The Middle School Toy Making Club, established in 2008, meets every week and is advised by technology teacher, Mr. Steve Kaplan. NAVAL EXPERIENCE - On February 15th, Islip Town Councilman John Cochrane met with a group of students from Mrs. Maggie Cohen’s class at Bay Shore High School to talk about his experiences in the U.S. Navy. The students had recently read the book The Things They Carried, and Mr. Cochrane enjoyed answering the student’s questions and displaying his accouterments collected from his many years of service. Many thanks to Mrs. Cohen for organizing the visit and to Councilman Cochrane for taking time out of his busy schedule to come and inspire Bay Shore students.

Back To Basics By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The more I drive, the more I realize how many truly incompetent motorists there are out there. Let’s start with the basics. If you come out to find snow accumulated on the roof of your car, CLEAN IT OFF. Those of us who have the misfortune of driving behind you would greatly appreciate it. I know you think you’re saving time, but honestly, they make rear windows transparent for a reason…you know, just in case you want to take a quick peek back there every now and then. Once on the road, let’s review a few pointers… Shoulders of the road were made for the purpose of easing into and out of traffic while merging. Trust me, it’s a much better alternative than

practically standing on your brakes while in the right traffic lane as you suddenly realize your exit is approaching – oh, in 3 feet or so. Same goes for merging onto a major highway or parkway. Do not assume that the lane is clear for you to simply sail right through at 60 mph. There are occasionally, you know, other vehicles already inhabiting that space. Then there are those scenarios that are simply so bizarre, they are beyond words. A few weeks ago, I was stopped at a light on the Service Road of the LIE. As I waited in the left hand turning lane, a truck opposite me in the right hand lane, I noticed a car approach in the middle lane, “driven” by a man staring intently at the map spread across his steering wheel. Suddenly, he apparently

decided that he needed to be somewhere else, and proceeded to back up on the Service Road and cut his wheel, angling his car toward this aforementioned truck in the right lane…all the while, never shifting his gaze from the map. With a mix of horror and amusement, I watched the scene unfold. I glanced at the truck driver, to see him absolutely hysterical with laughter, shaking his head in amazement. The light turned green at that point, spurring me to get out of there before witnessing Act II of this particular play. No telling what the next move might have been! Let’s all focus people. And not on our maps, please. The road. Only the road. And for goodness sake, invest in a snowbrush.

More than 250 friends and family members attended the annual joyous musical event; the St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School and Catholic Charities Variety Show, Peace on Earth. This event began with organizational meetings in October where students from SJB began working with residents from twelve different group homes. Together, they created up an act, choreographed dance numbers, rehearsed, designed sets and planned costumes. One event attendee said, “I wish everyone could see this show. It was such a wonderful way to spend an afternoon and such a heartwarming show.” All proceeds of this event benefitted the St. John the Baptist Mission Outreach.
