Happy Thanksgiving from DeLisa Law Group, PLLC Hug your Children and Kiss your Wife. Be Thankful! A Home and Possessions can be replaced. Hurricane Sandy has changed the physical attributes of Long Island and has unfortunately FOREVER changed the value of our homes. The Extreme Weather events Hurricane Irene of 2011 and Super Storm Sandy of 2012 only differed in magnitude due to the Moon Tide. These events will continue more often in the future according to the National Weather Center. Our Government’s and Home Owners need to rebuild and fortify the waterfront to try and reduce the devastation from future storms. Call the “BullDogs” Today at 631-661-1100 for a Free Consultation if: • Your home is uninhabitable and you have a mortgage. • The Storm has made the value of your home less than your mortgage. • You believe that “No One” would want to buy a Home in your area due to flooding. • You are “Struggling” and cannot pay your mortgage and also pay for alternate housing. • Your Insurance proceeds are inadequate to repair and restore your home.
Let Us Help You Do It Right The First Time! At least 50% of the Borrowers that utilize our services have attempted loan modifications directly with their Lender or have been turned down previously! Did you send the same documents time and time again to your Lender only to be given excuses and the run-around? We don’t allow that NONSENSE, we hold them ACCOUNTABLE!
We FIGHT Lenders Every Day and WIN! The Legal System is on Your Side!

It’s no secret that dental work can be expensive - a basic checkup is pricey enough, but if there is a problem that requires more attention, a simple toothache can turn into a costly headache. Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be this way. Thousands of New Yorkers have already discovered the surefire solution with the EDP Dental Plan. For just $99 a year, members get the satisfaction of watching their dental bills get cut in half. In just one visit to the dentist, the plan often pays for itself! Since its inception more than 10 years ago, EDP Dental Plan has
carefully worked to build a network of more than 2,000 great providers located all over the state of New York, assuring that everyone can find a dentist they love. Best of all, members aren’t restricted by the same limitations presented by insurance - there is no waiting period, no yearly maximum, and anyone can join, regardless of age. Sign up with EDP Dental Plan today to start saving right away. With EDP’s substantial savings, you can’t afford to be without it! NORTH BABYLON EDITION - SOUTH BAY’S NEWS - WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 21, 2012
EDP DENTAL PLAN
The West Babylon Union Free School District is committed to promoting health and wellness within its schools. As such, many West Babylon community members came out in support of a healthy lifestyle during the district’s Annual Healthy Fun Run. All K-12 students, their families and staff were invited to participate, being encouraged to walk or run around the track to promote personal fitness. A YMCA Rock Wall and an inflatable obstacle course were made available for student use. T-shirts, designed by a West Babylon junior, were distributed to families who had pre-registered for the event. Many of the district’s sports teams were in attendance and offered “mini clinics” to the elementary students. “The purpose of activities like these is to promote healthy choices and lifestyles, as well as to enjoy a community event where every member can participate,” explained Christine Tona, executive director for curriculum and instruction. “Health and wellness has been a district focus for many years, and the Fun Run is just one of the annual events that exemplify this focus.”
Proudly Serving The Community Since 1953!

This holiday season, it seems especially appropriate to reflect on those things we are thankful for, individually and collectively. Considering all that most of us have been through – and continue to go through – over the last month, I believe most of us have found a new appreciation for those things formerly taken for granted. For one, if you are fortunate enough to spend this Thanksgiving holiday with your family, friends and loved ones, consider yourself ahead of the game. Sure, you may have to forgo the traditional turkey dinner at home, but was the holiday ever truly about the food to begin with?
other gymnasts represented Babylon High School at the Suffolk County championships, including Genny Gravina (all-around), Mikaila Hartigan (vault) and Shannon Hopkins (floor). Babylon’s varsity gymnastics team finished its season with a record of seven wins and three losses in League I. They finished third in the
county, just behind Smithtown and Ward Melville, at the team championships held on November 8th. Juniors Lizzy Logan, Caitlin Morgan and Samantha Sasso and eighth-grader Alex Singleton were named All-League, and senior Erica Baroncelli was named Honorable Mention All-League.
Hicks Nurseries, in partnership with Long Island Cares, is a distribution point for food and donations for storm victims. From now through the end of the year, the nursery will be collecting items to help Long Islanders in need. Items in particular need are bottled water, pouch drinks, new blankets, hats, gloves, scarves, underwear, household

