satisfying ending,” said Mr. Erickson. While the children Mr. Erickson teaches on a daily basis aren’t his target audience, he is still able to use his experience as a published author in his lessons. “In my library classes, I work with my students on creating their own stories. We will coauthor creative writing pieces, where I’ll begin a story and the students will use their imaginations to complete the piece,” he explained. “I like to try and make library fun and interactive for the kids. I want them to understand the correlation between reading and writing.” “International Harvester” is available for purchase online, in bookstores and as an ebook.

Full disclosure: I am a Yankee fan. Always have been, always will be. That said, I fully respect those who are not. However, as with politics, when a rivalry takes a turn toward bitter hatred, I lose that respect. Let’s be reminded that, contrary to larger, more world-defining issues, baseball is a game – a highly profitable one, yes; but still, just a game. I laugh when I hear those who use the Yankees’ exorbitant payroll as a valid reason for despising each and every player on the team. Need it be pointed out that just about every team in the MLB employs numerous multi-millionaires on its roster? Is the difference between $5 million for one player versus $20 million for another really that different in the larger scope of things? These are grown men playing a game for a living.

the outcome of the games. It’s the system as a whole that is unbalanced. And, if we’re being totally candid, I’m willing to bet that there are few among us who would turn down such a lucrative opportunity if it meant a lifetime of financial security. So perhaps we shouldn’t be so quick to judge. I enjoy my entertainment as much as the next person. And yes, when my team puts on such a pathetic showing as they did this past postseason, I am filled with just as much frustration as the next person. But then common sense creeps in… just because someone signed a $20 million check for a player, does not guarantee that they will succeed each and every day. We are all only human, despite how inhuman such sums of money sometimes seem. Let’s all save the hatred for an issue that truly matters.

Let’s face it – they are all grossly overpaid. The same can be said for most rock stars, members of Hollywood’s elite, just about all professional athletes – and even some members of a few more universally respected professions. You know, like lawyers and accountants and Wall Street executives… So yes, I understand the criticism directed at certain members of the baseball world whom fans feel have not pulled their weight, who may not have truly “earned their paycheck” this past season. I wholeheartedly agree. But seriously, do you mean to tell me that if a member of your favorite team went on to win the World Series, this extravagance would somehow be deemed more acceptable? I don’t know what it takes to “earn” $20 million, but I’m pretty sure playing baseball doesn’t qualify regardless of

Concussion of the brain is the very common injury that occurs under different circumstances. It can occur during the simple slip and fall accident, motor vehicle accident, but most commonly it does in sport. Over the last ten years a lot of research was done with an intention to explain why there is much higher incidence of neurological disorders affecting professional sport players. This study eventually revealed that a mild head injury causes pathological processes that eventually may lead to neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Lou Gehrig’s, etc. During the mild head injury or mild concussion of the brain, the symptoms of the actual injury could be transient and brief, and eventually this condition becomes virtually asymptomatic or having very subtle symptoms. Those symptoms could be just a mild headache, excessive fatigue, excessive or lack of sleep, problem with concentration. Since many symptoms of concussion are brief and may not be present on the second or third day after the concussion, it will leave very little tools to help a doctor to determine if the player is ready to go back to play. Current thinking is that optimal recovery of concussed students occurs when there is cognitive, physical, and emotional rest following injury. Additionally, research has shown that 92% of second injuries occur in the first week following the initial injury, and the goal is to allow adequate recovery time before allowing a student to risk re-injury. Pressure to return an athlete before it is safe can be intense from parents and athletes. Primary care physicians are being asked to assist in the process of keeping injured children safe by remaining objective and withholding participation until it is deemed safe with a reasonable degree of medical certainty.

return to school), but we anticipate a similar slow exertional challenge as we see in RTP. The graduated steps begin after the student has a medical clearance to return to academics, and is symptom free off pain killing medicines for a full 24 hours. RTL should be an individualized steady progression with the parent’s checking the child daily for a return of symptoms and alerting you if the student is struggling so you can provide appropriate requests for medical accommodations to the school as needed. Unlike a RTP, the RTL might start at any level and progress at a rate individualized to the student’s needs and tolerance. Steps might be skipped as tolerated and might look something like this: Students with reasonable recovery times typically will get accommodations within the school by the principal. Students with protracted recovery beyond about 10 weeks, a school quarter, are likely eligible for a 504 plan or an IEP, and you might be asked to write a request to support the family at that time.

