Flashbacks & Fun Times You never know what you might find when cleaning out the closet. I recently came across a handful of those origami-type, square and triangle-folded notes that we all used to exchange like crazy back in middle school. I remember writing dozens upon dozens of them and slipping them through the vents of my friends’ lockers between classes, then excitedly waiting for them to write back so I would have my own “mail” to look forward to the next time I stopped at my own locker. How funny. It’s too bad I didn’t save them all, as I’m sure they would have made for some fascinating reading all these

years later. Notes full of class schedules, song lyrics, lists of boys we had crushes on…the usual pre-teen drama that seemed oh-soimportant at the time. We even developed our own language of sorts, with abbreviations and symbols that (so we thought) only we could comprehend. Such innocence. And then there were the “love” letters, those cute little poems surrounded by lots of hearts and x’s and o’s, and of course the requisite “A.A.F.” signifying the “always and forever” mentality that all 12 year-olds seem to have with regard to “love.” As corny as it all sounds now, there was definitely an underlying sweetness to those types of notes, a sense that somehow, with that

scrawled message of affection, everything was “official.” It’s a wonder, thinking back on it, how any of us managed to get any work done in between composing these little nuggets of wisdom – because you know they all had to be written during class time. After all, how else to make sure our friends were continuously updated on our comings and goings from the last 40 minute class! So many memories encapsulated by those little folded pieces of paper. A slice of life, preserved for all eternity on an 8-1/2 x 11-inch piece of loose-leaf paper. It doesn’t get any better than that. Can’t wait to see what other treasures my closet will uncover.

benefit for the local economy over the first five years of operation. County Executive Mangano stated, “This new state-of-the-art sports and recreation center is an exciting component of the Hub that will create jobs, complement Nassau’s sports-entertainment tourism plan and provide youth athletes access to world class skating facilities. I am delighted that Nassau County is able to partner with Chris and Peter Ferraro to bring this outstanding facility here. Creating this kind of sports entertainment destination will enhance our quality of life as well as create

jobs and opportunities for residents.” Nassau County selected Twin Rinks at Eisenhower, LLC to construct the $15 million private-financed facility after issuing a Request-for-Proposals in June 2012. Twin Rinks at Eisenhower, LLC is comprised of former NHL players Chris and Peter Ferraro of Ferraro Brothers Hockey, as well as Joel Friedman of Clearview Capital Management, LLC and Ronald Friedman of SilvermanAcampora, LLP. breaking of the facility. To be completed in four stages, Twin Rinks at Eisenhower Park will include Ferraro Brothers Ice Center, an 85,000 square foot world-class facility with two NHL regulation-sized rinks and one outdoor recreational hockey rink that will host skating lessons, youth player development programs, tournaments, and hockey teams for all ages and skill levels. The facility will also include one full-size turf field with soccer and lacrosse lines, a sport court with four NBA/NCAA regulation basketball courts, a handball wall and a rollerblade and stroller path connecting the complex with the pre-existing paths that surround the Nassau County Aquatic Center. The Ferraro brothers hope the new facility will

provide youth players’ opportunities never before seen on Long Island. “It is our passion to support Long Island families so that they will no longer have to be torn apart or have their family life disrupted just because a child excels in hockey and wants to try to make it to the NHL,” said Chris Ferraro. “This facility will enable us to create a hockey hot bed right here on Long Island.” “We were extremely fortunate that our parents had the means and the desire to take us where we needed to go to succeed. Because of our experiences, we are able to give back and guide young players along a path to develop, to teach the importance of camaraderie, sportsmanship and integrity without having to travel off Long Island,” said Peter Ferraro.

Funded entirely by Twin Rinks at Eisenhower, LLC the center will be the home of at least two youth hockey organizations, including the Long Island Gulls Amateur Hockey Association and the New York Junior Bobcats. It will also play host to in-house figure skating programs, learn to skate programs, a recreational youth hockey league and adult hockey leagues. “This is a great day for Nassau County and a great day for the sport of hockey,” said Richard “Big Daddy” Salgado. “I grew up here and know there has never been anything like Twin Rinks. The County Executive is bringing so much to Nassau with this project. More jobs, a world class facility and hockey programs which will provide quality coaching for kids and adults and start turning more Long Island youth into NHL stars.”

How To Help Guests Save On Travel

Because traveling to a wedding can be such a costly expenditure, many couples look for ways to alleviate some of the financial pressure that this travel places on their guests. The following are a few ways couples can do just that.