cleaners, personal care items, pet food and nonperishable food. These items can be brought to the nursery, which is located at 100 Jericho Turnpike in Westbury, seven days a week for fast delivery to Long Island Cares for redistribution. Store hours are Saturday to Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., open late on Fridays until 8 p.m.
“For six generations, Hicks Nurseries and my family have been part of the Long Island community and the one thing that has been continuous over time is the will of Long Islanders to help each other get their lives back to normal in the wake of trying events,” says Stephen Hicks, president of Hicks Nurseries. “This recovery will be no different. Thank
you for helping us to help.” Hicks Nurseries, Long Island’s largest garden nursery (established by the Hicks family in 1853), is located at 100 Jericho Turnpike in Westbury; 5 1 6 . 3 3 4 . 0 0 6 6 ; www.hicksnurseries.com; http://www.facebook.com/ hicksnurseries The nursery is handicap accessible throughout.
Thankful Perhaps, for some. Food, coupled with football and Black Friday shopping, right? Well this year, it is about something else, something far more important to the big picture. Togetherness. Compassion. Charity. That sense of fulfillment that only comes from these qualities… if only it didn’t take natural disasters and national tragedies to bring this sort of behavior out. I suppose the better part of human nature is always there, just below the surface, pushed aside by the daily monotony of life’s obligations. But to see it on display… that’s something the likes of which we don’t witness nearly often enough. This Thanksgiving – and
Christmas, while we’re at it – the emphasis should be on the people we choose to celebrate with. The rest is material – the food, the gifts, the decorations – and can be modified on the fly. But the people… they cannot be replaced. We have all lost a lot over this last month; at the very least, a sense of security and complacency. Maybe this isn’t a bad thing. Perhaps it is a reminder that we should never take things for granted, and should always be moving forward. You simply never know when things will come to a grinding standstill. Let’s all enjoy the moments and the memories this holiday season. Absorb each and every one and savor them. Happy Thanksgiving.

Undefeated Season
The Babylon Panthers (8-0) football team completed its first undefeated regular season in close to a decade with a 34-0 shutout of Center Moriches on October 26th. Babylon set the tone early on, as it opened a 200 lead on a 20-yard rushing touchdown by quarterback Nick Santorelli, a 24-yard touchdown reception by Alex Zamet and a 3-yard run to the end zone by standout running back Eric Schweitzer. With the
victory, the Panthers extended their seasonopening win streak to eight, for their longest stretch of victories since the 2006-07 season. As for Santorelli, he’s been a shining star all season, and his second rushing touchdown of the game sent the Panthers into halftime with a 27-0 advantage. He completed six passes for 58 yards and a touchdown, and ran for 51 yards and a score. Jack Curcio tacked on a 2-yard rushing touchdown in the
third quarter to cap the scoring for Babylon. The Panthers have also been solid defensively, as they haven’t allowed a point in close to three full games. Babylon’s defense has held opponents scoreless for a total of 11 quarters, dating back to October 13th. The Panthers locked up first place in Suffolk Division IV, and they head into the Suffolk County playoffs with confidence. P l a y o f f schedules/opponents are yet to be determined.

direct assistance to employees impacted by the storm. Funds raised will be distributed through hospitals and health care organizations. Other associations involved in this national fund raising effort include the Northern Metropolitan Hospital Association, New Jersey Hospital Association, the Iroquois Healthcare Alliance, Rochester Regional Healthcare Association, and Western New York Healthcare Association. “Hospital employees demonstrated tremendous dedication during this crisis,” said Kevin Dahill, president/CEO of the NSHC. “These individuals suffered serious personal loss – many are now homeless – even as they worked to ensure the safety of those in their care. The fund is intended to assist those health care workers so that they will