The Concussion Act of NYS

The Concussion Act of NYS took effect July 1, 2012, and requires schools to: • Educate parents, athletes, coaches, athletic trainers, physical education teachers, and school nurses on concussion, • Remove observed or suspected concussed students from play based on signs and symptoms, • Withhold further participation until evaluated by, and received written and signed authorization to return to activities from a licensed physician. • Obtain physician clearance, and when the athlete has been symptom-free off pain killing medicines for a minimum of 24 hours and allow them to begin a monitored progressive six phase return to play. MAKING A CLINICAL DETERMINATION • Symptoms: somatic (e.g. headache, nausea, dizziness), cognitive (e.g. feeling in a fog), and/or emotional (e.g. liability)

• Behavioral changes: irritability, personality changes • Cognitive impairment: Hard time concentrating, trouble remembering, not feeling themselves, being confused, thinking speed slowed down, taking a longer time to react • Sleep disturbance: drowsiness, insomnia GRADUATED RETURN TO PHYSICAL EXERTION AND ACTIVITY OR RETURN TO PLAY (RTP) This is a six step gradual return to activity. The RTP protocol may not start until an athlete is completely symptom-free for a full 24 hours off pain killing medicines, and must remain symptom-free for 24 hours following each stage before progressing further. RECOVERY Average recovery following concussion is about a week to ten days; protracted recovery with post concussion syndrome is after 21 days. Young teenage girls often have protracted recovery more than any other group. RETURN TO LEARN (RTL) More information will be forthcoming about RTL (cognitive

(NAPSA)-Taking good care of your periodontal health involves daily toothbrushing and flossing, plus a yearly periodontal evaluation. A dental professional, such as a periodontist-a specialist in the treatment and prevention of gum disease -can conduct the exam. To learn more, visit www.perio.org.

Dr. Richard Orlandi and his staff at LaserToenailCenter.com offer in-office treatment of toenail fungus with a new revolutionary laser that kills toenail fungus. “The Pinpointe Laser is a major breakthrough in the treatment of toenail fungus. It is the newest and most effective FDA-approved treatment for toenail fungus now available to the public,” Dr. Orlandi explained. The Pinpointe Laser has appeared on Good Morning America, Fox News NY, ABC News and The Doctors TV show, All of these videos can be seen on their website, LaserToenailCenter.com. The general public is just becoming aware of this highly effective laser treatment that kills fungus underneath the toenail without pain. “The gentle laser light shines through the toenail, and the infrared light directly kills the fungal organisms. FDA studies started in 2007 reveal that

over 80% of the treated patients grew out normal looking toenails after just one treatment. Patients are extremely happy having this new treatment choice.” Dr. Orlandi continues saying, “The painless treatment requires no anesthesia, usually takes 20 to 30 minutes for all ten toes, has no side effects and uses no harmful UV radiation. Since there is no pain, you can walk out just like you walked in, with no restrictions. Toenail polish and shoes can be worn immediately after treatment. Excellent results are commonly seen following treatment of this condition. Healthy, clear toenails are a general indicator of good health, and there is no need to be embarrassed by unsightly fungal toenails.” For further information, contact Office Manager Arrianne at 631.669.4955.

teachers and leaders in public and charter schools. During the period of November 1st, 2012 to June 30th, 2014, West Babylon Schools are slated to receive $544,250 in grant money to strengthen educator effectiveness and subsequently, student success. The grant money awarded to the district will fund additional training, professional development and materials such as texts and iPads for teacher facilitators and administrators in support of the new Common Core Learning Standards in literacy and math, as well as the implementation of APPR evaluations. Additionally, teachers will be trained to become Building Effectiveness Team members and

facilitate professional development for colleagues so that professional growth will expand without additional cost to the district. Teacher facilitators will also receive coaching during two days of summer training funded with grant money. “It is a remarkable honor to have been selected as the only district in Suffolk County to receive grant money,” remarked Superintendent of Schools Anthony Cacciola. “Our students deserve teachers and administrators who will strengthen their learning experiences and support their educational needs. This money will allow us to better support our staff to ensure that those needs are being met as effectively as possible.”

Drugs, which targets children in kindergarten through 12th grade, builds students’ resiliency by teaching them how to be socially competent and autonomous problem solvers. For young people displaying signs of alcohol and drug abuse, Teen Intervene offers a monthlong combination of individual and parentpresent counseling sessions focused on charting a different direction that includes abstinence and healthier coping strategies. LICADD Board Chair and Event Co-Chair Jeffery Capazzi commented on the outstanding turnout: “It is extremely encouraging to see this kind of recognition for the staggering need that exists currently on Long Island. Our participants’ commitment to solving this problem ensures these crucial programs are available to our young people who are most at risk.”

