Let me start off by saying, accidents happen. We all have our moments of distraction on the road. Add to that, heightened tension due to weather conditions (even if said conditions don’t happen to be a factor at the time, but we’re giving the benefit of the doubt here), and the forces of human nature, mixed with Mother Nature, sometimes create catastrophic results. Where am I going with this tangent, you ask? Just a preface to my recent run-in with a fellow motorist, is all. Well, his runin with me, to be exact. At a red light. Behind a line of about 12 other vehicles. Clearly stopped. Not moving. No ice, no slush, no nothing on the road. Getting the picture? So, obviously, you can imagine my astonishment upon glancing in my rearview mirror – as I habitually do when on the roads

– to see headlights approaching at what seemed too fast for an appropriate slowdown and stop maneuver. Sure enough, there it was, the impact, the sound of car metal crunching and cracking, along with the squeal of brakes. Lovely. Just lovely. Luckily, another one of my driving habits is to leave a bit of room between the front of my car and the one in front of mine, saving me the added inconvenience of continuing the potential chain reaction of collisions. One minor crisis averted. All of this, mind you, and the light had yet to change to green. No sooner did I get my bearings, than the driver – a young, college-aged male with a knit hat – appeared at my driver’s side window to apologize profusely and ask if I was alright. I rolled down my window, clearly angry, and said, “Yeah, I’m fine, but my car sure isn’t.” He continued to apologize and suggested we

pull out of the line of traffic and into the parking lot of an office building right alongside the road. Great idea. As I pulled off to the shoulder and continued into the agreedupon lot, the light changed. Wanting to be sure I was out of the entryway (and further harm’s way), I found a spot off to the side and waited. And waited. I watched the continuous stream of traffic drive by, with no sign of the guilty party. Gone. Took off. You must be kidding. Hence the tangent. And the anger. And the feeling that, in spite of the fact that “accidents happen” from time to time and none of us is perfect, there is no excuse for not owning up to your actions after the fact. That’s just bad karma. So, to the other driver, I hope you can live with your decision to run from your mistake. May you never have the misfortune for someone to do precisely the same thing to you.

Sun Upholstery

Sun Upholstery & Draperies, located at 30 Stewart Avenue in Huntington, is celebrating 90 years of serving the community. Owner Paul Grimes has been in the field for as long as he can remember, working with his father for many years. He loves the craft and the opportunity to be creative, but mostly, he enjoys seeing the clients’ satisfaction with the finished projects. Sun Upholstery provides all upholstery/ reupholstery and window treatments, including Hunter Douglas and Graber Window Fashions. “But the best part,” said Grimes, “of what we offer is personal, friendly experience.”

Est. 1925

They conduct all work on-premises, and the clients are able to benefit from this hands-on attention. As a result of such a personalized approach, Sun Upholstery & Draperies has been honored with numerous awards, and has been recognized by the Huntington Historical Society as the Town’s oldest shop. They have won Best Upholstery & Window Treatments for three years in a row, and were recently inducted into the 2014 Business Hall of Fame. As a means of giving back to the community, Sun Upholstery has donated its services to the Huntington Historical Society in helping with antique restorations. They have also donated floor cushions for the playroom at STEPS To End Family Violence, an agency in East Harlem that provides support for survivors of domestic violence. Sun Upholstery regularly offers holiday specials at the end of each year and, in April, holds an anniversary sale on all outdoor cushions and window treatments for summer. Stop down and see what they have to offer today!

Levittown’s Wisdom Lane Middle School Science Olympiad students prepared themselves for the March 7th regional Science Olympiad competition by holding a friendly scrimmage against their cross-town rival Salk Middle School so each team could test its skills prior to the regional competition. During the scrimmage, the students participated in activities that tested a bridge’s efficiency and

worked on acquiring the longest flight times for a bottle rocket and elastic launch glider. Other activities included building robots to perform various tasks and shooting catapult-like devices as close as possible to a target. All of these activities resemble categories in the regional competition against other Nassau County middle schools. Wisdom Lane Middle School Principal John

Avena explained that there were no winners or losers in this scrimmage. “The coaches were happy to see the students figuring out what they need to do to modify their projects prior to the regional competition,” he said. “We are confident that this scrimmage will bring both teams closer to bringing home medals for the Levittown School District.”

