Of Taboo Topics & Talking Points By: Jamie Lynn Ryan They say that two of the most taboo topics are religion and politics, subjects that should be avoided at all costs when in mixed company. Before I had my own legitimate opinions on such matters, I have to admit that I never understood what the big deal was. Now I get it. Especially in this day and age, with the advent of social media and the ability to post all sorts of potentially controversial tweets, status updates, photos, videos, etc.… is it any wonder that tensions tend to build to the point of heated disagreements? One day you’re “friends” – the next you’re engaged in a bitter dispute over political ideals. Some things should simply be left for private discourse.
Personally, I have always felt that, as long as your opinion is well informed and based on some sort of intelligent foundation, there should really be no need to defend it. Believe what you believe; just don’t try to impose it upon others. That’s what the politicians are for. Those basic philosophies which make us different are precisely what make our society unique – and interesting. No need to change that. When things take a nasty turn – which they inevitably seem to – whether in the form of written discourse or verbal sparring, that’s when it has gone too far. A little healthy debate is fine, and should be encouraged even. We should all be open to other viewpoints – perhaps, in our own narrow-minded tunnel vision, we may have missed some-
thing valid and eye opening. But merely shoving your unsolicited opinions down someone else’s throat is not only unnecessary, but borders on disrespectful. Voting booths are private for a reason, as are many religious institutions and practices. No one should feel obligated to defend his/her beliefs, so long as they are founded in some sort of informed, grounded philosophy. And if they aren’t, if they are merely based on a handful of regurgitated talking points or hearsay – well then, why would you want to recruit someone so ignorant to your side anyway? Better they are left to their own devices. Simply my opinion. Take it or leave it. {This message was approved by Jamie Lynn Ryan.}

program. Those who are unable to remain abstinent during the twelve weeks of sessions are counseled and referred for more intensive treatment. With a well-publicized opiate crisis gripping Long Island and a documented upswing in impaired driving and boating, LICADD Executive Director Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds says support for Start2Stop comes at the perfect time. “I am grateful to Assemblyman Sweeney for helping us make this program more accessible to local residents before their use of drugs and alcohol accelerates,” he said. “This proactive approach and timely intervention will help make Suffolk County a safer and healthier place.” “Long Island continues to experience a number of well-publicized tragedies due to substance abuse.

The Start2Stop program helps participants get control of their substance abuse problem before it escalates into a tragedy. While we need strong laws to deal with the results of DWI and BWI incidents, it is far better to prevent those tragedies from happening in the first place. That’s what this grant is intended to do,” said Assemblyman Sweeney. For more information about Start2Stop, or any of LICADD’s other services, please call 631.979.1700 or visit www.licadd.org.

Cancer Survivors’ Day
Eisenhower Park was filled with the laughter of more than 700 pediatric cancer survivors and family members who gathered for the inaugural Les Nelkin Pediatric Cancer Survivors’ Day
hosted by Cohen Children’s Medical Center (CCMC) of New York. They cheered as the event’s keynote speaker, New York Giants’ linebacker Mark Herzlich talked about his own successful battle with

Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. When he was diagnosed at age 21 before starting his senior year at Boston College, Mr. Herzlich was told that he would not be able to play football again - and may never run again. “I decided that I wasn’t going to let cancer beat me,” Mr. Herzlich told fellow survivors. with the hospital staff and her team of doctors. “I felt I was saved for a reason and am thankful to give back to Cohen through my foundation, Friends and Angels: The Tracy Vicere Foundation,” she said. The foundation hosts fundraisers to benefit the Division of Hematology/Oncology and Stem Cell Transplantation at CCMC. As a leading center of pediatric oncology, CCMC sees approximately 200 new cases of childhood cancer every year. Thanks to improvements in chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery, there are more than 300,000 children, teens and young adults in the United States who are survivors of childhood cancer and require ongoing care. To help meet the complex needs of
survivors, CCMC pediatric oncologist hematologist Jonathan Fish, MD, created the Survivors Facing Forward Program (SURFF). “Though we cannot choose our challenges,” Dr. Fish said, “Survivors Facing Forward will help survivors face the unique concerns ahead, and will advocate for your wellbeing and serve as a resource.” Survivors also know the importance of a positive attitude, a fact evident in the smiles of the hundreds present. pushed him to not just be a survivor, but to “be a thriver.” A three-year cancer survivor who won a Super Bowl ring with the Giants in February during his rookie season, he encouraged attendees to “fulfill your dreams.” The event, made possible by the support of Ruth and Harold Nelkin as a way to honor the memory of their son, Les, attracted former child cancer patients of all ages. They included Tracy Vicere, who is celebrating 22 years of survivorship after being diagnosed at age 16 with two different types of cancer, Hodgkin’s Disease and NonHodgkin’s Lymphoma. The 5th Annual Long Island Run For The Warriors® will be held on Saturday, October 20th. Each year, this race is completed by nearly 2,000 runners and walkers from Long Island, all who honor and support the sacrifices of our nation’s heroes. This year, participants will be joined by two ReWalkers who will utilize new cutting edge technology to complete the 1-mile Walk event. The ReWalkers are participants of the Spinal Cord Damage Research Center at the James J Peters VA Medical Center in Bronx, NY. The ReWalk is a robot-assisted exoskeleton. Use of the ReWalk permits a person with motor-complete paraplegia to stand, walk over ground and to ascend/descend stairs. The system weighs 45 pounds and includes a footplate, strapping mechanisms for the legs, hips and trunk, robotic exoskeletons on each lateral leg, a backpack which stores the batteries and computer and a remote control system on a wrist band. The ReWalk participant uses arm crutches to maintain balance during standing and walking.
The two ReWalkers will participate in the 1-mile Walk and this will be the first time each participates in this type of an event utilizing the exoskeletonassisted walking device. One of the participants is Theresa Hannigan, a former Army Sergeant who served during the Vietnam era and was left paralyzed two years ago as a result of a progressive autoimmune disease which she contracted while in the Army. Hannigan has been training with the ReWalk at the National Center of Excellence for the Medical Consequences of Spinal Cord Injury at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center, Bronx, NY. She plans to use the exoskeleton walk the 1-mile road race to raise money for the organization Hope For The Warriors®. “Come out and cheer me on and raise hope for my fellow Warriors as I reWalk this mile. Please help the cause by donating in my name,” said Hannigan. To donate to this cause, v i s i t www.hopeforthewarriors. org/longislandrun and choose “Sponsor Participant.”
They will be joined by wounded service members and veterans, families of the fallen, local government officials, and thousands from within the community. The event will begin with a ceremony, honoring the sacrifices of wounded service members and the fallen. The race will be held at the Town Hall of Babylon in Lindenhurst. Participants may choose to run or walk in the 10K, 5K or the 1-mile Walk/Run. All funds raised with benefit Hope For The Warriors® a national nonprofit organizations that assists combat wounded service members, their families and families of the fallen. Registration is $25 per person with special pricing for veterans and students. Active duty military, spouses and children of active duty military, and Gold Star Families are free. means of honoring wounded service members and families of the fallen,” Jack Caffey, Jr., Long Island Run For The Warriors® Race Director said. “This year with both wounded service members and the ReWalkers participating, the race will also be a celebration of reaching new physical goals and overcoming challenges.” Morning Schedule: 9 a.m. - Opening Ceremony 9:30 a.m. - 5K start 9:45 a.m. - 10K start 10 a.m. - 1-Mile Walk/Run start 11:30 a.m. - Closing Ceremony and Awards All proceeds will benefit Hope For The Warriors®, a national nonprofit organization that assists combat wounded service members, their families, and families of the fallen. Concussion of the brain is the very common injury that occurs under different circumstances. It can occur during the simple slip and fall accident, motor vehicle accident, but most commonly it does in sport. Over the last ten years a lot of research was done with an intention to explain why there is much higher incidence of neurological disorders affecting professional sport players. This study eventually revealed that a mild head injury causes pathological processes that eventually may lead to neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Lou Gehrig’s, etc. During the mild head injury or mild concussion of the brain, the symptoms of the actual injury could be transient and brief, and eventually this condition becomes virtually asymptomatic or having very subtle symptoms. Those symptoms could be just a mild headache, excessive fatigue, excessive or lack of sleep, problem with concentration. Since many symptoms of concussion are brief and may not be present on the second or third day after the concussion, it will leave very little tools to help a doctor to determine if the player is ready to go back to play. Current thinking is that optimal recovery of concussed students occurs when there is cognitive, physical, and emotional rest following injury. Additionally, research has shown that 92% of second injuries occur in the first week following the initial injury, and the goal is to allow adequate recovery time before allowing a student to risk re-injury. Pressure to return an athlete before it is safe can be intense from parents and athletes. Primary care physicians are being asked to assist in the process of keeping injured children safe by remaining objective and withholding participation until it is deemed safe with a reasonable degree of medical certainty.
return to school), but we anticipate a similar slow exertional challenge as we see in RTP. The graduated steps begin after the student has a medical clearance to return to academics, and is symptom free off pain killing medicines for a full 24 hours. RTL should be an individualized steady progression with the parent’s checking the child daily for a return of symptoms and alerting you if the student is struggling so you can provide appropriate requests for medical accommodations to the school as needed. Unlike a RTP, the RTL might start at any level and progress at a rate individualized to the student’s needs and tolerance. Steps might be skipped as tolerated and might look something like this: Students with reasonable recovery times typically will get accommodations within the school by the principal. Students with protracted recovery beyond about 10 weeks, a school quarter, are likely eligible for a 504 plan or an IEP, and you might be asked to write a request to support the family at that time.

