Back To Basics By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The more I drive, the more I realize how many truly incompetent motorists there are out there. Let’s start with the basics. If you come out to find snow accumulated on the roof of your car, CLEAN IT OFF. Those of us who have the misfortune of driving behind you would greatly appreciate it. I know you think you’re saving time, but honestly, they make rear windows transparent for a reason…you know, just in case you want to take a quick peek back there every now and then. Once on the road, let’s review a few pointers… Shoulders of the road were made for the purpose of easing into and out of traffic while merging. Trust me, it’s a much better alternative than

practically standing on your brakes while in the right traffic lane as you suddenly realize your exit is approaching – oh, in 3 feet or so. Same goes for merging onto a major highway or parkway. Do not assume that the lane is clear for you to simply sail right through at 60 mph. There are occasionally, you know, other vehicles already inhabiting that space. Then there are those scenarios that are simply so bizarre, they are beyond words. A few weeks ago, I was stopped at a light on the Service Road of the LIE. As I waited in the left hand turning lane, a truck opposite me in the right hand lane, I noticed a car approach in the middle lane, “driven” by a man staring intently at the map spread across his steering wheel. Suddenly, he apparently

decided that he needed to be somewhere else, and proceeded to back up on the Service Road and cut his wheel, angling his car toward this aforementioned truck in the right lane…all the while, never shifting his gaze from the map. With a mix of horror and amusement, I watched the scene unfold. I glanced at the truck driver, to see him absolutely hysterical with laughter, shaking his head in amazement. The light turned green at that point, spurring me to get out of there before witnessing Act II of this particular play. No telling what the next move might have been! Let’s all focus people. And not on our maps, please. The road. Only the road. And for goodness sake, invest in a snowbrush.

In 2009, Greschner was ranked No. 12 on the all-time list of New York Rangers in the book 100 Ranger Greats. “The Town of Oyster Bay’s Youth Ice Hockey Program is one of the finest in the nation and Family Skate Night recognizes everyone who helps support it,” Councilman Coschignano said. “In addition, our status as a premier partner with the New York Rangers allows us to add prestige to the event by having a special appearance from Ranger’s alumni like Ron Greschner. We Care Blankets

A group of Prime Timers from St. Luke’s Lutheran Church responded to a request for knitted or crocheted blankets for children hospitalized for cancer treatment. The colorful blankets provided warmth, comfort and cheer to the children. In the past year, St. Luke’s Women made over 100 blankets for the children. We Care Blankets was

started by Tamara Baker of Massapequa. While visiting a hospital a number of years ago, she saw children who were receiving treatments for cancer. They looked cold and in need of cheering up. Ms. Baker decided that colorful blankets would give the children warmth and cheer. And so We Care Blankets was started. Ms. Baker picks up the

blankets and then has volunteers wrap them as gifts. Volunteers deliver the blankets to hospitals on Long Island, New York City and as far away as Connecticut, Boston and Pennsylvania. In a letter to the Prime Timers, Ms. Baker stated, “Your assistance is a wonderful gesture which is truly appreciated.

My babies are growing up What they used to love me doing Is just embarrassing now My little boy walks down the hall From a distance, all I see is his back Then suddenly, he turns to see if I’m still there And gives me a wave My heart melts ‘Cause his big sisters They don’t look back anymore She doesn’t look back I guess it’s okay It means she’s growing up In every sense of the way Sometimes those moments get lost Day to day But when my little guy looked back It reminded me of so many yesterdays I drop her off to her hourly job She tells me not to stop in front It’s too embarrassing Getting a lift from my mom She scurries in through the door She doesn’t look back anymore My baby is getting ready to dance Her tutu and make-up on I used to walk her backstage And she’d glance and I’d give her a wink You’re going to do great Don’t be scared Just look straight ahead Don’t look at the floor Now, she doesn’t look back anymore They say you have to let go Cut those apron strings

