They collected over 400 dog toys, treats and supplies that will be donated to the local animal shelter. This project developed as an outgrowth of the concept of giving to others in need. Students also learned how to appreciate the interaction between people and dogs.

Continuing to address one of the most pressing public health concerns facing Long Island and the nation, Mercy Medical Center is offering winter sessions of its outpatient Diabetes SelfManagement Training Program.

The four-session programs will be conducted in both January and February. Each begins with an hour-long individual assessment for each participant, followed by three weekly group workshops.

Group sessions will be conducted in January on Tuesday afternoons from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. and in February Tuesday evenings from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Each participant also receives a

The Stony Brook University School of Journalism received a $50,000 gift from Elaine Crosson and her son Daniel, to establish The Matthew T. Crosson Memorial Scholarship In Journalism which will endow a scholarship to support young journalists who wish to carry on the pursuit of public affairs journalism and advance public discourse for which the late Matt Crosson was so well known.

A portion of the funding comes from donations from family and friends, and the full $50,000 will be matched by a special grant to Stony Brook University by Jim and Marilyn Simons and the Simons Foundation, resulting in an impact of $100,000. The endowment will continue to be funded with additional donations from the community.

Matt Crosson, the beloved and highly-touted former President of the Long Island Association, a title he held for 16 years, died unexpectedly on December 23rd, 2010 from complications following a stroke. He resigned from the LIA earlier that year and accepted a job as the Chief Executive Officer of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce. Following his

death, Elaine and Dan, who is now 14, moved back to their home on Long Island after Elaine accepted a position at Stony Brook University as Vice President for External Relations.

“It has been two years since Matt passed away and Daniel and I still miss him so much, as does the rest of his family, and so many others who knew and loved him,” said Elaine Crosson, JD, Crosson’s wife of 17 years.

“Dan and I wanted to make this gift now to commemorate Matt’s legacy as a great advocate for public dialogue, and to provide others an opportunity to honor his memory.

“Matt was an attorney not a journalist by trade, yet his appreciation for the written word and his belief in responsible journalism was fierce, so in addition to his primary role of advancing economic development for Long Island, it was his personal mission to bring to fore the most pressing current affairs issues facing this community and all of New York by engaging some of the most relevant public figures and luminaries in our country in a personal dialogue right here in our own back yard.

Memorial Scholarship “The Matthew T. Crosson Memorial Scholarship endowment is meant to foster that mission, to keep the vision alive by supporting journalists in training at Stony Brook who will carry on the pursuit of public discourse that Matt so cherished.”

The Crosson scholarship will be available to a qualifying full-time junior or senior enrolled in the School of Journalism at Stony Brook University, where Jim Klurfeld, Crosson’s friend and longtime cohost of the public affairs program “Cutting Edge,” is a professor. The recipient must demonstrate a desire to pursue a career in journalism with a demonstrated interest in public affairs.

The recipient will also have the opportunity to intern at Newsday or at News 12 Long Island and Newsday.com or a special rotating internship at all three news outlets. One recipient per year beginning in the Fall 2013 academic year will be chosen by a selected committee appointed by School of Journalism School Dean, Howard Schneider.

“This scholarship will be invaluable in supporting students, year-after-year, whose passion will be to pursue reporting in the public interest,” said Schneider. “I can think of nothing more important.”

“This is not only a wonderful development for our program but wholly appropriate that it should be in Matt Crosson’s name,” said Klurfeld. “Whether he was a prosecutor, running the New York State Court system, heading the LIA or hosting a regular public affairs television show, Matt's goal was always to find the truth. That, of course, is also the goal of journalism.”

Children hospitalized at Stony Brook Long Island Children’s Hospital were the beneficiaries of a holiday visit from Sen. John Flanagan and members of the law firm Forchelli, Curto, Deegan, Schwartz, Mineo & Terrana, LLP, of Uniondale, NY, where Sen. Flanagan is of counsel, during a visit to Stony Brook Children’s on December 20th.

Chris Murray, Manager of Athletic Marketing at Stony Brook University, said that the athletes rallied to organize the holiday season toy drive.

