initiative is a project to help high-risk adolescents in crisis. Called Project HELP (Hospitals Empowering Lifelines through Peers), this program is aimed at helping to support the work of the Long Island Crisis Center by getting the Center’s hotline number into every teenager’s cell phone. Ms. Bert also helped develop a pediatric asthma program in 2008, in conjunction with the Asthma Coalition of Long Island, to improve the health and wellness of children suffering with this respiratory condition. A true example of nursing collaboration with interdisciplinary colleagues and community leaders, the program involves pharmacy, social services, home care and child life. Ms. Bert was recently certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) as a Nurse Executive (NE-BC). She is a member of the Sigma Theta Tau, the American Nurse’s Association, the New York Organization of Nurse Executives and is currently pursuing her advanced degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner at Molloy College.
The Bethpage High School Student Civic Association will be presenting its annual Talent Show on Thursday, January 10th, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The event will be held at Bethpage High School’s Center for the Performing Arts, located at 10 Cherry Avenue in Bethpage. All adult tickets are $5 with a donation of a nonperishable food item. Without a food donation, ticket cost is $8. Children under 12 are $3. All canned goods will be benefiting Island Harvest, and 100 percent of the proceeds will go to the Nassau County Hurricane Recovery Fund. The event will be an evening of family fun and enjoyment, featuring celebrity judges Rocky from WBAB radio and rock musician Jessie Kinch.

South Nassau Communities Hospital is pleased to announce that Lynn Bert, Nurse Manager for Pediatrics, was recently named a “Nurse Hero” and honored by Long Island Business News with a “Health Care Heroes” award at a breakfast at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. LIBN’s “Health Care Heroes” awards honor individuals and organizations in the health-care industry in Nassau and Suffolk counties for outstanding leadership and commitment. As Nurse Manager, Ms. Bert participates in and oversees operations of the Pediatric Unit at South Nassau Communities
Hospital. She maintains quality function, and assures outcome and satisfaction for the pediatric patients, as well as their families. She participates on the hospital’s Safety Committee, Family Violence Committee and offers support to the perinatal bereavement patients. She also promotes self-governance for her pediatric staff, encouraging them to join multi-disciplinary committees and participate in organizational decision making. Under her leadership, South Nassau’s Pediatric Unit has formed a strong Unit-Based Council. She also recently assumed oversight of the support staff for South Nassau’s nurses, providing them (most of whom are in nursing school) with a true role model. Ms. Bert co-teaches a monthly Pediatric Update class and also coordinates training for the Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) program. Along with her many responsibilities at the hospital, Ms. Bert extends her caring into the community through a number of innovative programs. Her latest

Little by little, things are beginning to get back on track. There are small signs throughout the neighborhood – a few lights on here and there, the glimmer of a Christmas tree through the window, the sound of Christmas songs filtering from the windows of passing cars… Tis’ the time of the season, as out of sorts as many of us may feel this particular holiday season. Life goes on, as we have seen. From storms and floods and uncontrollable acts of nature, to horrific tragedies from across the globe to our neighbors in Newtown, CT, as much as it seems that things
will never return to normal, somehow, they manage to progress to the point of at least being tolerable. The new normal, I suppose you could say, where we learn to make do while making adjustments on the fly. What is “normal” anyway? Personally, never before have I looked forward to a new year with quite the same level of anticipation. Sure, it’s just a flip of the calendar; but psychologically, there’s nothing quite like saying “good riddance” to a collection of not-so-great circumstances. And so, we look forward. Onward and upward, as they say. There’s nothing like good old-fashioned progress, snail’s-pace as it may be, to

refresh the spirit. For those displaced by Storm Sandy, the phrase “home for the holidays” doesn’t quite apply. But still, just being surrounded by those you love brings a certain degree of comfort that even the most dramatic upheaval can’t displace. Hopefully, within the next few months, the process of rebuilding what was lost will be further along the way to completion, and we can all settle back into our “normal” routines – only this time with a greater appreciation for what we have, mainly those things that cannot be replaced. Happy New Year to all… see you on the flip side.