TERMS OF SALE Such tax liens shall be sold subject to any and all superior tax liens of sovereignties and other municipalities and to all claims of record which the County may have thereon and subject to the provisions of the Federal and State Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts. However, such tax liens shall have priority over the County’s Differential Interest Lien, representing the excess, if any, of the interest and penalty borne at the maximum rate over the interest and penalty borne at the rate at which the lien is purchased. The Purchaser acknowledges that the tax lien(s) sold pursuant to these Terms of Sale may be subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or may become subject to such proceedings which may be commenced during the period in which a tax lien is held by a successful bidder or the assignee of same, which may modify a Purchaser’s rights with respect to the lien(s) and the property securing same. Such bankruptcy proceedings shall not affect the validity of the tax lien. In addition to being subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or the Federal and State Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts, said purchaser’s right of foreclosure may be affected by the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery and Enforcement Act(FIRREA),12 U.S.C. ss 1811 et.seq., with regard to real property under Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation(FDIC) receivership. The County Treasurer reserves the right, without further notice and at any time, to withdraw from sale any of the parcels of land or premises herein listed. The Nassau County Treasurer reserves the right to intervene in any bankruptcy case/litigation where the property affected by the tax liens sold by the Treasurer is part of the bankruptcy estate. However,it is the sole responsibility of all tax lien purchasers to protect their legal interests in any bankruptcy case affecting their purchased tax lien, including but not limited to the filing of a proof of claim on their behalf, covering their investment in said tax lien. The Nassau County Treasurer and Nassau County and its agencies, assumes no responsibility for any legal representation of any tax lien purchaser in any legal proceeding including but not limited to a bankruptcy case where the purchased tax lien is at risk. The rate of interest and penalty at which any person purchases the tax lien shall be established by his bid. Each purchaser, immediately after the sale thereof, shall pay to the County Treasurer ten per cent of the amount for which the tax liens have been sold and the remaining ninety per cent within thirty days after such sale. If the purchaser at the tax sale shall fail to pay the remaining ninety per cent within ten days after he has been notified by the County Treasurer that the certificates of sale are ready for delivery, then all amounts deposited with the County Treasurer including but not limited to the ten per cent theretofore paid by him shall, without further notice or demand, be irrevocably forfeited by the purchaser and shall be retained by the County Treasurer as liquidated damages and the agreement to purchase shall be of no further effect. Time is of the essence in this sale. This sale is held pursuant to the Nassau County Administrative Code and interested parties are referred to such Code for additional information as to terms of the sale, rights of purchasers, maximum rates of interest and other legal incidents of the sale. This list includes only tax liens on real estate located in the Town of Hempstead. Valentine’s Day

Send Us Your Best Pics To Be Featured!

By: Alexandra H. Rodrigues, Massapequa At our very first Love, To think about anything else is tough. Chocolate hearts, roses and more than one kiss Ensures that Valentine’s Day is nothing but bliss. The next time this Love day comes around, Promises to spend life together are given abound. Everlasting love for each other, we swear To please each other, we take care. Life goes on with its sorrow and joy; Valentine’s Day special love again we deploy. There can be times when it is hard not to stray; To mend our commitment, we use this day. Love is an emotion that cannot be forced; Kindness is needed to have it endorsed. Valentine was the name for many a saint Who eagerly a picture of Love did paint. Those who nourished their love till their golden time Have truly received a present divine. No matter what stage you presently display, I wish you a Happy Valentine’s Day.

Winter Snows By: Milicent G.Tycko The flakes of snow Stream down, woefully obliging Gravity and fall over lost Reservoirs of love, forming shadowy Oases of snow dunes. When the waters of my sorrow meet This cold indifferent wall, There is no other way. My arctic tears are whipped to whitest snow That drifts and blows about the countryside. The winter snows remind me now Of poetry, of poems transformed From feelings, sorrows, losses. They sweep across and mass as one. The snowflakes and the sorrow, The shadows and the cold, The fresh and gleaming dune of white, As wondrous as a poem.

