Of Keynotes & Conquering Fears

When I was first asked to deliver the keynote for the LIU Post Media Arts Best Of High School Journalism Awards, all those nerves came flooding back. Memories of my valedictory address in high school, complete with my Guidance Counselor asking, “Um, Jamie? Do you need gum or a mint or something? You look like you’re going to be sick…” just prior to my getting ready to go on stage seemed fresh. But that was almost thirteen years ago. A lot has changed. People grow. They overcome their fears. Those once-impossible tasks seem suddenly attainable. In fact, that was the overall reaction of the high school students to my keynote address – Wow, we can do this too. She was just like us, and look what she’s achieved… The dream can become a reality. That, I think, was the greatest compliment anyone could hope to receive. If, by getting over my fear of public speaking and being able to convey my message, I was able to influence even one high school student to pursue his/her dream of becoming a journalist… well, that’s the biggest reward of all.

Giant sigh of relief. I did it. I delivered a 20 minute (well, more like 10-minute) keynote address in front of roughly 100 high school journalism students and former professors. And I survived. What’s the big deal, you ask? Given that my profession consists mainly of the written word, the spoken word has always presented a bit of a problem for me. It’s not so much a weak point as a giant source of anxiety. Give me something to read, and I’m probably going to race through it and a relatively low volume, barely glancing up. All words will be pronounced correctly, with proper inflection and expression, but it will be over before you know it – and there had better be a powerful microphone handy. Ask me to ad lib and simply speak off the top of my head in front of a group of people – be it 3 or 3,000 – and, well, let’s just say most people know not to even ask. Granted, I have gotten much better at this. Back in high school, I used to dread the words “Oral
Presentation” on any syllabus, and would work myself up into a frenzy of sorts in the days and hours leading up to said presentation. Usually, it came off fairly well; but there were definitely a handful of occasions when my ill-advised attempts to toss the notecards and “wing it” went awry. Suddenly, I would lose all track of what I was saying, where I was going with my “point” (more like tangent) and how on earth to get back on track. Of course, seeing dozens of your fellow classmates staring blankly back at you never helped the situation either. Being a Journalism major in college, I’m sure you can all imagine how thrilled I was to learn that public speaking would be a large part of the curriculum. There was even an entire Oral Communication course I was required to take…what luck! All joking aside, I did learn to slow it down a bit, enunciate, project, make eye contact (well, occasionally anyway) and – dare I say it – even to ad lib a bit from time to time. Not too much. Just enough.

Recognizing that the health effects of Hurricane Sandy are still being felt by those living in stormravaged areas such as Long Beach and Lindenhurst, Long Island, and Broad Channel, Queens, the North Shore-LIJ Health System announced today that its mobile medical van will continue visiting those communities through August, thanks to a $350,000 grant from the Robin Hood Relief Fund. “We are proud to continue the work of our mobile medical van with the generous support of the Robin Hood Foundation, said Ira Nash, MD, medical director of the North Shore-LIJ Medical Group, which has been coordinating the health system’s mobile van efforts, called Project Coastal Care, since last November. “We have already touched the lives of hundreds of people in the areas stricken by Hurricane Sandy, and look forward to being able to help provide basic medical services as these communities rebuild.” The North ShoreLIJ medical mobile van provides free medical evaluations by North Shore - LIJ doctors and nurses, primary and urgent care services, blood pressure checks, diabetes evaluation, prescription refills, flu shots (while available) and tetanus shots. Staff is also available
to respond to medical questions and concerns of local residents, and offer medical advice. Beginning Monday, February 25th, and every Monday for the next six months, the medical van will be in Lindenhurst, at Shore Park from 12 to 6 p.m. On Tuesdays, it will be stationed in Long Beach at 225 W. Park Avenue from 12 to 3 p.m. and on National Blvd from 3 to 6 p.m. On Wednesdays, the van will be in Broad Channel in Queens, at the American Legion from 12 to 6 p.m. On Thursdays, the van will be in Long Beach at 175 W. The popularity of yogurt is on the rise. According to Innoval Market Insights, launches of Greek yogurt products have increased by 29 percent in the United States. People are drawn to the health benefits of yogurt, but there are lesserknown benefits to yogurt as well. Yogurt’s creamy texture is a byproduct of the lactic acid present when milk ferments. According to the yogurt company Dannon(R), between 20 and 30 percent of milk’s lactose is converted to lactic acid during the fermentation process. One of the advantages to eating yogurt concerns digestion. The naturally occurring bacteria present in yogurt helps promote a healthy environment in the stomach and digestive system, enabling the body to more ably break down food. Due to the thickness of yogurt, it takes longer to move through the digestive system. This, in turn, helps the body break down lactose more efficiently. As a result, people who have lactose intolerance may be more comfortable eating yogurt than other dairy products. The proteins in yogurt are complete and fully absorbed by the body. These proteins also contain essential amino acids that the body cannot produce on its own. Greek-style yogurts contain more protein than other varieties, and yogurt may have anywhere from 7 percent to 50 percent of a person’s recommended daily intake of protein. This will help a person to feel fuller, longer. Those who enjoy yogurt on a daily basis can invest in the larger quarts of yogurt sold at many stores, which will produce less waste than the singleserve containers. Furthermore, individuals should recycle their yogurt containers. The Activia Yogurt Brigade encourages consumers to save empty Activia yogurt containers to help prevent hundreds of thousands of plastic containers from going into landfills. Rather, the containers are recycled into trash containers, benches and other items to be reused.

