In keeping with the Cancer Center’s mission, these programs offer a wide variety of respite, advocacy and hope – not only to the patient, but to family members and caregivers as well.

Flashbacks & Fun Times By: Jamie Lynn Ryan You never know what you might find when cleaning out the closet. I recently came across a handful of those origami-type, square and triangle-folded notes that we all used to exchange like crazy back in middle school.

I remember writing dozens upon dozens of them and slipping them through the vents of my friends’ lockers between classes, then excitedly waiting for them to write back so I would have my own “mail” to look forward to the next time I stopped at my own locker.

How funny.

It’s too bad I didn’t save them all, as I’m sure they would have made for some fascinating reading all these

years later. Notes full of class schedules, song lyrics, lists of boys we had crushes on…the usual pre-teen drama that seemed oh-soimportant at the time. We even developed our own language of sorts, with abbreviations and symbols that (so we thought) only we could comprehend.

Such innocence.

And then there were the “love” letters, those cute little poems surrounded by lots of hearts and x’s and o’s, and of course the requisite “A.A.F.” signifying the “always and forever” mentality that all 12 year-olds seem to have with regard to “love.” As corny as it all sounds now, there was definitely an underlying sweetness to those types of notes, a sense that somehow, with that

scrawled message of affection, everything was “official.”

It’s a wonder, thinking back on it, how any of us managed to get any work done in between composing these little nuggets of wisdom – because you know they all had to be written during class time. After all, how else to make sure our friends were continuously updated on our comings and goings from the last 40 minute class!

So many memories encapsulated by those little folded pieces of paper. A slice of life, preserved for all eternity on an 8-1/2 x 11-inch piece of loose-leaf paper. It doesn’t get any better than that.

Can’t wait to see what other treasures my closet will uncover.

Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism on Long Island, is hosting its annual Rockin’ For Autism Concert on Sunday, February 17th, from 3 to 8 p.m. Mulcahy’s Pub and Music Hall in Wantagh will once again be heating things up with Long Island’s best rock-n-roll bands to benefit children and adults with Autism and other developmental disabilities.

Stony Brook University is one of 600+ universities internationally to participate in RecycleMania 2013, which pits colleges and universities to compete for stewardship bragging rights over which institution can reduce, reuse and recycle the most waste. Over an eight-week period from February 3rd to March 30th, participating schools compete in various categories measuring the success of their recycling, waste reduction and sustainability efforts.

“We are stepping up our efforts to win it all this year,” said James O’Connor, Director of Sustainability and Transportation Operations at Stony Brook University. “In order to promote recycling and waste reduction, we are offering complimentary shredding services, recycling receptacle drop off for office spring cleanings, electronics recycling and waste minimization through junk mail elimination.”

In 2012, Stony Brook University reached a pinnacle of success in RecycleMania by placing 17th out of 296 entries in the competition’s Gorilla category, which ranks universities on the total weight of bottles, cans, cardboard and recycled paper collected.

This category’s ranking was the highest of any college or university in New York State. Stony Brook also placed eighth out of 67 entries in the

E-Waste category for the total weight of recycled electronic waste.

“We are proud of our RecycleMania 2012 success and can’t wait for this year’s competition which starts on February 3. Stony Brook continues to make substantial improvements in the field of recycling by increasing the number of receptacles, installing new signage and increasing the amount of products we recycle,” said O’Connor.

The Office of Sustainability is also supporting the Project 50 Forward Managed Output Project (MOP) led by the Division of Information Technology and Procurement Office.

MOP is reviewing paper usage, working to decrease the University’s carbon footprint and to develop solutions to reduce, recycle and implement output savings.

“During the past year this project saved 800,000 pages per semester simply by removing student cover pages from TLT Sinc Site printing output.” said David Ecker, Information Technology Manager.

“The Library has also installed several multifunction devices that allow students to scan important library materials into their personal USB drive at no charge. Plans for the future include implementing a comprehensive University toner recycling program and looking for ways to streamline document workflow throughout the campus.”

Public Service Award

Stony Brook University autism expert John C. Pomeroy, M.D, received the 2013 Public Service Award from the New York Suffolk County Martin Luther King Jr. Commission at its 22nd Annual Awards Luncheon on January 18th at the Hyatt Regency in Hauppauge.

Dr. Pomeroy was honored for his work with special needs children, said Florence Joyner, chairperson of the luncheon. “He has worked tirelessly to develop services for children and adults with autism spectrum disorders at Stony Brook and advocated for the local development of school programs and improved clinical services,” she said.

Dr. Pomeroy is Associate Professor of Pediatrics & Psychiatry at Stony Brook University School of Medicine, Head of Division of Developmental Disabilities, and Founding Director of The Cody Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities at Stony Brook Children’s Long Island Children’s Hospital. He has served as Director of The Cody Center since its opening in 2001 and joined Stony Brook as the first faculty member in the Division of Child Psychiatry.