Hospital and health care workers on Long Island and in other coastal areas of New York City and New Jersey were among the hardest hit by superstorm Sandy and thousands suffered devastating personal loss of homes and property. hotel rooms at the Holiday Inn Express so the Rider University Womens basket ball team could play at Stony Brook University. Rider University is located in Lawrenceville, New Jersey The game would have been canceled due a lack of accommodations. The southern contracted utility workers slept in sleeping bags in the main ball room of the hotel so the game would go on. The Stony Brook University Sea Wolves basketball team were grateful for the generosity bestowed to the local three village community of Long Island. Thousands
of residents and fans of the team would have been sad if there was no game. According to Mr. Tsunis, “During a crisis like Hurricane Sandy, it’s great to see people working together to make a difference. The Stony Brook University Athletic programs have provided a night of entertainment and family fun for those that have no heat or electricity in the local community. I commend the visiting electrical workers for making a sacrifice so the game could go on.’’
Stay On Long Island Initiative support as they transition from Suffolk to Stony Brook. Dr. McKay said the agreement is a continuation of his “Stay on Long Island” initiative. “I am pleased to expand the ‘Stay on Long Island’ initiative through our new partnership with Stony Brook University. The ‘Stay On Long Island’ program is one I have been working on closely with Presidents from Long Island’s four-year institutions to ensure select graduating scholars from Suffolk receive scholarships to attend colleges and universities right here in our community. Through these scholarships, students now have every chance for continued academic success and an increased likelihood that they will continue to live and work on Long Island. The ‘Stay on Long Island’ initiative is a way of cultivating the intellectual capital of those who have the best potential for transforming our region,” said Dr. McKay. Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD., President of Stony Brook University stated, “Stony Brook University and Suffolk County Community College have
a long-standing history, and an on-going commitment, to serve the educational needs and aspirations of Suffolk County residents. Each year more than 600 students from Suffolk County Community College enroll at Stony Brook, one of the country's leading research universities and a member of the AAU. Stony Brook is proud to sponsor scholarships through the ‘Stay on Long Island Initiative’ and we applaud the efforts of Suffolk County Community College and the other partner schools to help us keep the best and brightest minds here on Long Island. Our County and our State deserve no less.” Suffolk has similar agreements in place with Adelphi University, Briarcliff College, Dowling College, Five Towns College, Hofstra University, Long Island University - C.W. Post, Long Island University Riverhead, Long Island University - Brentwood, New York Institute of Technology, St. Joseph’s College and St. John’s University.
dozen workers from Texas, Colorado and Florida contacted Mercy about the need for shelter from the gathering nor’easter, they stated, “The hospital just said to come on down and rolled out the red carpet for us.” Mercy’s Environmental Services Department quickly and efficiently set up dormitory space near the hospital’s Emergency Department. It was the second time Mercy’s environmental services team was called to action to set up temporary
shelter during the ongoing weather emergency. In advance of the hurricane, the hospital took in 40 patients evacuated from Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip and 25 patients evacuated from a nursing home in Long Beach. Good Samaritan’s patients were returned to that facility shortly after Sandy passed, but Mercy has continued to provide housing for the nursing home patients more than a week after the storm.
Vet-Connect Vet Connect – a webbased initiative to raise awareness about the employment, health, and resource needs of veterans on Long Island, particularly returning veterans – is live today, just in time for Veteran’s Day. This public awareness initiative is the work of the NassauSuffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) and its member hospitals. NSHC is the association that represents these hospitals on a variety of hospital and health care legislative and regulatory issues. The initiative underscores hospitals’ recognition of the extraordinary service veterans have made to this country and hospitals’ commitment to assisting veterans with their
employment and health care needs. Vet Connect is being coordinated by NSHC’s Communications Committee and hospital human resource directors. Vet Connect can be accessed via NSHC’s home page at www.nshc.org. Once users click on the Vet Connect icon, they are brought to interior pages that provide direct links to hospitals’ job banks, military skills translation assistance, and health care career training programs for veterans. The service is also accessible via hospitals’ websites. Look for the Vet Connect logo. “Our hospitals recognize the extraordinary service our veterans have made to our country,” said Kevin Dahill, president/CEO of NSNC. “All of our
hospitals are committed to assisting veterans with their employment and health care needs. Vet Connect is a simple to use, one-stop resource for veterans that puts helpful information at their fingertips.” Phil Moschitta, director of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Northport, says a service like this is needed now more than ever. “It’s so reassuring to have the support of hospitals and health care leaders from across Long Island. Our veterans made great sacrifices to serve our nation and their high ideals to commitment and honor make them exemplary employees,” said Moschitta.