offerings. “The launch of the web site is tremendous for the NCCYS,” said Peter Levy, President of the NCCYS. “We serve the community, but we are also driven by community support. Now we will be able to create heightened awareness of the NCCYS and further demonstrate the truly innovative programs we offer the youth of Nassau County.” The web site offers insight into the Coalition and its programs. It features a blog and photo gallery with images of youth services programs, workers and participants throughout the county. Most notably, the site offers visitors the opportunity to donate money, which will be utilized to support the work of the participating agencies. Additionally, through crowdfunding technology, donors can share their support with their social networks and through Facebook. “The web site was not only created to increase fundraising, but to raise viral support for the Coalition,” said Adam Haber, Nassau County youth advocate and Roslyn School Board Trustee. “It creates heightened awareness around the very important youth services the NCCYS provides Nassau County and demonstrates the critical role the Coalition plays in ensuring the well-being of our children.” Raising funds, however, is a considerable focus for the 37 member agencies which were hard hit when earlier this year government funding was cut off mid-stream and withheld for six months. “We are hopeful that the new web site will help increase support and, ultimately, help to drive funds that will allow us to continue to provide leading youth services to Nassau County,” said Levy. Holiday Craft Fair On Friday, December 7th,St. Catherine of Siena Nursing & Rehabilitation Care Center, located at 52 Rt. 25A in Smithtown, hosted a Craft Vendor Holiday Fair. This event was held from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the lower level of St. Catherine Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. There was a variety of
vendors selling jewelry, accessories, candles, holiday centerpieces as well as other assorted items. The residents also participated by making handmade bracelets and selling them to raise funds to purchase bicycles for families in need. Due the generosity of staff and visitors enough
money was raised to purchase two bicycles and helmets. This gave the residents a wonderful feeling of giving back to all those who support them throughout the year. This was a great event in which families, staff and community came together for such a great cause.

Dialing Up Savings Many school districts are starting the new year with lower telephone and Internet costs, thanks to their partnership with Nassau BOCES. The significant savings – at least 15 percent per district – are due to the development of one of the largest private fiber optic networks in the country. Called Bo-TIE, this network has already connected 16 of the county’s 56 districts and more than 12 others are scheduled to go online this year. The project is expected to be completed in 2015 – a dream come true for longtime Nassau BOCES administrators who conceived the idea more than a decade ago. When the agency was given the opportunity to lease its educational television channels, Anthony Carfora, Director
of the Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Technology, knew exactly how he wanted to use the funds – giving back to the districts in the form of a dynamic countywide fiber optic network. In just two years, the lease – along with a series of federal educational technology rebates – has generated all of the funds needed to complete the project. “We are excited to be able to provide districts with an opportunity to reduce their costs,” said Pam Christensen, Executive Manager for telecommunications. “Equally important are the security and educational opportunities that a network of this magnitude will be able to provide.” Over time, the network will be configured in a
series of interlocking “rings” that will provide resilience for the districts’ Internet and telephone services. It also will provide a robust, secure network that will allow for communication among buildings and other districts during emergencies. “We’re building it, but believe very strongly that this network belongs to our districts,” said Carfora. “It has enormous potential. We can’t wait to see what innovative ideas our school district’s come up with.” Some topics that are already being discussed include increased opportunities for students to connect to the technological and academic resources necessary for 21st-century success.

HOLIDAY TREE LIGHTING - Nassau County Legislators Joseph Belesi and Rose Marie Walker recently joined together with New York State Assemblyman Joseph Saladino to attend St. Joseph’s Hospital’s Annual Holiday Tree Lighting, located on Hempstead Turnpike in Bethpage.
$28,000 was raised for Hurricane Sandy relief and East Islip also made a $2,500 donation to the EJ Autism Foundation. The Auburndale Soccer Club in Queens collected money for a local family affected by the hurricane. The family has a child that plays for Auburndale, and once they heard that they lost their home and personal belongings, they started a collection at the club’s annual dinner dance. Over $1,100 was raised that night, which was matched by the club. Then a group of five coaches made additional donations to bring the total to $5,000. Auburndale was also able to set up a pick-up location through the club and shipped three truck-loads of clothes and food to Staten Island. Breakaway, a training organization that works with SIYSL clubs, hosted a charity indoor soccer tournament, “Staten Island Soccer Over Sandy.” The tourney was held at the Victory Sports Arena on Veteran’s Day and raised $5,000 for the Staten Island families most affected, including the Dresch family, which lost father George and 13-year-old daughter Angela. Clubs that participated were Notre Dame Academy, Richmondtown, St. John Newman, Silver Lake and Staten Island United. SIYSL club Our Lady Help of Christians hosted 65 teams on December 8th in OLHC’s Playing for Angels tourney. This indoor/outdoor tournament was played at IS34, Angela Dresch’s school. $10,000 was raised for Dresch Family Funds and OLHC Hurricane Relief. Every player received a bracelet and tournament T-shirt in purple, which was Angela’s favorite color.