The Concussion Act of NYS
The Concussion Act of NYS took effect July 1, 2012, and requires schools to: • Educate parents, athletes, coaches, athletic trainers, physical education teachers, and school nurses on concussion, • Remove observed or suspected concussed students from play based on signs and symptoms, • Withhold further participation until evaluated by, and received written and signed authorization to return to activities from a licensed physician. • Obtain physician clearance, and when the athlete has been symptom-free off pain killing medicines for a minimum of 24 hours and allow them to begin a monitored progressive six phase return to play. The RTP protocol may not start until an athlete is completely symptom-free for a full 24 hours off pain killing medicines, and must remain symptom-free for 24 hours following each stage before progressing further. In addition, the Hispanic/Latino population continues to grow, increasing the need for access to programs for English language learners. Suffolk County also reports an increase in the child abuse and maltreatment reports in Suffolk County; perhaps a reflection of economic stress on families and the need for support services. A complete report of the annual community assessment can be found on the program’s website: www.childrenscommunity hs.org.
The Children’s Community Head Start and Early Head Starts (CCHS), with centers in Port Jefferson and Ronkonkoma, provides services for families residing in 13 school districts in Central Suffolk County. Families are eligible based on household incomes that are below the federal poverty line. Homeless and foster children, and children with disabilities, are also eligible. According to the 2009 Long Island Index research report prepared by the Rauch Foundation, early childhood education “prepares children for school, and when provided in a high quality program, it can reduce grade repetition, drop out rates and juvenile delinquency.” The report further explains that high quality programs can lower future costs that the public school would otherwise assume.

(NAPSI)—You may be able to find a great used car online—if you heed a few hints: • You can search millions of used cars for sale online if you go to sites like Autotrader.com and Cars.com. • To narrow your search, consider and compare price, photos of the cars and their descriptions. • Consider the seller. Is the person or company reputable? Is it a dealer or a private seller? If it’s the latter, has this person been recommended to you by someone you know and trust? • Before you buy any used car, it’s a good idea to check the vehicle’s history with a Carfax Vehicle History Report. These can help you make better decisions about used cars. Visit www.carfax.com to get a report and learn more.

Long Island Heart Walk They walked for Long Island friends and neighbors, they walked for family members and loved ones, they walked in honor and in memory of the close to 9,600 people on Long Island that die each year from cardiovascular diseases and stroke – Long Island’s No. 1 and No. 4 causes of death. They walked to start a healthier journey and a healthier life. Led by John Buran, President & CEO of Flushing Bank, American Heart Association Long Island Heart Walk Red Cap Ambassador, 13 year-old, Cecilia Funk and her family, and WCBS-TV correspondent Jennifer McLogan and thousands of walkers on a beautiful warm and sunny day, stepped out on Sunday, September 23rd, at Jones Beach to help save Long Island lives from heart disease and stroke. “It has been a pleasure and an honor to lead this campaign as Chairman and I appreciate each and every one that supported our efforts to make a difference and save lives.” said John Buran. The Long Island Heart Walk was an opportunity for people to improve
their health by walking, while simultaneously raising funds to help fight heart disease and stroke. The American Heart Association’s My Heart. My Life.™ movement will change how Americans live their lives. My Heart. My Life. is about making health a priority – as individuals and as families – by starting with small changes and building toward an ideal health goal. With a focus on personal and incremental change, My Heart. My Life. offers hands-on experiences and practical solutions to help people get physically active, eat healthy and pass healthy habits on to future generations. By making small changes to take care of their hearts, Americans engaged in the My Heart. My Life. movement put themselves on a path to a longer, better life. The days’ event also included a morning health fair, kid’s zone, blood pressure screenings, entertainment by the Adelphi University college cheerleaders and dance team and The Long Island Conservatory and music by The S.I.E. band, Nico Padden and Rob Baione. The Long Island Heart
Walk is presented nationally by Subway and Jenny Craig, presenting sponsor Flushing Bank, and Long Island businesses such as Astoria Savings Bank, Allstate, Geico, WinthropUniversity Hospital, Deloitte, Forest Labs, Hon. Thomas Gulotta, J.H. Cohn LLP, MSC Industrial Supply Co., St. Joseph’s College and Stony Brook University Medical Center. Media Sponsors of the event were WBAB-FM 102.3, WBLI-FM 106.1 and Long Island Pulse Magazine. Thirty-nine percent of Americans think they are in ideal health, but fewer than 1 percent actually meet the American Heart Association’s criteria. The association is teaching people what it really means to be healthy, offering practical solutions to improve their lives and the lives of their families. To learn more about the My Heart. My Life. movement, and how your company can become Fit Friendly Company, call the American Heart Association office at 516.450.9126 or visit www.longislandheartwalk. org.

