his February, Bay Shore Gardiner Manor School’s Service Society coordinated a valentine and shoe drive called Sending A Smile. Over 200 pairs of new and gently used shoes were collected for those in need, while several hundred valentine cards and crafts were handmade by students. These creations sent a smile to nursing home residents and hospital patients on Valentine’s Day, when they were distributed by Helping Hands Charity.

On January 30th, Bay Shore Gardiner Manor School held its 13th Annual Circus and invited every second grade student in the district to attend. This year’s theme, Billboard Top 100 Hits, showcased popular contemporary songs. Each year, the Gardiner Manor Circus features every 5th grader - in the

show! Students sign up to be clowns, stilt walkers, unicycle riders, devil stickers, diabolos, pep squad dancers, jugglers, jump ropers, plate spinners, acrobats or part of the backstage crew. This year’s show ended with the entire 5th grade class singing the Gardiner Manor song, written by Music teacher Josh

Kant. The GMS Physical Education Staff directed and created this year’s successful Circus, having only had the month of January to prepare. Many thanks to Eli Alam, Tess Balzano, Mary Drago and Mike Herbst for all their hard work and dedication.

the American Heart Association (AHA). National Wear Red Day for Women is a massive national public awareness day urging women, people from all walks of life, businesses, towns, schools, the media, buildings and landmarks to “go red” and “glow red” to bring attention to the No. 1 killer of females – cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular diseases claim more women’s lives annually than the next five causes of death combined. “The annual American Association’s Employees from various Services (CHS) and the on February 1st, as part Heart divisions and locations CHS Continuing Care of National Wear Red National Wear Red Day is of Catholic Health Division were seeing red Day celebration to benefit an easy, powerful way to

speak up and show support for Go Red For Women,” said Alyson Gucciardo, Community Relations Manager. “We want to encourage our employees to take care of their hearts and live healthier lifestyles.” For 10 years, women have been fighting heart disease individually and together as part of the Go Red For Women movement. More than 627,000 women’s lives have been saved, but the fight is far from over. Heart disease is still women’s No. 1 killer – it affects more women than men and is more deadly than all forms

of cancer combined. The American Heart Association Go Red For Women movement is about turning around these statistics. Go Red For Women invites women to make it their mission to take charge of their heart health through simple lifestyle changes like quitting smoking, eating healthier, exercising more and maintaining a healthy weight. Women can find important health tips at www.goredforwomen.org including online tools and health assessments.

Spring Fever By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Spring has sprung. That’s it. I’ve decided. One sunny day amid a week of snow and sleet and rain, and it’s official. Enough of this winter wonderland nonsense. Funny, since we have really only had one substantial snowstorm over the course of the last three or so winters; but the one was… well, quite a storm, shall we say. And just like that, all the relatively pleasant winters of the past few years have been forgotten – wiped out from the collective memory. Isn’t that always the way? One season gives way to the

next – and we, as a society, go from complaining about the cold, to whining about the spring rain, to being exhausted by the oppressive heat…and then, oh no, here comes that autumn chill again! One endless cycle of wishing for something other than what we have, only to promptly wish it away as soon as it’s within our grasp. We are a flaky bunch, aren’t we? And to think other societies would give anything to live in a temperate climate such as ours, complete with four seasons – and the occasional natural disaster of course. Seriously, in the last year or

two, we’ve experienced two substantial hurricanes, a blizzard of epic proportions, a minor earthquake…am I forgetting anything else? Dare we ask – what next? Well, what’s next for me is spring. Beautiful, mild, clear and crisp. Spring. My favorite season, when the summer is still looming, everything is blooming and the days take on a renewed, vital energy that has been missing throughout the long winter of hibernation and doldrums. Sure, it may officially be a month or so away – but the mentality is here now. Embrace it.

With all the snow that New York received last weekend, the question on everyone’s mind is, “When does spring begin?” Spring officially arrives on March 20th but most people associate the

march toward spring with other events. For baseball fans, spring begins when pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training in Florida and Arizona. To others, it’s when they hear the chirping of happy