Your Spectacular Waterfront Wedding

* Find an airport-friendly wedding destination. Couples who can get married within a short distance of a major airport can save their guests a significant amount of money. A major airport has more flights, and that can translate to more options and more affordable flights for your guests. In addition, a wedding destination that is close to an airport reduces the chance that guests will have to pay for rental cars. A cab ride to the hotel might be less expensive than a rental car, which guests may not need aside from getting to and from the airport.

Come visit “The best kept secret on Long Island”. Where we make the dream of your waterfront wedding come true!

* Inquire about group airline rates. Couples know to negotiate group hotel rates for their wedding guests, but few may know it’s possible to negotiate group airline rates as well. If a large number of your wedding guests will be traveling from the same city, contact the major airlines to see if they offer group travel discounts. Many airlines do, so comparison shop to find your guests the best deal.

Weddings are typically expensive affairs. Couples may be willing to go the extra mile and stretch their finances for their big day, but what about their guests? Couples ask much of their out-of-town wedding guests, who must arrange for travel and lodging and possibly even childcare if they are bringing young children.

* Consider a longer engagement. A longer engagement can save your guests money on travel. Couples who choose to have a longer engagement and send savethe-date cards out early are giving their guests more time to book flights and find deals. Flights tend to be less expensive when booked well in advance, so a longer engagement gives guests more time to find a flight that’s affordable. In addition, travelers who can book early often get the first crack at the best flight times, saving themselves the nuisance of taking a red-eye flight or traveling early in the morning.

What would a wedding day be without flowers? The beauty and the aroma of fresh-cut flowers can create a welcoming atmosphere and complement the beauty and the style of a wedding wardrobe. Flowers are often the first things that guests see upon arriving for the ceremony, and they may even be something guests take home at the end of the night. Flowers create an air of romance, and most couples want to make flowers -- whether fresh or silk -- an integral part of their wedding day.

through an advertisement or if he or she has been featured in publications. Keep a scrapbook of the colors, types of flowers and arrangements and any other ideas that attract you so you will be able to present this information to the florist.

As with any decision when planning a wedding, choosing the right flowers requires some research and a basic knowledge of which flowers will convey the message and the theme of your wedding. The number of colors, textures and combinations that can be created are so numerous that couples may feel the decision on the floral arrangements is best left to the florist. But it doesn’t take a lot of expertise to know what you want, and it is important for couples to convey their feelings to the florist. Consider these tips when choosing a florist and selecting flowers.

* Establish your flower budget prior to sitting down with the florist. You should expect to pay at least 8 percent of the total wedding cost on flowers. Get an estimate on the floral arrangement and then tweak your needs according to your budget. Many florists can modify arrangements and find a middle ground with regard to cost. Selecting flowers that are in-season will result in more affordable rates than if you desire exotic or out-of-season blooms. * Once you’ve hired the florist, you can come up with a wedding flower worksheet that establishes all of your needs. The florist may ask for specific information, such as photos of the bride’s gown as well as the colors and styles that the wedding party will be wearing. A good florist knows that a bouquet should not overpower or detract from the beauty of the bride. The florist may want to mimic textures from the dress, such as beading, with smaller flowers or berries within the arrangement. The groom’s boutonniere is traditionally one of the flowers from the bride’s

* Experts advise that a couple start looking for a florist at least six months before the wedding, especially if the wedding will take place during the peak season of May through September. Get recommendations from friends as to which florist they used or find out if your wedding planner or banquet hall manager recommends a particular florist. Some catering halls have agreements with florists, and they work together. * Browse magazines to get ideas of what you like. You also may be able to find a florist