Invitational Golf Tournament, which was held in September in Nassau County. LICADD Board Director and resident of East Hampton and Locust Valley, Alfred E. Devendorf was pleased by the support of the local community, he remarked “LICADD has been graciously welcomed on the South Fork and the response to this event has been overwhelming. East End business owners and local residents, including Southampton Mayor Mark Epley, have been extremely generous in their support of our programs.” “The demand for our services from young people and their families continues to soar,” explained LICADD Executive Director Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds, “and schools are hungry for proven prevention programs that go beyond scare tactics and give kids the tools necessary to resist peer pressure, enhance family communication and ultimately stay safer. Funds raised at the Tee-Off for Our Teens tournament will help us reach more kids and assist more families across Long Island, with a renewed emphasis on the East End.” LICADD delivers evidence-based prevention programs aimed at bolstering children and young adults’ self-esteem, confidence and communication with peers and parents, before they are presented with the choice to use alcohol and drugs. Stony Brook Medicine has entered the 2nd Annual National Pink Glove video competition, sponsored by MedLine Industries Inc., with a four-minute video capturing the spirit of Stony Brook physicians and staff, as well as the broader Stony Brook community, in their dedication to fighting

breast cancer. On Friday, October 12th, voting opened nationwide to determine which videos will receive the most votes, with prize money donated for breast cancer research. “We danced the dance, and now it’s time to rock the vote,” said Linda Bily, Cancer Patient Advocacy & Community Outreach

Coordinator for the Stony Brook University Cancer Center, who coordinated production of Stony Brook’s video. “We need the support not only of the campus, but from the broader community we serve, since our goal is 75,000 votes in just two weeks’ time.” Last year, Medline sponsored its first online competition nationwide to find the best Pink Glove Dance video. The competition featured 139 videos from hospitals, nursing homes, schools and other organizations throughout the U.S. and Canada. The contest quickly became a national social media phenomenon, with the videos receiving more than 1.2 million views, a half a million votes and thousands of tweets, blogs and texts. Lexington Medical Center in West Columbia, S.C., won last year’s competition with 61,054 votes. Now the race is on to see which video will garner the most votes in 2012, with a top prize of $10,000 to be donated for breast cancer research to the winner’s selected charity of choice. Second prize is $5,000 and third prize is $2,000. Voting ends at midnight on Friday, October 26th, and the winners will be announced on November 2nd. Voting will be conducted using a contest application integrated with Facebook. Users must have a Facebook

account and be logged into their account to vote. Users may access the contest application either on Facebook, via a link on www.Facebook.com/medli nebreastcancerawareness or from the contest page that will be displayed on Pinkglovedance.com. Entries are displayed alphabetically so voters can easily locate the entry they wish to vote for. Stony Brook’s video is set to the tune of “You Won’t Dance Alone,” by the Best Day Ever, which was the song used in the second year of the Pink Glove Dance competition. It features campy performances by such leaders as Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, Senior Vice President, Health Sciences, and Dean, Stony

Brook University School of Medicine, and Yusuf Hannun, MD, Director of the Cancer Center, Vice Dean, Cancer Medicine and the Joel Kenny Professor of Medicine as well as many Stony Brook University sports teams and clubs, and community supporters. “This is all in good fun, but for serious business: defeating breast cancer,” said Dr. Hannun. “This video project is symbolic of all that we can accomplish when we join together to achieve one unifying goal. It symbolizes the enormous teamwork at Stony Brook Medicine in dedicating our research efforts toward finding a cure for this disease.” Dr. Hannun in

particular recognized Linda Bily for her role in coordinating the video, along with Lynn Spinnato of Spinnato Gallery, who served as director; and Lauren Kaushansky, Instructor in the Professional Education Program, Department of History, at Stony Brook University, who served as creative consultant on the project. The Pink Glove Dance video phenomenon began three years ago, when Medline produced the original Pink Glove Dance video to raise breast cancer awareness. The first video generated more than 13 million views on YouTube and inspired countless videos and events around the world.

Cooking Competition

On October 13th, three staff members of the West Babylon School District went head-to-head in a cooking competition during the Food Network New York City Wine & Food Festival, presented by Food & Wine magazine. The competition was part of the festival’s feature family program, “Fun and Fit in the City,” presented by Target and hosted by celebrity chef Guy Fieri. The West Babylon team comprised of Santapogue Elementary School cook Laura Cassano, assistant cook Josephine Fiorante and the district’s music and

art chairperson for grades K-8, Bill Duran competed against New Rochelle City School District under the guidance of celebrity chef and co-host of the Rachael vs. Guy Celebrity CookOff, Rachael Ray. The culinary team from New Rochelle worked under the tutelage of Fieri. Contestants were supplied with a food basket containing unknown ingredients. They were required to use the contents of their baskets to create a meal that was not only delicious but also healthy and reflective of the regulations identified in

the Healthy Hunger Free Act of 2010. A panel of judges announced West Babylon’s spicy taco chili on a bed of sweet potato with cheddar the winner of the lunch competition. In the past, the West Babylon School District has been recognized with medals from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation for their efforts to improve the health of their students and community in a variety of ways. The district’s involvement and ultimate success in this competition reinforce their mission to encourage healthy living.