In 1997, Dr. Pomeroy formed the Division of Developmental Disabilities within the Psychiatry Department at Stony Brook in collaboration with Lynda Geller, PhD. In 2001, with major philanthropic and University support,

including a gift of $2.5 million from Matt and Debra Cody of Port Jefferson, NY, The Cody Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities opened with Dr. Pomeroy serving as its Director.

The Cody Center is now a division of the Department of Pediatrics at Stony Brook Long Island Children’s Hospital.

“John has led a rapid expansion of clinical and community services for Autism and developmental disabilities at Stony Brook,” said Margaret McGovern, MD, PhD, Professor and Chairman, Department of Pediatrics, Stony Brook University School of Medicine, and Physician-in-Chief, Stony Brook Long Island Children’s Hospital. “Not only is he a leader in his clinical field, he has been an outstanding public servant and advocate for children with autism.”

Dr. Pomeroy’s interest in the broader diagnostic concept of autism dates back to projects he began as a resident at the University of Iowa. In 1984, he received the J. Franklin Robinson Award from the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. He has been the author of more than 70 articles, abstracts and book chapters, with an emphasis on two fields of interest: (1) diagnostic sub-typing of the autism spectrum and (2) the diagnosis and treatment of emotional/ behavioural disorders in individuals with cognitive or developmental

disabilities.

In addition to his research interests, he has developed a broad range of clinical and training programs. In the 1990s, he received funding from New York State to develop a continuum of psychiatric care for dually diagnosed (MH/ MR) individuals on Long Island, and for a fellowship training program for child and adolescent psychiatrists to specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of individuals with dual diagnosis. More recently, he served as a principal collaborator in the formation of the Downstate Center of Excellence for Dual Diagnosis, a consortium of 30 agencies created to enhance staff training and expertise in recognition and management of mental disorders in persons with mental retardation or developmental disabilities.

Initial funding was provided by the New York State Developmental Disabilities Planning Council.

Dr. Pomeroy received his medical degree from the University of London in 1973. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. In 2009, he was named 2009 Health Care Professional of the year by the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County and received the Physician of Distinction award from the Nassau Physicians Foundation.

(NAPSI)—Pet owners have become increasingly aware of the importance of pet oral health and its effect on whole-body health and well-being. While daily tooth-brushing is the gold standard in oral care for pets as it is for humans, less than 1 percent of dog owners are compliant.

Instead, many turn to treats with dental benefits, known for being more enjoyable for pets and most convenient for owners.

A new study shows that 77 percent of dog owners gave treats they believed to provide oral care benefits last year, with 30 percent increasing such treat giving. Yet up to 60 percent of them don’t realize that their dogs may have progressing oral disease.

Part of the problem is lack of veterinary care. Also, most treats that claim to clean teeth lack the research to prove it.

“Veterinary dentists only trust a fraction of treats to be effective at cleaning teeth and safely protecting

them,” says Dr. Jan Bellows, veterinary dentist, diplomate and incoming president of the American Veterinary Dental College.

According to Dr. Bellows, it’s important for pet owners to understand which dental treats work effectively to eliminate plaque and tartar buildup and are safe for pet teeth.

“Some dental treats, especially real bones, are notorious for their low nutritional value and their hard textures, which can contribute to tooth fractures,” Dr. Bellows says.

Many consumers are accustomed to seeking out toothbrushes and toothpaste that carry the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of approval. And dental standards are equally as important for pets and their oral health.

Fortunately, there’s a governing body that confirms if dental treats work, using third-party testing. The Veterinary

Helping Doctors Help Patients Stop How To Decide If A Cat Is Right For Smoking You

(NAPSI)—To help protect you and your family from tobacco-related death and disease, researchers from Legacy®, a national public health organization dedicated to building a world where anyone can quit smoking, recommend two actions: stop smoking or never start. If you do smoke or use tobacco, speak to your doctor about quitting smoking.

A survey of more than 3,146 adults in the U.S. conducted by Legacy discovered that more than one in 10 smokers have concealed their smoking status from a health care provider—nearly half of them stated it was because they are ashamed that they smoke. Another reason for not disclosing this important information to a medical professional: two-thirds surveyed who did not disclose their smoking status reported not wanting to be lectured about smoking.

Fortunately, health care professionals such

as doctors, nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, dentists and pharmacists can help smokers by bringing up the subject with patients.

To assist with that, Legacy and Pfizer have developed a downloadable, userfriendly guide for health care providers to help them discuss smoking and tobacco use with their patients.

Here are hints to help: • Talk openly about smoking. Ask every patient if they smoke. This may open the door to successful intervention.

• Be positive and encouraging.

Smokers are often dealing with shame or fear of quitting.

