chwarting Elementary School in the Plainedge School District has been studying nutrition and healthy choices lately. As a means to fulfilling the new Common Core ELA standards, students were asked to exhibit a response to specific themes, conduct a research project and then present their knowledge and ideas. To culminate the unit, students created public service announcements about a designated food group and presented their final work to parents and special guests. Each group wrote their own script, filmed their segments and edited the work using Windows Movie Maker.

I hate learning new things. I do. Sure, it’s great to broaden your horizons and add skills to your repertoire, but the actual learning process? Not so much fun. I prefer to fast forward to the part where I miraculously become highly proficient at something (which sometimes never happens) rather than muddle for too long in the learning curve portion.

The funny part is that, with most things, once this “curve” has been navigated, you often realize that the new thing you were so

hesitant to take on wasn’t so bad in the first place.

Simple, even. Just took a little getting used to, was all. Over time, we seem to be able to adapt to anything.

Think about it. Look back on all your years in school… weren’t you nervous the first time being tested on a particular subject? Didn’t you get butterflies the morning of a big presentation? Wasn’t your initial reaction to any massive projects to immediately push them to the back of your mind and procrastinate?

New = Frightening then, and it still does, to some extent, now.

They often say you should try one new thing each and every day – whether something as simple as tasting a new food, reading a new book or buying a new pair of jeans…right on up to the more monumental decisions of whether to search for a new job or buy a new house or travel the world.

New = Exciting. It signifies growth, maturity, experience – all those things associated with moving onward and upward.

Sometimes, all it takes is a little help navigating the curve to ultimately see the path for what it is – a straight line to improvement.

A big local and national news story of 2012 was Hurricane Sandy, the largest Atlantic Ocean hurricane on record, which created unprecedented destruction in New York and New Jersey in lost lives and property. Youth soccer organizations affiliated with the U.S. Youth Soccer have responded.

Region 1 established a Disaster Relief Grant Program for Region 1 clubs/organizations that have suffered damage as a result of the storm. 20 grants, each up to $2,000, are being awarded.

On the way to a total donation of $80,000, the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) has given $46,000 in checks to its needy clubs. The money has already been sent to those needy clubs in the Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League (CJSL), Staten Island Youth Soccer League (SIYSL) and Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) for Hurricane Sandy Relief.

Additionally, the LIJSL has established a Disaster Relief Fund Program of $125,000 for its members/ clubs that suffered damage as a direct result from Hurricane Sandy. Approved funds are available to be awarded. In order to be eligible to receive a LIJSL Hurricane Sandy Fund, the individual or club must be an affiliated organization with the LIJSL, ENYYSA and US Youth Soccer.

The East Hudson Youth Soccer League (EHYSL) was not as affected by Hurricane Sandy as its downstate neighbors so they have graciously donated $4,000 to the SIYSL and $2,000 to the LIJSL. While all these good works continue, a for-profit company, SportsSignup in Saratoga Springs, made a $10,000 donation last month to ENYYSA leagues most affected by Hurricane Sandy. The CJSL, SIYSL and LIJSL each received $3,333.

Grants Awarded

Bike New York recently announced dates and details for the 2013 TD Five Boro Bike Tour, held Sunday, May 5th, 2013.

The Tour will be returning to a “rush” first-cthome, first-serve registration system which will open on Tuesday, January 22nd at 12:00 p.m. EST. Held annually the first Sunday in May, the TD Five Boro Bike Tour is America’s largest cycling event with a 40 mile, traffic-free ride through all five boroughs for 32,000 cyclists. The Tour is co-produced

by Bike New York, the city’s premiere bicycling organization, and the New York City Department of Transportation, in association with multiple City of New York departments.

Proceeds from the event fund Bike New York’s education program “This annual springtime ritual --which keeps growing in popularity

-- is simply the most exciting way to experience the dynamic, diverse neighborhoods in all five boroughs of our great city,” said Ken Podziba, President and CEO of Bike New York. “Bicyclists wait all year to feel the thrill and freedom of riding 40 miles on car-free streets, highways and bridges as they only can in the TD Five Boro Bike Tour.”

2013 TD Five Boro Bike Tour regular registration will be a “rush” registration system, similar to 2011 where the Tour’s first-come, firstserve registration system sold out in less than 24 hours. With the return to a rush system, Bike New York anticipates a similar sellout for the 2013 Tour.

Those interested in participating in the TD Five Boro Bike Tour will have the opportunity to register starting on January 22 at 12:00 p.m.

Youth registration will take place in conjunction with an individual adult registration.

All youth registrations must maintain a one child to one adult ratio. Participants hoping to ride with friends and family will have the opportunity to link their registrations together after the event sells out.

Bike New York has also partnered with onPeak

to provide more options for out-of-town visitors to find accommodations with competitive rates at convenient locations throughout the city. Details to convenient and affordable accommodations will be available during the registration process.

Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia New York City Bike New York, in partnership with the Giro d’Italia, is adding a new way to ride the TD Five Boro Bike Tour. This new VIP registration option will give riders the chance to test their limits, with a timed climb up the Verrazano Bridge. In addition, all Giro riders receive an exclusive Italian-made Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia New York City jersey to wear during the event.

Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia New York City registration opens on January 22nd at 12:00 p.m. EST. It is only available for riders 18 years

of age and older. “We’re excited to partner with the Giro d’Italia and bring two of the world’s largest cycling events together,” said Podziba. More details will be available in the following weeks.

“Ride for a Reason” Charity Program Regular registration and the Gran Fondo Giro d’Italia New York City are not the only ways to ride in the 2013 TD Five Boro Bike Tour. Prospective riders can also “Ride for a Reason” and champion one of Bike New York’s 43 charity partners.