Healthy ways to speed up your metabolism Dieters are often aware of metabolism and its effect on an individual’s weight. Metabolism is a process that serves a host of important functions, including converting food and drink into energy and using energy to construct certain components of cells. For the perpetual dieter, metabolism can be a natural-born enemy, a process that simply isn’t fast enough for dieters to lose weight. Even more frustrating, a person’s metabolism can hinge on genetics and gender. People may inherit a speedy or slow metabolism. Gender plays a large role considering men have a tendency to burn more calories than women, even while resting. Those who inherited a speedy metabolism are often the people who can seemingly eat whatever they choose without gaining a pound. But gaining a faster metabolism isn’t just for men or those who inherited a speedier metabolism at birth. In fact, there are several healthy ways to speed up metabolism. * Pack on some muscle. People with more muscle tend to have a higher resting metabolic rate. That’s because muscle burns more calories than fat. According to the American Council on Exercise, each pound of fat burns just two calories per day, while various estimates suggest each pound of muscle burns between 35 to 50 calories per day. Those figures might seem insignificant, but they add up over time and someone with significant muscle can burn considerably more calories than someone without. Employ resistance training to build muscle, as such training activates muscles all over the body, increasing your daily metabolic rate as a result. * Emphasize intensity. Daily exercise is great, but high-intensity daily exercise will prove more effective at speeding up your metabolism. Low- or moderateintensity workouts don’t pack the same punch as high-intensity workouts, which produce a longer
increase in resting metabolic rate. Sign up for a Zumba(R) or spin class at your gym, both of which are the kind of high-intensity cardiovascular workout that can speed up your metabolism. * Embrace grazing. Grazing is a dietary philosophy in which individuals eat five to six smaller meals every
Lifting weights and staying hydrated are two ways to speed up your metabolism. three to four hours instead of three large meals each day. Eating this way helps keep your metabolism going, and the result is you will burn more calories
Did you know? A new study in the journal Neurology suggests that working out is the most effective way to protect the brain from Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers studied roughly 700 study participants from Scotland, all of whom were born in 1936. Each participant reported their levels of leisure and physical activity at age 70, rating their physical activity on a scale from moving only to perform household chores to participating in heavy exercise or competitive sport several times per week. Participants were
throughout the day than you would if you ate a more traditional diet. Of course, what you eat when grazing is important, too. Choose low-fat, high-nutrient foods, and snack on fruits and vegetables instead of more popular snacks like potato chips. Grazing on unhealthy foods won’t lead to weight loss and may even cause weight gain. * Eat more protein. Protein can serve many purposes for people trying to lose weight. Protein has a tendency to make you feel full when you eat it, reducing the likelihood that you will overeat. In addition, the body burns more calories when digesting protein than it does while digesting fats or carbohydrates. Turkey, low-fat dairy products, fish, nuts and beans are great sources of protein, which should not be all you eat but can be used as a periodic replacement for other foods that may slow down your metabolism. * Stay hydrated. Your metabolism will likely slow down if you allow yourself to get dehydrated. When the body does not have enough water, several of its functions, including its ability to burn calories, slow down. Muscles are roughly 70 percent water, so if they are not fully hydrated they cannot generate energy, affecting your metabolism. In addition, the body is not as effective at using fat as fuel when it is dehydrated, further slowing your metabolism. Staying hydrated is as easy as drinking enough water throughout the day. How much water an individual needs to stay hydrated is open to debate among medical professionals, but one study found that adults who drink eight or more glasses of water per day burned more calories than those who drank four glasses of water per day. Many people feel they were either gifted at birth with a fast metabolism or doomed from the start with a slow metabolism. But an individual’s metabolism is not set in stone, and there are a host of healthy ways men and women can speed up their metabolism.
also asked to rate how often they engaged in social or intellectual activities. At age 73, participants received an MRI to measure certain biomarkers in their brains. Those who participated in more physical activity showed less brain shrinkage and fewer white matter lesions, both of which can be signs of Alzheimer’s disease. And while social and intellectual activities can be beneficial in preventing Alzheimer’s disease, the study found that social and intellectual engagement weren’t as helpful to the brain as physical exercise. The types of physical exercise most beneficial to the brain are still being studied, though information presented at the 2012 Alzheimer’s Association’s International Conference suggested that strength training is perhaps the most effective form of exercise.

