Receiver Stefanich reminded residents that they have access to tax bills online with the ability to pay taxes through ACH check payment or credit card. “These services are available through a link on our Town website, www.oysterbaytown.com,” Receiver Stefanich said. “Residents should be aware there is a service fee if they chose to pay taxes on-line. The Town of Oyster Bay receives no portion of the fee.” When calling the Tax Office for information on property taxes, residents are requested to have the school district, section, block and lot numbers of the property in question available. This information is listed on the tax bill and on the property deed.

Receiver Stefanich pointed out that while this Executive Order applies to all school districts, each district has the choice to opt in to this program. To date, two school districts have yet to opt in to this extension: Roslyn School District and North Shore School District, however the Executive Order may be revised and amended to include them at a later date. When paying the tax bill in person, taxpayers are reminded to bring the entire tax bill with their payments. Payments being made by mail should include the second half stub. Residents should NOT write on, fold, staple or otherwise deface the tax stub as it can cause the computer system to reject payment. Please note that the Hicksville Parking Facility Tax Annex will not be open for collection during this extension period. Residents looking to pay in person may do so at Town Halls North (74

Oyster Bay Town Receiver of Taxes James J. Stefanich advises Town of Oyster Bay property owners that the original November 10th deadline to pay the first half of their 2012-2013 school tax bill has been extended, by executive order from New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo, to December 4th. Residents may pay through December 4th without penalty. “Residents throughout the Town of Oyster Bay and beyond have been affected by the devastating events of Hurricane Sandy,” Receiver of Taxes Jim Stefanich said. “These last few weeks have truly been the definition of e x t r a o r d i n a r y circumstances, and so the Governor has taken the appropriate measures to extend the deadline through Executive Order, so as not to penalize those who have been affected by forces beyond their control.”

It’s snowing as I write this and, like many of you, I haven’t had electricity for ten days now. I’m wearing multiple layers of clothing and gloves, and it feels as if I’ll never be able to get warm again. But I need to reach out to you because our friends, our neighbors and our community needs our assistance. The following Town Shelters and Rescues are reaching out for the community’s help...

What we’re trying to organize is a list of people available to help, one family at a time. If you can open your home temporarily to a dog or cat - not an unknown stray; rather, someone’s pet - for a limited period of time, you would be helping a family in their worst hour. Many of these families just have nowhere to take their pets while they get themselves back together. With that in mind, please e-mail me if you are able to assist. If you can take someone’s pet, let me know exactly what your requirements are... Dog or cat? Size? Male or female? Friendly with other pets or kids? How long you can foster? If you can’t take in a pet but can help in some other way (maybe transport?), please let me know. And finally, if you have any ideas on how to make this endeavor work and want to help organize it, please let me know. We will take all the help we can get.

From Bulldog Rescue: Due to the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, many of our volunteers have been left without power, evacuated from their homes and tending to getting their own affairs in order. We are in great need of foster homes in New Jersey, Long Island and surrounding areas. This means that if you genuinely want to help a Bulldog who has no where else to turn, we will cover all approved medical expenses and will provide a MCM Rottweiler Rescue crate if needed. We don’t want to turn away a rescue, and we don’t want to see them end up on the street or in the shelters. We Hempstead Shelter: are taking donations to help with costs of boarding if for some reason Hempstead Animal Shelter is in desperate need of newspaper, towwe can’t find a foster home. We can board as a last resort. els and blankets. We don’t have power, and are running on a generator, which means we don’t have a washing machine/dryer. It is a cold Babylon Town Shelter: 30 degrees most nights. Although we have heat in the kennels, it still I have been asked by the Babylon Town Animal Shelter to try to gets chilly. We NEED people to come in to foster animals - we need assist in the huge influx of pets in need of help. Many of the residents rescues to step up to adopt from the shelter. We have small dogs, of Babylon, as well as other townships on Long Island, have been dis- felines, kittens, adults cats and seniors. Anyone interested in adopting

A portion of the ticket sales goes to each of the participating high school bands, as well as the Newsday Marching Band Grant program that assists Hofstra music students in their studies. By: Jamie Lynn Ryan This holiday season, it seems especially appropriate to reflect on those things we are thankful for, individually and collectively. Considering all that most of us have been through – and continue to go through – over the last month, I believe most of us have found a new appreciation for those things formerly taken for granted. For one, if you are fortunate enough to spend this Thanksgiving holiday with your family, friends and loved ones, consider yourself ahead of the game. Sure, you may have to forgo the traditional turkey dinner at home, but was the holiday ever truly about the food to begin with?

Perhaps, for some. Food, coupled with football and Black Friday shopping, right? Well this year, it is about something else, something far more important to the big picture. Togetherness. Compassion. Charity. That sense of fulfillment that only comes from these qualities… if only it didn’t take natural disasters and national tragedies to bring this sort of behavior out. I suppose the better part of human nature is always there, just below the surface, pushed aside by the daily monotony of life’s obligations. But to see it on display… that’s something the likes of which we don’t witness nearly often enough. This Thanksgiving – and

Christmas, while we’re at it – the emphasis should be on the people we choose to celebrate with. The rest is material – the food, the gifts, the decorations – and can be modified on the fly. But the people… they cannot be replaced. We have all lost a lot over this last month; at the very least, a sense of security and complacency. Maybe this isn’t a bad thing. Perhaps it is a reminder that we should never take things for granted, and should always be moving forward. You simply never know when things will come to a grinding standstill. Let’s all enjoy the moments and the memories this holiday season. Absorb each and every one and savor them. Happy Thanksgiving.

In an effort to heighten awareness, spark conversation and commemorate those who lost their lives to HIV/AIDS, the Massapequa School District will host a public viewing of the AIDS Memorial Quilt on Thursday, November 29th, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Massapequa High School Baldwin Auditorium. The event coincides with World AIDS Day,

December 1st, and is part of the district’s annual HIV/AIDS Awareness Week, November 26th November 30th. During this time, statemandated, ageappropriate lessons will be taught to students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Three quilt panels are being provided by the Names Project Foundation, the custodian of the 54-ton handmade tapestry that

consists of more than 48,000 panels dedicated to more than 94,000 individuals. All community members are encouraged to attend this educational event and support the district’s ongoing efforts to ensure the health and safety of its students.
