uffolk County Treasurer Angie Carpenter was honored to be present at the recent Sinai Reform Temple Menorah Lighting, along with other members of the community, to help celebrate the Hanukkah holiday. The Rabbi of the Temple led the attendees in some traditional holiday songs, and all present enjoyed the traditional donuts and potato latkes. Sinai Reform Temple has a proud history in the Bay Shore community, and will be celebrating its 65th Anniversary in 2013. Thanks to all those who came out to commemorate this annual tradition. Some of the attendees are pictures here alongside the Menorah.

January 7th, 2013 marks opening day for the special January shotgun season for deer hunting in Suffolk County, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation reminded sportsmen and women today. Hunting areas have been expanded to include all of Suffolk County for the 2013 shotgun season to help manage an expanding deer population. January shotgun season runs from January 7th through January 31st, 2013, weekdays only. There is no deer hunting allowed on weekends during this special season in Suffolk County. In response to the upcoming expanded deer season, DEC’s E n v i r o n m e n t a l Conservation Officers (ECOs) will step up patrols to assure compliance with the regulations. “While we support the opportunities for our local sportsmen and women to assist in the management of our whitetail deer
resource, it is important that hunters do so lawfully and safely,” ECO Captain Timothy Huss said. DEC regulations require that lands eligible for deer hunting must be at least 10 acres in size, and hunters must possess a valid big game hunting license, a signed landowner’s endorsement and a town permit. Only shotguns loaded with a single slug and muzzleloaders are legal for use during the January season. Crossbows are no longer a legal hunting instrument in New York as of December 31, 2012. Hunters should check with local towns and villages to determine any local restrictions or discharge ordinances. Overpopulations of deer have the ability to negatively impact natural habitats along with agricultural, public and private properties, and public health in the forms of automobile/deer collisions and tick-borne diseases. Hunting is DEC’s most effective and efficient
known tool to maintain wildlife populations at levels that are compatible with communities and natural resources. For additional information on deer hunting opportunities on Long Island, visit the DEC website at http://www.dec. ny.gov/outdoor/40409. html. Deer hunting regulations can be found by visiting the following page: http://www.dec. ny.gov/outdoor/8305.html.
DONATION MADE - The Honors Club at the Ammerman Campus of Suffolk County Community College recently raised funds for Long Island Cares in Hauppauge. The students also volunteered their time on December 17th to package food items and jackets for those in need. These items will be shipped to local food pantries all across Long Island.

AMERICAN ACADEMY OF SELF DEFENSE It’s A Fact... Karate Kids Do BETTER In School
GET BACK IN THE BEST SHAPE EVER FOR 2013
Hurricane Sandy ripped through many parts of Long Island devastating houses and people’s lives. Parents struggling to repair their homes, children being bused to other schools, wondered if Santa would be able to find them this Christmas. Boys and girls in the Lindenhurst parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help one of the areas hardest hit by the Super Storm and subsequent nor’easter -
didn’t have to worry thanks to St. Joseph Hospital located in Bethpage. “We wanted to do something special for children this year,” said St. Joseph Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer Drew Pallas. “Our staff collected toys and we had Santa, Mrs. Claus, the Snow Queen and Santa’s elves deliver gifts and hosted a party at the parish to brighten the kids’
holiday.” The event was held Tuesday, December 18th, and more than 100 children turned out for the heartwarming event. Some children asked Santa for a new home, because their homes had been destroyed by the storm. All left with toys, candy canes, a visit with Mr. and Mrs. Clause and stomachs full of hot chocolate, cupcakes and candy.

The Learning Curve By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I hate learning new things. I do. Sure, it’s great to broaden your horizons and add skills to your repertoire, but the actual learning process? Not so much fun. I prefer to fast forward to the part where I miraculously become highly proficient at something (which sometimes never happens) rather than muddle for too long in the learning curve portion. The funny part is that, with most things, once this “curve” has been navigated, you often realize that the new thing you were so
hesitant to take on wasn’t so bad in the first place. Simple, even. Just took a little getting used to, was all. Over time, we seem to be able to adapt to anything. Think about it. Look back on all your years in school… weren’t you nervous the first time being tested on a particular subject? Didn’t you get butterflies the morning of a big presentation? Wasn’t your initial reaction to any massive projects to immediately push them to the back of your mind and procrastinate? New = Frightening then, and it still does, to some extent, now.
They often say you should try one new thing each and every day – whether something as simple as tasting a new food, reading a new book or buying a new pair of jeans…right on up to the more monumental decisions of whether to search for a new job or buy a new house or travel the world. New = Exciting. It signifies growth, maturity, experience – all those things associated with moving onward and upward. Sometimes, all it takes is a little help navigating the curve to ultimately see the path for what it is – a straight line to improvement.