Make your favorite recipes healthier A healthy diet plays a significant role in a person’s overall health. Without a healthy diet, men and women are more susceptible to disease and other potentially harmful ailments. But when many people think of a healthy diet, a lack of flavor is often one of the first things to come to mind. That’s a common misconception, as a diet that’s healthy and full of nutrients can simultaneously be flavorful. In fact, it’s easy to enjoy many of your favorite dishes in a way that makes them much healthier. Oftentimes, a few minor alterations to a recipe is all it takes to turn the dish from high-risk to healthy. * Trim the fat. No one wants to eat fat, but fat isn’t entirely bad for you. Fat can help your body absorb vitamins A, D, E and K, and replacing fat with something like carbohydrates decreases how much these valuable vitamins are absorbed. In addition, dietary fat releases chemicals in the brain that make you feel full, reducing the likelihood that you will overeat. Those are just a few of the benefits of dietary fat, which is an essential element of a healthy diet. But overconsumption of dietary fat can be dangerous, and many people simply need to trim some fat from their diets. One way to do that is to reduce how much butter, shortening or oil you use when cooking. For some recipes, you may be able to cut suggested portions of such ingredients by half without replacing them; however, for others, especially those for baked goods, these items may have to be replaced. In the case of the latter, find a suggested alternative to high-fat items, and only use half of the high-fat item listed in the original recipe. Chances are you won’t taste the difference, but your body will be better for it. * Substitute healthier fare. Substituting items is another way to turn a favorite dish into a healthier dish without altering the flavor dramatically, if at all. For example, instead of cooking with enriched pasta, purchase whole-wheat or whole-grain pastas, which are higher in fiber and lower in calories. If a recipe calls for using milk, choose fat-free milk instead of whole milk. Doing so reduces your fat intake by nearly 8 grams per cup. Recipes can even be made healthier by simply cutting back on the main dish and adding more vegetables. Instead of using the recommended amount of meat or chicken, scale back and make up for it with additional vegetables, which reduces your caloric and fat intake while adding more vitamins and minerals to your diet.

* Change your methods. Certain cooking techniques are healthier than others. Frying foods or cooking with fat, oil or salt is not the healthiest way to prepare a meal. Some of your favorite dishes that call for frying or cooking in oil can be just as flavorful if you opt for healthier methods like braising, broiling, grilling, or steaming. When recipes call for basting foods in oil or drippings, forgo these unhealthy options and baste foods in vegetable juice or fat-free broth instead. What you use to cook can also be healthy or unhealthy. Nonstick cookware won’t require you to use oil or butter to keep foods from sticking to the pan. This reduces the amount of fat and calories you will consume, and you likely won’t notice a difference with regards to flavor. Men and women who enjoy food and cooking their own meals can take several Using nonstick cookware when preparing your favorite meals can reduce steps to make those meals healthier without sacrificing flavor. reliance on oil or butter, cutting fat and calories from your diet.