Congratulate the smoker on the decision to quit and reiterate how you are there to help them on their journey.

• Encourage smokers not to give up. Smoking is a chronic, relapsing medical condition; the average smoker tries to quit 6/9 times in their

lifetime. Remind smokers that quitting is difficult, but can be attainable.

• Make sure smokers understand smoking for what it really is: a treatable medical condition.

• Suggest patients consider evidence-based treatments, such as overthe-counter or prescription medications, and refer them to counseling to help them quit. Patients can call the national tollfree quitline, (800)-QUITNOW, for free counseling or seek help from no-cost websites such as www.

• Arrange follow-up contact as necessary to try to prevent relapse. More than 45 million Americans currently smoke and an estimated 70 percent of them want to quit, but lack the tools to do so.

Are you ready to make the commitment to a pet? Cats can live up to 18 years.

On average, pet care costs about $400 a year.

• Visit a pet adoption center. Don’t shop when you can adopt. Shelters have many cats to choose from and adoption saves lives.

• Questions? Ask the staff. The shelter staff can often tell you the animal’s personality traits, likes, dislikes, temperament, breed, and activity level.

Keep your options open.

A pet doesn’t have to be a kitten to be a loyal companion.

• Patience. Be patient.

You may need to visit the adoption centers a few times before you find the cat that’s right for you.

• Decide as a family.

Does the cat get along with everyone and how does everyone get along with

the cat?

• You made a decision, now what? Here are some items you should have before bringing your new cat home: ID tag and breakaway collar, cat food, pet bowls (2), litter box (rule of thumb: one for each cat, plus one), litter and scooper, toys, treats, scratching post, cat carrier (for vet trips/ emergencies) and a plan for veterinary care.

A New Tactic In The War Against Cholesterol

There’s good news for those concerned about cholesterol and their health. They may have a new way to regulate their cholesterol level that doesn’t involve prescription drugs.

Cholesterol is a naturally occurring substance in the human body. It is used to make many of our hormones, vitamin D and bile acids, which aid fat digestion and keep cell membranes intact. How much you have is based on a combination of genetics and lifestyle.

However, too much LDL cholesterol—often referred to as “bad cholesterol”—can slowly build and contribute to heart disease and clogged arteries. Some will try to manage their cholesterol with diet and exercise while others will turn to

prescription medications.

A New Approach One of the latest approaches to managing cholesterol involves taking a nutritional supplement. One such supplement, called Sytrinol, is described as a safe, effective cholesteroland triglyceride-lowering nutrient that is designed to begin working in 30 days.

The supplement is made up of a blend of powerful antioxidants including polymethoxylated flavones (PMFs) and a range of palm (alpha, delta and gamma) tocotrienols.

According to a published clinical study, Sytrinol was able to significantly lower total cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides. The formula is also said to increase HDL levels. This is often referred to as the “good cholesterol” because of

the way it transports LDL cholesterol away from the heart and back into the bloodstream.

Heart-Healthy Ingredients One of the main active ingredients in Sytrinol is a group of compounds derived from the peels of citrus fruits. The two most common are tangeretin and nobiletin, which are described as extremely potent bioflavonoids.

Another ingredient is a group of palm tocotrienols, which are members of the vitamin E family and are extracted from the fruit of the palm tree. Like vitamin E, palm tocotrienols control anti-inflammatory responses and degrade a key enzyme used by the liver to produce cholesterol.

New School To Open

The Bridges Academy, a new independent school, is opening in West Islip on the South Shore, offering exceptional educational opportunities from preschool (2 year-olds) all the way through to the 8th grade.

An Open House at the school is set for Sunday, February 10th, from 1 to 4 p.m. at 339 Snedecor Avenue in West Islip.

With the end of a turbulent and traumatic year, marked by a devastating storm and a wave of public and parochial school closings that promises to continue in 2013, comes Bridges Academy, a unique and dynamic academic environment that promises to prepare students for life in an interdependent world.

Bridges, based in a modern, well-equipped school building, will open in September as a fully independent, federally recognized not-forprofit, with NYS Board of Education accreditation.

The school came about through a grassroots effort led by educators and parents and a broad

base in the South Shore community.

Governance of the school will be by an independent board made up of educators and parents and key members of the South Shore community.

Frank Fallon, a headmaster with more than four decades of experience as an award-winning teacher and principal, will join The Bridges Academy and, as head of school, will lead an outstanding team of teachers in all academic disciplines.

Mr. Fallon said, “Bridges stands on the pillars of character, confidence and knowledge. Bridge’s mission is to treat each student as an individual, helping them to fully realize their academic and spiritual potential with a curriculum that is dynamic, challenging and contemporary.”

He continued, “Our student body is multicultural and richly diverse, with students from many ethnic, religious and socio/ economic backgrounds, a mirror image of the global environment our students will enter.”