Memorial Soccer Game

The Babylon Panthers girls and boys soccer teams both took the field at Babylon High School on October 12th for the 11th Annual Soccer Under The Lights event honoring the life and memory of Randy Zwerlein, a beloved Babylon community member who tragically passed away in 2002. Zwerlein, a father of two graduates of the Babylon School District, was known by friends, family and the Babylon community as a dedicated

volunteer who spent countless hours lending a hand to the Babylon Soccer Club, Babylon Lions Club and many other local organizations. He was also married to Babylon Memorial Grade School fifth-grade teacher Rayna Zwerlein, who has been co-organizing “Soccer Under the Lights” each year since 2002. According to Mrs. Zwerlein, Randy was passionate about youth sports and volunteering, and “Soccer Under the

Lights” puts athletics in the spotlight of the Babylon community while also honoring the spirit of volunteerism. Proceeds from the event, hosted by the Randy Zwerlein “Under the Lights” Committee in association with the Babylon Booster Club, help support scholarships given in Randy Zwerlein’s memory as well as raise funding for future night games. Celebrating With A Key Win

The Babylon Panthers (6-0) celebrated homecoming on October 13th with a convincing 37-8 victory over the previously unbeaten Hampton Bays Baymen. Babylon, which extended its midseason win streak to six games, gained sole possession of first place in the stacked Suffolk IV conference with a dominating performance that moved the team a half-game ahead of Shoreham-Wading River. The Panthers opened a 308 lead by halftime on an 87-yard kickoff touchdown return by Eric Schweitzer and two rushing touchdowns from Luke Zappia. Schweitzer, who rushed 12 times for 94 yards, tacked on a 5yard rushing touchdown in the third stanza to cap

the scoring for Babylon. Prior to the game, hundreds of spectators lined the sidewalks of Deer Park Avenue for the annual homecoming parade. This year, the parade featured the Babylon High School marching band, the cast of the high school production of “Bye, Bye Birdie,” Babylon JV and varsity cheerleaders, the Babylon High School kickline, the Memorial Grade School marching band, Babylon High School’s drama club, over a dozen youth league football players and members of the high school homecoming court. Each class from Babylon High School created unique floats to ride on during the parade, which

they designed around this year’s theme of “The Four Elements.” The senior class took home the award for best float with a dazzling creation that featured a wave, a surfboard and sand. In other matters, Patrick Drennan and Caroline Figoski were named homecoming king and queen. This year’s homecoming festivities also included a Chili and Chowder Cookoff to determine which of the 10 participating local restaurants had the best chili and chowder in Babylon Village. Guest judges included Superintendent of Schools Richard Rozakis, Babylon High School Principal Al Cirone and Babylon Village Mayor Ralph Scordino.

All-County Honors Babylon high school students Genny Gravina, Carolanne Murphy and Miranda Richards were selected to have their artwork displayed at the New York State School Boards Association conference, which will take place later this year in Rochester, N.Y. The NYSSBA conference will have an exhibit featuring some of the best student-created artwork from across the state. A reception will be held for the student artists and they will receive a certificate for their

participation. The Babylon School District will also receive a seal of distinction for the students’ artwork that was chosen for the exhibit. “We are so excited to have had three students’ artwork selected to be displayed at the NYSSBA conference,” said Babylon Director of Fine Arts Angela Turk. “The district is extremely proud of these students’ accomplishments. It is a highly coveted honor that recognizes some of the best artists in New York State.”

Babylon’s fine arts and music department is also pleased to announce that Babylon High School students Samantha Gerdes, Kathryn Oman and Matthew Taggart were chosen to participate in the 2012 New York State Council of Administrators of Music Education/Suffolk County Music Educators Association’s High School All-County Music Festival, which will be held on November 16th at Northport High School.

Babylon high school students Samantha Gerdes, Kathryn Oman and Matthew Taggart were chosen to participate in the 2012 New York State Council of Administrators of Music Education/Suffolk County Music Educators Association’s High School All-County Music Festival, which will be held on November 16th at Northport High School. Oman was also selected as an All-State alternate. These three talented students were selected to participate in the AllCounty festival from a pool of hundreds of high school juniors and seniors

throughout Suffolk County, and their selection was based on a variety of factors. To earn one of the highly-coveted spots in the festival, students needed the highest level of recommendation from their high school music instructor as well as high scores at the New York State School Music Association festival. “On behalf of the music department, I would like to congratulate these hardworking and dedicated students that have been selected to participate in the 2012 NYSCAME/SCMEA AllCounty Festival,” said

Babylon Director of Fine Arts Angela Turk. “This is a great honor and one that recognizes these students as among the best musicians in the county. The district is extremely proud of their accomplishments.” Babylon’s fine arts department is also pleased to announce that Babylon High School students Genny Gravina, Carolanne Murphy and Miranda Richards were selected to have their artwork displayed at the New York State School Boards Association conference, which will be held later this year in Rochester, N.Y.
