassau County residents ages 9-18 and drew almost 200 registrants competing for cash prizes. Krisia received $400 for her second place win in the Youth Group for ages 9-13.
Ryan Mahon, a senior student-athlete at Bethpage High School, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play lacrosse at Stony Brook University in the fall. The star lacrosse player has held a starting position on the high school team since he was a freshman and will serve as
the team captain this season. In addition, Ryan volunteer coaches for a local elementary lacrosse team and participates in the Long Island Under Armour Lacrosse League. Ryan was joined at the signing by head coach Irwin Dill, assistant coach Roddy McCoy, Athletic Director John Franchi,
High School Principal Michael Spence and parents Laura and Gene Mahon. “He’s an outstanding and highly skilled player,” Coach Dill said of Ryan, who is also an honor student. Ryan intends to major in health sciences in college.
from home. “I hope you continue to meet the high expectations we have for you,” said Principal Brijinder Singh in her opening comments. “We are extremely proud of you. The hard work that has gotten you here will take you further.” Gracing the ceremony stage were over 160 new inductees who will now combine with existing group members to create a roster of over 250 honor society members in the district. Many students belong to more than one honor society. In order to be
considered for induction into a society, students must meet stringent academic grade standards, be recommended by teachers and participate in community service. As part of the ceremony, each honor society presented one teacher from that academic discipline with a special award. The honorees were English teacher Carolann Higgins, science teacher Dr. Pnina Powell, math teacher Brian Stanley and social studies teacher Christopher Robson.
You Can’t Take It with You, a Pulitzer Prizewinning comedic play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, was presented by the Hicksville High School Repertory Company in a performance true to the original production. The three-act play, first staged in the late 1930s, focuses a critical eye on
taxes, politics, the arts and a variety of other societal topics from the perspective of a seemingly dysfunctional family that ultimately appears clearheaded as the script progresses. The underlying message is as relevant today as it was back then. This production was directed by Dena Cinque,

The overall academic versatility and prowess of Hicksville High School students were once again allowed to shine at the academic honor society inductions held in the auditorium. Hicksville boasts thriving mathematics, science, English and social studies honor societies. “I am so proud that we established these chapters in our district to recognize your achievements,” said Superintendent of Schools Maureen Bright in her address to parents. Kramer Lane Elementary School in the Bethpage School District has been selected by the New York State Education Department as a state nominee for the National 2013 Blue Ribbon School Award. The nomination, which is for the category of “Exemplary High Performing School,” is based on Kramer Lane’s 2012 English language arts and mathematics assessment scores. Exemplary High Performing Schools are ranked among the best performing schools in the state. The entire school’s test scores must meet or
exceed the average of the state’s cut scores at the 85th percentile for all grades tested in both reading and math. Districtwide, fourth-grade Bethpage students ranked No. 1 in Nassau County for their ELA scores and No. 5 for math, while thirdgraders were ranked No. 5 in the county for ELA and No. 12 for math. "I could not be happier and more excited about the nomination,” Principal McCarthy said of the honor. “Kramer Lane is certainly deserving of such an honor. The teachers and students here put forth 110 percent
each and every day, as evidenced by not only our success on state assessments, but also by the success students experience on a daily basis. It is wonderful to be a part of such a supportive community where learning is paramount.” Kramer Lane is one of approximately 19 schools in the state that have been nominated for this national award. Ms. McCarthy must now submit an application to the U.S. Department of Education’s Blue Ribbon Award Committee by midFebruary.
skaters at this show,” Supervisor Venditto said. “Spectators are sure to marvel at their grace and athleticism.” In addition, the talents of students who participate in the Town’s figure skating program will also be showcased. The event will also feature a friendly match between the Elves vs. the Reindeers, members of the Town’s ‘Tot Hockey’ team. To help bring overseas troops a feeling of home during this holiday season, the Town is taking part in the American Red Cross ‘Holiday Mail for Heroes’ Program. Holiday greeting cards will be available in the lobby for residents to fill out prior to and during the show. “Sending a touch of home to American men and women who serve our country is the perfect way to express your appreciation and support during the holiday season,” Supervisor Venditto said. “I ask each person who comes to this event to take time out to write out a card to be sent to our service men and
women who protect our freedom. It will certainly help make their holiday a little bit brighter.” A visit from Santa will round out the event, and children will be able to visit with Santa following the show if parents or family members would like to take a photo. The Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center is located centrally at 1001 Stewart Ave. in Bethpage. The indoor facility offers a full service snack shop, a pro shop and a fireplace to warm yourself by. They also offer year-round lessons and hockey instruction. The 6 to 8 p.m. Public Skating session at the Center will not be available due to the show. However both the Town’s outdoor rinks, located at Marjorie R. Post Community Park in Massapequa and at Syosset-Woodbury Park, will be open. For more information about the event, call 516.433.RINK or visit www.oysterbaytown.com.

Exemplary Nomination
Town of Oyster Bay residents and their families are invited to come out and kick-off the holiday season by attending the third annual free Holiday On Ice Show at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center. According to Supervisor John Venditto, on Saturday, December 15th, from 6 to 8 p.m., the center’s skating students will do choreographed routines to music. Admission is free but residents are encouraged to help others by donating two canned goods, which will be collected at the event by Island Harvest. Some of the country’s most outstanding skating talent will be performing at the show, adding their own artistic flair to the evening’s festivities. Among those expected to perform will be Senior Ladies National Competitor Joelle Forte, Junior National Pairs Medalists Darbie Burke and Griffin Schwab and Junior National Competitor Emmy Ma. “The Town is fortunate have such accomplished
