Top Cuts Salon held their 4th Annual Cut-AThon on Saturday, October 22nd, in Bethpage. Customers, family and friends gathered for haircuts, food, raffles and a Chinese auction to raise money for Beauty For A Cure, a foundation that benefits local Long Island breast cancer charities. For Christina AmatoSmith, owner of Top Cuts and host of the Cut-AThon, raising money for women with breast cancer is an effort dear to her. Smith was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer in 2008, “I am driven by a calling. I have been given a second chance at life and I need to make a difference,” said Smith. After chemotherapy and numerous surgeries, she was declared cancer free in 2011. Smith is also founder of Beauty For a Cure, a
foundation she established in 2009. 100 percent of their funds (to date, Over $70,000) benefit local breast cancer coalitions that focus on providing services directly to the individuals battling the disease rather than to research. “It’s not that research isn’t important, but the women on Long Island need the help,” explained Smith. Beauty for a Cure donates to organizations like Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition, Lean on Me Coalition, and Long Beach Breast Cancer Coalition that focus on the women themselves. “It keeps them running their life at a norm when they are going through it,” said Smith. During her fight with breast cancer Smith had help from Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition, “This [Cut-A-Thon] is me and my staff’s way to give back.”
This year the Cut- AThon raised 10,000 dollars for Beauty for a Cure. New and regular customers booked the salon full for the day. “It’s the best thing, it’s amazing what they do,” said Barbara Evans, a regular customer at TopCuts. “She’s an amazing individual,” said Christine, Smith’s friend since grammar school who stood beside her during her battle. “She is so inspirational. It’s amazing something unfortunate happened and what she turned it around to be.” In addition to the proceeds from hair services for the day the Cut-A-Thon raffled off donated items from clients, local businesses and other supporters, some of the items valued up to 700 dollars. “I’m really honored by Continued on Page 6

the support I get from the community as well as my family and friends, everyone comes together, it puts meaning behind what you do,” said Smith. Raffles included Disney park passes, a signed Islanders Jersey, and a 500 dollar diamond ring. People beyond the local community also joined the Cut-A-Thon. Jennifer Cherry, a Pennsylvania consultant for the cosmetic company Mary Kay, decided to participate in the Cut-AThon after hearing about it through Facebook. After being diagnosed with breast cancer at the young age of 21, Cherry found Beauty for a Cure’s cause close to the heart. “Cancer awareness is my heart’s desire, that and making women feel beautiful,” said Cherry who sold products at the event and donated 20 percent of the proceeds to
the cause. Smith’s family and friends helped raise money at the event by selling raffle tickets, tshirts and other items. Among them, Smith’s mother, Rose Amato and husband Gerry Smith. “It [the Cut-A-Thon] gets bigger every year,” said Gerry Smith who has watched his wife’s efforts grow. “Unfortunately, it takes something like that [breast cancer] to open up your eyes.” After losing a son earlier in life Rose Amato feared the worse when her daughter was diagnosed.

cancer, “I was there with the family in the hospital. It’s amazing what she is doing now.” The staff wore matching shirts with a heart shaped breast cancer ribbon on the back that Smith designed, and each invited their own family and friends for support. “I love it, we do so much, we raise so much, and it’s fun,” said Carmella CascioOakey, a stylist at TopCuts for 4 years. 7 Deadly Mistakes That Will Cost You Thousands When You Sell Your Home LONG ISLAND – A new report has just been released which reveals 7 costly mistakes that most homeowners make when selling their home, and a 9 Step System that can help you sell your home fast and for the most amount of money. This industry report shows clearly how the traditional ways of selling homes have become increasingly less and less effective in today’s market. The fact of the matter is that fully three quarters of homesellers don’t get what they want for their home and become disillusioned and - worse - financially disadvantaged when they put their home on the market.
As this report uncovers, most homesellers make 7 deadly mistakes that cost them literally thousands of dollars. The good news is that each and every one of these mistakes is entirely preventable. In answer to this issue, industry insiders have prepared a free special report entitled “The 9 Step System to Get Your Home Sold Fast and For Top Dollar”. To hear a brief recorded message about how to order your free copy of this report, call 1-877-263-6397 and enter ID #1000. You can call anytime, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week . Call NOW to find out how you can get the most money for your home.