Suffolk County Community College and Stony Brook University have formalized a new partnership that will provide full-tuition scholarships annually to full-time students who graduate from Suffolk and transfer to Stony Brook. The agreement was signed by Dr. Shaun L. McKay, President of Suffolk County Community College, and Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD., President of Stony Brook University. As part of the agreement, Stony Brook University will offer one full-tuition scholarship to select graduates from each of Suffolk’s three campuses, each academic year. Nominees for the scholarship must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.75 and, in addition to superior academic achievement, must d e m o n s t r a t e contributions to their campus and communities through activities and student leadership. County Council was ready to provide support and service in a number of ways. Immediately following Hurricane Sandy, the Council’s Baiting Hollow Scout Camp opened to the community to provide hot showers, hot coffee, and bags of ice. Even though the camp sustained significant tree damage, none of the camp structures suffered serious harm. Providing showers, coffee, and ice was the first of a number of services provided by the Boy Scouts. A few days after the hurricane struck, National Grid contacted the Council to ask if Baiting Hollow Scout Camp could house and feed out-ofstate utility workers. Even though this request was unexpected, Council staff and volunteers rallied and, within 24 hours, provided sleeping quarters and meal preparation for up to two hundred emergency workers. Cots, blankets, linens, towels,
and other sundries were obtained and assembled in every heated building at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp. A hearty breakfast has been provided before dawn every day by volunteers and staff, enabling the work crews to be fed and on their job sites at the break of light. The Council also organized a clothing drive to assist members of the community who lost possessions in the hurricane. A large quantity of clothing has been collected both at the Council Service Center in Medford and at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp. It is not too late to contribute! New or used clothing in good condition can be dropped off at the Council Service Center, 7 Scouting Boulevard in Medford, or at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp, 1774 Sound Avenue in Calverton. While the Council organized these largescale relief efforts, local districts and units organized smaller efforts
targeting the hardest hit c o m m u n i t i e s , volunteering their time to help their neighbors in any way they can. Boy Scout Troops and Venturing Crews have been active in helping residents with skills learned in the Scouting program. As the overall relief effort continues to unfold, additional requests have been made of the Boy Scouts and the response has been in line with the Scout Slogan - “Do A Good Turn Daily. Governmental agencies such as the Suffolk County Office of Emergency Management have asked Baiting Hollow Scout Camp to assist with displaced families, families that have borne the brunt of Hurricane Sandy. Once again, the Boy Scouts jumped in with a “can-do attitude and found a way to provide up to 18 families with lodging, breakfast, and dinner at Baiting Hollow Scout Camp for the
foreseeable future. A sense of community and a strong desire to put the needs of others before ones own has driven the Boy Scouts response. Council staff and volunteers have been working around the clock to help emergency workers, displaced families, those with lost possessions, and those with basic needs like a hot shower or a bag of ice. FEMA, working through National Grid and the Suffolk County government, has provided the needed funding for the facilities, equipment, food, laundry services, and other essentials, and for that we are grateful. Most of all, though, we are thankful and proud of the volunteers who have worked every day to help our neighbors, using vacation time or working the volunteer effort like a second job, going to work during the day and caring for those in need at night. We couldn’t be more proud of our volunteers!