TOY DONATION - East Meadow Fire Department volunteers took a brief time out from their heroic duties to don a different kind of superhero suit. Jolly old Santa himself and his elves delivered toys to each child on NUMC Pediatrics and spread a little holiday cheer. The volunteer firefighters brought at least one toy per child, hoping to brighten the day for children suffering from various illnesses.
the event so successful.” The Boys-Under-11 West Babylon Pride assisted with food handouts while the parents cooked some hot meals. The team also collected money to help two families on the team that lost household items and one family who lost the first floor of their home. The Girls-Under-11 Manorville Starz adopted their division opponents, the Lindenhurst Lightning. “When they found out about the devastation in our community, their soccer families got together and put together donations for our community,” Lindenhurst Coach Tina Sarnicola said of the Manorville team. “Kristin (Mahoney), their head coach, drove out with an SUV load of donations. She drove out again the next day with donations, and they have also helped arrange a truck from Virginia to come with more supplies.” The Deer Park Soccer Club held a collection drive on Sunday, November 9th at their intramural fields. The donations of food, clothing and household goods were incredible. Through a church in Deer Park, they were able to get the donations to the town of Lindenhurst to distribute to people in need. They also collected $533 which is being donated to the Red Cross. The Bay Shore Soccer Club had a food and coat drive to benefit Hurricane Sandy victims and adopted several local families for Thanksgiving. The East Islip Soccer Club, assisted by the neighboring West Islip Soccer Club, hosted nearly 70 intramural and travel teams on November 18th and 19th in their “Soccer Over Sandy” tournament.

CHARITY FUNDRAISER - Nassau County Legislator’s Joseph Belesi and Rose Marie Walker joined together with Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor John Venditto and Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Joseph Pinto with the Over The Hill Gang Men’s Softball League for their annual charity fundraiser check donation and presented a check to the Family of Jimmy Ossenfort, who is deceased.
During this yuletide season of giving, we in the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) especially acknowledge our leagues and clubs plus companies we work with that went beyond the proverbial extra mile to provide Hurricane Sandy relief. SportsSignup in Saratoga Springs made a $10,000 donation to the ENYYSA leagues most affected by Hurricane Sandy. The Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League (CJSL), Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) and Staten Island Youth Soccer League (SIYSL) each received $3,333. “We are a national company but New York State is our home and even members of our own families have been affected by Hurricane Sandy,” commented SportsSignup CEO Anthony Bruno. “We wanted to give to these organizations to help them get back on their feet.” The LIJSL held a food drive on November 10th and 11th at the Peter Collins Soccer Park in Plainview and the LIJSL office in Ronkonkoma. 4,134 lbs. of food, personal care items and home-cleaning supplies, as well as a van full of coats and blankets, were donated by Long Island soccer families. Hauppauge Soccer Club coach Joe Grippo organized a fundraiser on November 18 that raised $15,000 in donations and over 9,000 lbs. in non-perishable items for the American Red Cross and Island Harvest. “He put the event together in six days,” said Hauppauge Soccer Club President Pedro Contreras. “Although there were many others in our club who assisted, it was his tireless work that made

The popular program, which runs from Monday, January 14th to Thursday, February 21st, is offered at two locations, Broadway Mall in Hicksville and Westfield Sunrise Mall in Massapequa. The Hicksville Mall program will run on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., and the Massapequa Mall program runs Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Hicksville walkers will meet in front of the escalator near the Ikea entrance, and Massapequa walkers will meet inside on the main level in front of J.C. Penney. “The Town’s Co-Ed Walking Mall Program is the perfect way to start a new chapter of physical fitness in one’s life, resulting in a more fit and active lifestyle,” Councilwoman Faughnan said. “Mall walking is an excellent choice for
anyone who has been thinking about beginning a new exercise routine. It’s a positive step for general good health and gives residents an opportunity to make new friends in the process.” Councilwoman Faughnan also noted the importance for residents to check with their physicians before participating in any physical fitness program. Registration forms can be picked up at Town Hall North and South, Community Park facilities, and at local libraries. They can be returned to the Recreation Division at Town Hall South, Parks Department, 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa or handed in the first day of the program. For more information, please call the Town of Oyster Bay’s Recreation Department at 516.797.4125, extension 3.

commonalities. The program was funded through a $5,000 grant from MSG Varsity. Long Island Manager for MSG Varsity Jeanne Chillianis presented the check to guidance counselors and coordinators Jay Benjamin and Christine Kennedy in a special check presentation in December. The school was granted the scholarship based upon a recommendation by the district’s Dads’ Club. “It’s a great character education program that
brings students together and lets them see how much more alike they are than different,” Superintendent of Schools Terrence Clark said of the highly regarded program. “It really breaks down those barriers between kids. We have found over the years that students really appreciate the program, and it makes a long-lasting difference. Subsequently, we have found that students’ behavior improves in school when they come together as one.”