bouquet so that the look is cohesive. * Ceremony flowers may be traditional, and some houses of worship have strict guidelines as to what can and cannot be used. However, reception flowers can be where you show off your creativity and whimsy. After all, this is a party and it should be fun. You may want to give the florist more freedom of expression with regard to reception centerpieces and flowers that adorn other areas of the room. * Because receptions tend to take place in the evening hours and are often indoor affairs, experts say that added lighting may be needed to put emphasis on the floral centerpieces and help present them in their best light. You may want to think about hiring a lighting designer to spotlight some areas of the room or at the very least incorporate candlelight into your centerpiece arrangements. * To give the impression that there are more flowers than there really are, use fragrance and filler as your tools. Fragrant flowers can fill up the room with a welcoming aroma. Look for frangipani, lilies, hyacinths, jasmine, and sweet peas for a big impact. Florists know how to stretch arrangements by using greenery and other filler to lend bulk without too much extra cost. *Experienced florists will know how long it takes certain buds to open and show off their maximum beauty. Therefore, expect a florist to be working on your floral arrangements as much as a week before the wedding date -- purchasing containers, cleaning flowers and waiting for certain ones to open fully. Minimize changes close to your wedding date as most things will already be started. * It is possible to make your own centerpieces or bouquets if you so desire. Simplicity will work best for the novice. Think about grouping similar-hued calla lilies together for a bridal bouquet. Hydrangea and peonies are larger flowers that can easily fill up a vessel on a table as a centerpiece. White flowers will coordinate with any color scheme and could be the easiest to mix and match. White blooms include sweet pea, rose, camellia, stephanotis, narcissus, gardenia, orchid, lily of the valley, jasmine, and gypsophila. Flowers are one component of the wedding that will help achieve the magic and beautiful atmosphere couples desire.

Tips For Selecting Wedding Day Flowers

When polling married couples, you will likely find they would change “this” or “that” about their weddings if given the chance to do it all over again. Here is some advice that you can choose to follow for your wedding day. Tip #1: Trust your vendors Couples often have unique ideas for their wedding day. It may seem tempting to spell out what you want in minute detail and insist on wedding vendors carrying out your wishes to a T. But the smarter idea may be to give vendors a little more free reign -- after all, they are the professionals.

together? “If Ihad to do it all again, I would skip the dessert bar I had at my wedding,” says Alice C., Ohio. “The spread of pies, pastries, cookies, and chocolates certainly looked impressive, but it cost me a small fortune. Also, people filled up on the dessert bar so much, they no longer had room to taste my specialordered wedding cake.” Tip #3: Don’t overextend Your wedding will hopefully be a once-in-a-lifetime event. Therefore, couples often plan to spend a good deal of money to ensure their special day is perfect. Weddings are still viewed as a high-priority

North Massapequa - South Bay’s Neighbor NEWSPAPERS - Wednesday January 30, 2013

Once you announce your plans to get married, there’s a good chance that people close to you will be ready and willing to dispense their share of advice. Some words of wisdom will be priceless, while others you can store away for another day.

Be Open To Ideas And Expertise

expense and most couples save for a long period of time despite sluggish consumer spending reports. According to the market research and analysis firm IBISWorld, nearly 60 percent of couples go over their budgets when getting married. Some do so at the risk of being in debt afterward. “It can be easy to get carried away in wedding spending,” shares Deirdre H., Michigan. “I went way over budget when getting my wedding gown and a few other components of my wedding. My husband and I struggled the first year of our marriage trying to fix our finances and battling a bad case of moneyrelated stress.” Try to stick to a budget as much as possible so that you can enjoy yourself not only on the wedding day, but also long after the honeymoon has ended. Tip #4: Keep it in the family

“I had a vision in my head of what I wanted my centerpieces to look like,” offers Jean M., Connecticut. “I gave the florist my suggestions and the ‘feel’ of what I was trying to create, but ultimately Ileft the finished product up to her. When I walked into the reception hall and saw my centerpiece baskets overflowing with fallhued flowers, berries and twinkling candles, I was so excited I had left it up to the expert.”

Selecting members of your wedding party can be challenging because there may be so many special people in your lives right now that you want to honor. Choosing a best man and a maid/matron of honor is a large responsibility because these people stand out in the wedding. Although couples struggle with their choices and want to please everyone, your safest bet is to choose a family member.

When deciding on particular aspects of the wedding, you can give your general ideas, but leave the finished product to the professionals. Don’t list every song you want the deejay to play or micromanage all of the poses the photographer should take. After all, experienced pros have likely done this dozens of times in the past and could produce results you never dreamed possible.

“I ended up choosing my best friend over my sister as maid of honor,” says Clara T., Arizona. “Although we were very close at the time, we’ve since grown apart due to work relocation. My sister and I, however, talk and hang out frequently. I regret not having asked my sister to be my maid of honor, considering hers is a friendship I know will last a long time.”

Tip #2: Scale down

Unless you don’t have close family members or your relationship with your siblings or cousins is strained, choose a family member to serve as best man or maid of honor.