It’s snowing as I write this and, like many of you, I haven’t had electricity for ten days now. I’m wearing multiple layers of clothing and gloves, and it feels as if I’ll never be able to get warm again. But I need to reach out to you because our friends, our neighbors and our community needs our assistance. The following Town Shelters and Rescues are reaching out for the community’s help...
placed. Some are waiting for the power to be turned back on; others need to rebuild. These people are living with friends and in shelters. One of their serious concerns is their beloved pets. What we’re trying to organize is a list of people available to help, one family at a time. If you can open your home temporarily to a dog or cat - not an unknown stray; rather, someone’s pet - for a limited period of time, you would be helping a family in their worst hour. Many of these families just have nowhere to take their pets while they get themselves back together. With that in mind, please e-mail me if you are able to assist. If you can take someone’s pet, let me know exactly what your requirements are... Dog or cat? Size? Male or female? Friendly with other pets or kids? How long you can foster? If you can’t take in a pet but can help in some other way (maybe transport?), please let me know. And finally, if you have any ideas on how to make this endeavor work and want to help organize it, please let me know. We will take all the help we can get.
From Bulldog Rescue: Due to the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, many of our volunteers have been left without power, evacuated from their homes and tending to getting their own affairs in order. We are in great need of foster homes in New Jersey, Long Island and surrounding areas. This means that if you genuinely want to help a Bulldog who has no where else to turn, we will cover all approved medical expenses and will provide a MCM Rottweiler Rescue crate if needed. If you would like to volunteer to foster, please contact: www.mcmrottweilerrescue.petfinder.com Bulldogrescue1@aol.com. The Tour takes place the day after Thanksgiving, November 23rd, from 3 until 6 p.m. at the Society’s Maple Lane Museum Complex in Southold. “This is one of the most fun and entertaining events of the year,” stated Society Director Geoffrey K. Fleming, “It gives the Historical Society a chance to show off the great ingenuity and decorating expertise of its volunteers,” he continued. Each year a different group of local residents decorate the various areas of the Museum Complex. The Tour is as exciting for children as it is for the adults. Each period building is expertly decorated and arranged for visitors. Carefully placed candles and lanterns light the way through the grounds where tour guides in period hat and costume help the visiting public maneuver between the many buildings. While adults marvel at the decorations, children patiently await their visit with Santa, who is aided by his elves in the Pine Neck Barn. Each year the Candlelight Tour is different, and no two buildings are decorated in the same manner. Greens, swags, and red holiday ribbons flow over the mantels and furnishings in each of the historic
buildings on the Tour. In addition to these decorative treatments, special Holiday themed objects from the Society's rich collections will appear in these displays. At the Thomas Moore House early Christmas traditions and period music dominate the cozy interior. At the Ann Currie-Bell House there will be demonstrations of traditional holiday craft making, including embroidery, rug hooking, and knitting. In the Bay View Schoolhouse the old fashioned cast iron stove will rumble away as children seated nearby create custom ornaments to decorate the school tree. Musicians stroll the grounds in period costume while visitors wander between the many other buildings, including the Print Shop, Blacksmith Shop, Corncrib, Icehouse, and others. A special group of refreshments will be available to all who attend the Tour in the Pine Neck Barn Annex. The lighting of the Hamlet Christmas Tree, which is looked forward to by all, will take place in front of the Ann Currie-Bell House at 5 p.m. At the Society’s Prince Building, located on Main Road opposite Rothman’s Department Store, the Society’s consignment shop, the Treasure Exchange, will be open late (till 6 p.m.) for all those who wish to shop for the perfect Christmas gift or holiday item as will the Museum Gift Shop which is stocked with all sorts of wonderful holiday gift ideas, including
ornaments, books, children's toys. The Society's new building, the Reichert Family Center & Cosden Price Gallery, will also be open for visitors to see the current exhibition of paintings by Orient artist George W. Hallock (19161984). New this year, many of the village merchants in Southold will also be open late, with special treats at their many locations. The Candlelight Tour takes place at the Society’s Maple Lane Museum Complex which can be reached via Main Road (Route 25) in Southold. No reservations are required and the tour is free to all members of the public who wish to attend, though donations are graciously accepted. For further information on the Tour and the Society please call 631.765.5500 or visit us on the web at www.southoldhistoricalso ciety.org.