They collected donations from Athletics and many other University departments. They also received donations from fans who attended Stony Brook basketball games throughout the month of December. The group of athletes able to make the bus delivery represented a number of Stony Brook sports, including lacrosse, soccer, swimming and diving.

The Bay Shore Beautification Society hosted its 13th Annual Light The Night event on Sunday, December 16th.

Bay Shore neighbors and friends joined together in a spirit of community and charity as they illuminated the streets of Bay Shore and Brightwaters with over 30,000 luminaries and raised funds to help keep Bay Shore beautiful.

As Bay Shore Beautification Society’s most important fundraising event, Light The Night proceeds help to supply the hanging baskets that grace Bay Shore’s downtown lampposts and support garden and maintenance projects throughout the community.

This year, a portion of the funds garnered from Light The Night also were donated to Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. Many

thanks to Light The Night Chairperson Deirdre Wahlberg for all her work on this project.

Some of Bay Shore High School’s most promising singers participated in a Master Class conducted by visiting opera singer Michael Riley. The class, one of the many cultural programs sponsored by the Bay Shore Schools Arts Education Fund (BSSAEF) this year, was attended by choir students as well as any student who did NYSSMA earlier this May or has plans to do NYSSMA next year.

Said BSSAEF Chairperson Susan Barbash, “Bay Shore has always had a strong Performing Arts program, but this year there just seems to be an explosion of vocal talent. These are young students who are just beginning to develop their voices. We want to encourage them to pursue their interest in music and voice.”

NURSE WINS AWARD - Bay Shore High School Nurse Mrs. Jacquelyn Mason was awarded the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk’s Outstanding Professional Award for 2012. This award was presented at the 19th annual Teen Parent Conference on December 6th and recognized her dedication and commitment to improving the lives of pregnant and parenting students. Riley is an opera and concert bass-baritone who has performed more than 150 roles over the course of a career that spans more than 40 years. He also enjoys working with young singers. Riley and his wife Cathy Barbash, a graduate of Bay Shore High School, divide their time between Philadelphia and New York City.

Riley explained, “It is important for young singers to acquire a good set of musical skills, especially sight reading and the basics of music theory. Piano study or learning to play an instrument can also be very helpful for singers. I get singing jobs frequently because I am a good sight reader.”

High School Music teacher and Director Chris Bilella said, “I was impressed that most of the students recognized that

This continuity between the two Master Classes helped stress the importance of good, healthy singing for the young vocalists.”

Students who took the class enjoyed Riley's visit and benefitted from his valuable instruction about vocal techniques.

“I thought the Master Class was really fun and it helped me to improve my breath support, voice placement and Spanish diction. I would love to do it again,” said Bay Shore High School Sophomore Remy DeJoseph, who scored a 96 on NYSSMA Level 6.

Developed by Charles Best, a high school History teacher in the Bronx, DonorsChoose.org makes it easy to help classrooms in need of supplies for specific projects, from pencils for poetry to microscopes for mitochondria. Bay Shore teachers have certainly found this to be the case.

At Bay Shore High School, Mr. Claiborne requested and received three tape measures and three packs of timers for his “Walk This Way” Physics lab, which requires students to mark out a course of travel, record times at which travelers cross designated locations, collect and graph their results and calculate the slope of the line to find velocity. At Bay Shore Middle School, Mrs. P a y n e - Ya r b o r o u g h ’s Newspaper Club received a camera, laptop and printer, all of which were used to enhance the school newspaper and successfully capture and reflect heartfelt and/or “magical” moments from around their school community.

At Fifth Avenue School, Mrs. Shelley’s students received a colorful, cozy carpet they now use as a

welcoming place to share stories, participate in learning activities and read comfortably throughout their literacy block. Another Fifth Avenue teacher, Mrs. Sharon Hinnant, submitted three projects to DonorsChoose and all were funded: Little Listeners in Need of Listening Center Materials, Little Learners in Need of Organization, and Alphabet Carpet. Mrs. Hinnant expressed her gratitude for the high quality stories/books on CD now available in the classroom’s listening center, the storage bins that are helping students learn to efficiently store and organize materials and supplies, and the huge, brightly colored alphabet carpet that enhances her students’ reading/community area.