For the fifth consecutive year, Brighton Collectibles will be raising money for Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center’s breast health services. Brighton will contribute $10 for each $50 “Power of Pink” bracelet sold at the Smith Haven Mall, Lake Grove store between September 28th and October 31st. The 2012 limitededition bracelet is a classic
design resembling one of the bracelets in the Brighton line that women have loved collecting. The design is like two bracelets in one, it can be worn with pink-accented links or reversed to wear as an allsilver bracelet. Its dangling heart charm and pink ribbon with touches of light rose Swarovski crystals show support for everyone who has been
touched by breast cancer. “This bracelet symbolizes hope and raises awareness, each one of us can make a difference when we act together in support of women fighting breast cancer”, said Good Samaritan Hospital’s Breast Health Center Coordinator Bonnie Edsall, RN.

The Common Core Math program by Pearson. This program is aligned with the Common Core Standards. District staff will be exploring the new curricula and the Common Core further during professional development sessions scheduled throughout the fall and during the superintendent’s conference days in November and January. A main focus of the Common Core implementation is the alignment of assessments with the Common Core. This year, the ELA and math assessments in grades 3-8, as well as the NYSESLAT, have been aligned to the new state standards. “The SED has presented every educator in the state with an abundance of changes,” explained Christine Tona, the district’s executive director for curriculum and instruction. “We all must do everything we can to educate ourselves so that we can guide our students toward success.”

Walk To School Day
Students from Babylon Elementary School walked to school on October 3rd as part of International Walk To School Day, an initiative created to improve neighborhood connections, promote physical activity and create a cleaner environment. According to WalkBikeToSchool.org, International Walk to School Day began in the United States in 1997 as a one-day event aimed at building awareness for the need for walkable communities. The event became international in 2000 when England and Canada joined the effort.
Communities and schools are using the day as a first step in changing community culture, and to create options for getting to school that are more inviting for families. Not only does walking bring a sense of joy and independence, it’s also a chance for students and their parents to get the physical activity they need. Walking to school can also create a cleaner environment by reducing traffic congestion and airpolluting car emissions, while also boosting a sense of community. The Babylon School District is committed to helping promote a cleaner

New York State teachers plan lessons based upon a series of state learning standards that clearly and consistently explore what students are expected to learn at every grade level. In January 2011, the Board of Regents approved additions to these standards, creating a new set of New York State Common Core Learning Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy, as well as for Mathematics and PreKindergarten. As such, it was expected that all schools would have their curricula aligned to the Common Core by the start of the 2012-2013 school year. The West Babylon

During the summer months, the State Education Department (SED) began the process of rolling out curriculum modules, each containing a collection of units that provide guidelines for grades K-5. Additional modules for the upper grades will be published by the SED shortly. The district plans to use and build upon the models provided throughout the year. Despite the fact that the state has not yet provided a comprehensive K-12 guide, the district’s Professional Development Plan Committee has been meeting with consistency to finalize a plan for implementation that will support the learning needs of students in every grade. Babylon High School Principal Al Cirone announced on October 3rd that Babylon seniors Delaney Cassidy, Kelly Corcoran and Christopher Fenton have been named Commended Students in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program. To earn the Commended distinction, students had to place among the top five percent of the 1.5 million who entered the
competition. Students entered the program by taking the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, and a select group of approximately 34,000 across the nation were officially “commended.” A letter of commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation was presented by Mr. Cirone, Superintendent
Richard Rozakis and Babylon High School guidance counselor Suzanne Murphy to the three talented Babylon seniors who qualified. “We are all so proud of our Commended Students,” Ms. Murphy said. “It is a great honor, and we look forward to hearing what colleges they plan to attend in the fall.” Photo courtesy of: Eric Holden, Syntax