Stock your pantry with these healthy staples
When hunger pangs arrive and you head to the kitchen to prepare a meal or a snack, it helps to have healthy foods on hand so that you can fill up without filling out your clothes. Sugary or fattening foods may be popular snacks, but consuming too many of these items can cause health implications, including weight gain, that could last for years. Although health experts tout certain “super foods” that are essential for the body, there are run-of-the-mill foods that are far less glamorous but pack their own healthy punch and are much more readily available. When making your next shopping list, be sure to add these items. * Rice: Starchy rice is a versatile food that can accompany many meals. Whether served as a side dish or on its own or with some broth in a soup, rice can help satisfy hunger and keep the stomach feeling full. Brown rice is a healthier option than processed white rice. Rice is also gentle on the stomach for people who need to consume bland diets due to any gastrointestinal ailments. Another advantage to rice is that it stores well and will not go bad, so you can stock up. * Low-fat yogurt: Yogurt can be enjoyed as a snack any time of the day. Rich in calcium and healthy probiotics, yogurt can even replace certain ingredients in recipes, including creams and sour cream. As a dessert, yogurt is a better option than more fattening puddings or ice cream. Thicker varieties of yogurt can help you feel fuller, longer.
* Unsalted nuts: An excellent protein-rich snack, nuts can be the go-to food when you need a nutritional pickme-up. Although they tend to be high in fat, much of the fat content is unsaturated fat that is rich in omega acids necessary for cardiovascular and neurological health. Nuts can be sprinkled on salads or served with cheeses to make meals more satisfying. * Canned or dried fruits: Fruits that are packed in natural fruit juices are just as healthy as fresh produce. However, they can be stored for longer periods of time without spoiling. Many people do not consume the recommended servings of fruit, and having canned or individually packaged fruit cups available makes it easy to include fruit in your diet. Fruits are full of required vitamins and are a natural fiber source to keep digestion in check. Dried fruits can be added to nuts to make a healthy trail mix. Raisins, for example, are a great source of iron, which helps the blood transport oxygen. * Beans and legumes: These foods are high in protein as well as fiber, generally in a low-calorie package. Beans and legumes can replace meats as a protein source in many meals when the goal is to reduce caloric and fat intake. Beans can be used to thicken sauces or make foods more hearty, helping to stretch them further. * Vegetables: Whether fresh or frozen, vegetables are a must-have staple. Vegetables are ripe with vitamins and minerals, and pack a lot of punch with very low
calories and fat. People need not worry about filling up on vegetables, and they’re one of the snacks that can be eaten in abundance without worry of racking up a lot of calories. Aim to have half of your plate filled with vegetables at every meal, which will keep you full. * Lean protein sources: Fish, poultry and lean cuts of meat are often the basis for meals. They can be kept and enjoyed in moderation. Rich cuts of pork and beef may be flavorful but are high in saturated fats. * Lemons or lemon juice: Rather than seasoning foods with salt and butter, lemon juice is a tasty flavoring that lends itself well to many types of foods. Lemons and limes contain limonene, furocoumarins and vitamin C, all of which help reduce your risk of cancer. * Cranberry juice: In addition to being an antioxidant, 100 percent cranberry juice helps fight bladder infections by preventing harmful bacteria from growing. The juice can be consumed on its own or diluted to add a splash of flavor to water. * Figs: Many people underestimate the nutritional value of figs. Figs can be eaten fresh off of the tree. Think about adding mashed figs to batters for healthier breads or even desserts. A good source of potassium and fiber, figs also contain vitamin B6, which produces mood-boosting serotonin, lowering cholesterol and preventing water retention. There are many healthy and versatile foods that can be stored in the pantry without spoiling. They make for quick snacks and help keep you feeling fuller, longer.