Unless you are planning on auditioning for the show “Over-the-Top Weddings,” it might pay to make your wedding more about being personal and less about wowing the crowd with special effects and expensive treats. It’s easy to be lured into extra dinner courses or be persuaded to release doves at the ceremony, but will these extras impact your relationship or the life you will be building

It is easy to be overwhelmed when planning a wedding, and couples can expect to be bombarded with advice. However, it could pay to heed the advice of couples who have already lived and learned from their wedding choices.

Ever since Kate Middleton walked down the aisle at Westminster Abbey in her fabulous fitted gown and crystal teardrop earrings, brides everywhere have been emulating her classic, elegant style. Fashion jewelry leader CAROLEE quickly named its popular version of the earring “The Kate” -- and at $32 it’s within reach of elegant brides in every price range. “Throughout 2011, brides from Kate Middleton to Hollywood celebrities chose very classic styling for their jewelry,” said Jill Maier, Vice President of Design at CAROLEE. “We’re with them on that level, and we have an extensive collection of beautiful designer crystal and pearl bridal jewelry to suit the tastes of today’s discerning brides.” Ms. Maier has these tips for brides who want to look royal -- British or American style: - Choose crystal and pearl styles that are distinctive yet not overwhelming in scale - Balance the proportions of your earrings and necklace. If your earrings and necklace “match,” keep them close

in size with each other. Or if you choose major chandelier earrings, scale down your necklace or don’t wear one and make the wrist a focal point. - Bracelets are an important bridal accessory, and they look great worn in multiples -- stacks of crystal bangles, mixes of decorative floral pearl and crystal links, or a combination of bangles and links. To find a full range of elegant and affordable bridal jewelry, go to CAROLEE.com. Use code Metro12 and receive 20 percent off your purchase.

Once again, Nassau BOCES will honor the most influential people and organizations for public education in Nassau County. This year — in addition to saluting outstanding community and business leaders, nonprofit executives and volunteers — the program celebrates partners in five new award categories; Nassau BOCES employees, organizations, school board members, students and teachers. Honorees will receive their awards at the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation’s Education Partner Awards Gala on March 21st. The Education Partner Award recognizes those individuals or organizations that have made a substantial impact on public education in Nassau County. A strategic education partner with local school districts since 1967, Nassau BOCES created this program to pay tribute to those who share its commitment to enabling students of all ages and abilities to achieve their maximum

hosted by Louise Cella Caruso. *** American Chamber Ensemble Sunday, February 24th, at 2 p.m. Enjoy a varied program from the American Songbook, light classics, jazz and blues. *** The library is located at 40 Harbor Lane (516.799.0770) or 523 Central Avenue (516.798.4607).

Hockey Winter Classic The Town of Oyster Bay, in conjunction with Long Island Blues Special Hockey, will host a Hockey Winter Classic for physically and developmentally challenged hockey players on Saturday, February 2nd, according to Town Supervisor John Venditto. The event will be held from 3:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage. It is open to all Town residents and admission is Free. “These games will showcase some talented players, who, despite their challenges, play a very competitive game,” Supervisor Venditto said. “It’s inspirational to see them overcome their obstacles by focusing on their abilities, not their disabilities.” Over 50 American Special Hockey Programs have been established in over 30 cities in the United States. “The goal of Special Hockey is to give people with physical and developmental disabilities the chance to play the sport of Ice Hockey in an environment which is adapted to the level of ability which the athletes are able to participate.” said Michael Russo of the Long Island Blues Special Hockey. “We are honored to help facilitate this

unique program, which is all about the enrichment of these special athletes.” In addition to physical hockey skills, the program emphasizes the development of desirable individual characteristics such as dependability, selfreliance, concentration, willingness to share and personal accountability. “The game of hockey is used by Special Hockey to develop within each player the characteristics that will help the player to be more successful both inside and outside a hockey environment,” Supervisor Venditto said. “That is the true benefit of sports. It teaches lessons that translate well in the game of life.” Supervisor Venditto said he and his colleagues in Town government are honored to host this Winter Classic and, at the same time, show off the Town’s state-of-theart ice skating center in Bethpage. “This facility is home to many hockey and skating organizations,” Supervisor Venditto said. “It has hosted many significant community games and events. This Winter Classic ranks high on the list of importance because of what it means to the participants and their families.” Playing before a crowd of enthusiastic people will only heighten

the experience for the players. “I expect many residents will appreciate the opportunity to see these outstanding special athletes compete and I hope our residents come out in large numbers to support them,” Supervisor Venditto said. “They serve as testament to what can be achieved through caring coaching, perseverance and determination.” Supervisor Venditto said for more information about the games and other programs at the rink, residents can visit the Town’s website at www. oysterbaytown.com or call the Town of Oyster Bay Parks Department at 516.797.4125.”