The End Of The World As We Know It
By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
Two days. That’s it. Two days from now, the world will end. What to do with those remaining 48 hours… Silly as it sounds, this is exactly what many people have been planning for in anticipation of the ominous 12.21.12. Pack your bags, stock up on the essentials and head underground with your rifles – because, let’s face it, ancient predictions seem to have a lot of merit in this day and age. Right. Call me a skeptic. Brand me a cynic. Perhaps, in
two days, all of us nonbelievers will be shocked by the turn of events. Or lack of, as the case may be. Let the doomsayers and naysayers battle it out. One interesting question it does bring to light is: What would you do with your last few days on earth? Who would you spend them with? Where would you go? What would you hope to accomplish? There never seems to be enough time day to day to do what we want. That’s under normal circumstances. But throw in the urgency of the end of civilization, and priorities tend to be reevaluated just a bit.
This is not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, in two days time, assuming we will all be sitting here laughing about the ancient Mayan prophecy gone wrong, we will have ample time to take this new “bucket” list and put it into action. Sort of like a new lease on life, no? So relax. Enjoy. Savor. Christmas is around the corner, followed by that traditional Times Square fresh start we all look forward to…and beyond that, who knows. Part of the fun, part of the adventure, part of the experience – here’s to the beginning of a whole new world!

Meeting Location Moved With facilities in Long Beach still unavailable due to damage from Hurricane Sandy, Mercy Medical Center is pleased to have the Long Beach Medical Center Breast Cancer and Breast Health Support Group hold its meetings at its facility in Rockville Centre. Beginning in January, meetings will be held at Mercy on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in the hospital’s board room, located on the first floor, adjacent to the chapel. Led by a registered nurse, the group offers a positive and
supportive environment for individuals with breast health issues, and residents of all nearby communities are invited to attend. The group offers support, guidance and education on the emotional, physical and psychological aspects of coping with breast cancer and other breast health issues, its impact on the individual as well as the family, and information on topics such as: understanding your diagnosis, treatment options, chemotherapy, radiation, pain management, exercise, nutrition, stress management
and more. Mercy’s ongoing efforts to assist the storm-devastated Long Beach community also include facilitating continuity of care by providing temporary space to Dr. Joel Benowitz, a surgeon whose offices were destroyed by the storm. Advance registration is not required to attend the support group. Light refreshments will be served and ample free parking will be available. For information and travel directions, call 516.62.MERCY.

How many students get the opportunity to give back and prepare for their futures at the same time? Approximately 50 students from the Nassau BOCES Joseph M. Barry Career & Technical Education Center (Barry Tech) did just that, offering their services to the worldrenowned Habitat for Humanity organization. These Barry Tech humanitarians worked to build a new Habitat home right here in Nassau County. Carpentry, construction electricity and plumbing students contributed to a variety of fundamental construction work, including roof framing, installation of insulation and windows, and running wiring and piping. This particular Habitat home had to meet the regulations of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which meant the Barry Tech workers got a crash course in ADA compliance. All entrances, both interior and exterior, had to be wheelchair accessible, and certain areas required special construction, such as a wheelchair ramp leading up to the entryway, and the creation of a custom bathroom and shower area. The Barry Tech students gained as much as they gave during the Habitat build. The students got invaluable on-the-job training and were able to apply 21st-century career skills in a real-life situation. Such projects enable students to put their skills to use, helping them to become college and career ready upon graduation. “Involvement in a project like this motivates our students to greater academic achievement,” says John Broderick, a Barry Tech work experience teacher coordinator. “Each and every student participates, regardless of skill-level. In addition to invaluable training, they get an opportunity to give back to their community. With the ADA component, our students learned how to help someone with specific needs to meet those needs in a day-to-day living environment.”