Residents can stay active this winter by signing up for the Town of Oyster Bay’s free Mall Walking Program. According to Town Councilwoman Elizabeth A. Faughnan, registration is underway for the twiceweekly program that gives anyone, regardless of age, the opportunity to exercise at area malls. “Many of us exercise regularly in the summer, but not as much when the weather starts getting colder,” Councilwoman Faughnan explained. “Walking is a wonderful form of exercise, something that can be implemented as a lifelong activity in an effort to stay active. The Town instituted this program to allow people to work out, regardless of the weather outside, and to learn some valuable tips on how to get the most benefits out of walking.”

Arthur Krantz’s We Care for Kids sponsored the 3rd Annual Angela’s House Holiday Party last weekend, December 1st and December 2nd, for the organization’s medically fragile children and their families. The two funfilled days took place at a hall donated by The Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 25 in Hauppauge. Each year the children, their parents and siblings, and the entire organization look forward to the Holiday Season and the magnificent party that they are able to attend, in hopes of spreading some of the Holiday Spirit. guests experienced the magical décor including tons of balloons and stuffed animals, toys, inflatables, lights, and more. “It’s like taking the kids to Disney for the day,” said organization founder, Bob Policastro, “it’s beyond belief.” The main sponsor of the event is Arthur Krantz and his organization, We Care For Kids, who also provided entertainment for the children, as Krantz was dressed as King Arthur. Many others people donated their time to making this party a success, as well, including medical staff from Stony Brooks Children’s Hospital who helped
supervise the children. “Our many heartfelt thanks to him [Arthur Krantz] and all the volunteers who selflessly devoted their time to brighten the Holidays for our children. And to all the wonderful staff at Angela's House, thank you for all you do all year for so many who need you,” said Mary Costanza Mingoia, parent of an Angela’s house child. Another parent, John Kristen commented, “Thank you for the amazing holiday party on Sunday! Ava especially loved the kickline dancing girls!”
CARE COMMITTEE - On Wednesday, December 19th, Nassau University Medical Center administrators, along with front line staff, gathered at the monthly patientcentered care meeting to celebrate the season filled with light music, songs, poetry, and holiday treats. Members of the various patient centered care teams along with the Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Walerstein capitalized on their creative talents by putting forth various patient and staff experiences at NuHealth over the last year.
Sharing The Joy
Families all over Long Island and NJ, like the Zaborowski’s (pictured) of Lindenhurst, an area hard hit by Sandy, gathered at their neighborhood Applebee’s on Saturday, December 8th for Breakfast with Santa to help raise monies for the USMC’s Toys for Tots drive.
While Santa heard the wishes of every good girl and boy, every penny raised from the breakfast event and from the sale of colorful paper “gift packages” strung around the restaurants was donated to Toys for Tots. In total, more than $250,000 has been raised so far to help brighten the
holidays of underprivileged children in our local communities and for families affected by Hurricane Sandy. In support of the program, paper “gift packages” will remain on sale at all Nassau or Suffolk Applebee’s through 12/31.
Grant Received
Mercy Medical Center has been awarded a $2,500 grant from the Rockville Centre Lions Club to support the hospital’s Outpatient Diabetes Education Center. The funds presented to the hospital by Rockville Centre Lions president Ed Asip are a portion of the proceeds of the group’s annual Dinner in the Dark gala, held last May at Middle Bay Country Club in Oceanside. “We are deeply grateful to the Lions Club for their support,” said Dr. Aaron E. Glatt, Mercy’s Executive
Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer. “Their donation will help to fund educational materials such as books and videos used in Mercy’s outpatient diabetes education classes. The RVC Lions Club has a strong commitment to fight diabetes and diabetic eye disease. As part of their mission, they support local and largescale efforts leading to the control and treatment of diabetes and its complications through education, prevention and research.
Mercy offers a monthly Diabetes SelfManagement Education Program conducted by instructors credentialed by the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators. They provide participants with the skills required for dayto-day management of diabetes to avoid the numerous adverse consequences if the condition is not controlled.