Celebrated Diamond The most celebrated diamond is the Koh-i-noor, which was presented to Queen Victoria in 1850 by the East India Company.
A big local and national news story of 2012 was Hurricane Sandy, the largest Atlantic Ocean hurricane on record, which created unprecedented destruction in New York and New Jersey in lost lives and property. Youth soccer organizations affiliated with the U.S. Youth Soccer have responded. Region 1 established a Disaster Relief Grant Program for Region 1 clubs/ organizations that have suffered damage as a result of the storm. 20 grants, each up to $2,000, are being awarded. On the way to a total donation of $80,000, the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) has given $46,000 in checks to its needy clubs. The money has already been sent to those needy clubs in the Cosmopolitan Junior Soccer League (CJSL), Staten Island Youth Soccer League (SIYSL) and Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) for Hurricane Sandy Relief. Additionally, the LIJSL has established a Disaster
Relief Fund Program of $125,000 for its members/ clubs that suffered damage as a direct result from Hurricane Sandy. Approved funds are available to be awarded. In order to be eligible to receive a LIJSL Hurricane Sandy Fund, the individual or club must be an affiliated organization with the LIJSL, ENYYSA and US Youth Soccer. Contact the LIJSL at 631.648.9020 for more information. The East Hudson Youth
Soccer League (EHYSL) was not as affected by Hurricane Sandy as its downstate neighbors so they have graciously donated $4,000 to the SIYSL and $2,000 to the LIJSL. While all these good works continue, a for-profit company, SportsSignup in Saratoga Springs, made a $10,000 donation last month to ENYYSA leagues most affected by Hurricane Sandy. The CJSL, SIYSL and LIJSL each received $3,333.

Journals Of War Vets
Islip Town Councilman John Cochrane Jr. will soon begin collecting names and biographical information of certain Islip veterans to be featured in the latest edition of Islip’s Journal of War Veterans. Past editions of the Journal have covered those Islip residents who served in World War Two, Korea, Vietnam, and other modern conflicts. The new edition is slated to chronicle the actions of all combat veterans who have served in the first Gulf War to the present War on Terror. “The past editions of the Journal of War Veterans have been inspirational documents that have shown the depth of service which Islip’s residents have given to their nation,” said Councilman Cochrane. “As a retired Captain of the U.S. Navy, this project holds a special place in my heart.” Prior editions of the
Journal have relied upon residents submitting their own family’s history as it relates to the current edition. Islip residents are encouraged to send their submissions to Councilman Cochrane’s office at 655 Main Street, Islip NY 11751. Submissions may also be sent electronically to islipwarjournal@ townofislip-ny.gov A form may be downloaded from the Town website here. All submissions should include the following information: 1. Name, date of birth, and hamlet where the Veteran grew up 2. Where they attended high school/college 3. When they joined the military 4. Where they served 5. Medals/honors received during their service 6. Date of discharge 7. Where they currently
reside 8. Current occupation 9. A photo 10. Contact information for the person submitting the information “This project is just a small way of honoring the service and sacrifices made by Islip residents to the United States and to the world,” said Councilman Cochrane. Any family member, friend, or veteran with questions about this project should call Councilman Cochrane’s office at 631.224.5559.

Walk-A-Thon A Success
Suffolk Transportation Service, Inc. headquartered in Bay Shore, has called upon their employees to participate in a Walk-athon to raise money for the Long Island Chapter United Way in support of Military families and neighbors in need on Long Island. The Walk-a-thon was held at the Holtsville Ecology Center on Sunday, October 21st. The event was a fun and healthy way to raise money. The STS United Way

As residents and a part of the local business community, Suffolk
Transportation plays an active role in numerous charitable and communitybased organizations, local fire de- partments, EMS and law enforcement agencies, along with many business and educa- tional partnerships. President of Suffolk Transportation, John J. Corrado, who is also Chairman of the Board for the Long Island Chapter of the United Way, was on hand to support the Walka-thon.

Carry-On Made Easier (NAPSI)-Doing a little homework before you travel could save you time at the airport. For instance, visiting www.TSA.gov, the Transportation Security Administration’s Web site, can help you learn what
items can be packed in carry-on and which are best left in checked suitcases. You can also learn size requirements for toiletries that are allowed on planes and then find properly sized items in stores. As a final tip, remember
that all carry-on gels, liquids and aerosols need to be placed in a 1-quart, single zip-top, clear plastic bag. For more information and tips, visit www.shave. com.
MENORAH LIGHTING - Treasurer Carpenter was honored to be present at the Sinai Reform Temple Menorah Lighting, along with other members of the community to help celebrate the Hanukkah holiday. The Rabbi led the attendees in some traditional holiday songs and all present enjoyed the traditional donuts and potato latkes. Sinai Reform Temple has a proud history in the Bay Shore community, and will be celebrating their 65th Anniversary in 2013.