Recognizing the organization’s continued commitment to children in the local community, Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray and Councilman Gary Hudes presented a $5,000 grant to the LevittownIsland Trees Youth Council. “Now in its 60th year, the Levittown-Island Trees Youth Council has been a vital community resource for our township’s young people,” stated Murray. “We are proud to provide this grant to support their great sports programs.” The Levittown-Island Trees Youth Council serves approximately 10,000 children, ages 2-18 in the local community through

more than a dozen different sports leagues and clubs. “From baseball and softball, soccer and cheerleading, to basketball, swimming, ice hockey and football, the Levittown-Island Trees Youth Council has been a part of almost every child’s life in Levittown,” said Councilman Hudes. “This organization facilitates so many healthy activities for the youth in our community.” In addition to the sports leagues, the LevittownIsland Trees Youth Council also runs a popular summer recreation program in conjunction with the school district. The program serves as a

great way to keep children active and occupied during the summer break and provides employment for local teenagers. The Levittown-Island Trees Youth Council also has a philanthropic arm, collecting food for local pantries and assisting organizations such as Levittown Kiwanis and the Levittown Chamber of Commerce. “Having participated in Levittown-Island Trees Youth Council programs when I was growing up, I can personally attest to what an asset this organization is to our community,” concluded Supervisor Murray.

Open Your Heart & Home Make this Valentine’s Day extra special for your family and give them the gift of friendship with a Fresh Air child! Each summer, nearly 4,000 inner-city children visit suburban, rural and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada through The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family Program. This summer, join volunteer host families in Western Suffolk who open their hearts and homes to New York City children. “I have so many favorite memories that it’s hard to pick: helping our Fresh Air child catch a fish for the first time, or how excited

she was her first summer to see cows and horses, or finally being able to gaze up at the stars, because she said the glare of city lights doesn’t allow her to see them. It’s definitely the little things that mean the most,” says Meg, a Fresh Air host. Fresh Air children are boys and girls, from six to 18 years old, who live in New York City. Children on first-time visits are six to 12 years old and stay for one or two weeks. Children who are reinvited by host families may continue with The Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can enjoy extended trips. Families find hosting so rewarding that more than

65 percent of all Fresh Air children are invited to visit the same host families year after year. Through the eyes of Fresh Air children, families often rediscover the beauty of their own communities. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-income communities since 1877. For more information on hosting a Fresh Air child this summer, please contact Pamela Desmond at 631.786.1915 or visit The Fresh Air Fund online at www.freshair.org.

In an effort to help parents insure their children succeed in school, the Bellmore School District hosted its second parent workshop on January 28th. The “Study Skills Parent Workshop” was designed to help parents find more efficient ways to help their children with their work after school hours. In December, the district hosted a workshop on its enVision math program. Led by teachers

Christopher Merz, Lauren McHale and Graceann McClenahan, the program addressed study skills and strategies across all grade levels. Parents learned how study skills and work habits develop through the years and how they can support those habits; were taught age-appropriate strategies and skills to encourage the development and use of study skills in the home environment; and how best to help their child review classroom material to

prepare for tests. Parents were also encouraged to engage their children in conversations about each night’s homework topic to ensure they retained the information. “Keep in mind what you know about your child,” Dr. Joanne Dacek, assistant superintendent for instructional services, said. “You have to see what works in your own home.”

Sixth-grade students in Laura Koenig’s class at Wisdom Lane Middle School in the Levittown School District have raised approximately $3,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. During the annual St. Jude Math-A-Thon, participants sharpened their math skills while helping children with

serious illnesses. For 26 years, Wisdom Lane Middle School has raised approximately $120,000 by encouraging its students to participate in the math-athon in which participants are sponsored by friends and family to solve math problems in a “fun book.” Wisdom Lane Middle School’s participation in the math-a-thon helps to

provide the best possible medical care for patients, regardless of their ability to pay. In addition to the money raised, the students learned about the importance of helping others. Ms. Koenig is proud of all the students who participated in this annual event and is thankful for the support provided by the school staff.

Commitment To Community From February 9th through February 20th, two of New York City’s favorite casual restaurants, Café Metro and Fresh & Co., will donate a percentage of their sales to Friends of Karen, a tri-state organization that provides emotional, financial and advocacy support for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families living in the New York tri-state area. The organization has helped more than 13,500 children since its founding in 1978.

Café Metro (8 locations throughout New York City) and Fresh & Co. (11 locations) have been strong supporters of Friends of Karen for the past several years. The promotion – which offers customers 10% off their next order when they donate $1.00 – ultimately aims to share the mission of Friends of Karen with the customers who frequent both restaurants. Ty Sullivan, Director of Marketing for Café Metro and Fresh & Co., wants to share the continuous partnership

with the charity. “Our efforts and ability to connect our patrons’ awareness with Friends of Karen goes hand in hand with our commitment to community. We are pleased to be able to share the work of Friends of Karen with our customers so they can continue to benefit the many families who need the services of this important organization,” Sullivan said. For more information about Friends of Karen, call 631.473.1768 or visit friendsofkaren.org.
