More than 800 Stony Brook University students, faculty and other individuals participated in a Bone Marrow Registry Drive on November 14th to help those with leukemia or lymphoma who are in need a bone marrow transplant to beat their disease. The drive was organized by four Stony Brook University Students, who partnered with DKMS Americas, the world’s largest marrow donor center. The successful drive had been organized by students Derek Cope,

Maggie Knight, Samuel Rosner, and Peter Sheh. They developed a campuswide effort for the drive that included numerous locations for individuals to join the registry – the Student Activities Center and Campus Recreation Center on the University’ main campus; and Stony Brook University Hospital, the Cancer Center, and Health Sciences tower on the Stony Brook Medicine campus. Each day 7,500 people are searching for a match on the National Bone Marrow Registry. Six out

I used to be one of those people who avoided shopping like the plague. And Black Friday shopping? Well, that was an event reserved exclusively for those truly insane individuals hell bent on camping out for some amazing sale or another. Not me. Not ever. And yet… Last year was my first venture into the madness. Considering I hate shopping in general, crowds even more, and don’t even bother to compose a Christmas list until the first week of December – I

would say I handled it pretty well. Great sales, manageable crowds = many purchases for moi. This year, what with the aftermath of the storm and a general lack of festiveness, Christmas shopping was among the last things on my mind. But then I thought – retail therapy…couldn’t hurt, could it? Nothing brings a smile to most peoples’ faces like new “stuff,” whether desperately needed or not. Sure it’s frivolous. Unnecessary even. But who cares? At a certain point, we owe it to ourselves to do whatever it is that brings us pleasure

and takes our mind off the more serious issues at hand. All the problems will still be there come morning, believe me. No sense dwelling on reality. Rather, try your best to turn any negatives into positives whenever possible. Idealistic? Sure. But the holidays are a time for idealism if ever there was one. A time for making wishes and hoping they come true, for starting over and for appreciating everyone and everything just a little bit more... As the Holiday season approaches, NEFCU, a leading credit union serving all Long Island’s banking needs, is keeping with the spirit of the season and giving back to the communities they serve with their A Season of Giving Charity Donations Contest. The contest will take place on Facebook via a special application. “Likes” of the page can nominate and then vote for their chosen charity. All nominated charities must meet NEFCU’s community based goals. The organization with the most votes will receive a charitable contribution from NEFCU in the amount of $2,500. The second most frequently voted charity will receive $1,500, and the third will receive $1,000. The contest will begin on November 26th. Nominations must be

made by 5 p.m. EST on December 9th. Voting will end at 5 p.m. EST on December 21st. “NEFCU has a proud 74 year history of giving back to the communities we serve and we are pleased to donate $5,000 to local Long Island charities this holiday season,” said Valerie Garguilo, Vice President of Marketing & Community Relations for NEFCU. “There are so many deserving charities doing great work here on Long Island. The Friends of Mercy Medical Center will donate a portion of the proceeds from the 76th Annual Mercy Ball to benefit local Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. The December 1st event at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City begins the hospital’s 2013 Centennial Celebration. “As we support the hospital as it begins its second century, we feel it is equally important to support the community’s recovery from the catastrophic impact of the storm and its aftermath,” said Friends of Mercy president Christopher Kearns of Rockville Centre. “And all are welcome to join us in that effort by attending or supporting the event.” The chairman for the event this year is threedecade Rockville Centre resident Tom Alexanderson, who is well-

known for his leadership in community activities. Three major awards will be presented: •John F. Coghlan of Rockville Centre, retired from a distinguished career in investment banking and a founder of the Dorothy Rodbell Cohen Foundation for Sarcoma Research, will receive the Bishop John R. Pilot Program Good Samaritan Hospital enacted a pilot program this past summer to identify all current and former members of the United States Armed Services who present in its Emergency Department in need of medical care.

Between 70 and 90 veterans each week are identified and provided information about the health care benefits to which they may be entitled. The hospital is advocating for state legislation mandating that

all hospitals and clinics ask a patient’s military status and that health care providers be trained on available resources to assist veterans with their health care needs.

Babylon Memorial Grade School is teaming up with DoSomething.org this month for the 6th Annual Tweens for Jeans campaign to benefit American homeless youth. Thousands of homeless people in the United States are under the age of 18, and one of the first items they ask for when reaching a shelter is a pair of jeans. To lend a helping hand, Babylon students set up jean collection bins in the grade school's front lobby and asked friends, family and classmates to donate pairs of gently worn jeans. In the first five years of this nationwide initiative, over 2.5 million jeans have been collected and donated, and the early indications are that the 2012-2013 campaign will be the biggest yet. EXPLORING CULTURE - Kindergarten students of Forest Avenue Elementary School in the West Babylon Union Free School District took part in an interactive lesson on Native American life and traditions.

Exploring Culture On Monday, November 19th, the kindergarten students of Forest Avenue Elementary School in the West Babylon Union Free School District took part in an engaging interactive lesson on Native American life and traditions. The lesson, led by kindergarten teacher Susan Dieterle, introduced students to authentic Native American dances and songs as well as a variety of artifacts from Native American culture. The students discussed aspects of the first Thanksgiving and compared them with the Thanksgiving celebrations that take place today. They also enthusiastically explored an authentic teepee set up in the buildingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cafeteria. Mrs. Dieterle created this program based on her own interest in the subject and has been presenting the topic to kindergarten classes for years, turning it into a Thanksgiving tradition at Forest Avenue. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s something that I truly enjoy doing for the students,â&#x20AC;? she remarked.