The importance of exercising good judgment, open communication and responsible behavior when entering into a relationship was clearly stressed to freshmen at Massapequa High School Ames Campus during two assemblies led by speakers from Love Heals, the Alison Gertz Foundation for AIDS Education. The assembly was one of several statemandated, age appropriate lessons conducted during the district’s AIDS Awareness Week, which concludes just before World AIDS Day, December 1st. Sobering statistics punctuated the words of the speakers and opened the Continued on Page 14

eyes of their adolescent audience, “One in four people with HIV have no idea they have it; every hour two teenagers are infected with the virus,” they informed, adding, “This is not a game; this is not a joke; you have to take responsibility for yourself.” Each year, a combination of skits, interactive lessons, guest speakers, videos and take-home lessons are presented to students aimed at protecting them from the dangers of risky behavior. At the middle and high school level, powerful lessons on how the disease is contracted and what students can do to protect themselves are presented by student peer educators in an engaging and interactive way, under the guidance of health education teacher Michael La Bella. Students learn important information about how the disease spreads and are given resources, such as where to
get tested. “These lessons provide our students with valuable information on how to stay safe and protected,” said Denise Baldinger, health education coordinating chairperson for Massapequa UFSD. “The more knowledge they have, the better prepared they are to handle a difficult situation.” On the elementary level, students in the lower grades are taught basic hygiene practices and those in the upper grades learn about how HIV/AIDS is a difficult disease to contract and how to be compassionate to those infected. The lessons are reinforced with a takehome activity to facilitate discussions in the home. To spread awareness among the community, a public viewing of panels from the World AIDS quilt is hosted at Massapequa High School where peer educators are on hand to answer questions for visitors.
All of us at Southside would like to extend our sincere appreciation to those who have devoted their time, efforts and resources to helping our local community recover in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Pinto announced that beginning Friday, December 14th, the Town will have free firewood available for Town residents. “Starting Friday, December 14th, and continuing every Friday, Saturday and Sunday through mid-March 2013, Town of Oyster Bay residents can come to the Town Highway yard, 150 Miller Place, Syosset, after 3 p.m. on Friday and between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, to pick up a trunk-full of cut, but not split, wood,” Councilman Pinto said. “No vehicles with commercial plates will be permitted.” Councilman Pinto went on to say that while getting firewood is important to stay warm during these cold winter months, it’s even more important to stay safe and practice safe habits when using a fireplace with a chimney or a wood burning stove. “Remember that both the fireplace and chimney need to be cleaned and inspected before the first use of the season to avoid any chance of a chimney fire,” the Councilman cautioned. “Precautions should also be taken when the fireplace is in use. The damper must always remain open whenever the fire is lit in the fireplace, and either screening or glass doors should be used to keep sparks from flying into the room.” The Councilman noted that many of the precautions regarding fireplaces also pertain to wood stoves, especially when it comes to keeping them clean and free of creosote. “Few things warm the body and soul during these cold winter months like a toasty fire,” Councilman Pinto commented. “So, pick up some free firewood, courtesy of the Town, and make sure your fireplace or wood stove is in good working order, so you can safely enjoy the special warmth that a fireplace or wood stove radiates.” For further information, call 516.677.5757.

Lindenhurst Chamber Of Commerce Information Center:
Massapequa Park Cub Scout Pack 696 held a successful holiday-wreathfundraiser sale with the help of very generous sponsorship from Infiniti of Massapequa and the DeStefano Family. Not only did Mr. DeStefano donate funds that exceeded the Pack’s expenses for the
fundraiser, he also provided the use of the Infiniti lot on Sunrise Highway as a prime selling location. The scouts, siblings and parents had fun interacting with the community as they raised funds. The day was festive for all with holiday carols for background music and
hot chocolate to keep scouts warm even though is was an unseasonably mild, but misty day. The proceeds from the 80 wreaths sold will support the pack programs throughout the year and allow the pack to continue to provide good will service to the community.