The Suffolk County Police Department has been selected as Employer of the Year by the New York State Cooperative Experiential Education Association (NYSCEEA) for its internship program with Suffolk County Community College. Police Officer Victoria Seeger, Suffolk County Police Department’s Internship Program
Director, recently received a plaque of recognition after a nomination from Debra Klein, Suffolk County Community College’s Internship Coordinator. The annual award by NYSCEEA recognizes outstanding contributions and accomplishments in the field of cooperative and/or experiential education and is given to employers in
both the profit and notfor-profit sector. NYSCEEA promotes and supports experiential education for college and university students in New York State. “The police department’s internship program, which has been in existence for approximately 20 years, provides interns with opportunities to observe

Scouts Host Out-Of-State Crews
The Boy Scouts of America, Suffolk County Council has opened its camp in Baiting Hollow to power crew workers who have travelled to Long Island from out of state to help in the restoration of electricity to Suffolk County. Up to 200 workers are being hosted at Suffolk County Council’s Baiting Hollow Scout Camp. The dining hall, which annually feeds thousands of Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, is now a combination of barracks and mess hall for these workers. Crews from as far away as California are staying at camp, enjoying hot meals,

showers, and clean beds. The camp is also providing laundry service for the crews. Thanks to the help of Scouting volunteers and camp staff, the crews have warm shelter from the cold as they continue to work to restore power to Long Islanders. The camp will remain available to these visiting workers for as long as needed. With area hotels already overfilled, the Boy Scouts of America is happy to assist in hosting power crews and workers as Long Island recovers from Hurricane Sandy. In addition, the Suffolk County Council is also coordinating food and
clothing drives with volunteers through the county in preparation for the holidays and upcoming winter. Each year, the Boy Scouts of America Scouting for Food drive collects and distributes over 80,000 lbs. of food to local pantries. This year they will double their efforts in anticipation of the needs of food pantries and kitchens following Hurricane Sandy. If you would like to assist in this effort, or would like to volunteer, please contact the Suffolk County Council, Boy Scouts of America at 631.924.7000, extension 110.

Funds Raised For Families The North Shore-LIJ Health System announced today it has raised about $2.3 million for a relief fund that will be used primarily to benefit hundreds of employees’ families devastated by Hurricane Sandy. Within 48 hours of landfall, the 16-hospital health system had placed 62 families into temporary housing, and those efforts have continued for hundreds of additional employees who were displaced. In addition, through the health system’s dedicated Emergency Employee Resource Center (EERC), North Shore-LIJ employees have already contributed over 1,000 vacation hours – totaling 137 business days – to impacted employees who will need to take time off to try to get their lives back in order. The EERC also has an online Community Forum where employees who want to help their coworkers in need can connect with them to coordinate direct donations, rides to work and other assistance. “Considering how so many North Shore-LIJ employees care for their patients during their critical hours of need, we’re proud to step up and take care of our colleagues when they need it most,” said Michael Dowling, president and chief executive officer of North Shore-LIJ. “Even
after Hurricane Sandy left death and destruction in her wake, there are untold stories of North Shore-LIJ caregivers who continued to come to work, despite losing their homes and most of their possessions to flooding and fires. Their extraordinary self-sacrifice, dedication and commitment are truly inspiring. Equally inspiring is the outpouring of support from North Shore-LIJ employees for their struggling coworkers. I extend my deepest appreciation to all of our employees who have generously donated money and time off to their colleagues in need.” Hundreds of North Shore-LIJ employees have already benefited from the health system’s employee relief efforts. Following are a few of their stories. Of the $2.3 million pledged thus far for relief efforts, about $2 million represent the proceeds from Monday evening’s Lenox Hill Autumn Ball at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Manhattan. Event proceeds typically go toward the hospital’s capital projects, but in the wake of Hurricane Sandy and the destruction it caused throughout the tri-state area, Mr. Dowling decided to redirect funds from the event toward North ShoreLIJ’s employee relief fund,
as well as charities supporting other hurricane victims in the community. Those wishing to support the effort can send a donation by check payable to the North Shore-LIJ Hurricane Sandy Employee Relief Fund and mail it to: NSLIJ Health System Foundation, 125 Community Drive, Great Neck, NY, 11021, or contribute on line at: https://support.northshorel ij.com/sandyrelief. To learn about other ways to assist, go to: www.northshorelijhelps.co m.