birds who have returned from Florida. For New York soccer fans, the first sign of spring is the Long Island Junior Soccer League Convention. With over 1,500 travel and premier teams, the LIJSL is the largest soccer league in the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA). The LIJSL Convention is annually one of the world’s largest soccer conventions and promises as always to have something for everyone. 10,000 people are once again expected to flock to the convention from March 8th to 10th at the Huntington Hilton on Route 110 in Melville. The fun begins at 8 p.m. on Friday night, March 8th with the Club Recognition Dinner. The Volunteer of the Year from each LIJSL club will be honored. Dolores Jose of the Mineola Athletic Association, Mitch Pally of the Stony Brook Soccer Club, Bob Porter of the Cold Spring Harbor/ Huntington Soccer Club and Tom Vollmuth of the East Islip Soccer Club will be inducted into the LIJSL Hall of Fame at the dinner as well. Throughout the day on Saturday, March 9th and on Sunday morning, March 10th, there will be LIJSL Sportsmanship Award presentations, meetings for club presidents, coaches and volunteers plus coaches and referee clinics as thousands of people purchase items from vendors who have come from around the world. There will also be a College Forum in English and Spanish on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. for all interested high school students and their families. Admission to the 31st Annual LIJSL Convention is free. For more information, please contact the LIJSL at 631.648.9020.

SPREADING THE CHEER - Smiles and giggles filled the room at ACLD’s Kramer Learning Center with a visit from Santa. Stacey Logan-Docke, a U.S. Trust/Bank of America volunteer, joyfully played Santa Claus for the preschool students. She was accompanied by a U.S. Trust/Bank of America volunteer, Valerie Sully, who played an elf and assisted with the children and handed out candy canes. In addition, Patricia Calcado of U.S. Trust/Bank of America donated toys to the children.

BEDTIME STORIES - Last month, Brook Avenue School - in collaboration with its PFA - hosted its annual Bedtime Stories nights. While pajama-clad students read stories with Brook Avenue teachers in classrooms, parents attended workshops designed to help them support their children’s efforts to improve math skills and become lifelong readers. Before and after the event, parents and students had the opportunity to visit the Brook Avenue Scholastic Book Fair in the school cafeteria. All funds raised by the fair will be used to enrich individual classroom libraries.

POT LUCK PERFORMANCE - Brownie Troop 1414 of Bay Shore entertained the guests and members of the Bay Shore Historical Society at its annual Pot Luck Dinner held at the Bay Shore Brightwaters Library. The girls sang a medley of Christmas carols and festive holiday songs lead by their leader, Rosina O’Shea.

During his visit, Mr. Lauria delivered a very powerful message to the students about not giving up on a dream. He spoke about being faced with negativity, from people who told him he could never publish a book, and declared to the students: Believe in yourself and anything is possible. Mr. Lauria is currently working on another children’s book and has published two books of poems. Bettinelli’s Community Boxing Academy proudly announces its grand reopening celebration on Saturday, March 2nd, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. After 8 years serving the residents in the Greater Lindenhurst area, BCBA is relocating to West Islip. Operating from the Westbrook Elementary School at 350 Higbie Lane, BCBA will continue its mission to provide local youth (as well as adults) with innovative, wellrounded, athletic programs that have been the core of its success. Teaching the natural virtues of Devotion, Respect, Integrity, Fairness and Temperance, all of the D.R.I.F.T. Youth Empowerment Programs are designed to help kids become self-reliant so they can go on to become champions in life. boxing program; presented by The Long Island Press. “I consider it a blessing to be able to positively impact the lives of young people. But none of this would be possible without what I consider the most qualified and passionate team of like-minded coaches, mentors, and supporters. Receiving this honor makes our whole staff proud and fuels our desire to continue the great work we began doing back in 2004,” said Ray Bettinelli, Head Boxing Coach and Director of Operations for BCBA.” As part of the re-opening celebration, residents are invited to tour the facility, meet the staff and enroll their children in a variety of youth programs including Amateur Boxing, Judo, Capoeira and After School Basketball. Refreshments will be served and party favors given to the first 100 kids to attend. The Pledge of Allegiance kicks off the event led by Ret. Chief of Police, Lou Telano and Ret. Lt.

Robert Johnson along with members of the Armed Forces. There will be a benediction by a Police Chaplin and business leaders and politicians will be on hand for a ceremonial ribbon cutting. In addition, the stories of special guest speakers serve to motivate, educate and inspire. Fitness challenges and raffles add to the festivities, while onsite local vendors provide money saving offers. Devoted to providing character building athletic programs from the community in which it operates since 2004, BCBA is a recognized 501 C-3 all volunteer nonprofit organization (Community Boxing Center, Inc.). It functions solely on the generosity, contributions and support of the private sector. For additional information on BCBA and its programs call 631.412.3686 or please visit: www.BCBA.info.