A 27-year tradition of granting wishes to ailing children could not be shaken by the impact of Superstorm Sandy. Students and staff at Raymond J. Lockhart Elementary School once again pooled their resources and raised $3,400 for the Make-AWish Foundation. The effort is the longestrunning school fundraiser for the organization, a distinction the Lockhart community proudly upholds even in the face of adversity. This year’s donation will enable a three-year-old girl who suffers from neoplasms the opportunity to visit Walt Disney World resort with her family and meet her favorite Disney princesses at Cinderella’s Castle. “We’ve been in this together for many years,”

said Patricia Clemency, regional CEO of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. “A lot of families faced challenging times, but the fact that you came through this year speaks to the strength and commitment of the families here.” Members of the Student Council presented a large cardboard check to Clemency following the school’s joyous holiday concert before students, staff and central administrators. Clemency attends every year to give the school a plaque and thank students for making a wish come true. Visibly moved by the generosity of the Lockhart School community, Principal Stephen Scarallo said, “Considering the tough climate, people opened their hearts and wallets to make a difference

in a child’s life. This year’s outcome underscores the strength of this tradition in our school and teaches our children the best possible virtues — resilience, a strong sense of community and an awareness of how they can make a difference in the lives of others.” In the fall, students from kindergarten through sixth grade raised money by collecting pledges from family and friends based on the number of laps they could walk or run around the school’s athletic field. The walk-athon, organized by sixthgrade teacher Donald Breshnihan, attracted parents, students and siblings who spent family time together in support the school’s top fundraiser of the year.

MODEL TRAIN SHOW - Oyster Bay officials recently attended the Hurricane Relief Model Train Show held at the Town of Oyster Bay’s William P. Bennett Hicksville Community Center, and coordinated by Trainville Hobby Depot. The train show ultimately raised more than $2,800 in funds for the American Red Cross for relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. The event, which drew more than 600 people, proved to be an enjoyable day for model train enthusiasts and enabled many caring residents to join together to help those in need.

being listed on the Town’s website should write a letter, on official stationery, listing the name of the civic or chamber; the president; a mailing address; a contact person, if different from the president; the phone number; and, if the organization has a Web site, the Web address. The letter should be addressed to: Supervisor John Venditto, Town Hall East, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, NY 11771. He asked that civics and chambers already listed on the website check their information and submit any updates. “The Town’s goal is to have its website serve as a valuable resource to our residents by providing an on-line information hub that offers a wide range of information and news about our Town, as well as issues and events,” Councilman Macagnone said. “We know from the volume of e-mail, phone calls and comments we receive that many people make a point of visiting our Web site on a regular basis. By adding civic associations and Chambers of Commerce, the Town is providing two important

links for residents to their communities.” The Councilman invited residents who have not visited the Town’s website to do so. “There is a wealth of information on our website,” Councilman Macagnone stated. “Along with the latest news releases, copies of Town brochures that can be printed, permit and license applications, a history of the Town, and biographical information on Town officials, the site contains a description of the various departments, programs and services, and lists of meeting dates for the Town Board, Zoning Board of Appeals, the Planning Advisory Board and the Landmarks Preservation Commission, as well as the Town Code. Agendas for Town Board meetings and Zoning Board of Appeals meetings are posted regularly. The Town also posts closings and other important information during inclement weather. Additionally, you’ll find handy links to other useful websites. It’s a great way to stay informed about your Town government.”

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone reminds all civic organizations and Chambers of Commerce in the Town that they are welcome to be listed on, and linked to, the Town’s website, www. oysterbaytown.com. “The Town is always looking for ways to make the Town’s website as informative and convenient as possible for residents,” Councilman Macagnone stated. “By listing civic organizations and Chambers of Commerce, residents in our communities have a handy resource for contacting the organizations that represent them. It also gives the organizations more exposure and an opportunity to expand their membership. Many civics and chambers already participate. Just go to our Web site, www. oysterbaytown.com, scroll down the directory on the left side of the homepage and click on ‘Community Resources-Helpful Links’ to see the list.” The Councilman went on to say that civic associations and Chambers of Commerce interested in