“Last year’s ‘Ride for a Reason’ charity program was a great success, raising more than $1.1 million for our partner charities,” said Podziba. “Based on last year’s fundraising accomplishment, we’re excited to see this year’s results from our charity partners. Fundraising for a charity is a tremendous way to give back and

support a meaningful cause while having the time of your life.”

Smithtown resident Krystin Brescia, a teacher at The Children’s Center of United Cerebral Palsy Association of Suffolk, has been named a 2012-2013 Dowling College/News 12 Long Island Educator of the Month. Nominations were accepted from schools throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties, and a committee of distinguished educators selected the winners. A special feature highlighting Ms. Brescia will air on News 12 and she will be honored at a special dinner in the spring along with the other awardees.

After completing her student teaching requirements at The Children’s Center in 2004, Ms. Brescia was hired as a special education teacher. In dealing with students who have varying disabilities, including some who are nonverbal, visually or hearing impaired, and physically

or mentally challenged, Krystin is both creative and sensitive to the learning styles of each student.

She works individually with each child to ensure that they are positioned to achieve their goals and gain independence.

According to Sherri Glazier, Director of Education/Principal at The Children’s Center, “She is truly an advocate for her students.

Ms. Brescia constantly and tirelessly seeks resources and opportunities to give her students real life experiences – such as recycling, money skills, math lessons and teamwork.

Skills they will take with them when they graduate from our program.

We are very fortunate to have her on our staff.”

Dr. Clyde Payne, Dean of Dowling’s School of Education says, “Long Island is known for having

the best teachers in the nation, and we received so many nominations from across Nassau and Suffolk, and are only able to select 12 winners.

Krystin Brescia is truly a remarkable educator as evidenced by her skill, her talents, and the praise she received from parents and co-workers who nominated her.”

In her remarks Ms. Brescia said she is rarely at a loss for words, but expressed deep gratitude for being nominated and selected a 2012-2013 Dowling College/News12 Educator of the Year.

Oyster Bay Town residents are reminded that the First Half of the 2013 General Tax Levy is due on January 1st, but can be paid without penalty through February 10th. Please be certain to sign your check, payable to James J. Stefanich, Receiver of Taxes. Indicate your property’s S.D. Code, Section, Block, Lot, and Phone number on the check.

“By law, a taxpayer has a 40-day penalty free period from the date the tax is due during which payment may be made

without penalty,” Receiver Stefanich explained. “After the 40 days, a one percent penalty is added for each month the tax remains unpaid, retroactive to January 1st.”

“Tax Bills are expected be mailed in the beginning of January, after the collection warrant’s computer-based information is processed, verified and certified as correct by the Receiver’s Office.”

“Residents can pay in person, by either cash or check, at the Tax Office, Oyster Bay Town Hall West, 74 Audrey Avenue,

Oyster Bay, or by check only at the Receiver of Taxes Office, Town Hall South, 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa. Our office in Town Hall South can be accessed by the rear entrance to the building.

In addition, the Hicksville Annex in the TOB Parking Facility, 55 Duffy Avenue, Hicksville will be open to accept payments by check only, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on February 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 11th. When paying the tax bill in person, taxpayers are reminded to bring the entire tax bill with their

payments.”

“Residents who prefer to mail in their payments should send them to the Office of the Receiver of Taxes, 74 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, N.Y. 117711539. Payments being made by mail should include the first half stub.

Residents should NOT write on, fold, staple or otherwise deface the tax stub as it can cause the computer system to reject the payment.”

“Starting on January 4th, taxpayers will have immediate access to 2013 General tax information

on our online system via a link on the Town website, www.oysterbaytown.com.

Residents may view current tax bills, print out a hard copy, or pay taxes with an ACH check payment or credit card. Residents should be aware there is a service fee for paying taxes online (Town of Oyster Bay receives no portion of fee).

Massapequa High School music department brought the sounds of the season to the community during its annual Daytime Holiday Concert, December 18th.

Members of the Women’s Chorus, Symphony Orchestra, and A Capella Choir directed by Ilena Dempsey, Marjorie Spagnuolo and Nichole Greene, respectively, performed a festive arrangement of traditional holiday songs mixed with those enjoyed around the world.

Some highlights included Carol of the Bells, O Holy Night, Sleigh Ride, Hanukkah,

Light of Lights and Chanukah Festival Overture.

Audience members, some dressed in holiday attire, showed their appreciation for the concert with their applause and smiles.

“We know this has been a difficult fall,” said Superintendent Charles Sulc, “but I hope we can put that aside for a while and experience the joy and happiness of the holiday season. We have a tremendous music department here in Massapequa Schools with outstanding students and we are happy to share this wonderful show with you.”

“Our students and

staff have worked very hard over the last few months,” added Dr. David Gaines, the district’s curriculum associate for Music.

“We are thrilled to not only spread some cheer through music, but also provide an opportunity to show the community the talent and quality of the music department that exists here in the district.”

The district also held its annual holiday concert for parents and family members and called Massapequa High School graduates to the stage during its holiday alumni concert.

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Muscarella reminds residents in Town of Oyster Bay Sanitation Collection Districts that Christmas trees should be put out as part of their yard waste recycling, on their regular S.O.R.T. collection day.

“Residents should put out their living Christmas trees as part of their regular

yard waste collection,” C o u n c i l m a n Muscarella said.

“Sanitation crews will pick up the trees as part of the Town’s yard waste program.”

The Councilman explained that under this program, yard waste is taken to compost facilities.

The cost to take these materials to a compost facility is less than the cost to dispose

of them at an out-ofstate landfill. Also, some of the compost is made available, freeof-charge, to residents for use on their home gardening and landscaping projects.
