Long Island native, Elaine Faith Thompson has been chosen by Bruno Event Team to paint and design the commemorative poster for the 2013 U.S. Women’s Open Championship. The Women’s Open, conducted by the United States Golf Association, will be held June 27th-30th, 2013, at Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton. Thompson is honored to have been commissioned to paint Sebonack for the Women’s Open. Inspired by the magnificent golf course and its spectacular views of the Peconic Bay, she is presently working every day to complete the painting in time for holiday gifts. Thompson painted the commemorative painting of Bethpage in 2002 and worked with the USGA on posters for the 2004 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, the 2006 U.S. Open at Winged Foot and the 2009 U.S. Open at Bethpage State Park’s Black Course. Peter King and Babylon Town Council Member Jacqueline Gordon helped to prepare, serve and deliver the meals. Many community groups donated their time, money and effort to this annual event. Thanks for the generosity of Walmart,

Stop and Shop Supermarkets and J.F. Goode Funeral Home. Local restaurants, Dinner’s Ready, Villa D’Avanzo, Vittorio’s, South Bay Diner and Something Special Deli, cooked many of the turkeys for this feast.

Kennedy Elementary School in the West Babylon Union Free School District recently joined music teacher Debbie Cicogna at the SCMEA PEAK (Parents, Educators and Kids) music festival at Northport High School. Festival participants comprised of students,

parents and music teachers attended music and dance workshops throughout the day. Students were chosen by lottery from a pool of those who love music and demonstrate an ability to excel in music class. Throughout the day, fourth-grade students and their teachers were provided with opportunities to learn and experience music in a

variety of unique ways. “Students had the opportunity to experience a fun day of learning new songs, dances and musical games along with their parents as partners,” commented Ms. Cicogna. “It was truly wonderful to see the parents having so much fun singing and dancing with their children.”

Raising Funds For Relief to bid in the special Hockey With A Heart auction featuring one-of-a-kind sports and entertainment experiences. Local sports teams, organizations and individuals all donated to this unique auction, hosted by the Islanders, in an effort to help those who were affected by Hurricane Sandy. Fifteen donors contributed a total of 33

items, which were bid on more than 300 times. This auction raised $22,317 that will all go towards the American Red Cross Hurricane Sandy Relief fund. On Monday, November 12th, the Islanders held the Hockey With A Heart open skate fundraiser. The team invited all area residents to join them for a day away

from dealing with the Hurricane damage and over 2,000 people attended. The Islanders and SMG opened Nassau Coliseum’s ice free of charge for anyone who participated. Those who visited the arena were encouraged to bring monetary and nonperishable donations, while all concession proceeds also went directly to those in

need. All together, along with employees from the New York Islanders, arena management company SMG and Coliseum concessionaire SAVOR, the team collected over 5,200 pounds of food, $5,754 in cash and countless amounts of clothing that filled two 24-foot box trucks amounting to 13,000

pounds. The Islanders donated all bedding, blankets and clothing to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island, all food and baby supplies to Island Harvest and all money to the American Red Cross’ Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund to assist Long Islanders in need.

“This is an important lesson for the students,” remarked Ms. Fitzgerald. “It brings to life the concepts of community taught in first grade while reinforcing and supporting the character education lessons that are such an important part of their development.”