Creative Expressions When I Can’t Sleep... The Gallery
Featuring Poetry And Photos Submitted By Our Readers!
By: Robert L. Macchia, West Babylon Thoughts racing through my mind, Sometimes keep me awake at night, So I get dressed in the wee hours, And go for a walk carrying a flashlight…
Send Us Your Best Pics To Be Featured
The dark streets can be dangerous, But exercise is good for the body and soul, There is not much activity because of the time, Exercise is invigorating especially when it is cold… My wife tells me how dangerous it can be, So I try to avoid walking in the wee hours, But when I can’t sleep the exercise is great, It gives me strength and power… A body that is inactive is not good for the mind and soul, As we age we must remain active and not become lazy, The aches and pains always disappear when I exercise, My mind avoids “oldtimers” and becomes sharp and not hazy…
Rebirth By: Andrew Kessler, Massapequa We refuse to love others See our flaws within them In the mirror these same traits we admire Shatter the reflection Sweep away the broken deception In front of you a blank canvas Take a brush, imagine your reborn soul With each stroke, create the life you wish to live Embrace this new world Gone the scars of yesteryear Welcome to paradise naive virgin How does it feel to truly live and love again?

Americans love their electronics, smart phones, tablet computers, digital cameras, HDTV’s, e-book readers, MP3 players, and hearing aids (oops, those words ‘hearing aids’ are old, lets re-name them). That’s right – new, sleek, state-of-the-art, life-altering hearing instruments (that’s better). As contoured and futuristic as the most highly styled electronic device – or so discreet that they are virtually invisible – today’s hearing instruments are the high-tech “anti-aging” tool that can help keep lifelong Gen-Xers and baby boomers socially, cognitively and physically active. At its best, technology offers solutions, enriches life, and makes us more efficient. Today’s modern hearing instruments do all three. For more than 34 million Americans hearing loss is part of life. Most frequently, it results from repeat exposure to loud noises – at concerts, nightclubs, sporting events, crowded restaurants, loud workplaces and so on. In many ways, hearing loss is the unintended by-product of life fully lived—that is, before we knew better about how to protect our hearing in such noisy environments. But when ignored and left unaddressed, hearing loss robs from life. It isolates, it debilitates, and it diminishes quality of life and it even takes a toll on financial well being, by cutting into earnings potential. Perhaps, most notable, unaddressed hearing loss creates barriers and unnecessarily strains even the best of relationships. But listen up now! It doesn’t have to, and it shouldn’t. The overwhelming majority of people with hearing loss can benefit from hearing instruments. Eight out of ten
hearing instrument users say they are satisfied with the changes that have occurred in their lives, specifically, due to their hearing instruments – from how they feel about themselves to the positive effects hearing instruments have on their social and work lives. High-performance technology and style have merged with durability and ease-of-use when it comes to today’s hearing instruments. The options are so varied, in fact, that there is an attractive solution for just about anyone; today’s high-tech hearing aids can be discreet or as visible as you like. Top designer’s offer styles that appeal to the fashion conscious, the trendsetter, partygoer, the intellectual, or sports enthusiast. Now designer styles and colors can make the average guy who is tired of arguing with his wife and kids about the volume on the TV feel more comfortable and confident wearing hearing instruments. Simply put, today’s hearing instruments transcend the old-world notion about hiding a condition as common as hearing loss. Whether they sit discreetly unnoticeable inside your ear canal, or wrap aesthetically around the contour of your outer ear like the latest fashion accessory, today’s high-performance hearing instruments selectively amplify life. They do unabashedly send the message: “I’m too young and full of life to stop doing the things I love best.” If you think you or someone you care about is struggling with unaddressed hearing loss ask yourself, or them, these questions:
• Do you seem to have trouble hearing on the telephone? • Is it more difficult for you to follow conversations when two or more people are talking at the same time? • Do you keep turning up the TV or radio? • Do you sometimes miss a telephone ring or doorbell? • Do you seem more irritated or tired at big family or social gatherings? If the answer to some or all of these questions is yes, it’s time to take that first step toward regaining the reins on life. Make an appointment with a hearing health professional, take a hearing test, and take charge of your hearing loss. So go ahead, be an innovator, disrupt your life for the better, and get that one consumer electronic that’s sure to amplify your life. Get a hearing instrument! Then hear how dynamic technology and the world around you… can be. Call 1.800.698.5200 and ask for a free booklet on Hearing Loss and how Hearing Instruments may be your answer. You can also log onto the Better Hearing Institutes website at www.betterhearing.org.