No one told me the pain that would bring ‘Cause she doesn’t look back anymore She packed her bags And we flew and flew A thousand miles later We were at her new school I tried to be strong And decorated her dorm I knew soon It wouldn’t be long To say our goodbyes I didn’t want to ruin her excitement Being on her own for the first time I put on my shades To hide my tears I could feel her stare As I drove away The pain is too great Nothing will be the same as before I’ve had to learn To not look back anymore Hold on to those moments When their sweet little eyes Search for you in a crowd

One day as I was walking with my cane And time for me to go I glanced up And behind the curtain I could see those big brown eyes She was looking back To make sure I was okay Saying a silent prayer That I’d make it home safe on my way My baby looked back today

condition. “Residents who are rebuilding in-kind will be given a Letter of Authorization, which allows them to begin work immediately,” Supervisor Venditto said. “Accordingly, no fees will be charged.” The Supervisor noted that while the disbursement of federally funded disaster aid or insurance proceeds is not in the Town’s control, Oyster Bay has formulated an expedited process for residents requiring paperwork and guidance in relation to building and restoring their homes. “As has been the case since the immediate aftermath of the storm, the Town of Oyster Bay has been committed to doing everything in its power to help affected homeowners,” Supervisor Venditto stated. “As such, the Town’s Department of Planning and Development has streamlined the process for those homeowners requiring any paperwork necessary to restore their homes.” Residents who have sustained damages valued at more than $10,000 require their plans to be submitted by a licensed engineer, and those with damages over $20,000 require them to be stamped and sealed by a licensed architect. Those who require plumbing and electrical work will need to receive an inspection certificate for any necessary repairs, which must be performed by a licensed professional. No fees will be charged by the Town to residents who wish to raise their homes, and general height restrictions do not apply as the height of homes will be measured from the foundation plate, as established by federal flood plain maps. As such, no fees will be charged for

this process, provided that homes are restored to their pre-existing conditions. This does not apply if residents are seeking to do any additional work to their home, including extensions or expansions. “The Department of Planning and Development has established a hotline for residents who have questions pertaining to home restoration,” Supervisor Venditto said. “Homeowners can call 516.624.6397 for additional information, or visit the Department of Planning and Development.” The Department of Planning and Development is located at 74 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, NY 11771. No appointment is necessary, however appointments are available by calling 516.624.6397. “In the event that a resident was charged fees for any in-kind construction prior to the basic rules being promulgated, they may send a letter to the Commissioner of Planning and Development to request a refund,” Supervisor Venditto stated. “Throughout the duration of this devastating storm and the subsequent cleanup, the Town of Oyster Bay has been deeply and intricately involved in rescue, clean-up, restoration, outreach, and humanitarian aid efforts,” Supervisor Venditto stated. “Our Town highway and sanitation trucks have been a common sight in your community, working diligently and efficiently to gather storm debris and clear roadways. And we continue to be here for you today.” For more information, visit the Town’s website, www.oysterbaytown.com, or call 516.624.6200 or 516.624.6397.

The Town of Oyster Bay has cancelled its annual Tobay Beach Dune Stabilization Project due to the damage sustained at Tobay Beach by Hurricane Sandy, Town Supervisor John Venditto announced. Although this program is being cancelled for its original date of Saturday, March 16th, Supervisor Venditto stressed that the Town intends to hold this long standing, environmentally important volunteer project for residents of all ages, after restoration efforts have been completed at Tobay Beach. “The cancellation of the Dune Stabilization project represents an unfortunate ramification of this unprecedented storm, because this event provides an excellent opportunity for community groups and volunteers to lend a hand in an important preservation effort,” Supervisor Venditto said. “Although the effects of Hurricane Sandy have been felt far and wide throughout the Town of Oyster Bay, this is something that we will come back from, and the Town will continue to be intricately involved in clean-up, restoration, and outreach efforts. The Supervisor added that at present, contractors are in the process of rebuilding the dunes that had been in place on Tobay’s ocean side, in order to aid in future beach preservation efforts. This process, along with the rebuilding of the pavilion and decking that had been heavily damaged during Hurricane Sandy, will bring Tobay Beach back to its former glory in time for the summer season.