Ms. Suzzivalli, a teacher at Fifth Avenue School, has had four projects funded t h r o u g h DonorsChoose.org: Essential Supplies for Young Reader and Writers, Creating a Cozy Reading Space for Eager Readers, Need for Non-Fiction and Essentials for Organization in the Classroom. Like Mrs.

Hinnant, Ms. Suzzivalli has since posted more project requests, hoping to receive even more donations from this wonderful organization.

At Gardiner Manor, one of Mr. Modderno’s requests, “I Can Be a Better Me from What I Read”, was also fully funded. His students received books about selfesteem that were used in the remedial reading program to enrich understanding about bullying and self-respect.

Nearly 2,200 students received a degree and became Stony Brook University’s newest alumni at the 15th annual Winter Commencement ceremony held today in the Pritchard Gymnasium located in the Intercollegiate Athletic Sports Complex. They join more than 150,000 predecessors world-wide whose lives and work personify the Stony Brook University mission.

Due to the ongoing renovation of the Sports Arena, this year’s commencement was held as two events; one for students from the College of Arts and Sciences and another for all other students. Degrees were conferred upon graduates who completed their degree requirements during any one of the following semesters: Summer 2012; Fall 2012; and, Winter 2013. In total, 2,197 students received degrees, including 1,053 Bachelor degrees, 776 Masters degrees, 217 Doctoral degrees and 151 Certificate recipients.

“You are graduating at an extraordinary time for our country and the world,” Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, told the graduates. “We face tremendous challenges, but also

t r e m e n d o u s opportunities; and I am convinced more and more every day that you and Stony Brook University are absolutely at the right place and the right time to make a positive difference in these difficult times.”

President Stanley highlighted five personal stories of adversity and achievement at the ceremonies.

He recognized Amy Pope (Psychology), 23, a resident of Long Beach, NY, who lost her home, car and all her possessions in Superstorm Sandy; Michael Tonge (Political Science), 23, of Harlem, NY, who endured the adversity of attending 12 different public schools in 12 years and went on to become the first of his seven siblings to graduate from college; Terence Coyle (Masters in Social Work), 54, from Huntington, NY, a retired FDNY member suffering from the effects of spinal injuries and multiple surgeries, who went back to school to attain the skills and training necessary to begin a second career with the goal of helping people and striving for positive social change; Kyle Essington (Business Management), 22, of Chino Hills, CA, who was the starting quarterback for the

football team this year (2012) and most of the 2011 season. Kyle’s story is one of hard work and making the most of opportunities, leading the Seawolves to consecutive Big South titles (fourth straight overall) and two appearances in the Division I Football Championship playoffs, successfully balancing academics and athletics to earn accolades in both; and also recognized Poornima Peiris (Engineering), 23, of Cutchogue, NY, a student that emigrated from Sri Lanka with her family when she was just 12 years old. Growing up on the east end, she found herself immersed in a whole new culture. Today, she is the first person in her extended family to receive a college degree.

“Stony Brook graduates are among the most successful of any public university in finding employment after graduation or continuing to graduate school,” said President Stanley. “I pledge that we will work to improve your prospects even more by increasing the value of your degree as we move toward our goal of being one of the 25 best public universities in the world.”

Repair Initiative

Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk, Long Island is literally mobilizing to help those homeowners drastically affected by Hurricane Sandy. Armed with a brand new Chevrolet C-20 panel van fully equipped with tools provided by Lowe’s and the Robert Bosch Corporation, teams of Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk (HFHS) professionals and volunteers will be helping to repair homes owned by those most needy.

The van and equipment were provided

by Habitat for Humanity International as were 23 others donated in the region.

“Through our repair initiative called Habitat Suffolk Helps™ we will make a positive impact in some of Suffolk County’s most devastated communities,” said Warren Davis, Habitat’s Construction Director.

“Working with corporate and congregational groups, in addition to the many individual volunteers who are the backbone of Habitat for Humanity, this outfitted mobile response unit will help us maximize our efforts to reach our ultimate goal of providing families a safe, habitable place to live.”

“These mobile response units are an exciting new offering from Habitat for Humanity that will assist families who need help with critical home repairs,” said Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity International. “We are immensely grateful to all the volunteers who will work alongside these response units, and to Chevrolet, Lowe’s and Bosch for their generous donations.”
