Spring Fever By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Spring has sprung.

That’s it. I’ve decided. One sunny day amid a week of snow and sleet and rain, and it’s official. Enough of this winter wonderland nonsense.

Funny, since we have really only had one substantial snowstorm over the course of the last three or so winters; but the one was… well, quite a storm, shall we say. And just like that, all the relatively pleasant winters of the past few years have been forgotten – wiped out from the collective memory.

Isn’t that always the way?

One season gives way to the

next – and we, as a society, go from complaining about the cold, to whining about the spring rain, to being exhausted by the oppressive heat…and then, oh no, here comes that autumn chill again! One endless cycle of wishing for something other than what we have, only to promptly wish it away as soon as it’s within our grasp.

We are a flaky bunch, aren’t we?

And to think other societies would give anything to live in a temperate climate such as ours, complete with four seasons – and the occasional natural disaster of course.

The Town of Oyster Bay is participating in a 2013 Soldier Collection Drive in an effort to gather needed supplies to be sent to the men and women serving around the globe and is asking residents to help support the drive, according to Town Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone, who noted that this is the sixth year the Town is participating in this collection drive.

“Last year, Town residents, with the assistance of the CSEA, donated more than 2,000 pounds of much-needed supplies,” Councilman Macagnone stated. “This year, with residents’ support, we hope to surpass that amount.”

Anyone interested in donating to the collection drive may drop off items at Town Hall North in Oyster Bay; Department of Public Works (CSEA entrance) in Syosset; Town Hall South in Massapequa;

“An independent, notfor-profit health agency, ucpn, has endeavored to improve the quality of life for people with cerebral palsy and others with severe disabilities and multiple service needs,” explained Supervisor Venditto. “The organization, which was founded in 1948, also seeks to prevent cerebral palsy and minimize its effects.”

Supervisor Venditto said that, as in past years, the organizers anticipate many hardy individuals from the community taking the plunge to raise funds for ucpn. Furthermore, he stressed that the event needs additional corporate sponsorship, as well as support from community groups, schools and civic and charitable organizations.

“I hope many Town of Oyster Bay residents will come out to Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park to show their support,” Supervisor Venditto said.

“You will have fun and also help an important cause.”

There is no need to worry, however, because these Polar Bears are about as friendly as they come. Polar Bears are what they call the hearty and caring people who will take part in the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County, Inc. (ucpn) 9th Annual Polar Bear Plunge benefit fundraiser. The festivities for this much anticipated event will kick off at 1:00 p.m. with the polar bears taking the plunge at 2:00 p.m.

“The Polar Bear Swim is a unique and most worthwhile charity event, and I’m pleased to, again, lend the support of the Town to help ensure its success,” said Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto, who has served as an Honorary Co-Chairman for the event since its inception. “The program features brave souls taking the plunge into Oyster Bay Harbor to raise money for ucpn and its many outstanding programs and services. I invite everyone to participate and have fun.”

Blood Drive Set

Winter is traditionally a season when blood donations decrease while hospital and patient needs remain the same. Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Muscarella and Town Supervisor John Venditto urge residents to participate in the Town’s Semi-Annual Blood Drive scheduled for Thursday, March 7th.

“Approximately every two seconds, someone needs blood,” Supervisor Venditto stated. “That translates into 39,000 units of blood being used every day in hospitals and emergency treatment facilities across the country for patients with cancer and other diseases, for organ transplant recipients, for general surgery patients, for accident victims, for premature babies, to name a few. An estimated four million Americans would die each year without it, which is why volunteer blood donors are always needed.”

“Blood banks need to be prepared 365 days a year,” Councilman Muscarella said. “That is why people should always donate whenever they can. Donating is quick and easy and is an entirely safe procedure.

All materials used during the process are sterile, disposable and used only once…by you. There is no danger of contracting any disease, including

AIDS. The pint of blood you donate will never be missed by your body, which manufactures an equivalent amount in 24 hours. When broken down into component parts, one single pint of blood can be used to heal and help the bodies of three different people.”

Councilman Muscarella noted that the success of the Blood Drive has twice earned the Town of Oyster Bay the prestigious New York Blood Center’s “Silver Award,” recognizing outstanding employee participation.

“It’s something of which we’re all proud,” the Councilman commented.

“As our program continues to grow, perhaps one day we will be the recipient of a gold award.”

Councilman Muscarella went on to say that the locations for the blood drives are: Town Hall South Conference Room, 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa (9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.); Town Hall North at the Blood Mobile, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay (9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) and the Department of Public Works War Room (Highway), 150 Miller Place (11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.).

To qualify as a blood donor, a person must between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s

note dated within one year of donation), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days.

The Councilman noted that all blood types are needed, but O negative blood types are universal and especially needed at this time of need. He added that the Town will provide refreshments for everyone who donates. All donors will also be eligible for a drawing for a gift card from Home Depot or Lowes. The cards are courtesy of Carpenters Union Local 290 of Long Island, New York.

“Please help us make this blood drive a huge success,” Supervisor Venditto stated. “If you are not able to give, perhaps you know someone who can. Remember, every pint is precious.”

Councilman Muscarella added that to make an appointment to donate, or for additional information contact Nancy Haarstick at 516.624.6304. “And remember,” he said, “there are many people out there hoping you are the type to give blood.

More importantly, you may also be the ‘right type’ for a patient waiting for the gift of life.”
