Spring has sprung. That’s it. I’ve decided. One sunny day amid a week of snow and sleet and rain, and it’s official. Enough of this winter wonderland nonsense. Funny, since we have really only had one substantial snowstorm over the course of the last three or so winters; but the one was… well, quite a storm, shall we say. And just like that, all the relatively pleasant winters of the past few years have been forgotten – wiped out from the collective memory. Isn’t that always the way? One season gives way to the

next – and we, as a society, go from complaining about the cold, to whining about the spring rain, to being exhausted by the oppressive heat…and then, oh no, here comes that autumn chill again! One endless cycle of wishing for something other than what we have, only to promptly wish it away as soon as it’s within our grasp. We are a ﬂaky bunch, aren’t we? And to think other societies would give anything to live in a temperate climate such as ours, complete with four seasons – and the occasional natural disaster of course. Seriously, in the last year or

two, we’ve experienced two substantial hurricanes, a blizzard of epic proportions, a minor earthquake…am I forgetting anything else? Dare we ask – what next? Well, what’s next for me is spring. Beautiful, mild, clear and crisp. Spring. My favorite season, when the summer is still looming, everything is blooming and the days take on a renewed, vital energy that has been missing throughout the long winter of hibernation and doldrums. Sure, it may officially be a month or so away – but the mentality is here now. Embrace it.

Babylon Memorial Grade School students learned critical math skills while having fun playing sports and card games at the Family Math Carnival held on February 6th in the school’s gymnasium. The event, which was spearheaded by the Babylon Grade School Math Committee, fourthgrade teacher Kelly Arcoleo

and Principal Randee Bonagura, included several brain-building activities to help students improve their math abilities in an enjoyable atmosphere with friends, family members and classmates. Among the many games played was “Breakthrough,” a card game that utilizes dice to help students develop strategy based on

probability theory. The children also enjoyed sports-based games, such as counting the number of basketball dribbles they could tally in a 60-second span. Additionally, there was a “Guessing Jar,” a “Multiplication Baseball” activity and a “Whirl-Away Board.”

West Babylon Junior High School eighthgrader Thomas Iliou had a desire to assist students who required additional academic support. He began tutoring other students in his grade level and was affected by the experience. “When I saw the results of my efforts, I quickly realized the impact that I was having,” explained Thomas. “It made me want to expand the experience to more students.” Thomas founded the Peer Tutoring Club at the junior high school and developed the concept of creating a peer tutoring website for students to schedule sessions. Thomas shared his idea with Principal Scott Payne

and club adviser Malcolm Hirsch, who shared Thomas’ concept with Ryan Case, the district’s coordinator of student data and instructional technology. Mr. Case implemented the Google Apps for Education program within the district and researched apps to support Thomas’s suggestion. The district has since implemented

the YouCanBook.Me scheduling service for the students at the junior high school. Thomas currently manages the program himself and plans to expand the program to the high school when he attends in September. Concrete Concrete was invented by the Ancient Romans.
